Another series that include great misunderstanding but somehow it correct also include some dark and sad plot with good comedy that sprinkled on it and of course korean's author favorite's plot that is self-sacrifice thing.

It's interesting at first but it seem the story become more predictable.

Im not that against the romance part, but too much hero's pov included is quite annoying, I know he is very important character but still annoying.

MC literally cried at him to just leave her alone after he screws sh*t up by doing something she never asked him to do and acted like he was wronged afterwards, and not even 10 chapters later does he poke into her affairs again, like seriously get the hint bruh

This is my first time writing a review for this site, so sorry if it is lacking.

I personally really like (good) gender-bender stories, and I would say this is one of those. Well I don't think this aspect was handled perfectly, it was done very well especially in the beginning, and the rest of the story is good enough to make up for it, if you don't like this aspect, I think. There is a lot of good character development, especially from the OML. He kinda goes from being a... more>> weirdo to everyone's favorite. Overall 9.5/10. Probably in my top 10 webnovels so far, not that I have read more than 10, but you get the idea.

I'm not really great at stuff like this, but I feel like that was enough to get my point across, just wanted to support the series a little, bye. <<less

I never imagined that I would enjoy the novel as much as I do now. One of the major reasons for this is how much development every character gets. The MC's thoughts border on su*cide and it really feels like she's going crazy at some points. Eventually though, things do turn for the better.

The ML has also grown on me. My first impression of him was that he was honestly pretty annoying, though as I've read along, he's really become more mature and taken up the responsibilities as a hero.

I'm... more>> pretty certain that this novel can be categorized as problematic. But, I think that the themes that it explores, while discomforting for some, are nevertheless worth exploring and reading about. This work is definitely a slow burner, and you have to go through some dark and gritty sections in the beginning before the MC starts having better days. However, I think there's some real value in the way the author develops all the characters, especially the stuff about mental illness.

I definitely recommend you try out this novel if you haven't already, the characters are really sweet and the author writes an engaging story. <<less

So far the novel is pretty good, a little bit tragic for my taste but the writing makes up for it. Would definitely recommend if someone wants to read a good academy story that has a healthy balance of character writing.

Currently as of reading this, I'm enjoying the aspect of the darker tone and sadness part of the novel. But I have one big gripe with the series so far and it's the situation between the MC and the Protagonist ... more>>

I find the situation that the MC doesn't like the protagonist ridiculous. Not going to go to all the reasons, but I'll go into one that annoyed me a lot. At one point in the story, the MC goes into a motel with an old bald guy in order to earn extra cash due to her situation of buying food everyday for a Sylvia who she wishes to be friends with. The author creates a situation where it looks more dire than it seems, but she really only shows her power in the motel room to a bunch of scientist to earn money. Now leading up to this point the protagonist actually sees her entering in the motel with an old man and came out exhausted and has an envelope of cash, what kind of misunderstanding does that lead up to you may ask? Well apparently the MC was too oblivious to see what it can insinuate and continues making it look worse by saying that she does it for the money or she likes doing it without even realizing what it looks like. He eventually came into her house later and saw her financial situation, which is not good. So he knows her financial situation isn't good, she is sleeping around with men for money, and continues being a bread shuttle for Sylvia, which btw doesn't even consider her a friend at the time. He eventually intervened with the bread shuttle situation and when she finds out she practically freaked out and starting hating the protagonist. Yes it was later revealed that she is basically trying to be friends with Sylvia to survive, but it's not like he would know? I don't understand all the hate with the protagonists when it's mainly simple misunderstanding that she creates due to the excuse of being too oblivious to see herself looking like a bread shuttle or a person that sleeps around for money. I hope the situation gets better in the future rather than the author spewing more random reason for the MC to hate the protagonist even more.

Beautifully tragic story with well developed characters and plot. I went in thinking that this was going to be a generic academy novel but boy was I wrong and was blindsided. Had me genuinely empathetic for some of the characters here.

The title of this series is really.... lame. It makes me long for the common 1 page single spaced length titles many series have nowadays, and that's saying something. (at least know something about the series from those titles)

But at the same time it manages to be distinct in its plain title so I guess it did its job.

Luckily the phrase you can't judge a novel by its cover continues to hold true, and the story within is actually pretty good and worth a go. It's a bit of... more>> a slow burn, pardon my pun, but it is solid and has some good characters and developments. And the translator does a excellent job!

The premise of the story is a military man ends up reincarnating into a girl named Scarlett in the world of a novel she had read (magic/abilities). She knows nothing about herself, other than her name, that she is a student at the academy, and that she spontaneously combusts.

