Years of Intoxication

Unrequited love is like a pot of strong wine. You know perfectly well that it will make you dizzy, let you lose yourself, and that it will be painful. Yet like moths to a flame, it is gladly endured.

You take care not to overdo it, but I will not stop until I get thoroughly drunk.

However, for any amount of drunkenness, one day I’ll have to sober up.

I got to say I really like this story, but I prefer Professional Body Double over this. This is definitely a story I would re-read, and it's so full of angst and dog-blood, I love how the story went and developed, although pretty much can be guessed, but it is still satisfying. You will definitely feel so much pain and angst reading this, this is probably one of the most angsty novels I have encountered so far, and it doesn't disappoint. There is also sufficient plot and character development which... more>> is why it is rated highly.

Really suitable for all you who love reading angst and dog blood, there aren't many misunderstandings due to miscommunications here because the MC knows what he is doing and he chose to do it. Thought there are many misunderstandings due to their own assumptions. Suitable for people who enjoy how characters develop through all their sh*t to be together.

Not suitable for those who can't stand the mentioned tags, angst, also if you don't agree with f*ck buddies relationships, the two main characters sleeping with someone other than the main characters, etc, this novel is not suitable for you. <<less

This novel is the best example of a toxic relationship. My conclusion from the novel: ML and MC need urgent therapy. ML is the definition of a selfish psychopath son of bit*h. MC is the definition of moronic and spineless. Readers will get their patience tested throughout the novel. So better skip this and read some good once.

I can never pity people who act like they are so helpless. Someone uses media and the law against them, but don't think to avenge themselves with the same means.

He Gu could have collected evidence of Song Ju Han's r*pe, forced imprisonment, harassment, physical assault, blackmail. There are just way too many charges. He could have launched a public opinion war if he didn't think he would win in court. But I'd be damned if my ab*ser still has access to and power over me.

This logic of sacrificing your body... more>> to pay off debts or protect loved ones will never not be s*upid. We are both dying if you threaten my family & I'm the condition.

I have nothing to say about the ml. You couldn't pay me to pity a rapist. Getting together with your ab*ser isn't romance but Stockholm syndrome. <<less

For those people wanting to read this, quick warning. If you're emotionally weak and quick-tempered, just don't, don't do it.

Because it has a really slow start. You might even vomit blood from feeling extreme emotions in the first half.

If you can persist tho, it'll be really worth it. The satisfaction felt while reading the latter half was enormous.

Spoiler

Chapter 45.

If you reached this chapter then congrats!! You finally reached it!! ☆■☆

[collapse]

But if you wanna cry. When I say the word cry, it means a really lots of crying. This is the one for you.

Or maybe if you're an M like me, (jst emotionally) THIS IS ALSO FOR YOUUU!! ♡■♡ People have various opinions about this and I'm the same.

I'm actually a bit disappointed about the ending. That's also the reason why I rated it 4 stars.

I feel that an open ended ending was the best for Years of Intoxication.

Spoiler

After they broke up, and Song Ju Han repented, it should be ended there and then.

[collapse]

And the rest of it will be filled out by the reader's imagination.

Spoiler

Whether they get back together or become just strangers in the end, it all relies on the reader's to fill it out themselves.

[collapse]

Still a good read. But not for faint-hearted.

if I can give zero star that’s exactly what i’d do. horrible story, I dont think the writing itself is bad, it’s good but the ending is horrible. for me, the main lead never had redemption AT ALL. he doesnt deserve to even be within 10meters to the he gu. he was a horrible ab*ser and r*pist. sorry im not gonna out here and forgive and forget how horrible he treated he gu over SIX whole years. it was cycles of ab*se, he would ab*se he gu whenever he’s mad,... more>> control him then treat him nicely afterwards to make he gu thinks there’s hope. he’s manipulative he knows. and u gonna tell me that he gu after times and times again realising that he wasted those years of his life and he ‘regrets’ it, still ends up with the same as*hole and saying he’s contented? what bullsh*t is this. he doesnt love the main lead, he’s obsess and he’s trauma bounded by him. I dont like this story bcs of how it makes it seem like all those cycles of ab*se are easily forgotten and forgiven over a confession of I love yous and promises to not cheat when that should have been the bare minimum. and whose to say that he gu is not even the slightest traumatised by the ab*se and if he ever felt like the main lead could easily broke his promises like he does over the years? how is this a supposedly a happy ending? he gu needs to run away and find someone else, ppl cant easily change... <<less

