One day, Song Shuhang was suddenly added to a chat group with many seniors that suffered from chuuni disease. The people inside the group would call each other ‘Fellow Daoist’ and had all different kinds of titles: Palace Master, Cave Lord, True Monarch, Immortal Master, etc. And even the pet of the founder of the group that had run away from home was called ‘monster dog’. They would talk all day about pill refining, exploring ancient ruins, or share their experience on techniques.

However, after lurking inside the group for a while, he discovered that not all was what it seemed…

Brilliant. This is exactly what you imagine. Or at least what I imagined/hoped:

-MC is a current, real world earth student

-Adventures happen/Student seeks adventures for resources.

... more>> -Light comedy style.

-It feels very realistic. The people feel real. My suspension of disbelief is unbroken, except maybe once when some cultivators were for comedy purposes, obviously exaggeratedly s*upid.

-The "modern" methods of cultivators are great and fitting.

-The characters and interactions are not wuxia-style.

Especially:

-no arrogant "You insulted me, face death" stuff.

-MC is cunning and logic in his actions but acts morally understandable/acceptable.

I'd say it's one of the best xinxia/wuxia/... novels - but it isn't in the typical style. I definitely recommend it - in particular as light, comedic, adventure, self-growth reading. <<less

One of the best reads I've had in a while. Solid characters, solid humor, great pacing and the plots try to stay interconnected even when things go off the deep end. The humor is well balanced, without it being obnoxious or overly rampant to the point of derailing plot. Then for a modern take on xianxia, it is probably the most enjoyable and sensible series I've read to date.

There is fighting, but the focus is more on the interactions and plot development. As to the current chapters, it still is... more>> a very solid series with my only gripe being that I need to wait for the author to release more chapters. <<less

This is one of the most interesting modern cultivation novels I have read with a level headed MC and a good amount of comedy. Will definitely recommend this one to you all reading this review.

I don't know really I just love this novel 'cause what else could I ask for it? A misunderstanding of Song Shuhang about the cultivators about them being a sufferer of chunnibyou just imagine all those bloods that they'll coughs out and their intestine turning already making my day. But the author was not satisfied just with that he also incorporates the daily things from our lives into the cultivation! Heck cultivators know how to use modern appliances in making pills gj Song Shushang XD XD. *ehem*

Long story short a... more>> good humorous modern day cultivation novel and if you're looking for a good laugh give it a try <<less

This is easily one of the best novels on this site. It is funny and the pacing is perfect. There isn't any retribution based pointless violence and at least thus far the author hasn't used any of the cliches that litter most novels. Really looking forward to the development of Song Shuhang.

My man really wrote the whole review forgetting what genre the novel is.

CCG is a comedy novel with cultivation in it, not the other way around, sure you may not like the humor, but that doesn't mean it is a bad novel.

For example, let's take yours. You said that Shuhang didn't clear the misunderstanding but so what, the novel is a comedy built on misunderstanding, that is what most comedy is. The situation they were put in make a good comedic moment and it was funny, which means the author... more>> succeed in what he wanted to do.

Shuhang didn't need to do that because most other members in that tribulation were already at death's door, so they need to be controlled and perform the technique, Shuhang, on the other hand, have been protected by his Lamia this whole time. Shuhang didn't do it just because he is the MC, he didn't do the posture because he had what is needed to survive through all this. And if you read the novel you would know, Shuhang always has the means to survive. Now for people that don't read CCG, they might think that it is "Deus x Machina", but no, all things he needs are prepared long before he needs to use them, the author didn't pull them out of his ass, CCG has amazing story building and foreshowing

Also, not important but might as well say it, you said that Shuhang didn't clear the misunderstanding but you also forgot what happened before that, literally before one of the people in the tribulation was about to give up, he told Shuhang to give out his will to all the Fairy in the group, to said that he kinda has a crush on all of them. Shuhang even agrees to this, but later when they survive, afraid that Shuhang would still tell the secret, the person tried to talk Shuhang out of it, and what did Shuhang do next, he showed an "oh, I just remembered that" expression, my man literally forgot about an important will. Shuhang is built to be dumb, did you not pick up on that, his nickname and spirit ghost's nickname is "slow-witted Song". You are criticizing a dumb/comedic character for being what he is created for, Shuhang is by all means and purposes a dumbass, and that adds on to, say it with me now, COMEDY

another example, when the group comes together at jiaojiao's mansion before that Shuhang have one of his senior, an immortal cook, cook a full court for him. In the progress of waiting he ate it with Sixteen, and little Shi. After the senior arrive, he invited them to eat because they are immortal level cooking, and it can help boost their cultivation but he forgot to mention that it was cooked by an immortal cook so the senior wasn't interested in it. This shows that Shuhang has the best intention but because he is dumb and airhead, he forgot to tell them. Further showing his dumbness isn't a plothole but is a character trait, because he is the Main Character of a comedy novel

the story is funny as hell thanks to these misunderstanding

So people, please remember this, CCG is first and foremost a comedy novel. The author succeeds in this beautifully, CCG isn't a milestone for its type of genre for nothing, it the best novel of the "modern chat type+comedy genre" <<less

This is really the best novel I ever read.

