“Until the day humanity falls.”

In the year 2020, Earth’s magnetic poles disappeared and humankind was nearly wiped out by cosmic radiation. Within the span of a hundred years, living creatures began to mutate and devour each other while the remaining humans, numbering in the tens of thousands, struggled bitterly in their man-made bases.

In the Abyss, home to the mutated xenogenics, there lived a sentient little mushroom. Because it had been nourished by the blood and flesh of the deceased human An Ze, not only did it take on a similar-looking human form, but a similar name as well: An Zhe.

An Zhe is determined to go to the human base to search for his spore, which had been harvested by humans. Once there, however, he faces the omnipresent risk of discovery and certain death as he tries to keep his non-human nature hidden from the Judges, whose responsibility is to inspect for and eliminate xenogenics like himself. And of all the Judges, Colonel Lu Feng is the most perceptive and merciless—as soon as he determines that someone is a xenogenic, he will execute that person on the spot.

But An Zhe’s mutation goes undetected by Lu Feng’s eyes, and so a tale of humans and xenogenics unfolds…

At this point I've simply accepted that Chinese novels have incredibly bad synopses. Like, 100% unrelated to the contents or tone of the book. This book's summary is a particularly egregious example.

This is an apocalypse story. The romance is minimal. ... more>>
Spoiler

at least 95% of the human population at the start of the story - which is already a fraction of the population that once was - is dead by the end of it.

[collapse]

A trigger warning in spoiler tags for something that isn't a main plot point or directly shown, but is a background worldbuilding point:

Spoiler

a major background world building/plot point revealed in the second book is that all fertile women are forced to give up their freedom and be repeatedly imp**gnated over and over again. This is first revealed from the pov of a fertile child, so reading between the lines they must start underage

[collapse]

I am not giving this a rating. I finished this book because I needed to know how it ended, and I learned about myself that the apocalypse genre is not my taste. Therefore I can't rate it. I read it, it was well written, I disliked it anyway through no faults of its own.

The book is well written, if you like apocalypse fiction it's a good choice. A major theme is the line between humanity and being a monster. There's also a strong theme of the value of hope and kindness in the face of the utter futility of either.

Spoiler

there's a "happy ending" in the sense that humanity isn't completely annihilated, only mostly wiped out, and the two main characters are among those spared.

Incredible story, not like your usual brainless fluff. The author put much thought into the story and main characters are likeable. Don't be put off by the tragedy tags, and give this a read. I didn't think I would enjoy a Sci-Fi story this much and I look forward to the extras.

Great world building and things make sense. If there's only yaoi scenes, it would be perfect, lol. But overall, it's highly recommended to read.

? I can easily say THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITES!! ?

I cried.?

I was on the edge of my seat. ?

The slow maturity of their relationship was heart warming and gut wrenching.?

The despair in the story sometimes left me wondering if this was going to end badly...?

And the translation was good.?

The reasons I didn't give it 5 stars?

Spoiler

I wanted more romance. I also wanted the MC to be more useful. He seemed pretty useless most of the time. I mean, most of the time people had to pull him out of danger cause his reaction time s**ked. He barely knew how to protect himself. ? And he was a bit of a cry baby towards the end. But I'm glad I got to see him grow into his emotions.

Also, some of the science theory was kind of boring and often contradicting each other so it was hard to follow some of the logic, so I skipped over some of those parts.?

But it's still one of my favs!! I'm putting it on my top ten of BL webnovels! ? <<less

Although it is still ongoing I really really had fun reading it.

I don't usually read this type of BL novel where there are not much smut interactions between the seme and uke but DAMN this novel changed my mind.

f*ck the romance between them, the story is enough to make me want to read more.

I'm also hoping for more extras from the author. I'd still like to read them ya know hahahahaha.

Ain’t gonna have a detailed review because everything that needs to be said is already said by other reviews but as a reader...

Its my first time giving 5 stars however it is because this story deserves it, well written, thought provoking, heart stabbing emotional work that made me cry at 5am in the morning. Its a beautiful story with beautiful characters and the good and bad of humanity.

Just give this a read and you won’t regret the time and heart you’ve spent reading.

Hey~~ I like this novel. It almost like 'The Laws of The Other World' with all the infection from mutation plants and animals. It's apocalypse but not Zombies.

I only read till c.32 and all characters I met, died. At this point, I feels like Attack on Titan again ahahaha

The relationship between MC and ML at this point is between acquaintance and friends. The ML suspected MC is not human (he is not) while MC afraid of ML finding out but still need to get close to find his spore.

I read the last chapters of the raw (MT).

