Yu Zhengdu joined a small start-up company that claimed to offer “life management services”……as a programmer.

On his first day in office, he received a phone call from a stranger: “Hello, I received a text message from your company that informed me of my reincarnation tomorrow……”

Yu Zhengdu: “……??”

Shang Que, the beautiful little boss, said, “New employee, welcome to the Hell organisation in the human world. A thousand years ago, I was known to the human world as the Ghost King of Luofeng Mountain.”

Yu Zhengdu: “……??” From then on, he was incredibly distressed about the development of Hell.

This is a pretty fun story that mixed tradition with modernization. I think the authors idolatry of mobile phones, the internet, and fandoms is a bit naive, but it's her book - maybe in it there's no group think and fake news and extremism.

There's also a lot of nationalism in this book, so for people who can't bear the idea that another country might want to boast about themselves, this isn't a good read.

Otherwise, it's a pretty cute story. Slow romance based on some misunderstandings. There's a couple of supernatural... more>> mysteries that get resolved, and a surprising amount of face slapping. I guess the moral in the end is that humanity is pretty resilient and adaptable. And many people can change for the better given the opportunity and training. <<less

This is an adorable story. There is an over arching plot which is slow to materialize. Most of the novel is a slice of life of a technology genius and his Luddite boss

The characters are vibrant, even the side characters. Each character in The group of ghosts and the group of programmers is unique and funny

I smiled a lot while I read this, I highly recommend this sweet, fluffy, stress free read

Read the full version from Chapter 1 - end at Chrysanthemum Garden.

The story is about a super OP programmer who signed a labour contract during his internship period without fully understanding his work environment because of job security greed and ultimately signed a one-year contract with Hell that he cannot get out of. Together with the big boss (aka the Ghost King/ our drop dead gorgeous male lead/ CEO/ the "face" of the company/ the preschooler/ the game addict/ the-guy-who-has-many-"great"-ideas), he embarks on the journey to modernise Hell and it's... more>> 6 paths of reincarnation though modern technology and socialism, and creating unique methods to earn money for the company to support Hell's path to modernization. This is a really good novel. The world building 10/10. The novel emphasis on the myths and legends of ghosts and the afterlife and religious rituals that you can skim over (don't know how true they are though), and how modern technology is used to solve the supernatural. The modern way to solve supernatural problems are so cute and logical that you really can't find fault in them. Through finding better ways to solve Hell's problems, our main protagonist creates tons of interesting tools to help the poor broke company earn them RMB. There is also a heavy emphasis on socialisim and capitalism which is humours. If you take it with a pinch of salt and read it just for fun it's alright. But if you think authors who touch on the topics are propagating them then this really isn't a book for you. The main protagonist is they sunny optimistic boy next door who isn't the overly naive type. He is a super "straight male" wink wink*. The ML is a slightly childish, not-so-human super adorable character. Both of them are enjoyable characters who are good at what they do and don't need to wait for either to save each other. This isn't a super fluffy book about their relationship but their interactions are top tier!

In the epilogue, there are 3 extras called Feiyu Amusement Park (Chapter 141 -143) that has the foreigners-look-down-on-us-but-was-ultimately-faceslapped thing going on. So for those who get triggered when they read this, you can just skip these chapters. But it isn't really that bad just skim through it for fun if y'all don't mind.

All in all, this is a must read. It's a refreshing novel with great world building, characters, plot pace and epilogue! Definitely recommend anyone who is just browsing through looking for a good read. <<less

I would have given it the whole 5 (five) stars if it wasn't for the whole 'socialism is the best, everyone needs to become a capitalist and make money', and the whole 'you don't even exist unless you make money' - the ghosts that weren't employed weren't seen as 'awesome' as the ones working.

The rest of the story is quite interesting. I like how the author tried to find a scientific way to explain religious concepts and events, only to end up giving vague explanations or simply showing that everything... more>> cannot be explained by science because it's a supernatural event (it was made possible thanks to Luofeng Mountain's power or the Chaos Realm's energy etc).

The story about the Ghost King coming to the mortal realm and having to register himself as a human, register his business and, later on, even acting like a human CEO, giving speeches at annual parties and performing for his employees, all this is quite comical. We all love the idea of someone high up trying to come to the same level as us and see the world from there. So I guess this part is very alluring.

The story between the Ghost King and his spouse is super cute and entertaining. It's absolutely hilarious that Ghost King actually learns to flirt and about human culture and traditions and relationships from dramas 😂 no wonder he's so dramatic.

I like that the author never referred to the two spouses as husband and wife. I don't personally like when authors refer to non-heteros*xual couples as that. As if the roles of husband and wife are something set in stone and one individual shall be 'masculine' (powerful, domineering, more intelligent than the other etc), whilst the other individual has to fit a 'feminine' role (fragile, always pointing out they're beautiful, always needs rescuing). I simply find it nauseating when authors use these terms. It makes it seem as if they're heteros*xual themselves and have done zero research about non-heteros*xual people, but write BL just because it's what's selling best atm. So this author gets my appreciation for not doing this.

