“Until the day humanity falls.”

In the year 2020, Earth’s magnetic poles disappeared and humankind was nearly wiped out by cosmic radiation. Within the span of a hundred years, living creatures began to mutate and devour each other while the remaining humans, numbering in the tens of thousands, struggled bitterly in their man-made bases.

In the Abyss, home to the mutated xenogenics, there lived a sentient little mushroom. Because it had been nourished by the blood and flesh of the deceased human An Ze, not only did it take on a similar-looking human form, but a similar name as well: An Zhe.

An Zhe is determined to go to the human base to search for his spore, which had been harvested by humans. Once there, however, he faces the omnipresent risk of discovery and certain death as he tries to keep his non-human nature hidden from the Judges, whose responsibility is to inspect for and eliminate xenogenics like himself. And of all the Judges, Colonel Lu Feng is the most perceptive and merciless—as soon as he determines that someone is a xenogenic, he will execute that person on the spot.

But An Zhe’s mutation goes undetected by Lu Feng’s eyes, and so a tale of humans and xenogenics unfolds…

I really loved this novel. I was just looking for something to read and pass my time but I didn't expect that it would take over my top favorites. The description is cute but I must warn you that it is NOT AT ALL cute, well except for the little mushroom. But still, I REALLY RECOMMEND READING THIS BOOK at least once in your life. IT IS WORTH IT.

The plot is REALLY GOOD. The characters' development is steady and growing. I loved how the ML did not throw away all... more>> his values just because he met someone that he likes. The little mushroom is so cute and naive. Reading this story from the perspective of the mushroom really gives a refreshing view. It is like seeing the fate of humanity unfold as a bystander. Also, the emotional rollercoaster this book took me was kind of intense. Seeing the humans struggle to survive, rekindling their kindness and unity. Some parts tore my heart apart and I almost had an emotional breakdown too. Although it may seem that it is a short novel, the story is not rushed at all.

This book really made me think about humanity, our kindness, and what defines us as humans. The scientific explanations really blew my mind away, I admire the author for writing this book. <<less

I changed my review. This novel is so good that I don't need to have headaches or cringe even if I read the MTLed version. It is understandable, unlike the other novels. Please give this novel a chance. You will definitely learn to love this novel. Especially the plot.

I'm baffled that this work isn't rated a full five-star. Really, it's that good.

It was a beautifully balanced story of what it means to be a human in the face of true despair, the greyness of rights and morals, and hope in the midst of impermanence. Unlike the majority of the books I've read, no part of the narration ever felt forced. There is nothing I would change about this story. It's perfect, and undeniably the best novel I've read so far among both fan-translated and published English novels.

Although the... more>> world was ending, and the situation deteriorated, there was never a point where it was purely full of darkness and despair. It was balanced out with hope and the kindness of people, perhaps because it was written from the perspective of the little mushroom who was untainted by evil and whose appearance was harmless and loveable. His attitude was merely reciprocated.

I really appreciated how all the people he came across were not unnecessarily evil like how it is in many novels, portrayed as such to enhance the main characters' good qualities.

The worldbuilding is also highly believable. It wouldn't feel like a stretch if our current sciences are all overhauled in this manner one day. It's true that our current systems seem to be more concerned with neatness rather than accuracy and we actually know very little. We can't even decrypt our brain--how will we decrypt everything else? The theories were all highly readable too and the information is timely since we learn as the mushroom, who knows nothing but some literature, learns. There weren't any cases of info dumping where I had to reread twice and still struggle to understand.

And well, the best part is the happy ending! I did tear up twice while I was reading but I love how they ended up together and their sacrifices all paid off. Perhaps some people will argue that an ending like this where everything's well and no one gets hurt is unrealistic but I'm a sucker for sappy endings.

This book will probably occupy the top 1 place in my reading list for a long time. <<less

I really love it

I finished it in a day and I don't understand how the time passed. Among the novels that I wish had more chapters. First of all, each of the characters has different characteristics and goals. you can find yourself while reading. I hadn't really looked at the reviews and expected an enjoyable read, but this one was definitely painful.

my whole day was gone for the novel but I still don't regret it :) I wrote all this with the help of translation, I hope there are no... more>> nonsense sentences... And this is my first comment. I'm definitely not excited... <<less

WOW Just wow

I would have liked it to be longer, I really enjoyed it. I didn't expect it to be so... tragic, I really had to remind myself that at the end of this story there has to be a happy ending.

