Everyone in the City of Jing thinks that bestowment of marriage between Xian Junwang and the daughter of the Yi’an Marquis House is to insert a fresh flower into manure.

Xian Junwang was that fresh flower and the Di daughter of Yi’an Marquis House was that manure that was not liked.

It is said that what is heard is false, seeing is believing. Who knows what the truth really is?

This will never be my favorite novel and I never particularly liked our MC, but I cannot deny that this novel was particularly well-crafted and the translation was excellent! So this novel gets 5 stars from me, when my personal preferences tell me to give it 4 stars lol. The author managed to weave a compelling story of political intrigue around a character that has almost no part in it (almost everything happens around the MC, only a few events directly involve her). The story was rich in characters and... more>> drama, but every sentence was pertinent to the storyline - there were no unnecessary characters or side plots. Every sentence contains foreshadowing or something that moves the plot forward - it takes a lot of skill as an author to do that.

When I first started reading, I really did not care for the endless innuendo, vague statements, and insincere relationships. The first third of the novel went quite slow for me. However it does pick up after that and I truly enjoyed the novel from there to the end. <<less

Dear fellow readers,

I have to say, that the author did a great job portraying the characters, the female side characters/cannon folders were not unreasonably jealous of the MC, and acted the way they did because of the society at the time and a couple other circumstances. Not the mention most of the MC's family were actually decent people.

Spoiler

I say most because, the mother of HYL was just an utter disappointment as a mother. She was willing to let her daughter suffer in an obviously unhappy marriage just so her son could be successful, like what the fluff woman. HYL is your daughter! Your flesh and blood! What happened to the so called motherly love!? And when HXW stepped in to help HYL, she called HXW a wh**e! On the other hand, HXW's mother is just a normal mother that actually cares for all her children and was willing to go to great lengths just to protect them. Fortunately the rest of HYL's family actually loved her, her brother and father wanted HYL to divorce her good for nothing husband as soon as they learned about HYL's tragic situation. And even though HYL, herself, was jealous of HXW, she still recognized the fact that HXW saved her and was grateful.

[collapse]

Basically, most of the characters were decent for once and even if they weren't, there were reasonable explanations for most of them, as to why they were like that.

Spoiler

I said "most" this time because, honestly, why is the prince such an imbecile?

[collapse]

Sincerely,

Yours Truly..φ (・ω・`)

Edit: I liked this novel so much that I am currently rereading this novel for the third time. What can I say, this book is to my taste. (Although it may also be due to the fact that I'm stuck at home.) <<less

I love this author's novels, so I'm confident to say her works are always a good read.

Can't really not mention the novel To be A Virtuous Wife because it's set in similar universe and the MC both comes from the entertainment circle in modern era. I personally loved TBVW more, but if you ever read VW, you should read this novel as well, or if you like this novel read VW as well.

Unlike VW, the MC in this novel was a hardworking burnt out actress in her previous life in... more>> modern world, so when she transmigrated to this era she vowed to be lazy. It helps because she's beautiful so she's adored by her family and since she is also filial, her family just sorta indulge her. It's a nice change because a lot of ancient china novel like this has MC in a household woth either messy inner courtyard or cutthroat siblings so she has to be scheming left and right from the start. This one isn't. Her family is a nice loving family just with unpleasant relatives I guess.

Her interaction with ML flows smoothly. The progress of their relationship can be seen and no abrupt change of feelings like sudden falling in love. The MC also shows her maturity as an adult woman and didn't transform into a blubbering mess when met with ML.

I like the fact that the MC beauty is a plot device. Like, many novel has overly described beautiful MC but that's just useless description or just ineffectively used. The beauty of the MC in this novel enabled her to take the moves she make or make the decision she take.

While MC's beauty is certainly the hook for ML's interest, but he isn't immediately head over heels. They relates to each other then reached an agreement to form a positive cooperation from which genuine affection comes.

The race for the throne in this novel is quite intense. ML took the means he had to and MC supported him in her own ways.

This novel is pretty bloody. No one is left a white lotus so it's good.

