Roan ran away 20 years ago from his rural village in the aim of becoming a Great General. However, all he got 20 years later was just a handful of money and the lowly position of squad commander of the First Legion’s.

In the end, he became a cold corpse in the battlefield… but somehow, he came back in the past.

“Alright. This time, I won’t become a Great General but a Monarch.”

His previous life’s aim was becoming a Great General, but, he only became a spearman squad commander.

This time, his life’s aim is becoming the Monarch.

“Then I guess I’d become at least a General, right?”

Roan, who remembers 20 years of his future, now starts his unstoppable march.

A decent novel.

The MC is clever and little bit of a muscle head at times. A few plots and schemes will make you enjoy this novel.

It seems in later chapters the author runs out ideas and extends the details of every battle as a result.

Not the best novel but worth a read if you have nothing better to do.

So far this is the best reincarnated/reborn/time slip novel that i've ever read, there is nothing that I dislike about the MC, he properly use his future knowledge and actually train eventhough he got many OP artifact, he never waste time and always focus on his objective.

Every companion he got have character development and unique in certain way, he is surely strong individually but not one man army like most OP MC, he is not very smart or cunning but have the abilities to make people follow him, this is... more>> the best, most MC of kingdom management either muscle brain or weak ass cunning con man that only use deceive and ploy but MC can utilize both but still never drunk in power.

MC is someone can I actually root for, caring for his comrade while not showing mercy to done wrong to him. He do whatever he can to prosper his troops and people. The politic and tactic is really light and easy to understanding not like many novel on the same genre trying so hard to be complicated and seem inteligent but this manga deliver it much more simpler and summed up.

Up until this point the worthy enemy havent show up, so far only monster and stuck up noble who trying to messed with him but sooner or later someone who can actually recognize his prowess and challenge him will appear and I cant wait for it.

I know romance is not the main point but everytime there is a scene about it I pumped up, lol

Its good read, I hope it got updated fast since when I write this it havent been updated for 2 months <<less

No avid reader of military and kingdom-building stories can deny that I am the Monarch is a pretty good read to enjoy.

Set in a world of fantasy, where magic exists and monsters from fairy tales such as orcs and fairies are common sense, I am the Monarch centers around a young man named Roan who had been killed in his past life as a spearman in an elite troop, having only dreamt then to become a general of an army. Earning the opportunity to renew his ambitions, he embarks in... more>> his new life to become a ruler of a kingdom, so that he may at least die as a general.

The story may be simplistic in a sense, employing grimacing onomatopoeia in imagery and rehashing lines that make the personalities of the characters, including the protagonist, similar and hollow. However, it delivers the prodigious struggle of a young man who aspire to be an ultimate figure in history as he climbs up the social hierarchy, enlisting in his ranks talented men from his past life and even new ones who've been kept in the shadow by fate. Indeed the storyline itself is generic among reincarnation fantasy stories, its uniqueness comes from the perseverance of the author to push the story to work on its plot, making the tale as if it were alive.

Overall, it rates 4 stars. I'm quite thrifty in my evaluation, especially to novels that deserve keen insights and criticism. If it only had diverse characteristics for the characters, with their unique speech and just a decent introduction to their background, no doubt this novel could've easily placed itself among the Top 10 in Novel Updates. <<less

Okay, so this is a regressor kind of story where the MC dies and goes back to an earlier point in his life and turns OP because he knows the future.

Some people complain that there isn't any tension because the MC is too OP and also knows the future. I think this is a s*upid complaint because 99% of these types of stories are like this.

My favorite thing about the novel is that, very often, the author will actually do some neat things to subvert expectations or do things that... more>> you don't quite expect. There are also a lot of cool and badass sh*t that happens here and there as well. The story also has great pacing. It never feels like it is wasting your time. The story is also really good with setting up stuff in advanced so most things never come out of nowhere and you don't get the impression that the author is pulling random ideas out of his ass like in many of the (bad) CN novels.

Personally, I think the weakest aspects are the battles. Don't know if it is the writing or the translations but it is quite difficult for me to totally visualize what's happening a lot of the times. Battles are generally kinda pointless anyway. After a while, I tended to skim the battles to get to the good stuff faster.