I'm not a fan of dog blood novels. I read it on a whim... So just saying I was mostly irritated while reading. But finished it anyhow. The title was perfectly fitting; if someone is intoxicated no way their behavior can be rational. Same goes for plot which is all about drama. o (╯-╰) o

To put it simply, MC was intoxicated for 10 year & when he stopped the intoxication the withdrawal symptoms showed in ML. o ( ̄ヘ ̄) o

MC was in my eyes a masochist. No matter what thrown... more>> at him from ML he just accepted; it was the case in more half of the novel. And no matter how many times it was written that MC loved ML I couldn't agree. I just felt it had became MC's habit in 10 years otherwise how could his love be preserved for so long when his heart was hurt countless times. MC was mature in other aspects but only illogical when it came to ML. (༎ຶ⌑༎ຶ)

ML was a completely s*upid truly in term of his age. His behaviors of spoiled young master sometimes made me frustrated. Sometimes I felt he was too much of a dumb; didn't grow well mentally. Some reviewed ML changed after MC left but I felt he was still selfish, willful, forceful only tried to show how pitiful he was & said he was understanding MC but not showing it in his behavior just like child who wanted show off his maturity but still immature inside. I think ture changes came at only last few chapters; something definitely changed. ML put MC's life before him. Tried to cherish MC, showed MC respect.|~_~|

The drama resolved around MC & ML. MC literally lost everything ; his heart, career, friendship, reputation bedside his family because of ML. In my opinion, MC & ML definitely were mismatch couple, those types shouldn't be together in the 1st place if it's in real life. But since it's in fiction & they were put together so the sufferings were inevitable. MC deserved someone better; someone like Zhou Heyi. ┭┮﹏┭┮

I originally rated it "3" at first but changed it to "4" cause I read the manhua first & the art of that was beautiful which made me a little bit biased. I get those who love dog blood & angst genre, this novel would be good but for others it wouldn't be tasteful to read. ( ̄ー ̄) <<less

Overall it's good read, wrap up pretty nicely till the end.

Yeah there's many up and down, you'll feel frustrated, angered and anxious until you just feel hopeless and just read along because you're curious about the outcome of such toxic entanglements, then things got better, I think this is good how they resolved their relationship towards the end at least they learned to communicate that's a good step, HG got better not some spineless **#* he is at the beginning and SJH try his hardest change for the better

And Better... more>> yet they actually doing their best to solved their problems towards each other along the way, which is nice because I don't like it when problem is not addressed properly and just pretend they don't existed just because they're already together.

When it comes to HE (the ending) I actually feel liberated lol, feeling a bit happy everything is over I just want them to be happy now after everything they gone through. <<less

Song Ju Han is such a player that even I got my feelings cheated. Poor He Gu. Can't blame him for falling head over heels in love. My heart felt so wretched for HG when I knew the reason why SJH approached him.

Fast forward a dozen chapters, the tables turned and HG's emotional reaction towards SJH is so indifferent, it actually makes me pity SJH. Well, he deserved this treatment because karma is a b*tch.

Overall, this story is quite enjoyable to read although I struggled to understand the translations but... more>> as long as you can ignore the mistakes, just grasp the main point of it and finish reading. I am interested to read the same author's other works (Professional Body Double & In Love with an Idiot) since I like his style of writing. I read Beloved Enemy before this novel and I really enjoyed it. <<less

Now THIS is how you do a great chasing crematorium. It has the most satisfying arc and ending from the 188 series for me. Heads up that it might be a long one because I have lots of thoughts and that this review is about the novel.

