Roan ran away 20 years ago from his rural village in the aim of becoming a Great General. However, all he got 20 years later was just a handful of money and the lowly position of squad commander of the First Legion’s.

In the end, he became a cold corpse in the battlefield… but somehow, he came back in the past.

“Alright. This time, I won’t become a Great General but a Monarch.”

His previous life’s aim was becoming a Great General, but, he only became a spearman squad commander.

This time, his life’s aim is becoming the Monarch.

“Then I guess I’d become at least a General, right?”

Roan, who remembers 20 years of his future, now starts his unstoppable march.

I think this is a very exciting story, but I also think MC is a hypocrite sometimes. Like

Spoiler

He attacks the poskein lake and gets angry the native animal sethis attack shis soldiers?! Dude if u attack and aim to annihilate the natives inhabitants in their native habitat of course they will kill ur soldiers. Yet he gets angry?! Like, yeah be sad bc ur comrades died but dont hate the animal. It should be expected is quite natural. He's too biased.

I have very complex feelings regarding this series, but the objective outcome is that this series is Mango approved.

The following spoiler tag contains my opinions which don't effect the ratings of the story, but are rather regarding the translation.

Spoiler

Holy Moly! The translation is so inconsistent that I literally wanted to scream my brains out at one point! Make no mistake, I respect the time and efforts put by the team, but my experience of this novel was severely degraded by some pathetic mistakes. Overall, the translation is quite good. But in some clusters which are far too often present especially in the first 150 chapters and significant number of chapters after that as well, the most childish and amateurish translations are present. From the usage of words like 'amazingly' some 20 times in a chapter to the protagonist literally r*ping his lower lips with his teeth. Not to mention, the 'you b*stard thing insult.' Thankfully, towards the later half, the quality is better but this lack of quality must definitely be responsible for at least 20% of the negative reviews from people. Make no mistake, this translation is definitely high quality when compared to an mtl, but it is more frustrating to read due to the sudden and severe polars. And there is the poor hosting website as well, which takes eons to load on wifi. Eitherway, this is a rant which is not part of the review o the grading.

[collapse]

Firstly, this novel starts off very sluggishly raising many questions which are answered much later. The protagonist is pretty much an empty character, tbh. He has some aim regarding what a monarch should be, but no reasoning as to why he wants to be that. The skills which he develops, while due to his hardwork, are also excessively due to his cheats. This makes it hard to get behind him. Luckily, the side characters actually form a tight structure which ensure that they stay relevant and have some organic growth, which is a huge strength of this novel.

The protagonist, during the later parts of the series, gets incomprehensible strength upgrades which ruin the immersion of the reader. The female lead, who is a fairly interesting character, gets far too less screen presence. In addition, the major antagonists of the world (not of the continuing plot, but of the world itself) have such shoddily childish 'pure evil' reasoning behind what they do that it simply feels like a CG fightfest towards the end. This is the reason why this series gets a 4/5.

Make no mistake, this definitely has some huge positives! The strategy based battles are a delight, even when they are rushed. The development of the side characters, and the gradual change of some of them into antagonists, is a pure delight! The combat is not a major plus of this series, but it is not given too much importance as well. And even though the antagonists have very little dimensions, they are intelligent with their schemes and cheats.

So, read it for the wonderful cast of characters and the insane large-scale battles. If you are lucky, you might end up liking the idealistic protagonist who has no proper reason for his ideals. Mind you, there is some time travel in addition to second chance present in this novel, so at some point of time, plot holes and foreshadowings are nicely patched up.

A clean series worth 4/5 stars, and Mango approved. <<less

Its truly a shame seeing how a novel full of potential became so dull after 200+ chapters. During the first few arcs, it showed both creative plot and great execution along with a near-perfect translation. However, like most novels from similar genres, it quickly becomes cliche and boring. I would still recommend this for the fans of the reincarnated, weak-to-strong genres, but unfortunately, I'm gonna have to drop this at chapter 227.

Pretty good not the best but nice kingdom building. Lots of lucky coincidences that aren't very believable with the military tactics.

I started reading this in 2017. At that time it looked like for me as the good piece of work with logical plot and clever protagonist. Of coz, not without loopholes but. His enemies weren't clowns like in Chinese novels and he wasn't too OP as them. However, all of you know every good thing shall come to the end.

Spoiler

The end of this story began at the Ark of Simon, when our Protag started to turn from quick-witted but non-knowledgeable person when it comes to the strategy to the person who is more cunning and shrewd than Ian Philipps whom the author had described as one of the greatest mind of the World. Simon from pragmatic and a little bit cruel character changed into complete idiot. When I was reading it I still believed that the story wouldn't be like it was in the tonns of Xianxia, Wuxia etc. How naive I was.

ML always took the best things. He was praised as the great man; his nature spirit is the most powerful one. Blah-blah. Additionally, it was revealed that he is living his 3rd life.

