I mean, it's pretty well written but in the end, it's still a traditional "I REVENGE MY FAMILY" story.

Sure, the MC is a petty b*tch, but the author writes it so that everything always goes in her way, which is... pretty normal for these novels. She's apparently great at plotting, even though in her first life she was never that proactive in politics nor did she have the experience to manipulate things around them. I can get her being bitter but her being an incredibly good actor is something I'm... more>> skeptical on.

Another thing are the women. MC's female antagonists all have shitty endings, usually suffering a great deal before their deaths, which is another generic thing for these novels (and probably the thing I'm iffed on at the most, although it's just another trope in the end, I suppose). I suggest you read it if this is your first time experiencing these kinds of novels though, it's at least a better written revenge fic.

TLDR; It's just another one of these revenge stories, it's not bad but there's nothing eye catching on this specific story. <<less

I feel bad for li song. As a kid, he did bad things and he was also considered an assh*le before wei luo's reincarnation. But I still feel bad for him. He's not the him of the past nor the same bully when he was a kid.

I think he's paid enough dues to be granted forgiveness.

There is a lot of family drama. The main character is a girl who somehow went back to her past.

Spoiler

I stopped reading. I didn't like reading about the gang r*pe, torture, humiliation, disrespect, age difference, plotting to harm each other, etc. Most of the characters are pretty cruel towards each other and don't really see each other as human beings. The main male character is pretty cruel as well to others (except to the main character). I did find the novel entertaining at times, but it's honestly a really unhealthy relationship (between the main character and the main love interest character). He's very controlling and aggressive. Still, it is usually unhealthy relationships that make entertaining novels to read.

I did enjoy reading about how the male characters were all interested in the main female character for no reason. That they get irrationally jealous of each other over her. That they all wanted to marry her despite not really knowing her at all. Unfortunately, when I thought about it further, the main female character doesn't actually have much good points except being pretty. Still, I did find most of the story an entertaining read but I had to stop reading.

Might give it another chance at a later date but for now, dropped. I honestly don't think there's anything wrong with a bit of an age gap but the fact that the leads met so young is what makes it weird. FL was 6 years old while ML was 15.
Spoiler

Although there was no romance shown during this time, there's no way ML wasn't somewhat interested with the way he acted towards her. When she turned 13, he made his intentions known and it was so awkward. He was 22 at this point and even he knew their relationship would be hard for others to accept considering their age gap.

Despite this, he continues to pursue her. Constantly hinting at s*xual activity with a 13 year old girl 9 years your junior is just weird.
Other than that, I actually found the novel overall boring. FL dealt with the main antagonist of her previous life within the first few chapters. After that, nothing really happens.
I did find myself feeling bad for the younger sister, though. To be honest, she was 5 years old and from her perspective, her dad locked up her mom and gave away her younger brother. Who wouldn't be upset? The dad was also a major loser, every time he appeared I found myself frustrated.

Okay so I decided to give this one another chance and I've finally completed it. I felt like I had to force myself through the last 30 or so chapters lol. If you can look past the age gap, the first portion of the novel is not bad. The male lead is honestly a creep and is constantly making things difficult for the female lead. He can be romantic at times though.

The main thing I disliked about this novel was how much emphasis the author placed on side characters and their budding romances. For instance, I couldn't care less about Zhao Liuli but it felt like her relationship was constantly being shoved in my face. I had to skim so many chapters to get through her parts. Not to mention the other side characters.

Spoiler

Also, what the heck was up with the mom side plot? The author made it seem like she was going to be extremely important but she only showed up for a few chapters before she was scolded by the FL and disappeared again. What was the point in that? She should've just died honestly as her reasoning for leaving her two children behind made no sense.

Next, I felt that the "justice" some of the female characters faced was too heinous. Gao Dan Yang being forced to marry an enemy prince simply because she liked the ML was insane. Even after one of the ML's plots directly resulted in her husband beating her and forcing her to miscarry their child, no one really cared. She didn't do anything wrong other than being a tad bit hostile toward FL.

As for Wei Zheng, in this lifetime, I truly felt bad for her. Nothing she did made her deserving of her ending. Even in death, no one cared for her other than her mother.

Lastly, I have no idea what the author was on when they decided to give Li Song a side story. Even in his "redemption arc" he still harassed and bullied FL. But in this instance, she was manipulated into marrying him. I can't imagine she lived very well. Why would the author do this?
[collapse]

In the end, there was just so much I feel that the author completely forgot about. Like what happened to Li Xiang? Wei Bao Shan? Zhao Zheng?