As the story progresses, she gradually forms friends with other people, learms her flames can be controlled to an extent (and are influenced by her emotions), and learns more about her identity (as her character was never mentioned in the novel).

The story commonly has some misunderstandings which can be used well for humor and drama. Meanwhile it can also resolve a number of them fairly quickly so it isn't overdone. Some do last longer, but they are reasonable assumptions usually.

Those wanting your classic genderswap where MC struggles with her new identity, loss of manhood etc will generally be disappointed. The novel is abit more serious in tone, and MC was not a teen or manchild (plus the new body performs better, and MC has bigger concerns adapting to the new world).

Which also means those turned off by the classic genderswap type stories may also be more open to a story like this.

There are romantic elements part of the story, but it is not the focus (MC is not thinking in those terms for herself at all presently for various reasons). However I could see it coming into play down the line. Hard to say where MC inclinations/sexuality would end up.

While this is academy focused, it is not oppresively so, and seems plausible it will move past that in the near future. It doesn't make me feel the way I do when other series inevitably enter the dreaded overused academy arc.

All in all, the main character is a really sweet heroic person who has to deal with tough circumstances (in present circumstances, in addition to past life). If you hate characters like Siwoo, or Sylvia at first, give them time, they do come around.

Tldr

It's a solid story that is getting better as it goes. If it seems interesting at all, give it a read.

Edit: Since chapter 112 where I initially reviewed things this has only gotten better (chapter 247). This series can have more emotional depth in a couple of chapters, than some do in hundreds.

It gets dark. But it continues to have sprinkling of hope of a brighter future unseen one day. (Which we may finally be on the part it starts to get better)

The character development has been great, with much of the cast developing and growing.

I can't say this story will have a happy ending for sure, but with the recent major developments, revelations about some characters (nice twist), it looks likely. Which will make the bitter intense portion of the story before, pay off so much sweeter. Already there is plenty of catharsis going on.

There are tons of other reviews to give more details. My point is just this series is so good it was worth me going back to update this old review again.

Excuse me now, as I need to go chase off these darn onion Ninjas who appeared and enjoy the well built payoff. <<less

This is a well written but depressive novel.

The MC Is a mess at many points in the story, but it's entirely understandable once you learn her circumstances. Considering her kind nature its more so heartwrenching.

The story isn't an easy one either. It takes time to delve into the background of every aspect of the MC as she's not just a simple transmitigrator. People have alot of prejudice vs witches too, for good reasons. However this has also cost humanity and elves alot because not all witches seem to be inherently... more>> evil, but ended up causing alot of harm due to the maliciousness they themselves experienced merely because they where witches.

The series is complex and deep. It's not a happy-go-lucky adventure or powertrip. The MC isn't OP and can't solve everything on her own. And there's plenty of depressive stuff in the story due to the world they live in.

Is it worth a read?

Hell yes, there's things that annoy me with this series. At the same time the writing, story, background etc etc is just well written. It's a truly engaging story to read, but expect people to be flawed and alot of sadness to occur. <<less

A very fun read, while there is alot of pity bait, there's also an interesting plot going on concerning the potential threats and mc's connection with them (and a bunch more mysteries).

The other characters, specifically the main two side characters do start off kind of annoying, as well as some of the misunderstandings but they grow alot along the way, both being the bestest friends you could ask for.

This is one of the most entertaining novels I've read recently, hence my rating of 5 stars.

But it's also one of the strangest, at least in terms of how it's structured. As other reviews have mentioned, the beginning of the novel doesn't give good impressions. The main character feels like a stereotypical dumb pushover type, and the few other important characters at the beginning also come full of what seem to be average academy stereotypical drama.

I'm usually someone who tells others that if they don't like the beginning of a... more>> story, then they most likely won't like the rest. That is NOT the case here. The strange intro is effectively just a necessary prologue for what is a surprisingly expansive and well written action story.

I don't think I can explain further without spoiling some stuff, but since I really want people to read through to the later chapters, what I'll do is list exactly when major shifts in the story occur. If you're on the edge about whether to read this story or continue past the early chapters, please look through the following. I'll try to keep it as general as possible so that nothing important gets spoiled:

First ~20 chapters: The story feels like your average academy novel, where the main character and the few characters she interacts with are all annoying. The MC voluntarily becomes a bread shuttle/errand girl for the popular type girl/main heroine from the original story the MC isekaid into. She initially seems dumb for acting like this, BUT

Chapter 31 explains that the MC was actually doing this on purpose. In fact, most of the annoyances from the characters in previous chapters start getting explained after this, and honestly, by the latest chapters it's hard to really hate any of them any more (your anger gets diverted towards many of the other villainous characters that get introduced later).