Anyway, this is one of the better regression novels I've read. Starts off a little slow but I'd encourage anyone to give this a try. You just have to understand that the MC being s*upidly OP is part of the genre. <<less

So this story is about a man who tries to fight for the people of his land rather than for his own riches. He starts off as a soldier, who has transmigrated from the future, and works to use his knowledge of the future to prevent the deaths of civilians while trying to allow for civilians to have a carefree life. His journey is a long one, accompanied by many adjutants and advisors who help him. Overall, I found this story a refreshing pace, and with a lot of turns... more>> and twists that you may not expect. Sadly it has been about a year since any updates, so I have resorted to reading machine-translated (Google Translate) raws, which I found by searching the novel's Korean name, "나는 군주다". A basic summary of what happens in the final chapters that are not yet translated:

Spoiler

Chapter 335 - Seems to be the same as translated chapter 334.

Chapter 336 - Beldrica ("Holy" Emperor) allies with Moyce Ron Estia (7th Prince), playing into Roan's hands.

In addition, Kalian tells the other dragons about why the seal broke, and tells them that Roan has access to Europas's lair. He also tells them he is requesting the help of the underworld (land of the dwarves) to try and reduce the casualties from the gate opening.

Chapter 337 - Starts off with the Byron kingdom's capital in chaos because the Pershion empire is making a rapid advance in their territory because all their forces are trying to attack Amaranth. However, the Man*s is leading the Pershion forces because the Black Legion is about to surface in the area according to Roan. Soon the Black Legion shows up, and Man*s leads his forces to attack them.

The nations on the continent realize their mistake as the Black Legion starts to ravage their countries, and try to recall their forces, only for news that the Amaranth Kingdom, Pershion Kingdom, Istel Kingdom, and Light Kingdom (Elves?) are fighting the Black Legion in enemy countries and providing food to the citizens unlike the kingdoms themselves.

The final mention in this chapter is that the Pincos (demons that escaped in chapter 331) were starting to climb down the Grain Mountains.

Chapter 338 - Starts off with the battle between the Lucia Empire and the Holy Legion, Beldrica pulls backs his forces and meets with Crew as a "favor", who then in correspondence with Moyce Ron Estia attacks the rear of the Holy Legion, causing chaos. Beldrica then learns that Roan is behind this plot, and is angered. At this timing, the Pincos arrive.

Chapter 339 - Starts off with Ian needing to make a snap decision to split the forces a bit to ensure the defense of Amaranth, only to have another report of "monsters" appearing at Poskein Lake. Ian plans to have the capital forces move out to subjugate the monsters, but then Kinis shows up and explains that the forces are on Amaranth's side and are mermaids.

Then it returns to the battle between the Lucia Empire and the Holy Legion, where the Pincos are wrecking havoc, it is learned that Beldrica, the cardinals, and the archbishops all abandoned the Holy Legion and went back to the Holy Palace. Then the demons start attacking the Holy Palace, so the Amaranth allies move to save the citizens. However, suddenly a young man appears and annihilates all the demons singlehandedly. The Holy Legion mistakes the young man for Devesis, but the young man is Roan.

Chapter 340 - Roan starts off by comforting the seventh prince's Estian forces, which leads to them becoming enthralled with Roan. The Holy Legion can't be bothered to attack the Roan, the leader of the enemy army as he had saved the Holy Palace, and because of the holy aura that Roan gave off. Roan and Io have a heartful reunion, Roan has to leave in the middle, but he brings with him to the Holy Palace the Holy Legion in a single teleportation.

Beldrica, the cardinals and the archbishops discuss how without them, there is no Holy Palace, so as long as they are safe, they can rebuild the Holy Palace and defeat the demons once the Holy Legion returns. Roan then appears saying that he is the lord of this place, which for him, "this place" was Middle earth and the world.

Chapter 341 - Roan confronts Beldrica, who states that the Paladins, Holy Legion soldiers and general priests don't mean much, it's him, the cardinals and the archbishops that matter. He reasons this because as long as they are alive, they can replenish the Holy Legion and priests as much as they want. Roan then reveals the Holy Legion has been in the room for quite some time and overheard the discussion. They are angered by what they heard, and Beldrica comments that Roan cannot kill him, as how will he win the hearts of the people on the continent if he is killed. Roan then sends the Paladins and Holy Legion away. Roan then proceeds to eliminate the Holy Palace castle is completely annihilated, leaving just the pedestal that Beldrica was sitting on, Roan then proceeds to leave, just as the Pincos arrive. Roan then commands them to kneel down using Flamdor's aura. Then Roan lets them run havoc on the Holy Palace, leading to Beldrica's demise. The news then spreads that Roan saved the Holy Legion and established a new sanctuary, which reassures the people of the continent after the Holy Palace fell.