It seemed that in the 1st life he was the Emperor who had ruled over the World and achieved greatness by himself. In the 2nd life as the consequence of his enemy's plot he and his comrades, friends in previous life died miserably. He himself died early as the soldier.

As the things escalated he met Kalian, took from him the heritage ofthe most powerful Dragon and was blessed. Both the Son of the God (Philius, for us knows as Travias) and the Demon (yeah-yeah, Flamdor wasn't mage but Demon) gave him their powers and memories. After this, he cnahged into so much OP that he defeated the King of the hell who was the strongest. Just in two or three chapters!!!I had more problem than him when killed my first c*ckroach with slippers. And one chapter ahead it was the epilogue O_O.

But the most irritating thing is

[collapse]
all of the events I mentioned prior happened just in the last 20-30 chapters. So if you ask what we have in the ending? The OP ML who knows everything much better than his subordinates, he is like the incarnation of the "Mister who was engineer, doctor, astronaut, scientist etc". Also, we have the rushed ending without normal descriptions (not the two or three lines like it is) what happened to the other friendly characters after. And this is the reason why I rate this story only 3 stars. <<less

I paused/dropped this series. The plot develops too fast and seems rushed in the later half. Hence, it falls into old patterns of the genre which can be a little boring.

4/5

Old:

Enjoyable piece. Sometimes the... credulity? of the main character's thought process is somewhat hard to bear, but he is a well-built character, and I like his uncompromising spirit.

An unexpected source of comedy and quite entertaining. 5/5 for now.

PS: A very well done translation that only seems to be getting better every chapter.

Probably the best "second chance" novel I've read. Can be a bit melodramatic at times, and Roan is a bit too perfect of a messiah, but those are easily forgiven when compared to the rest of the story. I don't mind that he's only really skilled in battle, knowing how to rely on his subordinates and delegate tasks is exactly what a leader should do anyway.

Biggest flaw? Translation is a bit shoddy with grammatical errors in almost every chapter, badly needs editing.

The best novel i've ever read. It's so good it'll make you want more of it.

The story basically the same old coming back to teenager with all experience intact. Roan, the MC starts all over again from a veteran soldiers to a single soldiers that couldn't wield spear without calluses spread from his hand. The starts wasn't that interesting though it will become a foundation of the story. Like every other MC, roan got a thick plot armor (of course, if he doesn't have that then he's not MC lol).... more>> But the interesting part was the story the author develop from a soldier to a noble with political interest to serve the people not the king. The complex of the story was revealed to us one by one. It's like you got a fine multiple course of meal from the best chef with the one you love. A fine candle like dinner.

Please by all means read it and enjoy~ <<less

I recommend that one.

Pro

    • Great main character, actually using his head when he has a second chance. He's a good guy at heart, and becomes really admirable in later parts of the story.
    • All characters are developed.
    • There is world building, as many things unfold as the story passes.
Con

    • The romance is not bad, but I'm not a fan of love at first sight, as it takes the fun in the relation. Especially here as the main female MC is interesting.

A novel that started out really good, but got the bittersweet treatment for the ending.

I will list out the following pros and cons I felt after completely reading this.

PROS

    • An MC who is kind-hearted towards others, but becomes a cold-blooded killer during war. He is also rational and admits his own shortcomings and does not hesitate to ask help from others.
    • MC and his subordinates have strong camaraderie. They don't hesitate and is always ready to help one another. They also play a significant role in the story.
    • Strategic planning is heavily emphasized here. It's simply not rushing towards the enemies with one strength, but each and every character's role is important here.
    • A strong and well-likeable FL.
    • World building is really good.
    • The powerful weapons and mana techniques which MC obtains have their own identity and long history and the reason why they exist in the first place, though Author left some plot holes regarding the mana technique.
    • Plot twists after plot twists when novel is nearing its ending.
CONS

    • Author didn't give much character interaction for the FL. She could have been utilized better.
    • Cringey writing from the Author (that includes the romance between MC and FL). It's like we are watching some soap opera with cringey dialogues.
    • Plot armor is used almost extensively here and it's just terrible.
    • Rushed ending with some plot holes left by the Author. There are some events which happened so suddenly in the story which I thought, would get a explanation, but that didn't happen.
    • Author introduced so many cool characters, but they never got the spotlight they deserved. That includes the FL too. For example, one of the characters after training, appeared as a big steel muscle warrior which not even the arrows can pierce through him, and guess what? He only appeared in 2 chapters after that. 2 CHAPTERS!!. I just don't understand what the Author was smoking not giving him any other roles.
    • Spoiler

For the first half of the novel, it is primarily about MC becoming the monarch. Towards the 2nd half, it's about demons, dragons, devils and whatnot. The problem is not about those characters, but rather how Author rushed the 2nd half which ruined it all for me. The demons coming into the human world is only towards the end of the novel. Author could have wrote a cool arc with those new characters in mind.

      [collapse]
    • MC became s*upidly OP towards the end. He became so OP that even a devil cannot lay his hand on him. He became a god-like existence that surpasses the dragons. Hence, the final battle is just pure tragedy. It only took 2 chapters to end the final battle.