I feel that they focused too much on unnecessary romances between the side characters rather than details important to the plot. I wouldn't imagine myself rereading this but I'm glad I got through it considering this is a classic.

I liked this when I first read but now that time has passed and I’ve come back to it again with fresh eyes, this sh*t is gross as hell. The scene where the ML comes back after two years and he’s 22 and the FL is 11 is actually sickening. He goes on about how beautiful she is and how much he wants to see how soft her lips are 🤢. And he says that if she doesn’t stop looking at him like that, he’ll become addicted to her... I’m... more>> sorry what?!? I can’t justify this with her mental age is actually 18 or whatever cus he does not know that. He may think that she’s “mature for her age” or whatever, but to him and everybody else, she is 11 years old. With these historical novels, the age gaps are pretty much always gonna crazy by today’s standards but usually they're not this large and the ML isn’t such a h**ny creep like in this one. I liked this when I read it before but now I just can’t get behind it 🤷 <<less

The novel is not perfect, but I like it very much. It has a lot of plot holes and some things that would make you uncomfortable but I personally think that it's okay considering the

timeline where the novel is set.

What do I like in this novel:

Spoiler
    • first, the personality of the Female Protagonist (Wei Luo), she is innocent, gentle and calm on her outside appearance but she is really a scheming person. She's a white lotus and I love her for that.
    • her ways of scheming and taking revenge is so satisfying, not only she save herself from being sold by her stepmother, she also save her twin brother.
    • i LOVE the 2nd Male Lead, I personally want him to be with the FL. He's character is so much alive and entertaining compared to the Male Lead. I love his side story and how I wish that I could read more about his side story.
    • the novel's plot line is very easy to follow and what's happening, the characters and their development is okay for me
    • there is no palace fighting, the ML didn't have harem (thankfully), there is no evil mother-in-law, the relationship of the FL's father and her twin brother towards her are very good.
[collapse]

What I don't like in this novel:

Spoiler
  • her half-sister character development is not very well written, at first I thought she's just jealous of FL because she's the favorite daughter/sister of their father and brother. But as the time goes by her hatred towards the FL continues to grow which I think is very unreasonable since the FL didn't really do anything to her unless she provoke the FL.
  • the age gap between the FL and ML, I know that it's common for the ancient girls to be married young but the ML is showing interest in the FL while she's 5 years old! While reading this, I just made myself forget about their age gap.

The story in itself is quite good but the age gap is a problem here, just like in many other novels (it’s creepy af but this is a historical novel so it’s not as bad as the novels set in modern times). You either decide to stop thinking about it, or you get mad about it. If you can’t stand really big age gaps then do not read this.

Probably one of the most enjoyable (despite some minor things I dislike) I've read? Historical and for once the FL cuts all problems at the root. No nonsensical "i know this person will plot against me but I'll wait till they get me to retaliate". This has saved alot of people's lives.

Third time rereading.

It makes ABSOLUTE sense for the FL to be vicious and 'hateful' if you must, many of you I assume will let things slide until you get harmed irreversibly.

FLs in a historical setting need strength, whether they... more>> protect themselves ruthlessly or by other means.

I think many people still want to ignore that this IS ancient times, not the mention she's older than 6 years old mentally.

I'm not labelling ML as a pe*o.... Again it's a historical setting, , , and we haven't seen him say he's especially into little girls. Which I'd assume is NOT the case. <<less

I placed such a high expectation to this story but I didn't expect to be disappointed in the end.

The age gap between the FL & ML is something I can't take. It makes me uncomfortable... I can't endure reading the time when Wei Luo reaches the age 15, Zhao Jie will be 24! It makes me sick to my stomach! It could've been alright if the encounter between Wei Luo and Zhao Jie was a little later in the story or when Wei Luo is a little older than 8... more>> or Zhao Jie is not older than 15...

Hate when Changhong has little to none weight in the story. I'm not pleased by the explicit bias Wei Kun has. Changhong clearly came from Jiang Miaolan and is Wei Luo's twin, he's supposed to receive the same amount the FL gets or probably gain a little more because typically, in this ancient setting, boys are more valuable than girls... I felt it was useless to make Changhong's existence as Wei Luo's brother if he's going to be sitting in the sidelines for the most part of the story.

