Counterattack of the Cannon Fodder Chambermaid

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

First of all, this is not a story where the cannon fodder chambermaid counterattacks and gives the main wife a beat-down!

As a lowly s*ave who had been sold a total of six times, Xiao Hua has long become apathetic to her situation.

In her past life, she was a cannon fodder chambermaid who was beaten to death. In this life, she decided to turn over a new leaf and live honestly, yet in the end still ended up being sold off.

This prince’s estate seems to have pretty good benefits? She could be released at twenty-five, and they’d arrange a place for her to live under their jurisdiction? They’d even get rid of her s*ave records?

Great! That’s great! Xiao Hua thus decided to stay in the Jing Prince Estate and do her job properly. It’s a shame she could never overcome the whims of fate….

The master she serves is a “mute boy”, with several influences above him watching like tigers eyeing their prey. To say she doesn’t want to be pampered is definitely a lie. This is the road to survival of a “discreet girl” who clings on to her master’s leg and is solely pampered, yet feels that he never pampers her.

The road from a cannon fodder chambermaid to a beloved imperial consort is a little long….

I read this a while ago too and writing this review is reminding me of how much I liked it. It was such a sweet low stakes novel and I just love Xiao Hua so much. I thought the Jing prince was pretty awesome too but I just love all the choices that xh makes. Like you don't ever have to kick your head annoyed with her decisions because everything they do just makes sense. I also loved the little eunuch (I forgot his name). This book is well written... more>> the translation is great. The FL reincarnates and she just tries her best not to die the way she did in her past life and she really tries her best and makes all the right choices. I just like her and how smart she is.

This book is worth repeating because it has no unnecessary drama, the romance is top notch and it's just sweet. <<less

First of all, I'm sorry if the English here is bad, because I'm writing this using Google Translate. Normally, I don't write comments because my English isn't very good, but while browsing randomly, I noticed that a harem tag was added to this book. When I examined it to find out the reason, I saw Jenagreen's extreme hatred. Honestly, I thought jg added the tag without reading it completely, but it seems jg read quite a lot. But if jg read that much, I can't imagine how they didn't understand... more>> that the so-called reality actually includes an ancient period.

This is NOT a HAREM story

Spoiler

Jg criticized the ML's previous life. In both his previous and current life, the emperor married him to the daughter of a respected clan. There are also beauties gifted to him, which are generally seen in other historical novels. I'm not trying to normalize it; I'm someone who runs away when I see a harem, but these were normal for a high-ranking prince at that time. Since he is with them and has a duty to produce an heir, naturally, he has a child.

As for his second life, I read it before, so I don't remember exactly, but he wants to take firm steps and he doesn't like those people, so he doesn't get together with them. He pretends to be mute to avoid drawing attention in the rivalry for the throne.

Regarding what happened with the FL later, FL is actually one of the servants that ML's assistant chose because he wanted to be the heir for ml. She comes with a few servants. Because these maids are excessive, ML fires them. There's also a r*pe incident because he was drunk. This is also mentioned in the tags. I don't agree with ML, but after that, FL actively wants ML and ML wants FL. Even later on, there is only FL for ML. So, it would be ridiculous to put a harem tag on it. It would make sense if ML went to other women or liked them, but he only likes FL. That's why I removed the tag.

Even though I don't understand why Jenagreen stayed with a book she hate for so long, I would like to respond to other points. First of all, ML does not replace FL. To protect her, he throws out a bait that will attract temporary attention because then the fight for the throne started and the princes began attacking each other. Naturally, he wanted to protect FL and his children. Moreover, the empire didn't fall into his lap. He had the necessary intelligence and allies. He took advantage of the opportunity behind the quarreling princes and played brilliantly. I don't approve of FL immediately pardoning him, but by reading the tags here, you can more or less guess what you will encounter.

[collapse]

I don't think it's justified to shower this book with so much hate. It may not appeal to everyone, but I see it as a successful book in its own way. Personally, if you like romance between the main characters and stories about raising children with some plot in between, this book may be suitable for you. If you are looking for a book that is always very plain and uneventful and won't worry you, this may not be for you. But I recommend you give it a try. <<less

Story was annoyingly SLOW.

The author has a bad habit of over describing and sharing boring facts. What a tedious read.

Do you like s*upid characters? Do you like not OP, bland main leads?

Here is you book then.

-This is a HAREM story, the ML is a reborn prince with a low IQ, and EQ, and he already has a wife and 3 concubines.

Spoiler

In the current life, he only slept with the wife and his main concubine, but doesnt have any children.

In his previous life, he had a more active s*x life and did seep with them all.

Moreover, he imp**gnated them all, and did have 3 children with 2 of them.

There wouldve been more children by more women if not for the miscarriages caused by harem drama.