Shout-out to the dreams of jianghu for translating this novel. As always, the translation is smooth and easy to read. <<less

I like this novel very much even better than TBAVW. Although the story is slow paced at first half but it makes us understand each character. I like how the main couple is in sync. Both have pretty strong personalities. I like how they doesn't fall for each other at first sight. I like how the ML is having dark side. Even though MC says that she is too lazy to stand up for ML but she always protects him when the time comes. I enjoyed couple interaction and how... more>> they understand each other. Even though MC is very lazy but she stand up for herself and the people she cared about. Pretty much I love this novel very much. This story doesn't have the problem of concubine. <<less

I love this more than the "To Be A Virtuous Wife"... The male lead got darker side and the female lead is lazy one but loyal and can defend her own fu.

Plus, the male lead never had a concubine.

Hua Xi Wan is the devastatingly beautiful and beloved daughter of the Yi'an Marquis with the long-transmigrated soul of a modern actress. She is lazy and quietly lives her life with her loving family in the Marquis manor, uncaring that she has a reputation for being too ugly to be seen in public.

The Emperor has been looking for a way to suppress his nephew Prince Xian, so he orders Prince Xian to marry the ugly Hua Xi Wan, in hopes that she will be slighted and her noble family will... more>> come to daggers with Prince Xian. (In those times, married couples did not see each other's faces until their wedding night.) So on the wedding night, Hua Xi Wan's true appearance is a total shock. Fortunately, Hua Xi Wan has a lot more to her than a pretty face, as she becomes the Xian Wangfei (Xian Princess Consort).

Both Hua Xi Wan and Prince Xian are very intelligent and practical. Marrying into the Imperial family requires some major and subtle scheming to stay alive. One thing I liked was that even with the unpleasant events that occur in vying for the throne (which takes over most of the latter story), it's all very, very subtle.

Prince Xian grew up in the Imperial family, what kind of women and schemes has he not seen? Seeing him deal with scheming females quickly and trying to get the lazy heroine on board with his ambitions was entertaining. For example, I didn't understand immediately why Prince Xian was angry when a maidservant broke pottery right in front of him, or a maid revealed a red bracelet in front of him, or why Hua Xi Wan looked oddly at his poorly embroidered sleeve. Fortunately both Prince Xian and Hua Xi Wan are very quietly smart people who can maneuver when people scheme against them.

This is by the same author as To Be A Virtuous Wife, both are slice-of-life romances involving Imperial-arranged marriages to princes quietly vying for the throne, but there are major differences. In contrast to To Be A Virtuous Wife, in this novel, Eight Treasures Trousseau; (a) Hua Xi Wan is the only wife, she has no concubines to manage/control; (b) The Emperor has a dirty secret (c) Prince Xian has an unsavoury habit

; (c) Hua Xi Wan has transmigrated since birth/very young; (d) her family is loving and supportive; and (e) Prince Xian favours her from the start.

I actually liked this novel a lot more after a second reading, because I could better understand the Imperial plotting and the intricate subtleties involves in their manners and protocols. A lot of ideas/ranks are lightly hinted at, rather than outright explained. Fortunately, Hua Xi Wan's modern day acting skills are up to par enough to keep up with the Imperial family.... She is indolent, beautiful, and smart enough to survive. In general, this author writes strong female leads who have self-respect and know how to take care of themselves and live well.

This novel awakened my love for lazy MCs who just want to live a normal and easy life.....

I didn't know I needed this trope until I read this.

The story is definitely quite uncommon and feels detached, which I know not everyone will enjoy, but after spamming the random novels button and getting 2384937 tragedy stories, this was refreshing.

The translation and mood is, definitely, as many others has stated, similar to TBVW, but the core of the story itself, as well as the character, is quite different. The core of the... more>> MC is lazy, to a point where she doesnt want to move, doesn't want to deal with people, and doesn't bother to uncover her husband's secrets (which the ML is thankful for btw, but I see quite a few readers dissatisfied with this). The ML is relatively closed off and the two are like a venn diagram that barely meet in the middle in terms of spheres of influence at first, yet coexist just fine because they don't prod into each other's business unless necessary, which results in little to no misunderstandings between them, before finally developing into mutual understanding and then learning to compromise
Spoiler

ML "spoils" the MC and let her get away with a lot of things quite early on, before she finally reciprocates and gives up her dream of living a peaceful life to be an empress for him.... for a few decades that is....

