At eighteen years old, Lin Qingyu was married as part of a Chong Xi into the Nan’an Hou Mansion, becoming the ill Lu Wancheng’s male wife.

On the eve of their wedding, Young Master Hou lay lazily on the bed and said, “Beauty, to be honest, I really don’t want to engage in domestic struggles. I just want to drift along, eat and wait to die. I want to be a Salted Fish.”

A year later, Young Master Hou became gravely ill. He took Lin Qingyu’s hand and sighed, “Wife, I’m going to die, but I think I can continue to transmigrate. In order for you to properly recognize me in the future, let us set a secret code.”

After the death of Young Master Hou, Lin Qingyu was prepared to stay a widow all his life.
Lin Qingyu would rather die than remarry.

Unexpectedly, after only 1/2 a year, …xoxo… actually came to propose marriage & said “If odd, change; if even, remain the same?”
LQ: “…I will marry you.”

After two years …

Lin Qingyu knew that although his husband was a bag of lazybones, no one was his equal

I don't see where the hype is coming from. I don't understand, cause by no means I'm gonna stand a character who is evil and cruel when it's not even needed.

Spoiler

The Crown Prince only laid his eyes on him but he didn't really harm him yet he's hell bent on his life. Okay, I understand, but the way he used Shen Huaishi is way too much. Also, was there any difference between him and Xi Rong? At least Xiao Jie was innocent, he knew early on that Xiao Jie isn't fit for this position and his heart was so pure yet your favorite MC ruined his life. When Xi Rong pointed out his crimes and told him about retribution, I really hoped he would get his karma.

[collapse]

Some people are forced to be evil, and some are born evil. If it was the first, if he had suffered to the point of being evil and cruel, I'd at least understand him a bit. I personally feel like the original book plot was more interesting than this.

Don't attack me, people have different opinions. Wasted my time. Kbye <<less

This novel made me laugh, cry, and giggle uncontrollably.

The romance is so sweet that it made my tooth ache. The ML really knows how to get the Big Beauty MC (hell, the things he says makes my heart flutter). The ML and MC are both endearing to readers, and that is why it's so heart wrenching whenever something sad happens to them.

The MC = a Big Beauty that hides a very malicious heart

The ML = a Big Salted Fish that would only do what he deems important (and does it... more>> greatly).
Spoiler

and that one important goal in his life is to give the MC freedom to act and not surpress his malicious heart (too much dog food huhuhu)

[collapse]

The author did a great job balancing the comedy and the angst. Additionally, I'm really satisfied with the ending and I'm glad that the author left it like that. But because of it, my listlessness after the ending of a great novel acted up again :')

Anyway, I sincerely recommend it. <<less

EDIT: down below the dashed lines is my original review BUT I went back to finish it and let me say I was a bit interested until it started to go downhill again - so if you read this to get a feel of why this is popular (i mean usually people hear that in the first marriage the transmigrator is very sickly and frail) - I advise you to only read up to the end of the first marriage (and LQY's first pining) because after that it gets SO... more>> BORING - Lu Wancheng (first marriage) is basically the only one the mc/LQY had good chemistry with.. thats probably why LW is the only one on the carrd. The only thing that ever gets interesting later on is LQY's retorts to his enemies when he's actually angry and LQY being possessive of the ml.. (i mean all that about locking the ML up when he's anxious he'll die again, but not the "I'm prettiest here so if you look at someone else you have eye disease" kinda typical thing during the 3rd rebirth). Like when I tell you I was trying so hard to binge (which I begrudgingly did) since I already spent time going back to it - I went though the whole 119 chapters and now I'm like no way I want to go through the extras... for me even the last chapter was so Wúliáo de : (

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have to say I'm only on chapter 31 and I am already (and have considered for the past few chapters) dropping it -