Chapter 342 - Lunark is celebrating the cleansing of the world, whilst Golan (Gale?) is fighting a dark elf. Lunark prepares to wipe out the Pershion and Istel Kingdom forces, when the dragons who were guarding the gate of boundary show up and prevent their annihilation. The guardian dragons confront Lunark who proceeds to ask them to thank him because he is going to kill the Demon King, ending the demon conflict once the world has been cleansed. A hole opens up in the middle of the battlefield as Lunark is pondering why the momentum is not in his favor, out of which swarm the dwarves who cover the Black Legion.

Chapter 343 - Cardor, a top-level demon, meets with Latios, who requests the annihilation of middle earth. Cardor laughs and agrees, since that was his goal in the first place. Then Roan teleports in and punches Cardor, who flies to the side. Latios loathes that Roan seems to be ruining his plans again. Cardor proceeds to realize that Roan has the scent of multiple entities, one of which is a seemingly familiar demon. Roan answers Cardor's question that it is the scent of Flamdor. Cardor learns Roan is the only one that knows, and becomes confident that he can defeat Roan. Roan then proceeds to stop Cardor's fist and proceeds to one sidedly fight Cardor, not letting Cardor have a chance to recover. Roan also tells Latios to stay where he is, because once he is done with Cardor, Latios is next.

Chapter 344 - Begins with some exposition about why the dwarves disappeared because the dragons constantly kidnapped and imprisoned artisans. Lunark asks how Kalian managed to enlist their help, and Kalian responds he simply apologized. The dwarves and dragons proceed to try and strike Lunark down.

Story then cuts to Roan taking revenge for Flamdor on Cardor. Roan then provides exposition detailing that Travias joined up with Flamdor to fight againt the top level demons previously, but when they achieved victory, god Devesis and several dragons separated Travias, which led to Roan to gaining the powers of both later on. Roan then proceeds to kill Cardor. He starts to walk towards Latios, but feels a sensation that leads him to grab Latios and teleport to a familiar battleground.

Chapter 345 - Most of the crown prince of Estia's forces deserted because of the rumours that Roan's news was true, and as they fight the Black Legion, Moyce appears as the emperor with the emperor troops, causing the crown prince to be confused. Turns out Moyce is now the emperor of the Estian Empire. He was appointed due to a situation Roan caused, and since all the other princes were attacking Amaranth, only Moyce was available to be appointed as emperor. Moyce then using the underworld, led troops to war againt the Black Legion, Tallion Church and the demons.

Chapter 346 - The nations started to realize the Amaranth Kingdom was trying to fight against the real enemies, after the Amaranth Kingdom armies abandoned their posts and attacked the Black Legion instead of trying to continue the conflict. The Aimas Allied Powers proceed to splinter, which causes the Tallian Bridge to fall. It also is mentioned that Aily's mother was the previous Picsis of the elves, which is why she is subjugating the dark elves.

Next, it proceeds to where a dark pillar of light was appearing, the same place Roan teleported to, where Demon Lord Lucifer shows up. Demon Lord Lucifer proceeds to attack Lunark, and cuts off his wings, and fights the other dragons, removing a wing of another dragon before Roan shows up and attempts to stab Demon Lord Lucifer. He introduces himself as the lord of middle earth.

Chapter 347 - Roan hands Latios to the dragons, who is scrutinized as he was the cause of middle-earth's near collapse. Demon Lord Lucifer attempts to cut off Roan's arm, only for Roan to cut off Demon Lord Lucifer's arm instead. Demon Lord Lucifers proceeds to summon and consume demons to increase his power. Meanwhile the dragons proceed to annihilate Lunark while Demon Lord Lucifer is occupied. The only remains of Lunark that exist are his two wings.