Chapter 38: This is when the story's first major action arc occurs. The story has regular action scenes and plot advances/twists from this point forward.

Chapter 50: The full background setting of the fantasy world gets revealed here. And it was very surprising, because it reveals a world with a much larger scale than I expected. It made me realize that the story could go well past the academy setting at some point, with characters having to go to different places around the world to fix problems.

Chapter 78: This chapter is the beginning of one of my favorite arcs. The writing here was particularly good, and really gets you emotionally invested in what happens. The story already had dark scenes before this, but things get particularly bad from this moment on.

As you can see from the spoiler section above, it really took me until Chapter 78 to get fully invested in the story, but it was well worth it, and it wouldn't have been as good without all the stuff that led to it. The recently translated chapters, right up to Chapter 129, have all been great.

This has become the top novel I check daily for updates. I hope everyone who reads this review gives it a fair chance. <<less

I like this Novel a lot.

The world building is good.

The characters have a certain degree of complexity.

The MC is very pitiful, but it doesn't look unnatural. So it's easy to sympathize with the MC.

I am glad to have read it without dropping it. Because the good parts started to appear only after a lot of chapters had passed.

I agree with AAA-BBB-CCC. This novel just a pity bait. It's ok to use that on the early story to explain the background of this novel, but to overly using pity bait until more than half the story? It's so overused.

Then the MC didn't grow a bit, always use pity pity and pity. She cry easily, just using emotion never using logic and always self blaming "It's because of mee, huweee".

And most importantly, the body is female but the soul is a male from modern world, but the MC always... more>> acting like female. If so why then bother to isekai a male and gender bender him to her? Plus she never use her knowledge about the novel to help her create a better future

It's a decent series however it suffers from getting overly predictable in how the flow of every battle and such will go.

Speaking of suffering, there is plenty of that too. Characters dying isn't rare.

If there is one thing I kind of want to complain about it's regarding the romance tag and how the gender bender is handled.

So... about that romance tag. I feel like it's false advertising. From start to finish the only romance with MC is one sided unspoken love from other characters toward MC. MC herself never considers a single person in a romantic way even in the slightest.

And then we have the gender bender. Honestly I really like gender bender stories, but this one really have no real reason to be one because it is barely relevant in the plot and MC also never really goes through any related development. Their mentality is from start to finish completely unchanged.

Hello everyone,

I'm not really good at critiquing so I'll just give my bias opinion with this story as an average reader.

I really like it, it's the exact definition of a "page-turner", I even supported the translator (thank you) on patreon to read ahead. That's how addictive it is to me.

I enjoy the fact that the MC isn't OP, she (he?) actually struggles and tries to overcome difficult situations. The consequences she has to go through feels very real, this world that the author set up is unforgiving. Characters will... more>> get hurt, and suffer, even the MC.

The drama between characters also feel very entertaining to read, although, despite what others might say, I enjoy the misunderstandings, although a bit repetitive. If you hate misunderstandings because of characters lack of communication, you might hate this, but to me, that's what makes this novel funny sometimes. Despite that, the author does a good job of painting our protag being pitiful, annoyingly sometimes, but it does make me root for her.

This is a very unique academy-hero-life novel to me, it has a grimdark setting, gender bend female protag with peculiar circumstances, drama, and a potential romance (?). Overall, I like it too much. <<less

A gender-bender where the main character doesn't freak out over their gender identity. When you find yourself inside of the world of a novel where it's fate will soon hang on a balance, whether you are a guy or girl shouldn't be on the top of your concerns.

The name and synopsis of this novel doesn't serve it justice. Yes, she (the MC) sits at the Right Diagonal Back Seat of the Heroine, but it doesn't have much significance after a while other than allowing the characters to interact. I'm so... more>> used to long titles that basically explain the plot, that this relatively short title setting the scene felt a bit weird, and perhaps redundant a few dozen chapters down the line. Which is fine, of course. Author can call it whatever, but it just gives people the wrong impression on the story in my opinion.

The synopsis also gives you a very different idea of what kind of novel this is. At a glance it gives off the impression that the MC is sucking up to the heroine in a light-hearted story. However, the story will soon take on a darker tone as more details about the world is revealed which set's up the stakes, and we also witness the psychological state of the MC go up and down throughout the story. We see the perspectives of different characters which is nice, albeit still a bit lacking in my opinion, in terms of fleshing out other characters which need to be seem as more than just "in-universe fictional characters".