I know that usually I like cultivation/historical/xianxia/wuxia novels but this one: not only has the plot and family affairs bored me to death, the MC's over abundance in being petty and evil has already shown (i know this is cliche but characters who have a better reason to be this way such as taxian jun, shen jiu, shen jue, yue wuhuan, shen lanzhou he yu, wen kexing are way more interesting and less sickening to read) - not only that but the MC is more salted fish coded than the ML himself (other than scheming, he really dosent have much personality or character depth), I mean i'd honestly prefer if the ML would balance him out by not supporting all of his actions (like in erha ; bc I can tell the MC cares about his opinion, and atleast that would add flavor to the BORING romance - maybe the MC would be more obsessive to get his approval). The MC's premise is not even going through the medical imperial examination but just getting revenge on anyone he dosent like at first glance (its like he was looking for a chance to ruin random people's lives when getting power (he even mentioned he always thought about this before the marriage) ?? let me tell you even that younger stepbrother from wu chang jie (though he REALLY rubs me the wrong way, and I could say he is similar to Lin Qingyu/the MC of mtsf) had more reason to be mentally deranged. I feel like this could do better as a short story - prolonging it for so long - nothing is progressing except that the Hou family members and the MC are pretending that they are apart of a palace with all of these silly power passings and humiliations

The ML is basically carrying because of how witty his tounge is and how secretive he is - but even he didnt interest me that much because other than supporting mu*der and being a smart thinker/speaker he's more like your typical conservative man on the inside (he cares a lot about his manly dignity - maybe I have too much high expectations from reading more longer and plot filled books before this but shen yuan and xie qingcheng also do that, yet somehow they can do it better than him..)

I just know that the romance will remain dull because both of the characters are similar to salted fish in manner other than scheming (maybe they like showing affection by mu*dering people for one another.. but cant I just read a yandere novel in that case) - and that i'll get even less interested when there isnt a sickly ML in his second and third lives (yes, I mainly came here because I wanted to read something out of the ordinary where the salted fish gong is terminally ill/weak and has thin wrists... but once this is over, the dynamics will just be copy paste danmei if you get what I mean 😔 <<less

I feel betrayed by this seriously high amount of good reviews towards this story. The story was good at the beginning with the main couple scheming their way towards the annoying members of their current in law family was enjoyable as the mc's motive and reasoning for resentment towards them was within logic and acceptance. Until later on, he went too far at times.

Spoiler

The fact that he decieved and manipulated the shadow guard into killing the crown prince who he love, who thought of him as friend felt way too much for me. Especially how the crown prince originally didn't even kill the shadow guard's family in the first place, it wouldn't have been this bad if the author had the crown prince actually killing the shadow guard's family to make the revenge justified as well as MC making the shadow guard doing so didn't feel as immoral. I don't mind it if he schemed towards people who deserves it, but don't involve people who don't deserve it. You could just imagine how hurt he was by it.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Another major point that bothered me was how judgemental MC is, especially towards the fourth prince who was simple minded and naive. Like not everyone needs to be a shitty person like you. My disliking towards the MC grew worse when I heard about what the MC and the ML did towards the fourth prince and his half brother.

[collapse]

Everything MC and ML did feels excessive at times even towards the people who are considered to have wrong them, it feels like I am reading two villains with a protagonist buff at this point.

Spoiler

What bothered me the most as well was how easily the crown prince and there was barely details on it, and how things with his shadow guard just ended there, they were just one of the characters who existed in order to promote the main couple when they were originally the main protagonist. Even if the author excused them with the reason of they already have their spotlight with their past novel, the way things had led to felt too cheap with how bad the protagonist buff is with his death considering how it was portrayed that he was supposed tot be hard to get rid of with his novel protagonist buff. Maybe he was actually still alive and that I just dropped early but seeing how no one mentioning them, I guess the story of the shadow guard and the crown prince simply ended there.

[collapse]

I don't mind a villainous MC that are bad as long as it all written realistically where his actions are held accountable to some degree but no since everything he does is considered right because he's the protagonist so even if he manipulates and hurt innocent people for his own benefit, it's all good cause he's the protagonist here. So, everything is just aligning towards the main couple's intent, it was all that easy.