I absolutely adore the story. It is not your typical apocalypse setting and feels really fresh. The characters are very profound and their feelings and character are well thought through. I love the little mushroom who feels more human than every other human in the story, despite not actually being one. He gains even more of a human feeling the further the story goes. The judge as ML is a little bit lacking in comparison, but still a great character.

The story is... more>> shonen-ai, but the MC and ML never go further than a kiss. If you want a lot of bl action, this isn´t for you. Even thou, the mutual feelings they share go very deep and I am rooting for them. <<less

Never have I ever been so invested in a danmei novel. The story is unique and heart-wrenching, the characters make me shred tears, and the writing leaves me content. Every chapter is a roller coaster of emotions and thus, I can only say that this is the best danmei novel ever written.

Don't let the summary fool you. This story is filled to the brim with knives. Slowly cutting your heart into pieces. But it is so good that you'll gladly hand your heart over. And when you're crying your heart out over a mushroom, just remember this: It is a happy ending!!!

I'll say it again!

This! Story! Is! SO! GOOD!!!!!

(I've never left a review before. That's how good this story is!!!!)

I know it's too early to leave comments but this is a masterpiece!! I love the way the author wrote the story. It is so fantasy, I can imagine what is happening. I love it. It is so different from the other apocalypse genre this is nice. Thank you author for creating a masterpiece. Thank you translator for translating this story. I love it. ❤️? Update:

This is one heck of a coaster ride. It gives you crying moments, sad moments, heartbreaking moments. However there are also heart touching moments or fluffs... more>> and sweetness so it kinda balance each. I really love this story. <<less

Every Trial Judge have rules to follow to save the man kind to it's end. It might be cruel to others but it's good for all. Others might hate them but its the rules. Human must survive! And kill the monster!

Destiny makes them meet. A ruthless judge who only follow the rules. A judge who can identify the target in 100% rate. The person who don't even blink in killing monster. A joke of fate to introduce him to the innocent mushrooms. A bystander one who just want to protect... more>> its spore and take care of it until its end.

He knows he's right. His intuition never been wrong. He knows that the teenager standing in front of him is weird but why the machines saying his wrong. Did his intuition failed? or this person is just weird.

One person that makes him doubt his intuition. The person who makes him hesitate by more than ones. The person who will change his life. The person he didn't expect who will judge him and he's the one who give the privilege to do so... that little mushroom.

It's a really interesting concept of apocalypse and different than other apocalypse genre. It's not full of angst or misunderstanding but it's also not the sweet fluffy kind. There are some sweet interactions here and there.

It's a Happy Ending!

Many times when you read this you feel like it's going to be a Bad Ending but it's not so just hold on!

One thing I want to complain is the lack of extras QAQ

This became one of my favourite novels so far. Action parts are amazing. Summary seems fluffy tho you should prepare yourself for the coming sad and depressing events. I love tht both MC and ML are strong. I'm satisfied with fluffy parts too. This whole novel will give you mixed emotions.

in a post apocalyptic world where the planet lost its magnetism and mutant creatures multiply and diversify, stealing genes from each other and preying on human to get their mental ability and infecting them with their own to turn them into mutant, most of humanity survive in fortified cities covered by artificial magnetic field in order to repulse the infection

in all that, a little mushroom happen upon a dying human explorer and accidentally get infected with human genes and memories, able to take the appearance of the human, it start to search for his spores that were collected long ago by a "judge", an human trained to recognize infected people and kill them on the spot to protect humanity

the background of the story is gloomy, but it is not dehumanising, every person is well fleshed out, every death is heavy, and there is a lot of those, yet you still want to root for an happy ending and for the judge and the little mushroom to resolve their difference and be at peace

I loved the world-building, the world itself is truly interesting to dive into so even if the romance is relatively slow, you aren't trudging through the chapters at all. Its tragic at many points, as one can tell even just from the first few chapters, but
Spoiler

it has a good ending!!! So don't worry, my friends.

I will say the relationship, for me, between the MC and ML was iffy at times. However, the characters by themselves I quite enjoyed!

The first danmei I've ever read and it unfortunately set my standards way too high. I love the moral debate of playing judge, jury, and executioner. I love the contradiction of acting monsters in order to preserve humanity. I love how both MC and ML fall in love and learn to participate in humanity's joys and sorrows. I love the pseudoscience behind the distortions and frequencies.

So the primary complaint is that MC is like an innocent child. I have to disagree. He doesn't act like one — he acts like... more>> a non-human trying his best to play pretend. He learns fast and isn't oblivious or s*upid. Eg. He knew Hosen had bad intentions and immediately understood what Josh wanted after Boss Shaw educated him.