[collapse]

If someone had bothered to mention this somewhere in their review instead of b*tching about the ML forcing the 15yr old servant to have s*x with him, I would've skipped this boring book.

I manually added the Harem tag to this book, since it wasnt included before.

  • FL is a skinny, flat chested girl with a pretty face. Shes not an OP person, not amazing at anything.

    She really dont stand out.

Her skill is keeping her head down, and later once she's with the Prince, she becomes a doormat.

There are better looking girls and with better status than her, she seriously had no personality.

She was timid and quiet, the type that faded into the background.

No idea why the ML fell for her, its a case of because the author said so.
  • ML - the prince - barely talks, so people thinks he is a mute. Its important to know that the male lead in the first 30 chapters isnt the ML! Author loves to over share, and waste your time.

You get the sense that the ML was born kinda slow, maybe he was dropped on his head as a baby, or maybe something else happened to him as a child.

He is slow, and lacks common sense due to some mental disability? This makes this man seem s*upid and incompetent.

Also he's irritatingly indecisive. These are traits you cant have in a leader,
    Spoiler

but he becomes an emperor later? This is laughable.

    [collapse]

DNF - When the FL started talking/thinking like a doormat.

About halfway into the story, she starts thinking how she will accept sharing the ML with other women, his wife, his concubines and other girls that will come in the future, she'll just share him.

Spoiler

At one point in the story, ML dumps her and their children (for her own good- to keep her safe), he makes her believe that he dumped her for a new concubine.

He went as far as moving this new woman into her home, her room, she wore the FL's clothes and jewelry, and she thinks he is now sleeping with her in their room.

Months pass, and when he comes back, she instantly forgives all without needing to hear an explanation and has s*x with him. What a doormat!

And in the morning, he leaves again for the other woman

without saying anything to her.

[collapse]

I guess this is why people are calling this book "realistic", I just call someone like this a spineless doormat.

For me, the book dragged and I didnt find the 2 main leads appealing. <<less

It's a slow slow burn and like the summary says there is no revenge or plot twist. The second half of the book still has a bit more going on but because the POV is from the concubine's side, a lot of the palace related plot just gets explained in a few lines.

Good :

Slow burn with genuine connection between the leads in the 2nd half of the book.

... more>> Female leads decisions make sense in connection to her history.

Bad :

At the beginning neither of the leads are interested, so you will feel very uncomfortable reading the intimate scenes. In modern books when the leads simply sleep with each other, you know that the female lead is also interested in the male lead. Here, they only think that the other is good looking but end up sleeping with each other because they were drunk and then because the male lead liked sleeping with the female lead. It takes a long (too long) before the female lead decides to take genuine interest in her husband.

Plus the female lead ends up becoming the Empress, when it's clear her low birth will not allow that to happen. I would have liked for her to continue being the favored concubine.

It's obvious that the male lead in pretty smart in the 2nd half when dealing with his ministers. I wish the writer had explained his ascension a bit more. That was obviously a clever plot line.

The female lead being of low birth bring nothing to the table for the Emperor. He keeps her hidden in the 2nd part and she doesn't interact with other rich wives in 3rd part. I wish they had shown that despite her low birth, she grew her power in the Harem on her own.

Conclusion :

If you manage to get through the 2nd part, the 3rd part is much more interesting. Don't expect a super clever Empress, this is more of a supporting role of the female lead in her own story. <<less

  • Both of them are rebirth (although they didn't meet in their first life)
  • They grow together as persons and became better
  • Kinda smutty but in the limit
Bad points:

  • Not much plot, I guess.

i struggled to finish this, tbh. I read fierce consort first and enjoyed it very much so I followed up with this. Don't get me wrong the story is good, the flow isn't bad either. The thing that put me off was the not so fresh perspective. If you're like me, who read fierce consort first as well, you will have certain 'expectations' but after a 'copy' and 'paste' type of thing in few chapters it became a bit stale. It could have been better. I mean going through the... more>> same events in connected books is not a new thing but it boils down to perspective, new insights. I mean, that's just me but I'm probably wrong. I still gave it four stars though I would have rated it 3.5 if possible. Oh sadly this put me off reading the farmer story. Maybe I should have read that one first.",) <<less

Very traumatising to read.

This novel was the reason I stopped reading Chinese historical romances. Yes it might be realistic but I believe in a fictional novel where it is based on the author’s imagination, it was not necessary, and I’m talking about the r*pe. Because I don’t know how you all aren’t saying it, but she was repeatedly r*ped and was in a situation where she couldn’t say no or retaliate.