The story is ok. Standard reincarnation story. It is a magic world that is basically a videogame, except it is the real world for the MC. MC knows where all the powerful things are, all the future important people, and all the important things that happened over the last 20 years of his life. He decides to power level his way to becoming king.

However, the translation is just so hard to continue. I don't know how people can finish this story with this quality of writing. I am not blaming... more>> the translator, as I am sure it is hard. But it clearly needs a new person involved to proof read it in order for the story to be passable for English readers. I want to read more, but I just can't. It is like reading baby talk.

My rating of 2 is mostly because of the translation. Probably give it a 3.5 if I could read it. It is a simplified version of Amber Sword except with much worse translation and its not a video game. <<less

I really liked this the first like 200 chapters, even though I slowly got more and more frustrated by the sound effects. At least 4/5 up until the story devolved into only being wuxia with hardly any world building whatsoever. At first it seems like it's going to be about actually kingdom building in some way, but it's all fighting the last 100+ chapters. The new technologies, trading, policies etcetera that were hinted of ends up just being "It was the best sh*t ever and all the people loved it... more>> to death" and that's it. There's no closure for any of the characters, it just feels like a 10 year old had his dream fulfilled. The writing also got extremely repetitive and lazy the last chapters as well as rushed like crazy. All fights and plots are "It was all over/he thought there was no hope/they had finally won... but it was then!" in one way or another. I think I read "But it was then..." more than a thousand times during those chapters.

The world seemed really amazing and vast at first and we were introduced to lots of things that seemed to be important for the future, only for them to barely be mentioned in a sentence while the main character punches 10 newly introduced "last bosses" in about 20 chapters.

Very disappointing read. It's like a completely new author wrote the final third/half of the novel.

PS, the last chapters fairly well translated at goblinsguide. At least compared to other MTL attempts. <<less

After the 150 chapter it got really hard to read, the translation wasn't a problem for me since english is not my mother language and I don't really care about that, but the problem is that the MC don't have any real challenger and simply get everything easily.

Spoiler

As he becomes more powerfull he would easy get much more enemies than he has now but the prince who supports him do not to feel threatened by his rise to power and it doesn't make anyone suspicious of him. A young man getting so much as the king himself can easily have different thoughts such as becoming a monarch but the only person whom even considered that was Ian.

The nobles are really good at schemes and strategy but they never learn anything and continue to use the same tactics and that probably would not happen.

The novel is not that bad, but not that good as well. It have the time element, where MC takes advantage of his knowledge of the past to gain a better future. (Like typical Isekai characters)

The good points are:

•No harem

... more>> •MC have a decent personality

The bad points are:

•Plot hole - some events are missing or maybe the author forgot about it or prolly skipped

•Personally, I think the ending was rushed

If I'm gonna rate it in numbers, it's about 3.5. If you'd like story with no heavy drama or thick plot - give this a try and judge for yourself. <<less

This novel is very good. I mean, it just naturally pulled me in and entertaining me whenever I got free time. I did read all translated chapters a little too fast lel :P

Overall, in my eyes this novel is brilliant. Now there are people that obviously have better eyes for details than me but some reviews are just pain in the ass. Simply put, f*** off y'all.

This is very entertaining and fun novel with plent of action and when MC achives something or someone praises him even I feel the... more>> goosebumps :) 10 out of 10 would recommend of course. <<less

This is a novel about tr*sh talking. Read about enemies on the battlefield tr*sh talk for half a chapter before dying. Read about assassins cutting through the target's guards and tr*sh talk the target for a chapter while rescue comes. Read about "brilliant" political masterminds tr*sh talk in public and laugh like cartoon villains. The novel started out fine but just keeps getting worse with each arc. At the end I was skipping 90% of each chapter because it was filled with s*upidly boring tr*sh talk.

I read till 50 chapters for now. All I can say is, the novel really gets on one's nerve. Honestly there are lot of good "reincarnate back in time" genre, and this certainly isn't one!

If you're fine with MC who steals someone else's achievement from his previous life (for e.g, spear technique of his genius friend, strategy established by one of the geniuses) and shows off as his own in this life then proceed with the novel. Else not, for those of you this isn't one you can digest.

Another thing... more>> is, he acts all confident when some wars happens that he already encountered in his previous life and "devises" the strategy for it, however when something unexpected happens due to butterfly effect, he gets all cold feet at the beginning (but somehow manages). This portrays MC in a way that he's nothing but an imposter who can't do anything if things go out of control.

P.S: If you're all really interested in "reincarnate back in time" genre, "I recommend The World Online" which is gold. <<less

This novel is about war tactics and strategies, and it was well-written at that. The character development is good, MC is naturally a good person who had seen things when he was a soldier. Every arc had made me anticipate and nervous, and simply root for the MC and his subordinates. There's betrayal and such, but the MC is amazing as he already expected it and he's not dumb but calm and collected.
