I understand James's view of the protagonist being naive. It's common sense for a modern person to carefully read any contract that requires them to sign it, or else you might find yourself suddenly drowning in unpaid overtime and difficulty finding new jobs. Whenever I read a book where the main character willingly signs a contract with an obviously suspicious being, I never find even a hint of pity when they end up losing their humanity.