I am really picky reader because I can't stand some dumb MC or pus*y MC and when the plot got still I drop right away. There is a lot of novel in my drop list that I haven't read for 100 chapters yet.

... more>> But this novel is really amazing because I am looking forward even after 1700 chapters. I really respect the author humor that can blend common sense on traditional cultivation system.

If you start reading, I am really sure you will get hooked <<less

hahahahahaha, this story is great!

You definitely have to have read other xianxia before this, because it kind of satirizes a lot of tropes (so it's better to know the information beforehand so you can understand how funny this is), but it's really good even if you're new to xianxia because it also introduces you to it.

It's actually pretty normal at first, things don't really start getting super funny until a certain character gets introduced

*Senior White is..... amazing? I honestly don't know how to describe him expect as Deus EX Machina White, except he also creates a lot of the problems?

[collapse]

There are things that get repeated as old jokes, until the author comes up with a new one every once in a while, but everything is just so entertaining and hilarious that you can ignore some of the shortcomings.

Still a very funny story I would recommend!

.....I kind of don't want to finish it because I'm reading the Raws and don't want it to end.

But I've read the translated parts 3 times already! <<less

A great blend of comedy and plot moments. The character development seems dynamic and world building was alright. Would recommend 10/10

Spoiler

After the main story, the author has released a few extra chapters that wrap up a lot of the hanging plot points. Unfortunately, there are still a few ambiguous details that are left for the reader to decide upon.

While the novel itself is okay there is an unfortunate amount of casual h*mophobia, mentions of child ab*se (beating a child so bad they couldn't get out of bed for example), and undeserved dog mu*der (a cultivator made a dog attack it's owner and then the owner had it killed and nobody did anything about it or cared). So not great from a western point of view, Worst of all is the MC, he is truly s*upid, at every point making the dumbest possible choice again and again and learning... more>> nothing from it because he gets out of it with plot armor based luck. Not only that but by god is this novel slow, 250 chapters in and the MC is only barley half way through the lowest stage, he's at like stage 0.5/9, boring as hell. <<less

Absolutely amazing. Every character is relevant and appears throughout the story. Story focuses on character interactions and not mindless training. It's even a running joke that the MC's cultivation progresses a realm once a month, something that's impossibly quick. There's background plots with his ghost spirit and time travel, immortality and the Heavenly Dao, and a bunch of stuff. Series is a slice of life where he just gets powerful by lucky encounters and interactions with others. Very relaxing compared to straight cultivation novels.

The story is good, well written and interesting to read with many interesting characters, relevant, funny comedy and well woven plot and comedic elements. The only downside so far is how the protagonist seems so underwhelming it's sad. He seems like such an ignorant idiot when he can't fathom the idea that he could further his own knowledge regarding the cultivation world and practices to better fit in and understand his surrounding.

I suppose it was necessary to have such a protagonist in the story to move it further along with... more>> the ideas of the author, yet I can't help but feel pained at how this well developing plot of the story is ruined by a waste of oxygen protagonist and how he is portrayed as this weakling who keeps crying every time something negative happens.

Well that might be an exaggeration - yet that is the impression I got from him, I suppose most readers would enjoy this story more than I enjoyed it. <<less

This light novel is a bit underrated from what I've seen. Nobody bothered to update the chapter list shown here even though you can find good translations up to what I've read. I've read a bit ahead until some dog's wedding but the machine translation is atrocious so I couldn't really decipher what's being said. Anyways for the review of this series:

This is a great read with varied characters. It also has a manhua version which is also great and right now is being copied by other manhua like My... more>> Amazing WeChat and maybe others I forgot. It's basically a comedic xianxia novel that's full of misunderstandings between characters whether they're allies with MC or his enemies. As of what I've read, MC is not really a special type of character that Xianxia and chinese novels are known for. He's just a normal guy surrounded by clout. He sometimes gets overestimated in his abilities though most of the time he's being underestimated even by his peers. He's a typical cultivator but through some sheer luck due to the events of the story and his seniors and threads of fate connecting him to the past and future, he became the fastest cultivator from what's mentioned so far. Though this fact is often forgotten by his peers, not really looking down on him but when they talk about it, they just get depressed. Basically all the events revolve around him but nobody really knows because of maybe from what I can guess the first supreme being? MC is a true neutral character. <<less

This is a spin-off from normal Xianxia genre. Before I say anything, let me give a brief explanation on what Xianxia means. Xianxia is a genre that focuses on the MC embarking on cultivation to be the peak of the celestials (gods). 95% of all MC in Xianxia novels are ruthless, serious, bloodthirsty, vengeful and cares nothing for the life of others.