Chapter 348 - Roan has been fighting Demon Lord Lucifer and having Demon Lord Lucifer summon demons to him so that the demons on the continent could be more easily controlled. Demon Lord Lucifer has ran through most of the demons and now summons some higher-level demons who unwillingly become sacrifices. Roan reveals that it is now Demon Lord Lucifer's turn to die, which Demon Lord Lucifer socffs at since as Crea's child, he is unable to be killed. However, Roan brings out the Tempestas, made of Astrum, the only thing that can kill the children of Crea. Demon Lord Lucifer still is nonchalant, as only those with divine power can use the God's Metal, Astrum, and Roan has been hiding the scent of his divine power during this confrontation. Tempestas is revealed to have been developed to leave the fate of Middle earth to the residents of Middle earth, the Astrum was given as a gift to the dragons, and Europas used it to make Tempestas. The gods and dragons had been anxious that humans' greed would destroy middle-earth. The first owner of Tempestas, Latios nearly destroyed the world, the second owner, Pierce made a decision that led to Roan, the current owner using it to kill Demon Lord Lucifer. Demon Lord Lucifer is dead now, and as such the world celebrated the lord of middle earth.

The wings of Lunark and the Tempestas were used to reseal the gate of boundary. Latios is sent to the demon realm. Roan then proceeds to clean out the remnants of the Holy Empire and Demon Realm.

There is then a scene of children play fighting with one of them playing the role of Roan who is correct on Roan's use of a spear and not a sword. They then chance upon some remnants of the Demon Realm, who goad the children, just as Roan appears, who then proceeds to slaughter the demons. The children ask who he is, to which he chokes, as he can finally say it, "I am the monarch".

. Some might claim that our MC monopolized all the talents in the kingdom but even if then there should be at least one opponent who uses his brains properly. It was heavily emphasized that our MC is a veteran who roamed the battlefield for 20years, but there should be other generals who participated in more battles than him, but no, the author doesn't recognize them. To put it bluntly the author seems to say 'our MC is op and rest of all are bird shit'. <<less

Honestly speaking, all reincarnation novels r generally enjoyable, at least for me. The problem with this book is that for one the genre is pretty niche. Thank God it is not historical genre, which I thought was originally going to be, but I has fantasy, like goblins, and magic (though yet to be seemed but mentioned). A pure military genre is pretty niche and not for me. The second problem was that the story gets pretty dull after first few chapters due to repetiveness of the military scene and char... more>> actions. At First I thought this novel is fine, at first 100 chapter it still fun to read, although the translation is suck because they memeing the characters conversation with some random f*cking gay things, and some sfx or whatever that f*cking 'Flaaaaaaame' thing really annoying.

After 100+ chapters the story become boring, and After 170 chapters more of the story had become ridiculous and dumb, a lot of nonsense things had happened.

The story really focused on MC ONLY the other characters have no development and just worshiping MC like a god.

I... more>> dropped after 176 chapters, I can't bear any longer, there still a lot of things that make the story boring but I will just write this much,

I was out of good novels to read, and thankfully I finally found this gem.

Definetely worth a read, for those who like :

  • Returning to the past - Reincarnation novels.
  • OP MC (But not s*upidly OP which makes the story bland.) There are certainly moments MC could loose his life.
  • Kingdom building. MC becomes a monarch from a commoner while going through hardships and tribulations.
What I didnt like :

  • While approaching the ending, the novel becomes very fast paced. (Like many other novels)
  • The romance. While the romance wasnt bad, it was almost non-existent in the novel. Among 340 chapters maybe we have 5-10 chapters which we see our MC together with his girl in a single chapters. In other words, the romance was very lacking. I think since you want to place romance in the novel, you should put some more focus on it, or else dont put romance at all. Idk.
  • Also, why exactly arent the last 10 chapters translated? Thank you
Anyway I rate this 4 stars, if not for the fast paced ending I would rate it 5.

So much excitement!

MC is too much OP and kind that it's so unreal sometimes and good things kept coming to him like without much hindrance.

I still rated it at 5/5 since I like this kind of plot a bit.

Not the best Korean webnovel around but it is pretty good. I like how the novel emphasizes more on strategies to win a lot of the wars and MC's reliance on his friends/mates to achieve his objectives. There is a question about how MC was somehow able to rise to the top despite starting off as an ordinary spearman but there is actually a story to it late into the novel. Overall, would rate this novel 3.8/5 if possible.