[collapse]

. Both the MC and ML are quite secluded and self-assured and are independent enough to handle things themselves, respecting the other's issues and space. This, and the fact that the MC is a modern woman with modern views, I feel that her feelings never quite developed past mutual respect which is a little odd for a novel tagged romance, but fully understandable if you think of the setting.

Yes, I know this is tagged as romance, but there isn't really a lot of actual romance going on considering how the two main characters keep to themselves. However, once you stop seeing this as a romance story and more of a historical intrigue story, You'll find this novel to be quite interesting.

This one also requires you to think, different from a lot of other transmigration novels that tell you what other characters are thinking. Here, you are not looking from omniscient eyes, everything is laid as a normal person would see, and whether or not you get the implication depends on your interpretation and understanding of the common trope. I find that my interpretation when I first read this and when I read it now differ, this also adds to the readability of the novel as a whole, and for someone who likes to nitpick and analyze texts, this was a really fun adventure for me because there's so much to uncover, and so many ways to interpret all of the character's actions.

oh, a little warning:

  • definitely do not read this if you're not too used to reading "historical" romances because unlike many others, the author does not adopt an omniscient 3rd person POV and you will probably have no idea why this leads to another event or why someone is angry and all.
  • definitely do not read this at 1 am when you're struggling to keep your eyes open. You will fall asleep, but not because the story itself is boring, but because the whole thing is so subtle that everything feels peaceful, a little too peaceful, unless you're fully aware of your thoughts you may not notice anything is particularly wrong.....
There are many subtleties you'll miss if you're already thinking about your sweet-sweet bed at home, or you haven't read enough transmigration novels to understand and interpret what the other characters imply by doing this or that so try to read this while being focused and have some understanding of the common tropes and methods of scheming in these kinda novels. <<less

This story made me think a lot and that is saying something. It's the second novel from this site and it left me quite puzzled. It felt like a classic story but on some parts it doesn't add up. It's like going inside the dimly lit tunnel, you could see the outlines of treasures on the way but you could never be truly certain if they are there or not, so your only choice is to keep moving forward. It was lacking in some sense but was interesting. If I... more>> could read the original work perhaps it might change my views.",) <<less

In my opinion, this book is an amazing piece of work. I personally think of this novel as a literary piece rather than an e novel. The writing style is amazing. For once, I was motivated to read just because of the writing style in the sense where there is a lot of foreshadowing in this novel rather than reading for the romance of the female and male leads.

It is true that this novel does not explicately explain every single details but by not explaining it gives a sense of... more>> mystery and suspense in each chapters. As readers, we would have to interpret what certain actions and words meant. It was really interesting to me honestly since most novels would explicately say how they feel while this novel just hints certain information for the readers to interpret.

It is true that this book may be dull to some people. However, what attracts me to continue reading the book is the suspense, and how the male and female lead handle certain issue. They are both level headed and smart characters. I have to agree with the other reviewers that this novel is very realistic since I personally agree with most of the mindset of the male and female lead. I think it shows a very mature way of thinking and handling matters which actually taught me certain mindsets.

The romance of the female and male leads are rather different from other books to be honest. The romance shows more of a trust relationship amongst them and not a perspective of one or both being blinded with each other. It teaches me that love may not be only that both are being blindly in love with each other but it can also be in a case where both trusts each other as life partners. In the novel, it is clearly evident that both of them trust each other in their decisions and their mindset on how to handle certain things.

In conclusion, it was a pleasant read. I have to thank the translators for translating the novel really well and the author for making such a fantastic novel. I have to also thank the comment section in the translations as that really helped me to clear some doubts regarding the interpretations. I have not read TBAVW so I am not sure whether they are similar but I will read that for sure.