I am super happy Peppa had a happy ending as well. It was heart breaking to hear about her circumstances when the MC and ML first met her, then it was absolutely tear wreaking when she finally reincarnated as a goose and the MC and ML raised her. Lastly, it was smile-inducing when she transformed into a human and MC and ML considered her their daughter (well, she was their daughter ever since she was a goose egg).

I feel like the author has somehow shown the good side of religion, where it unites people; but also the ugly side, where people use all sorts of methods that some psychopaths came up with with the excuse of aiding them in their endeavours.

All in all, I enjoyed the book very much (apart from hailing socialism and capitalism; I'm not against socialism but I very much oppose capitalism and the notion that people's only purpose in life is to work to make money).

A massive thank you for the translators and editors. Your work is appreciated. <<less

I will definitely miss all the characters here most especially my favorite ones-

-Ghost King family of three: SQ, YZ and Peppa the little cutie patootie office bully

-the Hungry Ghost Path's mom and son tandem- Ghost Mother of Xi and Needlepoint-Throated

... more>> -the office workers: Kang Jin and his famous wig and Zheng Yan

-Boss Wei and his daughter Momo and Boss Yang Xin

-the Feiyu Amusement Park "staff"- Hanging ghost unnie, worm seller, calligraphy seller, headless and intestine ghost

-others Daoist Mu and asst and Gao Duidui.

Arcs that I like the most: Peppa and Qin Yuejin and Zhan Keji

Overall this is a very entertaining novel, funny and the arcs most the time is catchy. Although the love/relationship arc between the ML and MC is a little slow and there's just a medium amount of fluff, it's still a very nice read. <<less

What pretty much sold me was that the world building was interesting, the process where the company from unknown to famous through many innovative product/services and investment was really satisfying, has enough comedy that hits me, and the relationship of MC and ML while not the best but their chemistry and dynamic is pretty good.

It's a pretty fun read on supernaturals and MC pretty much showing his programming skills but also dealing with ML to solve supernatural problems. This in a way promoting the company until at the climax it... more>> become pretty famous. I recommend if you like a good laugh and also learn a bit about the culture concerning worship and festivals. <<less

I'm glad other reviews encouraged me to give it a shot. Nothing about tags encouraged me. Seemed like some sort of apocalypse thing. That wasn't the case. Just give it a shot. It's a little like natsume's book of friends. If that helps.

Reread it and it's still awesome.

"Un..... " Shang Que looked at Yu Zhengdu, thought about it for a bit, then shifted his computer screen towards him, "Why don't you repair a computer for me first?"

Yu Zhengdu, "..... "

He said without any expression on his face, "Boss, developers don't actually know how to repair computers."

Shang Que revealed a doubtful look. "They don't?"

Yu Zhengdu didn't hesitate. "No."

"What a pity." Shang Que's tone was filled with regret. His beautiful eyes blinked, then he complained, "I don't know why my computer lags all the time. I think the guy who sold me the computer tricked me."

Yu Zhengdu's gaze followed Shang Que's gesture and fell upon his computer screen, then he paused, "..... "

All he could see was how Shang Que's computer had several online games turned on at the same time, and it had lagged the interface to death. 0opeNr

Yu Zhengdu stood still for a minute, then wordlessly restarted the computer.

Shang Que, "..... "

Shang Que pretended as if nothing had happened. He leaned gracefully against the back of his chair and folded his hands in front of him. "Then, let's talk about your next job ba."

Non-spoilery Excerpt from Ch2 below but still hidden just in case

Spoiler

Yu Zhengdu looked at Shang Que's face, so beautiful that it didn't seem to belong to a mortal, and suddenly felt like this was all really absurd.

He thought that he should be afraid, but for some reason, he still had the energy to bargain. He asked, "Boss, can I quit?"

Shang Que stared at him silently. After a while, he said slowly, "You could have at first. We are a very humane company..... "

When Yu Zhengdu heard this capitalist that might be a ghost or some other monster say the word 'humane', the sense of absurdity that overwhelmed him felt even stronger.

Shang Que nodded as a matter of course and said seriously, "We are a proper company that has a file in the Industry and Commerce Bureau."

Yu Zhengdu flipped out.

Socialism is too f*cking amazing, even the ghosts are so hardcore.

Light-hearted comedy with a softer but very unique romance. There are no filler chapters, the little plots are all tied together and much of the rest is for MC's growth and increasing capability of dealing with these ghostly matters. Full spread of fun characters and every chapter will make you smile. <<less

I generally don't like modern or BL or supernatural stories, but this one is worth 5 stars. It's interesting, funny, creative, the plot is consistent, and the translation is excellent. It's 90% urban comedy fantasy, 10% BL romance.