The plot is amazing, a bit different from other "apocalypse" and "end of the world" stories, it was extremely interesting.

The MC is absolutely fantastic and the ML is not far behind, I really loved all the characters.

if only they majority did not have to die :)

[collapse]

Their relationship goes from little to little and it's extremely cute, they live through so many things and I'm glad I read this kind of relationship.

There really are moments when I was thinking about what the characters were going through and it really hurt. This story is fantastic, but as I said it is very sad and leaves you with that bittersweet taste. It leaves you thinking about what the human race is capable of doing to survive.... <<less

My favorite BL novel of all time, it is sweet and sad and beautiful. I cried so much at one point I had to quit reading. It does have a HE, but the journey to it takes some sad twists

The writing is poetic and the translator did a wonderful job

I cannot recommend this book enough. It is practically perfect

Edited (2 March 2025]: I just finished another novel that I enjoyed as much as I did Little Mushroom. It is The Human Cub's Guide to Wasteland Survival I highly recommend this... more>> novel, also <<less

This is one of the best chinese novels I've read, and I'm not saying this just to write a positive review. I literally read it in one sitting, and there was never a time when I felt like actually taking a break or anything else because every chapter was too interesting it made me want to see what's gonna happen next.

It's ironic that I'm the kind of reader who is not really fond of angst but still continuously reads a lot of the sort. However, this novel is truly wonderful... more>> and I wish more people would read this and give the appreciation it deserves.

Also, if there were people who said that this made them ugly cry, that's mainly because it's so beautifully written that you'd thank yourself for giving this a novel a shot. <<less

first of all, this is not a fluffy novel so keep that in mind when start reading.

this story is so well writing from start to end, every detail that may seem insignificant has its meaning in the end. I loved how the author explained all that were happening with physics, it was a detail that I really loved. I appreciate a lot the effort.

the main couple isn't that romantic and deep but I'm VERY satisfied with how they developed their relationship. An zhe and lu feng are really cute together... more>> and they love each other so much.

this is a perfect novel to read something short but well writing that will keep you intrigued every chapter. <<less

What does it mean to be human?

Are we human because of our biological make-up? Our will? Our values, principles or perhaps our moral integrity?

... more>> I don't know.

However, what I can say is that the little mushroom was indeed very human, despite only being just that: a little mushroom. This novel is about desperation. A desperation to cling on to humanity against all odds. And the lengths to which people would be willing to go to in order to protect a world where hope is as fleeting as an unshielded candle in the path of a raging tornado. After all, all seems futile in the wake of death. Yet, somehow, outside of all expectation and probabilities, humanity and hope seems to arise in the strangest of beings, from the strangest of places.

Then, if such is the case, what does it truly mean to be human? This was probably not a very helpful review. But these are just a few of thoughts I had straight after finishing the novel. Put simply I highly recommend this book. So, just read it, it's a thrilling emotional rollercoaster.

Ps. The description is somewhat deceiving, yes, there is fluff but just nowhere near as much as what was indicated in the description. But nonetheless the less, the novel itself is far greater than what was alluded to in the description.

As always, thanks to the author for this wonderful piece of literature. And likewise, thank you to the translator. <<less

It made me feel so many emotions!! I did know it wouldn't be a fluffy sci-fi novel but I still was shocked at how depressing it was like every chapter felt like there's not going to be hope and everything is going to sh*t and OH MY GAD NOOUUU!??

So yeah, that's the type of feelings I felt :-)

I rate this novel a 50/10

Honestly, the end was kinda anticlimactic for me... I mean, why keep crying everywhere that it was HE, I didn't wanna know, I wanted to suffer some more. :p

This is high quality MTL, but still MTL. ^^'

Oh, yes, I hated the character of Polly, I mean I was kinda creeped out with that "child" thing, and that miraculously, he was such a good and generous person that even Lu Feng could feel close to... From that point (Polly's appearance), it went downhill for me...

Before that, it was good, great. Well,... more>> it's very good when you compare it to its webnovel pairs, but just "normal" if you compare it to any sci-fic book. Well, the BL part it definitely a +

So 4/5 for me. <<less

Goosebumps!!!