Even if the prince “didn’t know” it’s not excuse for raping someone. And even if it was mostly fluffy at... more>> the end and I did finish reading it for the sake of finishing it I hated it the whole time. Even if she’s happy in the end how did she make a life with someone who r*ped her and wasn’t willing to understand her? Decent novel with development of the female lead from a maid to a favoured concubine, you do end up feeling bad for the main wife in this novel actually all the way right to the end. The FMC is basically kept in a greenhouse and sheltered by the male lead with very little intrigue or schemes due to how thorough he is and how she herself hardly puts herself in bad situations.

The start of this novel details her life on the lowest rung, the middle section is the lovey dovey... more>> parts and the end is where she's at the pinnacle of life with some schemes in between. Overall a good story to read I can't say I like this FMC more than Yanyan from the next novel in the same world. <<less

This is a great story. I like how it is more realistic when it comes to the main couple. The development and treatment of the FL especially in the early part is really sensible. This is not the type of story to give you heartbreak and misunderstanding for no reason.

Mask Feast writes very realistic historical fiction, including power/class/gender inequity. This is NOT fluff.

FL is a reborn maid in Ancient China. In her previous life she was an ambitious maid who climbed the young master's bed to get ahead as a concubine, but ended up dying in a harem scheme anyway. This life, she wants to keep her head down, stay an honest maid, and age out of servitude.

Unfortunately, she gets caught up in a noble household's mess and is sold far away to a desolate vessel Prince's estate. She... more>> ends up as that ML Prince's maid.
Spoiler

He's got a small harem he ignores, she can't say no since she's just a maid (so avoid this novel if you get triggered), and he's very awkward and stilted. Somehow, over a few years, his EQ rises and they end up in a honeypot sweet romance and it's a loyal, sweet, happy ending all around, as they become monogamous Empress and Emperor, he's a great Emperor outwitting his officials, and there's even epilogues of their own children's marriages.

[collapse]

For some reason, there are very, very few historical BG novels being completely translated (almost all completely translated Chinese novels lately have been BL/Yaoi/Shounen Ai), so I'm going to rate this 5 stars to thank the translator for finishing the translation and because I like this novel. If you like Eight Treasure Trousseau or To Be A Virtuous Wife, you'll like this.

Spoiler

The FL is reborn, the ML Prince is reborn (in his first life he died after his brother ascended the throne, so this life, he's going to take it for himself), there's another brother Prince (who is the ML of The Lofty Fierce Consort who is on his third life after being transmigrated, then reborn again), and a friendship with a transmigrated girl (who is the FL of the Prestigious Family's Young Lady and the Farmer).

[collapse]

Okay, now I have to go read The Lofty Fierce Consort and the Prestigious Family's Young Lady and the Farmer, since the novels all intersect. <<less

If I was to talk about the positives first the characters progression and personality the are amazing and it was surprisingly more historically accurate than I would have thought but that leads me to my next point

The amount of s*xual assault was triggering especially since it's written in the pov of the victim so the descriptions are graphic. It was hard to enjoy the story especially since the ML committed some of it.

He does get better though and becomes more caring but Christ those first few chapters were hard to... more>> get through

People have called the MC passive but I disagree because in the situation she's in she doesn't have alot of options, in the story she is a s*ave and her life is not important and it is clearly stated and shown how easily it could be taken away.

It's also crucial to note that for most of the novel she is a minor and at the start of the novel is around 12 or 14 and is being put in this stressful situation. She's not transmigrated from the modern world and isn't a god brained genius with a secret storage room on her wrist she's a normal child who's trying to survive. Even in her last life she dies in her twenties. Her actions make complete sense to me and I applaud her for doing the best with her situation.

I will say though the ending was fluffy but a bit lackluster <<less

1. MC is too passive.

I have read countless reborn stories and compared to them this MC is too passive to the point I don't get the purpose of her being reborn. In first few chapters of the novel MC uses her past experiences in the backyard to stay out of troubles but after she was sent to the prince's manor, she barely uses her past experiences and always, always relies on her servents and ML. She is a woman who spent her entire past life fighting with other concubines and... more>> mistresses in the backyard so she ought to know some tricks to deal with these problems.

Another thing I noticed is she acts too childish. When an eunuch under the ML arranges another girl to serve him (who has exact same facial features and temperament of MC), instead of dealing with that eunuch who acted way out of line, she cries infront of ML so ML acts on her behalf. When ML arranges her to live in another place with her children for her own safety, she packs her bags and run away with her children without trying to find out why ML tried to send her away. Even after she entered the palace as the most favoured concubine she seeks help from that head eunuch to punish people who tried to harm her child. Sigh! She has zero involvement in even her own affairs. ML, head eunuch and head maid always clear up her messes.

At the end of the story she becomes the empress since she is the only woman ML loves but I feel it is an insult for the title of empress since she is too incompetent and only knows how to please the ML and produce children.

