The protagonist is certainly safe from any dangerous encounters, even if he weren't smart and careful, since the ML would just protect him. He already has a couple of times, like when he stopped his writing during the test and prevented him from entering the counseling room and leading him to the toy room, and even going so far as to disclude him from the sorting event. Though protagonists are always safe in stories like this, at least until the end, they at least run the risk of getting injured or losing a loved one. Since all of the people he's grown to care about so far are already dead or just not human, he's pretty much invincible.

The fact that the bigger fella is so terrified of Tan Lin and the first reaction people have about the protagonist playing a game with a ghost speaks volumes about what everyone else is going through.