It tells the story of He Gu, a man in his late 20s that has a tumultuous dynamic with the popular singer Song Juhan. He Gu goes through his daily life overworking himself for a big company and feeling lonely, unless Song Juhan communicates... more>> with him. Due to his unrequited love of seven years, He Gu cannot help but do everything he wants. Meanwhile, Song Juhan thinks of He Gu as disposable and the person he feels comfortable with the most, although he treats him horribly. Both made a deal years ago about being friends with benefits. For He Gu, that was enough - until reality hits him in the face and he'll have to choose between putting himself first or stay intoxicated.

Unlike many readers that (rightfully) hate on Song Juhan and think of He Gu as someone without fault, I want to offer a bit of a different perspective on that.

First, it's necessary to speak about the characters. He Gu is the protagonist and we see the world entirely through his eyes. He is a reserved man, introverted, calm and quiet, someone who doesn't like getting attention and likes to stay on the background. Part of this last detail is because of his low self steem and inferiority complex, as a result of his backstory (from he grew up to comparing himself to Song Juhan constantly). He likes to be in his bubble, hates taking risks and going outside his comfort zone. He also is someone who comes to a conclusion without checking facts, makes assumptions fast, stubborn and self-sacrificing. All of this is important to mention in order to understand that He Gu is partly an unreliable narrator. Yes, his feelings are completely valid, but the assumptions he comes to weren't right all the time.

On the other hand, we have Song Juhan. He is presented as a manchild, a person who acts before thinking, says the wrongs things at the worst times, stubborn, disrespectful and inconsiderate - but he is the best at being charming when he wants to. It makes sense for him, growing up in a rich and privileged family, always on the spotlight. Make no mistake, he will annoy the f*ck out of any reader, and it's reasonable to hate him since he's such a horrible man. My feelings towards Song Juhan are the opposite though, I actually really like his character, and would even say he's now my favorite 188 gong. I always enjoy very flawed people in fiction that are well constructed, even if they are irredeemable. In theory, Song Juhan is all of them, but in practice he definitely redeemed himself for me, and I'll explain why.

I think that both are flawed characters (Song Juhan being the worst, obviously). He Gu's assumptions are some of the triggers that make their relationship change, in both good and bad ways. There are many times when he thinks the worst of Song Juhan, which is justifiable since he is such a bad person, but he didn't get them right all the time. Such events made Song Juhan the angriest, and this goes both ways: the assumptions Song Juhan made of He Gu were decisive for his actions -which were the absolutely worst in most of the cases. There's also the fact that Song Juhan showed himself as he was, but He Gu didn't love himself enough so he took it and decided to stick with him. It wasn't until (view spoiler), and I find that very symbolic.

Their dynamic could be the typical "guy who loves too much and the other guy that reciprocrates too late and repents", which isn't bad in itself (I love cliches if done well), but there is a point here where it is reversed. Who wouldn't find satisfying to see a grown man accept his mistakes, cry for an ex partner to take him back and promise to cherish them this time? I enjoyed it a lot, and I felt that that everything Song Juhan went through later was necessary for him to grow.

The thing I love about them the most is that ultimately, both had an organic character development and
Spoiler

learned from their mistakes

[collapse]
.

I also like that He Gu became an active participant of his own life and accepted he had the agency to walk away and should've done so a long time ago, since there wasn't anything tying both together at first. At the end, everything came to his own volition, and he chose what he wanted and felt it was best according to his feelings.

Many people might say Song Juhan didn't deserve anything good after hurting He Gu so much and I agree. Does he deserve He Hu? Not really. Would He Gu be better off without him? Probably. But not Song Juhan. He could never take it. It's definitely not a healthy dynamic overall, considering everything He Gu endured (part of it willingly, the rest was forced upon him), but I feel great thinking about He Gu reclaiming power and putting himself first. I also enjoy when a shou has a gong on a leash and the gong does everything for him because of how obsessed he is so yup, it's my type of fictional dynamic for sure lol.