I procrastinate for so long because I dont really like sci-fi / fantasy/ supernatural genre. There are still a lot of good stories that I made a pass (Earth is Online, SPL) because of, yeah, I dont like the genre.... but Im glad I give this one a try. 3 chapters and Im hooked.

I adore little mushroom (MC) so much... he is cute and brave.

... more>> ML faith is admirable. You can judge him but you can not fault his dedication.

I love the world building.. death is inevitable, its sad and tragic.

I cried.

But in this hopeless world you will find sweetness.

What a wild ride!

Its HE. <<less

The ending is so satisfying!!

For someone who is too tired to read a blatant BL, and want someting with real plot, but still has romance that slow build, this novel is the right novel for me to read

The world building is amazing. MC and ML didn't immediately fall in love. ML in nature is a guy full of suspicion. And MC is not someone with naive brain too. When the romance come, It will hit you hard! After all those teasing in the beginning, slowly and surely fall in love... more>> with each other, and then the tragedy come, and separation, and happy end!

So satisfying

And this is being translate by Chrysanthemum Garden, so the translation is 5/5 👏 <<less

WOW!!!

I actually cried while reading this...

MC is naïve, like a child seeing the (human) world, for the first time - at some points this can across as cute when the story itself is not something I would label as Fluffy.

... more>> As for the ML... scary fits at first glance but readers should know better than to JUDGE a book by its cover...

I really enjoyed/enjoying reading this story, I read it practically non-stop from Noon 'til night and during the night 'til early morning - all the way to chapter 89.

I recommend reading this if you like the topics: (not zombie) Apocalypse, Non-Human MC. Science stuff, MxM <<less

I didn't think I was going to like this one but here we are, folks. I read it and now I can't stop thinking about it:

  1. It's HARD scifi. There are dense concepts in here that are super well-thought-out and researched (magnetic fields? Organic mutations?? String theory???). I'm used to western scifi where the "science" part of science fiction gets shoved off to the side a lot of the time. This was a lot, and it was a Delicious Treat that I chewed on for weeks after finishing.
  2. It's post-apocalyptic and the author did a spectacular job of setting up the resulting society. It breathes. It lives. It functions outside of the immediate needs of the characters. I love feeling like there's a whole world going on in the background that has nothing to do with the main story, and this delivers.
  3. The relationship between the MC and ML was actually a little lackluster at times (my only criticism - MC was so naive that it was hard to get the chemistry going I think) but boy howdy the ending got me. I shed real tears with my own eyes.
  4. Just ignore the summary and read this novel.

I loved the world building in this story. Full points to the author for creating a unique apocalyptic world.

Unfortunately, the characters are flat. The outcome can be guessed. I was not at all invested in any character. OP ML, cute MC yada, yada, yada.

The translation is good. I think if the translation style had been tweaked a bit, the horror of the apocalypse would have stood out more.

A good read nonetheless.

Somewhat I did know this series will be perfect. After I started reading, I realized that every sentence in this book has an aesthetic taste. The descriptions are realistic and the images can be easily envisioned. It feels like I'm watching a movie.

Spoiler

MC: Our main character has a pure and honest personality. He has no complex thoughts and a fairly simple mind. He's not smart, nor does he pretend to be smart. This makes him extremely cute. But hardworking and determined. He is determined to put himself in danger so he can reunite with his spor. Do not understand the term "spor" here as if it were the child of the main character. It's more of a vessel that lives symbiotically with it.

An Zhe is too bright for this brutal world. He just shines. In ML, he quickly admires its radiance.

Also, the fact that he sacrificed himself for humanity after going through so many things shows how kind-hearted he is.

ML: When you first meet the male lead character, you think he is a ruthless, cold-blooded, callous killer. But over time, ML becomes the most pathetic person for you when you see that he is doing nothing but suppressing all the emotions in him, only willing to be a pawn for the good of people, to keep people alive.

ML has killed so many people that it doesn't even know how many. But it overcomes the guilt that will begin to rise by constantly repeating what it does to keep people alive. Countless times they ask him "Do you regret it?". He never regrets what he did. At first, I could not understand his interest in MC. But when the story went forward and retold some events from ML's point of view, I could do nothing but sympathize with him.

These two must be protected! We should open an association or something. This sweetness, this integrity, this story should be read and taught. 。 ・ ゚ ・ (ノ Д`) ヽ ( ̄ω ̄)