However, cultivators in this novel instead is made to be happy-go-lucky for most of the part. Sure, those who read normal Xianxia genres before would find this weird and... more>> hard to adapt. But, this is exactly what the author wanted to do. He went and did the opposite of what the Xianxia genres are famous for.

Thus, this is actually a pretty comedic and less serious slice of life story. If you expect it to be something serious and action packed, go somewhere else. This novel is akin to the Gintama manga/anime. It's mostly comedy episodes but serious episodes will also be packed in between, of course with some comedy too.

Thus, get your priorities straight. This is a relaxing and comedic slice of life novel. Like all Chinese novels, the latter parts aren't that good anymore but this novel is still not that bad in overall. <<less

Somehow it went downhill, the original story of a normal dude dealing with cultivation became a mix boring and SAFE adventures of Mary Sue, from the chapter 200 I started to ask "when will this s*upid adventure finish?" and at 453 I gave up because author simply doesn't know how to resume "normal dude deals with cultivation" and will pull one overpowered character over another untill the end of his contract.

Ugh the more I read the funnier it gets! This is by far my favorite story about cultivation. Even if I go back and read from the beginning I still end up unable to stop myself from laughing. The seniors just have such funny personalities and the gap between what is "expected" of cultivators and the reality of the seniors integrating into the modern world and mixing the modern with the supernatural aspects is really entertaining. The coincidences that happen are so amusing that you can't think of it as... more>> "plot armor" because this doesn't feel like a story that takes itself so seriously in the first place. Rather some of the coincidences make you laugh at the MC's misfortune thinking if that happened to your friend, you would make fun of them forever and never let it go, lol. I highly recommend this for people who want to read something that is funny but not s*upid. <<less

I think those who read a lot of xianxia or xuanhuan already know that some good quality humor can go really well with such novels. Add good action, interesting characters and plot to that and you have something like Cultivation Chat Group. This is one of the best among currently translating ones.

This is by far one of my top picks, and I am likely to increase my rating since I have so little to complain about (I just don't like to over-rate things).

The Good:

Very humorous. Nice plotting & situations. Solid MC.

... more>> The BAD:

Not much. The character development is a bit lacking, but considering so many characters are centuries old, they're reasonably not expected to change much. Also, as a comedy, more cartoony characters are to be expected anyway.

I could ALMOST complain about the pacing since it's slower than I'd like- but it's really a matter of translation speed not being high as I'd prefer, the story's pacing is pretty reasonable.

The Different:

When ancient cultivators go online to for social networks, but the 'real world' is still one of conflict, secrets, and treachery things can be different- and they often are...

Quite a good synthesis of 'traditional' meets 'modern'. <<less

As for the story, the story is fun right from the beginning. However, its fun truly begins and skyrockets the moment our MC behind MC, BOSS behind BOSS, Bai Ala appears.

As for the characters, the Asian community all agree on 1 thing: everyone are main characters. Their personality are all so interesting and unforgettable that you can't considered them side character. Even one character, who only lives 1 chapter, is remembered, as "the only normal person in the story so he died" =)) The author puts a lot of empathizes... more>> on side characters that the running joke "Song Shu Hang is actually the side character whose job is eating watermelon seeds, gossiping and telling story" is born. His only unique skill "getting into dream" (and re-live other people experience) aint helping against that running joke either =))

As for cultivating, instead of having chapters with some mumble-jumble bullsh*t about cultivating "knowledge" that pulled straight out of author's ass (which I always skip, those chapters you only need to read the title to know what skill the MC gets, the content is not true in any sense and not relate-able), we have more interesting chapters about adventuring, dungeon raiding, farming creeps, so on. And it is fun.

You know the feeling when you playing RPGMMO game while using trainers AND hugging GM's big thigh? And not only get power-leveled by TOP severs but also get dungeon-blitz assisted by The BOSS Behind The BOSS?

(Hugging someone's thigh= backed by/get carried by someone=get taken under someone's wing)

(trainers=cheat/hack programs)

As for romance, well....

Making creatures in thousands worlds, millions realms getting pregnant, are you fcking scared?

Making creatures, young (1 year old) and old, getting pregnant, are you fcking scared?

Making creatures, regardless of races, getting pregnant, are you fcking scared? <<less
