Whenever I read a book where the main character willingly signs a contract with an obviously suspicious being, I never find even a hint of pity when they end up losing their humanity. In fact, I feel spite towards them. "What exactly were they thinking when they agreed to give up their free will for living? Did you really think that you could maintain your dignity? I understand James's view of the protagonist being naive. It's common sense for a modern person to carefully read any contract that requires them to sign it, or else you might find yourself suddenly drowning in unpaid overtime and difficulty finding new jobs. I understand that our protagonist needs a roof over their head and a better future, but she doesn't have anyone else to blame other than herself.