Considering his background and dedication towards humanity, I actually never found ML cold but I can see why people would think so. If you can, I really recommend reading the original Chinese novel or listening to the audio drama as there are additional scenes that made ML less cold. Eg:

Spoiler

After crashing his plane and before running into Xi Bei, Lu Feng killed a monster and asked An Zhe "Wasn't that handsome." (referring to his shooting and not the monster LOL)

They also ran into a second monster and Lu Feng asked An Zhe if he was going to eat it.

[collapse]

The setting of Little Mushroom is a volatile world on the verge of death anytime. And for MC and ML to cross paths in the wilderness and fall in love makes it truly miraculous. This remains my favorite danmei to date. <<less

Sob sob. This is such a beautiful story. I really don't have any words to describe it better. Ethereal, hopeful, full of despair, but a chronicle of the tenacity of the human race and a quiet cute relationship between the most unlikely of partners. I've never had a book I wished I could read again or go back to the time when I started to read it, but Little Mushroom is that book.

As a physics student, I noticed some parts were incorrect (creation of Earth's magnetic field), and maybe other... more>> things are, but it's like a pie where you find chunks of fruit still left. Unexpected, but it makes you so happy and you look forward to more. My gosh.

I think only raving mad people would give this book less than four stars, and people not very interested in the science might rate it exactly four stars, but anyone else would simply fall in love with this book.

If there's one book you should read again before you die, it's this one. An Zhe, Lu Feng. Be happy and live long. Lu Feng, stop bullying my baby so much even though it makes you happy. <<less

"I'm just often puzzled by one thing, " she gently stroked Lily's hair. "We resist monsters and mutations, resist foreign genes contaminating human DNA, to preserve uniquely human will and avoid domination by beastly instincts... But to achieve this goal, everything we've done violates human morality. And the collective we've formed—everything it does, from resource acquisition to growth to reproduction—can only be described as animalistic. Humans are no different from the monsters outside. We just use our flexible brains to give our primal behaviors a self-deceiving justification. Humanity is just one of many ordinary species—born like all life and soon to perish like all life."

Something about the primal urge in all living things to reproduce--to continue its species, to have children, to continue on in its existence. Life is so... more>> amazing when you think about it, about how everything continues generation after generation so desperately. Animals must breed and continue their line--why? Humans have the need to continue with a rationalisation to preserve the "human race" out of pride and love for its history and future, but animals do not have that rationalisation. They just breed, and have children, and make sure their children survive to adulthood, and it is just instinct. The Little Mushroom is much the same, with its spore being more important than life. There is no rationalisation, no desire to continue on its species--only a need that doesn't even need to be explained because it is that instinctual. People tend to treat the phrase "Indomitable Human Spirit" as some kind of sacred phrase--and it is a hopeful phrase and I like it--but it might be more apt to call it the "Indomitable Living Spirit" because there is no single species as a whole that isn't engineered entirely towards continuing its own existence.

You'll notice when you watch documentaries that when not dedicated to a living thing's feeding and hunting habits, it will focus on its mating/childrearing habits, because that is its purpose. Mammals instinctually going into heat, birds returning to the same place at the same time of year for the rest of its life, 250, 000 deep-sea squids coming up to the surface at the end of its 12-month lifespan just to lay eggs and die, moorish idols braving the hundreds of sharks for hours just to make it to their breeding grounds, mushrooms glowing in the dark to attract specific beetles that glow to signal mates just so the beetle can spread its spores, a tree-frog guarding its eggs from wasps with its body and risking death-by-stinging. Sorry I just love nature so much this is a complete tangent, but life is wonderous and this novel is making me emotional about it.

TL;DR - every single thing in life desperately struggles to survive and continue on its species. it is why this novel constantly repeats "do not go gently into that good night".

Anyways. Most romantic scene in the whole novel right here —>

Spoiler

Suddenly he said, "You should die."

Lu Feng tightened his grip on his fingers and asked, "Why?"

"I'll grow on you, " An Zhe said expressionlessly, "Eat all your blood, organs, and flesh, and finally grow on your bones."

[collapse]

If I was Lu Feng I wouldn't have hesitated to accept that offer. It's fun, it's lovely, sometimes funny, the protagonist is silly. The romance is lovely and the way they love each other is gentle. They love each other so much. Oh, and also the existential dread, yet the indomitable human spirit. I think we can count this story as horror.

Edit: I'm glad I got the message of this story entirely on-point.

Spoiler

A being's function is to live. A species' function is to continue.

Humans never went gently into that good night.

The bonus stories are so cute they're so cute. An Zhe you are so silly and precious and WHAT DO YOU MEAN