Reading like 10 chapter and it already really bad, no strategy at all. MC come in said there an ambush, not even gonna double check. Instead prepare for battle even though the ambush was not near them and they should have plan to prepare counter attack. Talk about using fire against enemy then, use cavalry to attract enemy for full on confrontation. The author at least should use bowmen to number down the enemy a bit, but there actually no battle formation to speak of. Troop leader actually need to... more>> protect the newbie and 99% of newbie are coward. If it was realistic they would have been kill for not listen to command. (It medieval time most newbie are cannon fodder only those who survive become veteran). In battle author only talk about personal fight not the whole battlefield, this would be okay for other novel genre, but for army building novel, it mean that author are not talented in that genre at all. In the next part where kid parent got kidnap (mind you it medieval time) kid act so clueless and ask for help like modern kid ask for help with their homework. No crying, no begging, no kid who would do anything to get help at all. Ranking in it military is also mass up. Soldier should only report to their leader and the leader will relay it forward, but no they afraid of corruption. Dude it medieval military. Leader needed to reward their men for good work or they just left to join other team. Soldier follow their leader because either the leader is respected (have good reputation) or if the leader is kind toward there men (Don't send them to their death or reward them more than other). But just because MC bring idea of fighting enemy. The commander just prepare for battle even though the enemy is 2000, and Commander only has 800 men with him. There and option of not fighting and take detour but no we have MC plot armor so we fight.

It one those Korean novel where NMC are mostly dumb, and there will be one rival or someone you need to surpass. Some character seen MC potential and stick with MC like minon. Focus to much on personal feeling of each individual. NMC all coward. MC can solve easy problem and be call genius. Do the good guy act and everyone agree 100% even though it mean they have to fight blooding battle. It not a game where you have HP and it can regen, It a live or dead battle no good leader send their men to die if the chance of win is only 60%. No political move or anything leader like. It almost feel like reading a novel about hero, not kingdom building where personal feeling almost mean shit. At least it didn't talk about friendship power. But still hated it when the "oppa" stuff came up. Most people down mind but I read like 5-6 Korean novel and I feel sick of reading that when the situation is something serious. Like the parent of the children got kidnap and children use those oppa, and huang stuff to ask for help just doesn't feel right. Maybe it normal for Korean but translator please don't put that it serious situation like that. I don't mind if it were comedy, romance, or other novel, but in Aristocracy genre that will rune the novel. MC don't respect other only his rival. If someone act good toward MC it away feel like they are curry favor with MC and not like just being a good person. If someone try to do that then that person will become an annoying one. I'm not just hating Korean novel because of this but when similar idea of moral and type of person which only make sense in Korea being use in this type of story where it take place in another universe or other places then Korea it just feel like they trying to make us feel that being like that is normal, where it only normal in Korean. I seen this flaw in all Korean novel I read. Anyway it feel like I just complaining so let end it here. <<less

It's good. If I had to simply sum it up, it's pleasant read to spend some time on it, I wouldn't call it a literary masterpiece or anything of the sorts, but If you are searching for a novel to read amidst this quarantine it is great.

As everyone has already mentioned, I do have some faults with the story as both the travelling back to time showed very little ramifications on the present, and certain instances where he "borrowed" past decisions and tactics from others on the wing while... more>> being a mere spearmen in the past.

That being said I still give it 5 stars because it is just fun, after all some people just want to read a simple novel with a simple MC that mows down everything inn his path. Straightforward novel. <<less

It's pretty okay if you have nothing else to read, you won't even be bothered with the obvious flaws, if you don't overthink everything such as:

- crossing around the country in a matter of seconds.

- Cavalries and Infantries moving at the same pace.

... more>> - Weapons suddenly appearing.

- The things that supposed to happen within 20 yrs happened within just a decade or less.

- The MC and his army is the only one that fights. Seriously, a whole country goes to war with monsters and a couple of other Kingdoms yet the battlefield is always at the same place.

The novel is still pretty entertaining even with these flaws. If it wasn't for the non stop wars and battles at around chapter 190+ I'll probably won't drop this. <<less

Here to answer One Simple Question: Is it Shit?

Absolutely NOT!

However I find it boring.

... more>> The story tries to present a life of a reborn Military-man, who instead of being a Spearman decides to become a Monarch.

He knows the events from the past and even if there is a butterfly effect he can still expect that the same events will happen but at a different time.

In this story he is the only "Intelligent one" while everyone praises his "knowledge" when in previous life he supposedly couldn't break trough even the lowest ranks.

Magically everything goes according to his will, he collects all the greatest treasures and makes friends with all of the top characters INSTANTLY.

Uhm, all of the reviewers have a point; just read their reviews. This novel is mediocre at best. The ending kinda feels anticlimactic. The romance? Uhm, romance?

In summary, this novel felt like rushing the story to a good end; an end that the author wants. It lacks many important parts and details.

Spoiler

The MC becomes a god and super OP, which is fine but it makes everything irrelevant.