Throughout all this, the gender-bender aspect of this story is mostly limited to preventing girls from falling head over heels towards the main character (if they were male) and providing an interesting relationship dynamic between the male in-universe protagonist and the now female main character; one side doesn't see themselves as female and has no interest in romantic relationships, or rather, is outright oblivious to it with the other side being hopelessly unable to make any progress as a result. This gives rise to an interesting basis by which the main character would need come to terms with their new identity if they are to be capable of being romantically involved with anyone, which is all character development I am hoping to see; the direction the author is taking with the gender-bender aspect is still rather uncertain currently, it's possible the MC never get's romantically involved with anyone. Anyway, I haven't seen anything that would make me cringe thus far typical of other gender-benders, such as the characters fussing over how they go to the loo, or what clothes to wear etc. The closest you get here is the main character refusing to bathe with other females (And they do this without making a fuss at all).

This is one of the few good novels I have read in a while which really scratched this itch. I recommend you give it a chance. <<less

But... This novel... I love it. I fell in love.

The characters, the world, the writing, the jokes, the struggles, I love them all.

... more>> This novel really does lure you into a false sense of security, thinking it would be a relatively normal school setting, even showing us a "pathetic" protagonist.

But this novel has one of the best "unreliable narrator" I have ever read. It was both frustrating and fun trying to decipher what is truth and what are lies. Including things that were "mysteriously" absent.

I won't spoil much more but, give it a read, the first 20 or so chapters might seem like a classic Isekai trope, but don't be fooled...

For if you keep digging, you would find gold. <<less

Totally deserving 5 stars!!

This is one of the best academy novel I've read, seriously. The story lulls you with a false sense of security which will make you think that it's just a normal academy novel, but by chapter 30, the tone starts to heavily shifts towards psychological drama, and with the tone shift in the novel, you get to finally see how dangerous and in peril the human life on the lands are.

The characters are extremely well written, the Main character, Scarlet is a transmigrated office worker man who... more>> is stuck in the body of a girl, at first you'll find her situation humourous, but little by little you'll see that her actions are desperate measures for her survival, she is one of the best MCs I've seen.

The second most important character is Sylvia, the original FMC, she starts off being a b*tch, it might get own your nerves but once her reasoning gets disclosed, you wouldn't feel much disdain towards her, she would grow a lot on you, the more you read.

Another most important character is the Si Woo, the Original main character, at first you'll find him annoying, his decisions will sometimes make you hate him, but he is the guy who goes through the most character development, now he's my one of my favourite character within the novel.

Personally I think this is a hidden gem. Seems very cliché at first (MC gets thrown into fictional world they know, academy setting, heroes & antoganists) but the novel surprisingly manages to hold its own weight.

I especially love how the author goes in depth in the characters' thoughts and feelings. The story gets dark at times but not to the point where you might think it's only "pitty bait" -there's much more to it. I also appreciate how the protagonist isn't one to just simply accept the circumstances but they... more>> actually miss their previous world.

All in all I highly recommend this work. Read around 30 chapters if you're not confident yet and decide for yourself!

Never thought I'm gonna like this novel like I am now when starting to read this. The story is really slow at the beginning, but once it start to take off it really is taking off. The story became quite dark later on but still balanced it out with lighthearted scene. There are a lot of pity bait like other reviewer said, but those pity bait does not negate what makes the story good, which is the balance between the dark part of the story and the lighthearted part of... more>> the story.

The story is a TS which I abhor as a genre, but it is not becaming what defines the main character. The TS part is mainly a plot device for the main character to not attracted to the Hero, Yoon siwoo, who is a chick magnet in the story. So the TS is not a big problem for me while reading this.

The MC is written really well, and so does the side character. Unlike many isekai story the MC is not OP, but instead growing by many setback she have. Character interaction is characterized by the cliche of many understanding (and a lot of pity bait). This make two main side character, Sylvia and Yoon siwoo quite annoying at the beginning of the story. Character interaction later become much more dynamic (still a lo of misunderstanding) once the MC start caring about the world around her.

Overall this is a good novel with a slow start. I recommend this novel considering it's good pacing and good character growth. If you look for a comedy novel, which I thought this novel is when I began reading this, think twice. There is a lot of sorrow and suffering, but also hope and determination. That's what this story is about, story of heroes. <<less