I would really recommend this novel for someone who enjoys reading and learning about “politics” and I would not recommend this book if one is looking for a very romantic novel. <<less

Eh... how should I say this. To be completely honest, I enjoyed the story a lot with the title having something to do with the story. However, like one of the reviewers said, the dialogues in this story between the 2 main characters didn't really have much chemistry. I understand that once you get the other peson's character you wouldn't need to say much unnecessary words once your together but, the dialogues between them had a shallow feeling in it every single time. True, HXW and YJQ are much... more>> more chatty than QQJ & HH but they didn't really touch on the subject about their relationship or what they really are like because the author chose to explain it rather than them characters. Though this really is like TBVW 2.0 I prefer TBVW than this because it mostly focused on the people around them rather than the characters. Idk, maybe its just me who wants more romance time for these 2.

I like the laziness of the MC and wolf in sheep clothing ml, but I'd rather see how their relationship in life progress rather than them talking about other people, scheming, making promises when you know the other person doesn't trust you and just letting it be, etc. TBVW showed how hard HH tried so hard to become the perfect husband and emperor while the ML here showed that trust between each other is enough to make you last but doesn't explicitly tells us how love between the characters really happened.

What I really like is that

Spoiler

even though the MC is the Queen of Laziness, she and QQJ has the same character trait. Or should I say belief in themselves? Love yourself more than the others or else once you love someone and isn't reciprocated, the only path is for you to go mad. Both women may seem harmless but once touched, would eat you whole without realizing it. They are also not the vengeful type and always leave the person that hates them the most a chance. Both know that the era they live in is where women are just tools for men to rule the world so why bother going so far as to hurt one self? Only difference between them is that HXW had everything whereas, QQJ lost everything and is only left by herself which made it more enjoyable how she got to her path of success. Meanwhile HXW seems a bit plain since she already had everything and didn't need to do anything.

[collapse]

What I dislike is:

Spoiler

Did I mention that the ML of TBVW is much better than ETT? In ETT, the ML, like the FL of ETT had everything except for a perfect family unlike HH who has a loving mother and sister but both share the same fate of having a s*um dad who favored a concubine more than the wife. In the story although YJQ didn't hate HXW, he didn't really LOVE her to the extent of being obsessed with her. He just knows that since HXW knows him much better than anyone that he ACCEPTED her and somehow turned to shallow love in my pov. He wasn't as hardworking as HH on being a husband.

The other thing I dislike was that everything in the story was meant for the main characters to see the downfall and rising of each characters. Mentioning more about them than the characters. Sure its great to have a bit more pov but it was more focused on a certain person on how great or dislikeable someone is.

[collapse]

All in all, this a good slow read for those who needs a break from xianxia and wuxia genres full of vengeful MC. The story has a lot of morals for girls on the path of love and for those people with many ambitions. Though more bloodier than TBVW but its fine. <<less

Also, oscar winning acting.

I am happy that this is not dragging but I also wish it was dragged a bit. Seriously, their love is so amazing

I can't believe this story finally ended! After reading How to be a Virtuous Wife, I was looking for a novel similar to that and found this one, Eight Treasures Trousseau! Since both of the novels are similar, I can't help but compare them. In terms of relationship development, I prefer Virtuous Wife since there were more scenes/moments between the MC and ML while in Eight Treasures the relationship development was vague and not really explained well. It just seemed like MC and ML were strangers like friends with benefits... more>> then -bam- both of them somehow crossed the gulf of trust and became a real couple? Anyways, the process of becoming a couple/romance aspect was vague compared to Virtuous Wife where the ML had more POV moments to express his thoughts/actions. When it comes to character development, there is really none since the MC and ML basically maintained their own frame of personality throughout the whole story, which isn't a bad thing in this novel and I liked their characters. Both Virtuous Wife and Eight Treasures follow the storyline of : 1. Arranged marriage 2. Horrible family or caring family being sorted out 3. Palace intrigue/scheming 4. Fighting against other royal/noble females 5. Third wheels bashing the party 6. Assassins of some sort or coup d'état 7. ML becomes emperor and MC becomes empress. Overall, I am satisfied with the story since I was expecting it to follow a similar troupe in Virtuous Wife which was exactly what happened. Being a semi-picky reader, there are aspects of the story that I would have liked the author to expand on or follow up with, but I really did enjoy this read. Really recommend readers who liked reading Virtuous Wife to give this novel a try! :) <<less

This is so long and dry. I tried to keep reading but could only get to chapter 13 before giving up. It's a flat story and the characters don't have any liveliness to them. It's like trying to awkwardly kill time with someone who is cold and boring in an elevator that's stuck. EDIT: 3 stars

OK so I came back to it and read to the end. It does get better around the 30 chapter mark, and for you romantics, the good lines start at chapter 45. There are large plot holes, unresolved "mysteries, " and a lack of event sequence explanations.
Spoiler

ie: Were are the FML network of spies from?