I feel like I had more to say, and probably will come back to add more details later, but I just wanted to say that I'm very impressed with this novel. I loved the writting and the pacing, although both characters exasperated me at different points of the story, I ended up loving both individually and together, no matter how one is more f*cked up than the other. The cast was incredible as well, it was easy to get invested into the subplots. I found the extras very cute as well. Possibly the best ending I could think of for them, considering I was rooting for He Gu to find happiness. <<less

I FEEL ROBBED OF MY TIME

40 chapters of utter foolishness. 40 chapters of me praying to the heavens above that this spineless, brainless MC would finally grow a backbone and leave the absolute garbage that is the ML. I dont even feel sorry for the MC, just f*cking furious. He put himself in this situation from the start. The ML outright told him, that he wasn’t interested in a serious relationship, that he was only using him for s*x and he still stayed. Not for a month, not for a... more>> year but for 6 YEARS.

He wasn’t trapped. He wasn’t coerced. He chose to stay. Self-respect? Nonexistent. If this book hadn’t been recommended to me by a friend, I would’ve dropped it faster than the MC drops his dignity.

ML is without exaggeration, the worst character I’ve ever encountered in my thousands of books. Tr*shiest. Most disgusting. Immature. Abhorrent. The kind of person that makes you lose faith in humanity. He grapes the MC, blames him for it, and says it’s his fault. He constantly compares the MC to other models, telling him his waist isn’t as tight as it used to be and he needs to work out more. Gaslights the MC and insults him everytime they see each other, saying he's nothing special and that he could be replaced anytime. He isolates the MC from his friends, throws tantrums when things don’t go his way, gets physically violent and gets jealous over nothing but still proceeds to sleep around with his model friends. And somehow, he expects the MC to be okay with all of this.

Make it make sense. Write me an essay. Explain to me how anyone—anyone—could tolerate this toxic cesspool of a person. I read every internal monologue the MC had, and I still can’t wrap my head around it. You must hate yourself so deeply that you're willing to endure this nightmare. One thing I hate the most in a romance novel is a MANwho*e ML who sleeps around while still sleeping with MC. DISGUSTING.

And if anyone find themselves relating to the MC or stuck in a similar situation please, for the love of all that’s holy, wake up. Slam your head against a wall, chug a bottle of antidelulu pills, and check yourself into a self-help institution. Get some serious help. This is not okay

I get that the author wanted readers to hate the ML so that his groveling arc would hit harder. But they went so far overboard that the groveling couldn’t possibly redeem him. He could grovel until he’s 80, crawling on his hands and knees, and I still wouldn’t forgive him. He doesn’t deserve love. He doesn’t deserve happiness. He deserves to get hit by a bus. Just disgusting. 🤮 AND this isnt my first SQC novel, im used to scummy characters but this ML just genuinely upsets me. I dont know how anyone can stomach him getting back together with the MC and them having a happy ever after. <<less

It is actually nice, aaaand short. (I have nightmares about 100 to 200 chapters of repetitive redemption scenes.) And the characters, well, have character. He Gu clearly loves and cares about Song Juhan even after the separation, and Song Juhan remains a bit of a jerk jerk till the end. Plus, they both accept that they have flaws. It is usually more like the shou is a naive angel and the gong is a pure evil first, then after enlightenment, the perfect husband. But this novel feels different to me.

Spoiler

I hate Song He, though. I mean the situation. I know it is common with asian novels, but I don't like when a supposed billionaire boss can’t even handle his own father. Song Juhan even has his mother’s support, and his solution in the end is hunger strike... Well it is coherent, because he act like a kid most of the time, but let me say, not too sexy.

It is not too deep, full with cliches, but a nice read. <<less

I read this hoping to cry ugly like I did in "Winner takes it all" & "Professional body double" and ready to hate ML but there's nothing here.

First novel of this author where I feel bad for ML guessing what will happen next. Most people dont like Song Ju Han because the way he treat He Gu. Song Ju Han doesnt believed in love. The story tell why Song Ju Han childhood is like. What surprise me how can Song Ju Han stay with He Gu for 7 years. It started of 7 years later but also tell how they first meet. There was love traingle in the story, ah. It was complicated. How big is your heart to let the person you loved make you suffered for 7 years? Damn, I could never imagine. It's not just heart, but also reputation to the point MC needed hiding for the media and people. Even I cried on how much he suffered. I feel so angry and want to punch ML so much.