Honestly, I really did enjoy the novel at first until several innocent people are manipulated for the mc's use. The ML was also refreshing to read at first but now he's just as bad as the MC. <<less

People seem to like this book, so I won't dismiss it completely. I just couldn't seem to get into it - the mc's character annoyed me like the translator warned it might. I'll have to revisit this when I want to read about a vengeful, quick prejudice MC.

This novel is beautiful. I think I read it twice and is one of my favorites together with Little Mushroom.

The story started with the MC marrying the sickly ML as decreed by the empress. The ML is a transmigrator who died saving two people in the real word. He transmigrated into a novel his cousin made him read. From the start of the story, they were already married. They go through their married life plotting and trying to survive the machinations of their enemies.

Spoiler

The MC is an amazing character. The author did a great job on the MC's characterization and the changes in his feelings for the ML. He started as this reluctant husband who's planning on offing the sickly ML during their eedding night to being this person who fell deeply in love with his smart but lazy husband. As a warning, he is not the kind, gentle, white moonlight MC character. He's smart, ruthless, and, as he was described, full of malicious feelings. He's like a beautiful but very poisonous flower. He can off anyone who tries to do evil to him and his loved ones. He's also very protective of the people he cares about, and one of those people is his salted fish of a husband, the ML.

[collapse]

Spoiler

The ML is, well, I really love the ML, he's enjoyable to read and the main source of joy in the story. When he transmigrated at the beginning of the story, he was just 17 years old, a high school student. Sometimes his age shows and it's such a contrast since his soul is in the bodies of grown men. His character is basically a salted fish, and just wants to live a lazy life. He likes fishing and laying down, just living with the MC, but he's a great character. As much as he is a salted fish, when push comes to shove, he's there for the MC. I love how very human the ML is. When his soul was in the body of the general and he was about to lead the army to battle, he showed weakness to the MC the night before he's about to leave. He admitted that he was a little scared. But when he rode to battle the next day and fought, he gave all he got. That's basically the personality of the ML, he's a salted fish but a very dependable, kind, and smart one. He might even be smarter than the MC who's a cunning and a Machiavellian character

[collapse]
.

The ending was completely well done. There were no lose ends and what ever plot lines need to be finished were done well. I felt the author did a great job with the extras too. Overall, I like the story and how the characters were written. Even the evil guys, as much as how well deserving their comeuppance were, were 3 dimensional characters. <<less

Lu Wancheng smiled and said, "Hey, if you're talking like that, I won't be sleepy anymore."

Lu Wancheng was slightly startled. His breath seemed to hide faint excitement and anticipation. He slowly smiled. "Of course, you'd be beautiful. The way you look when you use poison is the one I like best."

Such a great read. Gets you choked up with a few gut stabs, but then gives you really sweet candy right after. I cried and laughed and shouted into the nearest pillow at different points of the story.

Something I can reread in the future with less pain because I know that the happiness will be worth it.

I love this story so much. It made me laugh and cry at times, even while knowing the spoilerish title and summary. The writing is so good and I felt like most charakters were quite well fleshed out and not too one dimensional.

Yes, we have a questionable MC and ML, but I honestly don't think they went too overboard considering the context. Ancient China just has a lot of scheming and killing, but I also don't think our couple went too far: ... more>>
Spoiler

I think they killed four major charakters.

  • First the brother who mainly humiliated the MC, but he was only actually killed when he tried to take ingredients of MLs life-prolonging medicine and confronted ML, which resulted in ML throwing up blood and aggrevating his condition.
  • Then we have the crown prince. ML wants to kill him because he knows the original ending for MC and that the crown prince would force himself on MC and cause MC to die in the original book. He is just too powerful, so MC and ML can only deal with him that way.
  • Emporer (?). Well, they mainly play with the emporers health and manipulate him, but he was already sick at that point in time. I think they did have a hand in his demise, but he was already dying.
  • The eunuch half-brother. Well, that one was the most justified imo. They tried to kill and scheme against each other and well kind of did. The eunuch pretty much killed the general.