Dropped the story at Chapter 21 because I felt its getting boring watching a 15yo resume her schemes in a six yo girl's body. I shouldn't read stories with children, currently in the process of forming their personalities, as the MC. <<less

I love this story. The storyline is a little messy; an 8 year old child already being promiscuous and doing crimes?????? The “villainess” of a sister is also understandably upset with the FL, her family definitely doesn’t like her and prefer the FL. BUT I don’t care. I love this book!!! I love the petty FL!!! And I absolutelyyyyyy love the ML. Kinda wish I was the FL in order to marry him. They’re relationship isn’t for everyone. They’re age gap is huge and they start exploring early on. Keep... more>> this in mind before reading. Some people mind, some don’t. I really love them together though and don’t see anything wrong with their relationship at all. For the time period I thought it was pretty mild. <<less

The plot and characters only deserve 3 stars at best, but the writing style is good so that makes it 4 stars.

MC is physically perfect and described by the characters as having a good personality. Personally, I find her personality to be very stuck-up and self-centered. She often looks down on others and allowed her past life to dictate her attitude even when things are obviously heading at a different direction. She also does not bother to care about others, even when she's causing harm, as long as she is... more>> fine. Meanwhile, ML is a h0rny person who loves MC - that's it. I did not see any indication of him having a deeper character than that. MC's twin is a bland character. He's very stagnant and does not have another character aside from being a sis-con.

The romance between MC and ML is good though. It has its shining moments. The translations are great too! On the other hand, there are a lot of cannon fodders in this novel that just makes you disappointed with their endings. The CFs are pitiful because the author did them dirty.
Spoiler

Cannon fodders:

Song Hui - blame the author for hurting this angel

Li Song - he was questionable during latter parts of the story, but he was heavily dealt with at the beginning when he does not deserve to be treated like that

Wei Zheng - author just hates her. Her mom got separated from her, her family treats her as air, even relatives do not care about her. She's a product of bad parenting, but she's not really evil. Then, her life ended up being full of sufferings. She just wanted to get laid, she did not deserve what happened afterwards.

Gao Danyang - the empress promised to act as matchmaker between her and ML. She wasted her youth for ML because the adults around her made her hopeful that she will be his wife. It's the adults who are at fault here.

All in all, this is a pretty good light read however it has some plot holes and it lacks a lot of character development. I've read The Royal's Cute Little Wife from the same author and I found it better than this one. It is a light read, however some parts of it have the tone down to a revenge rebirth novel and others are simply pampering by overbearing male lead romance trope. It is too heavyhanded to be fluffly and yet it is too simple to be revenge story.... more>> I don't feel I wasted my time reading this however I keep thinking more in the bad points than in the positive ones.

A lot of people seem unhappy with the ages of the main couple however this is probably historically accurate so I don't mind it too much. Rather, I'm not confortable with the ML's attitude. I know he's meant to be a black-bellied, overbearing character however I still feel he's way too forceful. I dreaded his scenes because he always forced or coerced the MC to put up with anything he wished to do. This is probably a chinese novel trope as well as the painful s*x, however I'm still very discomforted by the constant lack of consent.

Good points:

    • The translator is so wonderful! Not only the translation quality is superb, she also includes the best explanations and images of chinese food, clothing and items. You really feel you're not missing anything.
    • The Empress and Emperor's story is pretty interesting and it evolved in a way that actually makes sense.
      Spoiler

An outstanding female general that helped him win his throne and focused her life purpose on her children after she had to leave the battlefield to become empress. She was a proud, determined person who cared about her family the most. The emperor crossed her bottom line when he failed to protect her family and treasure her love. I think the ending with a regretful emperor was pretty fitting.

      [collapse]
    • Wei Luo did call out the ML on his hypocritical views and at the last chapters their relationship did get better in the sense the ML actually seemed to listen to her opinions properly.
    • The author included an issue that's rarely seen in this kind of novel
      Spoiler

even if it didn't have a huge impact on the plot and it was easily solved, I appreciate that the MC actually had fertility problems that weren't related to someone else's schemes

      [collapse]
    • Fourth aunt Qi-shi is amazing! She's the most likeable character to be honest. She doesn't get as many scenes as we'd like to read about but she's a wonderful woman.
      Spoiler

Even if Wei Luo thinks she doesn't really treats her as her own daughter, we sure can see that she does. She just didn't need to scold her at any point.

