“I really feel like having one of those special macarons from the cafeteria today. You think you could get me one?”

I sit diagonally behind the heroine in class. I’m basically her errand girl.

“We are [friends] , after all.”

…And I’m happy to do it.

Brilliant writing! Even if you're not a fan of gender-bending stories (like me), you can still enjoy this one. I'll explain more below.

This is the main point I wanted to express while reading it.

The author has a true talent for writing, and if you're familiar with other anime or novels, you'll easily notice his influences.

... more>> If you like Re:Zero, you'll surely enjoy this novel as well. It’s heavily inspired by it.

Since I mentioned Re:Zero, you can already guess that this story isn't a fluffy school romance but more of a mental breakdown tale.

(Avoid spoilers; it's best to read without knowing too much.)

Spoiler

One thing I love about Re:Zero is the sense of hopelessness. Even if you know what's going to happen, you're just an ordinary person who can't do much, yet you still decide to do what must be done, even at the cost of your mental health. (And the lore of course)

[collapse]

I also noticed some similarities to the writing of Albert Camus. If you've read his work, you'll understand the connection.

Don't read the spoiler if you're familiar with his book, as it could ruin some surprises.

Spoiler

I'm referring to L'Étranger (The Stranger) ; the novel even mentions it in one of the chapters.

[collapse]

I won’t say much more because it’s better to dive in without too much knowledge, but it’s a masterpiece. The first 50 chapters are a masterclass.

This is one of the best Korean novels I've ever read. I hope the rest of it is just as good. <<less

Unlike my impression on the setting, this story is darker than expected. The first 30 chapters are a bit frustrating but after that it's enjoyable. The genderbend element is not really relevant. The characters are interesting and likeable, althought some of them dont leave an exactly good first impression. Overall an enjoyable academy story.

Honestly one of the better gender bender novels out there. It is also dark at times and story is quite compelling. What I like about the novel is that the characters have a real feel to them. The make mistakes try to improve themselves etc. Which for me makes me view them in a favourable light not like those hur dur I am perfect mc/supporting cast that can do anything without any reprecussions on anyone.

So all in all I recommend this novel but do note it has gender bender and... more>> I definitely feel like they are going add more romance in it later down the line. So if you don't like those stay clear I guess or try it idk. <<less

It's really enjoyable and a bit dark. Surprisingly found it difficult to put it down until the accursed grey button barred my path again. Would recommend.

Should mention that yhe gender bend thing is not really much of an issue while story telling, just seems like a girl who's not interested in men, tho I have no idea if that side will progress in a different way

Yeah, this one is absolutely gonna destroy your heart. super tearjerking with some small comedy inserted in the middle.

MC is... somehow both perspective and very dense. (s) he doesnt remember shes now a woman at all, which make it quite frustrating looking at her interaction with the ogMC who likes her. Everyone in the novel and also me as reader also went from hating ogMC interaction with MC to pitying his pitiful attempt in pursuing MC, whos still a straight man inside and doesnt even recognize him as probable love... more>> interest and keep thinking ogMC will ended with other girls. (this is like looking at SQQ looking at Binghe who got heart eyes and everything and stll think 'ah yeah, how he gonna build his harem??' all over again except this one is straight pair, at least outwardly). Dont get me wrong this is hilarious, keep suffers ogMc!!

Bc those are like the only comedy we'll get here. Everything else is just pure heartwrenching. The author works really hard for that tragedy tag. MC is very miserable. Shes sufferings so much. Damn she needs lot of hugs, and therapy, and whatever else she need <<less

This is a very good story so far. The characters are likable, there are tense action-packed scenes and plot twists, and the drama is compelling. It's an ultimately hopeful story, but there's a lot of tragedy and a lot of sacrifice to get there. There is an official translation available on Tappytoon, which I have paid for, but it is actually far behind the fan translation. It seems that Tappytoon split up the original chapters into smaller chapters to make more money, so it is actually very, very far behind... more>> the fan translation. Pretty scummy business practice, IMO.

Note: Previously I had rated this lower because one section of the story was far too fast-paced, but things have returned to an appropriate pace since then so I have edited my review accordingly. <<less

It's a hurt so good kind of novel but not a slog at all.

The interactions between the core cast are always engaging and the pacing is excellent.

Great writing for the MC's internal dialogue

Been reading on this site for many years by now, but this is the first time I’ve felt compelled enough by a story to write a review.

This story really is the best example of expectation subversion, it builds up a narrative from the start full of your typical tropes, but fairly quickly you realise things aren’t as they were once portrayed.

MC is an unreliable narrator with a very interesting and complex character, there are only a handful of side characters that the novel expands on but they’re also fleshed out... more>> and well written.

One thing I personally really like is that like other similar novels there are misunderstandings, however, it doesn’t hinder the plot, it always only serves as comedic relief or to advance relationships. I also really appreciate the rapid and quality TL.

Only small gripe I have is that the author tries to make the MC seem as pitiful as possible to the other character in the novel even in her smallest actions, I wouldn’t go as far as to say it’s pity bait but it does seem like it’s just a little bit overdone. <<less

This is an interesting take on the whole isekai into academy genre. The author clearly knows what they are doing and is poking fun on the normal cliche by utilising the MC unstable mental state and the unreliable narration.

Spoiler

I specially enjoy how the author interweave reality and hallucination ala Millennium actress or chaos head.. So naturally into the story keeping readers at the tip of their toes.

On the downside.. The story does drag quite a bit and often retell same event through multiple perspective which can be annoying but also helpful since our MC narration cannot be trusted.

MC mental state reminded of the MC from welcome to NHK or steins gate with him getting a mental breakdown every once in a while. If you get annoyed by this kind of MC you might wanna skip this one.

[collapse]

I personally would recommend to give it a go just to enjoy the writing more than the plot itself. <<less

This novel gets dark at times and the MC actually struggles and suffers setbacks. Almost everyone has a sad backstory so it feels like pity bait sometimes. It is still enjoyable though. Worldbuilding and power system is pretty generic but at least the flow of the story is handled decently than most Korean novels. The character interactions are fun too and although there are misunderstandings they tend to get resolved and not get dragged out, well, except for the one between Scarlet and Si-woo but it's cute so I'll let... more>> it pass. Don't let the gender bender tag deter you from reading, though the MC hasn't acknowledged himself as a woman and still likes girls he doesn't really whine much and is adapting quite well. If it weren't for the occasional "masculinity" mention I would have forgotten the gender bender aspect. <<less