Aside from these I don't think they killed any major characters or did anything too bad. And well considering the time in which the story is set, I think they are quite okay and humane.

They did spare the younger prince brother, they did not touch anyone in the Lu household besides the brother (and the trap for the servants) and they gloated over other peoples misfortune. The rest is just a bit of scheming which is absolutely normal in this setting. We also see that the MC will not go overboard in the extras where they are in the modern world. He is just behaving according to his setting, which is fair imo.

[collapse]

I also love that we don't have a transmigrator MC but a transmigrated ML instead. Seeing him through our MCs eyes is so well done and I also love the character of our ML. He is just such a respectful ML and so mature despite his rather young age. Both MC and ML are just very likable charakters and I really really enjoyed reading about their journey and immersing myself in their world. <<less

I now fully understand why this deserves its rating — and then some! When it comes to complex characters, this novel has definitely got it. Even the plot is so unique OML despite the common historical setting. Ack. IDK what to say outside of its tell worth reading.

Summary: As stated in the summary, the MC (Gong, first introduced as Lu Wancheng) transmigrates into a novel as a sickly cannon fodder that didn't have much to do with the plot. He drops into the role on the night of his... more>> marriage with the ML (Shou, Lin Qingyu), who really despises the fact that he was forced to marry him. The two start off as adversaries, of a sort. The ML refused to like him, while the MC is just so likeable it's almost painful T_T.

Ahhh this novel is hard to describe. It's filled with ups and downs. Even though you're told of the ending of each version of the MC early, after getting to know the characters, you still can't help but care about everything. It's just... really really good at making you care. And well, that's what novels are supposed to do! (BTW, the translation was still unfinished when I read this, but the MTL was 80% readable, so I was left hanging!)

CHARACTERS: 10/10

When it comes to characters, this novel is definitely a winner. Not only is each one (at least the main characters and the important side characters) so real they're about to jump off the page, but each one also undergoes slow development along the way.

MC (Lu Wancheng)

Our MC is the opposite of your typical Gong! In fact, he's my favorite type. He's still very responsible, confident, and competitive. It's just that his personality is not stoic and abstinent. Quite opposite, in fact. He's very talkative and very casual. Ahhh he's just super charming DX (BTW. If you're usually not into Gong!MC's you shouldn't have a problem with this one, because it's a dual-protagonist kind of book.)

ML (Lin Qingyu)

Our Shou takes on the role of the cold beauty of this book. He's truly quite cold, even cruel. His main goal in life is to comprehend everything he can about medicine... and poisons *blushingface. jpg* LOL. As mentioned, he really hates the MC at first, but he couldn't help but fall for the other's salted-fish charms.

ROMANCE: 10/10

The one sided enemies-to-lovers was interes LMFAO. The ML put through so much resistance, and it made everything feel worth it. Their overall journey to falling love was a bit tragic, but ultimately very sweet.

SETTING: 8.5/10

As a character-driven novel, the setting plays second fiddle most of the time, and is just an amusing playground. As with was based on a novel, some world settings and character settings, despite being based on the culture of historical China, were skewed so that the plot would fit in. I didn't mind this personally, cause what I really cared for was the characters. But yeah, it's true that the setting wasn't as important here as it would be in many of the other Danmei (which are more plot-driven).

PLOT: 9/10

When it comes to plot, thinkingface. jpg. It's a bit mixed. The internal plot was really great. I mean the MC dying multiple times LMFAO and the external plot (political intrigue), while not as interesting to me, did a good job encouraging the development of the characters. So, all in all, I think it was well done.

RATING: 4.69/5

This is a story I really don't regret reading. I held back on reading it for so long because I wanted to wait for the TL to finish *big sigh* but in the end I couldn't hold it anymore DX. Glad I did! I was almost thinking that I was running out of stories to read LOL. Turns out I just wasn't looking hard enough! Anyway, definitely worth it! If only for the Gong!MC mannn he's so charming! <<less

Honestly this is definitely at the top of my underrated series list!