      [collapse]
      She's reasonable, warm and helpful.
Bad points:

    • In my personal opinion, the protagonist is too bland to be likeable. She has standards for what she wants (which she got with a husband that only is good to her) but she doesn't really have many traits apart from being vain, beautiful and stubborn. She's rather passive and a total pushover since the romance started. Apart from the 6-7 years old arc that happened inmediately after her rebirth where she actually put effort into her schemes to protect herself and her brother, she never really seemed to do much. She could get violent at times but she rarely had to even act since most of the time the ML or others did all the work so she could have a smooth sailing life. The most bothersome part is that she's so aimless... she simply doesn't seem to have any dreams or a purpose in life. We only know she invested a lot of time and effort in her beauty. That's all. Her twin brother is even blander and he's just quiet and loves his sister. That's all we know of him. He's a rather robotic character. He follows her around, carries her when she's tired and... that's it actually. He's the most underdeveloped character of them all.
    • The maddening lack of consent! It's so prevalent I just couldn't stop feeling bad.
      Spoiler

It's even worse because of her young age when the s*xual stuff begins (she was 13 years old)

      [collapse]
He even favored groping her breasts even though she clearly expressed it was hurting her and it only drove him to be rougher. The ML could have runied her reputation so many times whenever he stole her away to a corner and threatened her with being heard or noticed so she'd accept his groping and kisses. Even if he's oh so powerful, there was still a risk and she was known to be engaged to someone else. She not even liked him in that way at the time. And later, did she even really like him or did she come to accept him due to gratitude for his help and pampering? Was it resignation? I'm not sure. Even the ML thinks at some point that he has to pamper her because she'd leave with whoever treated her the best It felt totally like a s*xual assault most of the time. It was just wrong.

    • Maybe it's meant to be like that but the whole pampering relationship between the MC and ML was like a pet-master thing (it got better close to the end). He is indulgent with Wei Luo but it seems he's pampering a pet more than a wife or life companion. He doesn't respect her thoughts, her refusals or even her feelings. Everything is about his own desires and his kindness to her is because of his own whims, he doesn't really seems to respect her. He touches her whenever and however he likes. He is good to her because she's his. He keeps her at home and if she dares disobey him then he will punish her with s*xual stuff. Meh, I'm not really feeling their "love story" at all.
    • Plot holes and some facts that don't make sense. The nanny disappears all of sudden after the childhood arc (or is that normal? I've read in other novels about nannies that go with their misses when they marry but in this one she just vanishes and she's never mentioned again). The Duke's family seems to have good servants and informants however they also are strangely clueless at some points. The duke and first uncle are useless and rarely even mentioned. The political stuff is too easily solved out of sight.
      Spoiler

We don't get answers about the fate of the Chen clan (empress militar family) apart from a mention of her father probably force to retire. The rival family (consort's family) doesn't seem to do much either. for all that the emperor was supporting them to supposedly suppress Chen family.

      [collapse]
    • The fate of cannon fodder in this novel is truly too cruel.
      Spoiler

Zhen was unpleasant and didn't like Wie Luo but apart from her despicable plot with aphrodisiac she never harmed anyone and yet she was repeatedly gang r*ped, mistreated by her husband, humiliated by her in laws and forced to kill herself. That was way too horrible. The concubine sister who pushed Wei Luo also had an awful fate punished by a forced abortion and being sold to the red district. Gao Dayang was forced to marry a foreigner promiscous prince and was beaten by her husband to the point he caused her to miscarry.

The story is good just timeline is confusing. Anyway, the MC isn't really likable. The main issue is her bias to the My brother, and the fiancee.

Sigh.

Now the issue mainly is how she broke poor hui's heart. I'm more mad at the author, why would she let the feelings grow? Poor dude (in my imagination) looked like he lost the will to breathe and basically live.

Still though the book isn't bad, I like reading it until she dumped Hui, then I was like know what, I'm done.

Chongfei Manual focused more on the development of relationship between the two MCs. Not many conflict appear in the story, and the author also did not drag a conflict between MCs and side characters for too long. I appreciate the fluff, the way the ML pining for the FL and pampered her since her childhood is quite adorable. Some people might find the age gap a bit uncomfortable, but since the story is set in ancient China, I think it is still quite acceptable (as most girls married young back... more>> then).

FL can be a bit ruthless and cunning sometimes, but not too severe. She's also very protective of her twin brother, whom I really hope to be able to get a little side story about his thoughts. The ML is portrayed as a cold-blooded, vicious and ruthless prince, but the novel did not say much about this side of his and focus more on his interaction with FL.

It was quite an enjoyable read for me and the translation is great, hats off to the author and the translating team. <<less

pretty good; however, I sometimes think that the author should have made this either a really fluffy novel without cruelty, or they should have created a better balance regarding the viciousness of certain characters - now it's a mixture of both and kind of odd at times. Li Song, the emperor, and Wei Luo's mother also really made me mad with their inconsistent and hypocritical behavior...

Overall, the story is pretty cute with plenty of fluffy moments and revenge exacted on all necessary parties. I like that Wei Luo most of... more>> the time wasn't the one to exact the revenge, since it would be illogical for her to be a genius at scheming like Shen Miao for example because she only lived as a village girl in her last life. <<less