2. The story is too boring and unrealistic.

This is a slice of life story so I can understand the somewhat slow pacing, but in the latter half of the story it becomes a trainwreck. The journey of ML from an unfavoured wassel prince to the emperor seems too unrealistic. The schemes of ML is too simple and filled with loopholes. There are so many plot holes in the story like that time when ML discovered a silver mine.. But it was never addressed anywhere in the story.

The way ML deals with the court and officials is too unrealistic to the point of being cringey. He allows the officials to argue to the point of them being tired?? And them stick to his original decision like a dictator. I wonder this is the same "slice of life" story.

3. The romance is too dull.

Actually there is no romance at all. It begins with eunuch pushing MC in to ML's bed to produce "heirs". Then MC get pregnant, then she gets pregnant again, then again.. Actually there is like 1/4 of story dedicated to her pregnancy, breast feeding and issues of premature babies. The main wife scheming to make her infertile is one of main plotline and she was beaten to death in last life because she schemed to get other concubines infertile. So rather than romance it is more about producing babies to have a stable life in the backyard.

Honestly this story can end with 50 chapters. I have read other works of the author like feng xing and prestigious family's young lady and farmer which have actual plotlines and characters who are actively engaging with the plot. I'm very dissapointed with this story because the author can do better. <<less

A really great novel. The translation is top notch too.

It's really realistic development vise and the author is really diligent with researching about history. The progress from indifference ---> convenience and resignation ---> fondness ---> love was really well done.

I like the MC and disagree with some of the other reviews about her not using her head in the 2nd part of the novel. She used it well by not complicating her life and knowing what kind of person ML was and making her choices accordingly. Based on her life... more>> and the times she lives in, the fact that she has a strong sense of 'acting according to her status' and yielding to ML's behavior is understandable. She didn't transmigrate nor was she reincarnated with memories of a modern world. She regressed after having lived a few years as a concubine in a s**tty young master's courtyard and was beaten to death, and all of that was because she schemed and fought, so her choosing not to do that unless needed is pretty understandable.

As for the ML, kind of dislike, but kind of like? I dislike that he is, without a doubt, the most realistic depiction of a high ranking man. The disregard for all who he sees as lower than him and inability to actually consider others is real. Tho it does get better as the story progresses, his word and whim is law. Possessiveness is low key because it's never focused on but very obvious. <<less

This is a very slice of life novel that conforms to the life and mindset of ancient women and life where women, especially s*aves, are less than a human. If you like harem fight, this is for you.

I don't like the first to third part that much, even at the part where ML slowly changed because of her. His feelings just don't feel real- at least in that arc. There are also instances where I think MC is weak and fickle, making me pissed a lot, but I also know... more>> that this is how ancient women's mindset works. Like seducing the ML even if she promised herself not to and something else like that, like the white lotus in other novels. However, she does have a point as it was her only choice.

I can't say much for the ML, there are times he's strong but his presence is weak. He's amusing yes, but not really to the point its making me smile. For the people around ML, they ofc also came to like MC.

This novel, think of The Story of Ming Lan. But duller, I guess?

Though what I like is their character development. After that part, you'll naturally come to like them more.

What I really like most in arcs here is the life in palace.
Spoiler

yes they became emperor and MC empress (after they both got rid of the other obstacles only, ofc), dw not much court interference for mc's ascension.

In this part, their feelings are clearer, and definitely no misunderstanding. My smiles also appeared here often.

MC and ML are both very lowkey people but this also added to a bit of a realistic flare to both. Luo Jing and Xiao Hua kept with the conventions of the time but also gave off the feeling that they wanted to break free from such albeit passively because they were both reincarnators. However, neither of them would be willing to take a beating and retaliate if needed be.

Personally, I find the side-characters are really what brought the story together. I especially have a soft spot for the Eunuch... more>> and the Court Lady who accompanied Luo Jing and later supported Xiao Hua. But all in all, the writer did well in keeping things linear and not adding a lot of minor characters or side-arcs.

Spoiler

The story had a quite a bit of bedscene teases but wasn't too graphic about it though I think the author did well in slowly making such scenes more intimate.

[collapse]

The story was really more focused on fleshing out relationships of characters and how they react to situations in a rather realistic manner. I wouldn't call it political intrigue or downright fluff but more something in the middle. I would recommend it for people looking for a political romance novel that's not too sweet but not to mind-boggling as well. <<less

Spoiler

But my heart ached along with Xiaohua's, when she took her children and two loyal maids away from Prince Jing, thinking that he had betrayed her. That whole arc was amazing, and deserving of the five stars alone!

To the other reviewers who rated this poorly because they viewed the ML as having non-consensual s*x with the MC, I have to disagree. Read it in context, it's ancient China. Besides, I didn't think it was non-consensual. Rough yes, but she knew what was happening and clearly accepted it as her fate.