I picked this up on a whim, but I couldn't put it down after! I'm not great at expressing my opinions, but Qingyu is so obviously an amazing and fierce character, easily one of my favourite danmei shous (I love a fierce, smart and nerdy beauty). The gong is also very likeable, he's funny, but he's not a fool. He may be a lighthearted and a lazy salted fish, but he's smart and strong when it comes to something... more>> (or someone hehe) he cares about.

If you like danmei that focus largely on relationship development (like I do) then you'll love this! The summary basically tells you what you should expect, but even knowing what would happen (in a sense), I found this story so emotionally impactful. Overall it's so funny, moving and a little morally grey. I have a soft and squishy heart, so I admittedly cried a few times.

I should also say, I loved the extras on this one!! <<less

Beautiful story with one of the best relationship developments I’ve ever read.

It ever so rare that both the MC and ML are compelling characters in their own rights, and managing to achieve that shows how good this book is.

it made me cry then laugh, eliciting more emotions from me than a book has in a while,

5/5 from me, will read again

I read this in the raws on JJWXC, and it's such a good novel!

Even if the outline of the novel is sketched out in the summary, the characters are so vivid and endearing, and you'll be invested in their journey. The novel is all about the romance and character growth of our dear salted fish and his petty, vicious (lovable) doctor.

Wow I'm on a roll I just keep finding good novel lately. This one is definitely one of my favorite too, I guess I like this author after all.

This novel was romance heavy imo, it focus on the cp relationship, but of course there's other thing like face slapping evil in laws, and political intrigue. It's unique because the main POV didn't come from the transmigrator, and well, there's the fact that they're essentially not good people.

MC was a great beauty and a genius, and he knew it. He's very... more>> confident and not humble at all about it. But he was vindictive, cruel and petty, I guess calling him psychopath wasn't entirely wrong either, but it didn't really disturb me, I think I can relate somehow, I mean, let's try to be on his shoes:

Spoiler

He really wanted to kill the Emperor and the Crown Prince because they covet his beauty. He knew they're dangerous because they have the power to coerce him to submit. He couldn't really run away, ruining his face or committing su*cide wasn't an option for him either, so death for them then. Of course he killed other people for less, like his step brother in law, but then again, that man was petty and vindictive.

I got a bit sad for Xi Rong actually, but then again, he's been warned and then still choose to be greedy. Still sad though, but what XR did was really dangerous so his retaliation was somehow justified too.

[collapse]

I think, the fact that MC was essentially the villain was actually made this even more interesting. I like that ML love this side of MC, encouraged it even lol. It's a bit of slow burn, they started of friends, and their relationship develop slowly. It's sweet. And angsty. I think I cried at the first death. The MC, cold as he was, was not cold to ML. I like that he wasn't afraid to be himself in front of the ML, to be clingy and spoiled. I love that they communicating their feeling so freely without any reserve, which sometimes was lacking on other danmei.

Just like other ancient transmigration, there's extra when they went to the future. I was actually very interested in that, I don't mind if there's more, but sadly it's quite short. Then again, in future, the MC couldn't be too freely vindictive and there's just not enough intrigue, so, understandable.

Anyway, this was a must read danmei for sure. <<less

The most overrated Bl ever. I started this because of the rating and was dissappointed. Such an unlikeable MC. He ruined the ejoyment of this novel for me, he dosent deserve the ML and their love story is shallow AF. But i'll say this, this story is a unique story, loved the plot and the ML deaths were all well done and sad, but hated the MC, he's not just mean, he's a psychopath.

Funny enough I would have loved to read a story with the main protagonists, their love story... more>> seems more interesting, or maybe its just because Shen is my favourite character. <<less

Man, it's overrated it's crazy. I kinda like the twists and turns, but if you narrowed it down, the plot is just... Okay? Arranged marriage, do bad things to people who offend you, husband #1 dies, scheme against the protags, married again, scheme against the emperor, war, husband dies, husband reborn, do bad things again... Idk it's just, okay.