MML goes to the palace and bam he became king. We assume there's a trap in the palace and he somehow manages to be victorious?

BUT if you're just here for the romance it'll still work for you. The romance is sweet with a true to heart male lead and a tough and smart (in the mouth) female lead. The main draw for me and what kept me reading, were the side characters. They had more dimension and interest than the main leads. My favorite was Yi Lu (?) the eldest sister.
Spoiler

It's too bad author gave all the major non servant female characters bad endings.

[collapse]

Do NOT recommend this as a first CN novel as there are a lot of names and each character can have multiple titles that vary depending on the situation and the addressee. If you still want to try make sure to take notes of the names clearly.

Loved this novel. Badass female MC is always my favorite, and XiWan is amazing. She's smart and strong, but her laziness means she won't get off her bu*t until she feels like it's necessary. Despite her laziness, she can be super passionate, and I love the contrast.

It really is similar to To Be A Virtuous Wife but I like 8TT better.

The pace is good and the air and undertone can change easily from calm to serious.

I like how the MC is damn lazy and has the 'calamitous beauty'. At least, she is not that s*upid. The thing that I don't like about her is that she has no interest in life and that made story kind of boring.

Is there a romance? I do not feel it. Even the tag 'Male lead falls in love first' doesn't show. He just said that his wife is a rare beauty.

Overall, you can read... more>> this if you have leisure time. Good for burning time and have nothing to do. <<less

The Female MC is not those dumb dumb naive child, but someone who is lazy but smart (which is sooo my kind of ppl). She has a good family support and her husband is a hidden evil but treats her very well~ so even if he is not "in love" with her, at least he only have her as his one and only wife~

plus, she is a good actress who deserves an oscar~ :D

So I've been reading this novel from the start, I thought that it was a bit similar to the novel "To Be A Virtuous Wife", that is why I started reading it. if you can compare the two there is only a small similarity and everything else is different.

REVIEW

I would grade it as a 3.75 stars and the reasons as follows:

  1. It IS a mainstream story/plot that revolves around the fight for the throne (we all know what the ending is just based from how the story progressed), there is nothing new on the story like the underhanded manipulation of people, information, assassination plot, beautiful couple, smart/cunning protagonist and so on~
  2. the story is very mellow, nothing to great happens. Most information are "locked", and we don't know how that happens (which is fine because this is not a crime/mystery novel, where you would need details..), in the end we mostly only see the results of the actions taken. which makes it less dramatic/exciting for some readers. And the author keep us hanging on the male lead intentions most of the time.
  3. the male lead is..... okay, he's not that too great, but plus points on being two-faced? (I'm not sure on the relationship between the MC but, it a slow romance), shrewd, caring, and shows proprietary to the female lead (I really hate it when male lead's are irresponsible, disrespectful and just bad character TO the MC at the beginning because I think that it's very disappointing if the male lead started to judge using rumors or hersays and then flipping actions after they see the female lead's true face), in short I do not forgive and forget easily...-_-.
  4. the female lead is a alright, but she is still missing that punch trait that would make her stand out among other historical heroines. she has live a better life that is maybe why there was no motive to actually bring out her punch trait (maybe except from a time or two: acting). I know it is common to act in ancient times (based on other novels) but it's rare to see an MC that just lacks that motivation.... but I like that she is both realistic without acting too conservative, she knows that feelings are usually not reciprocated and she does not care about it much, she just... you know living/enjoying life, which is fine as well.
  5. this story is good to read on times where you just want to be lazy or during rainy times, because it has that feeling of nostalgia, it is not a story that is too hard or too soft but just the right amount of intrigue and happy times. the writing of the story was well-made and thought out.