For the dynamic, I personally don't hate their dynamic. They're interesting characters on their own and they also complement the existence of the other, but they don't really influence one another in... more>> a personal level. It's like two tropes mashed into a relationship. The goal of the ML at this point is just to provide comical relief in a pathetic attempt to whitewash the shou with his psychopathic tendencies.

I feel some side characters have potential to shine, Shen Huaishi, Xiao Jie and Xi Rong, Xiao Chen, even Princess Jingchun. But they weren't even given the chance to connect on readers on a personal level bc the author just said 'they been mention on the orig novel, this is different', or just 'they messed with shou so... die'. Maybe I'm just upset and find the death of Xi Rong and Xiao Cheng unnecessary and something that could have been resolved if the author just, idk tried? The only sin that Xi Rong committed is wanting to monopolize the power in order to protect him and his brother if Lin Qingyu decided to lay his hands on them.
Spoiler

The reason why Xi Rong was guarded with Qingyu in the first place is bc he also wanted an in to the power when he asked for the Tianji Camp's seal, wanting to control a military force that should have been the Emperor's, so technically, Xi Rong was forced to be on guard against him, thus forcing him to make a move of Gu Fuzhou. Qingyu just asked for it.

[collapse]
They're both on guard against one another, but they both have someone they wanted to protect and it could have been a good partnership.

Overall, plot mediocre, characters fairly interesting. Would read again if I'm going to look back at novels with missed potential. <<less

I came across a recommendation for this novel on X (twitter). This story does not disappoint. I did not expect to like it this much.

The story focuses on the main couple deliberately leaving all sorts of loose ends on the side characters. However, I liked the story so much that this didn't really get in the way of the story for me.

I think what stood out the most to me in the story that I really liked was that the main couple was not a stereo typical all bad or... more>> all good type of characters. The ML and the MC were two people that did both good things and bad things because they needed to do to stay together and after because they wanted to be together. What started off as a forced marriage ended up turning into a love that lasted three lifetimes plus a trip into modern times in the extra snippets at the end.

No spoilers here I highly recommend you go read it. <<less

i never expected to love this novel as much as I did but this is actually a pleasant surprise.

the synopsis of this is pretty much clear and straightforward. The lazybone but smart ML will experience death twice and will transmigrate three times in different bodies, and he will be married with the MC in those three times. It was constructed in a lighthearted and funny way so here I thought I was prepared emotionally and could take it lightly. But those 'death scenes' broke me.

this is overall not... more>> a very heavy novel. With the MC and ML's bickering and their entertaining interactions with each other, I sometimes forgot that this has some heavy themes. But when it wants to get emotional, tears are to be expected. I actually spent midnight reading with swollen eyes.

the characters, especially the MC, are not the typical kind-hearted, 'seeking justice' kind of characters. The MC is smart, manipulative, ruthless and a black-bellied beauty who holds a grudge even in the most simple matter. He was never the one who starts the issue but provoke him once and you'll definitely stay in his book of revenge forever and you'll never be able to live in peace. He's indifferent to most people, except his own family and people. The ML on the other hand is a young man transmigrated in this world and considered himself a salted fish. I've never encountered such lazy character in my life, lazy to point that he only tried 'jerking off' once when he was a teenager and never did it again because it was too tiring lol only the MC can pull him out of his bed. But despite being a salted fish, he's also clever and can be quite powerful when he really puts an effort. He's a little less 'evil' than the MC but he LOVES watching his baobei do ruthless things with other people who triggered him, even lending him a hand most of the time.

i swear, their character and relationship dynamic is the peak of this novel. A power couple doing bad things together? Of course i'll love it! The side characters are also quite interesting, especially shen huaishi. He deserves the whole world! He's such a precious cinnamon roll in a body of a dangerous assassin and I'm glad the author gave him a satisfactory ending. I also loved the extra chapters where the three of them transmigrated in the modern world. I want more of their antics!!

i would love to recommend this to anyone, as long as you're fine with black-bellied characters. <<less