MC is the only human employee at his company, which is basically Hell/Afterlife (which in Chinese mythology, rules over ghosts, spirits, judgment, reincarnation, etc.). Everyone else is a ghost! The ML is smart, decent, innovative, and revolutionizes eon-old cultural practices with his tech skills and ideas. The ML is the laid back, powerful,... more>> gaming addict, slightly clueless in love CEO, the Ghost King. Their romance is light and fluffy and there is zero smut.

Each story arc is like a mini episode of investigative ghost hunting. The plot is solid, the characters are well written and earlier plotpoints and characters are weaved into the plot later on. Every time there was a scary ghost moment, there would be comedic elements or the MC or ML would save the day. I'm not familiar with Chinese mythology around the afterlife, but I really liked the Life and Death accounts, the Ghost Festival Garden Party, the Heavenly Lightning Tribulation (you'll see), and the Afterlife Forum. There are some really creative ideas melding technology and traditional mythology. There is also

advocating forced prison labour (as a way of paying back one's debts to society), extolling compulsory socialist education (I'm not sure what this is), and a "joke" about someone's dark facial expression being an "African ghost".

I was a skeptic at first until I read, "Our boss doesn't like bald employees."—c3

A novel that's surely breaking conventional standards. I'm completely sure that the point of this novel is to make me die clutching my stomach from stifling in deathly laughter. Simply put, it's hilarious which is why I'm inclined to rate it 5-stars in spite of its lack of more fluffy kisses! Reading this is akin to seeing cultivators from ancient times fiddling with a new cellphone. It's fresh, it's strange, it's ridiculous. But I enjoyed the... more>> concept of utilizing modern technology in order to reform the underworld. I had the strangest déjà vu & felt as if I was overlapping Mob Psycho 100 with this. LOL if only Reigen Arataka just so happened to be the Ghost King of Luofeng Mountain...

Plot is pretty linear & simple to understand. There's hints of foreshadowing here & there, but it barely touches the line of complex. Simply an enjoyable lighthearted read dealing with socialist advances in hell. I practically spat my out drink when I read that MC redirected heavenly tribulation lightning using a lightning rod- ingenious I say!

What about the CP??? Ah yes, what everyone is dying to know. I wasn't on board with MC initially since I thought he was just another pretty face with the luck of gods, BUT he's actually more than I bargained for. Witty, bold, sly- this intelligent programmer is well-suited for our tsundere ML. I was wary at the tsun comments prior to reading, but MY GOD, ML IS A PRECIOUS BABY! Even if you hate ghosts or socialism, read it for the ML because he deserves love (& a lot of snacks). Yes, the romance is a slow-burn, don't pummel me! But reading the story doesn't feel like a drag at all; you breeze right through with the comedy & nonsensical situations. The buildup between the main CP is worthwhile & wholesome. Don't miss out! <<less

This is so funny! The beginning doesn't really have a plot but as you get further into it you realize that the story is actually really intricate. I wasn't expecting all the thought that was put into it but I'm not complaining at all! It's so interesting, I love it. The ML is cute and the MC dotes on him all the time. Their relationship is really healthy and sweet, not at all like most of the other angst filled novels.

An absolute diamond, this is a fantastic novel with top notch world building and storytelling. The characters are all interwoven into the story seamlessly and realistically

I truly love the ML and MC in this novel, their interactions are just so amusing and it's nice to see their relationship progresses overtime

MC also just a regular human who probably will have regular life if he didn't got roped into ML company, but by being a regular human is what made everything interesting. I love the other side characters as well!

This is a... more>> must read in my opinion, I highly recommend this novel! Even if you don't like BL I still recommend this just for the story, the BL is just a bonus anyway <<less

High technology meet supernatural. Great novel, wonderful storytelling and good sense of humour. The kind of novel I would recommend to everyone.

Overall, it's a story of the living and breathing programmer working in HELL company, which was super broken dirt poor, plus his co-workers were all ghost (at first, there were living human working when the story go on).

MC and ML were likable and both created humour in the story. I love every characters, every setting, the plot and the overall feeling. Everything was too good. I laughed so hard... more>> and love every second of it.

This novel will make you smile. Highly recommended. <<less

A really good read. Very much mtl-able. It's got a lot of humor, is light, but also so very satisfying. The MC and ML are both well fleshed out, as are the side characters. And they actually return repeatedly and grow instead of being there just for the plot and disappearing forever. A must read story.

Love it! I reread it recently and it still rocks. I really recommend you read it! However, if you want a novel that focuses heavily on relationships, this is not it. That doesn't mean that the relationship between the ML and MC isn't sweet or cute (because it definitely is I love them), it's just that a lot of the events don't really have their relationship as the focus of the plot.

Still though, the tiny tidbits of fluff is really worth it. The relationship wasn't forced. It felt nice and... more>> smooth. Their characterization for me is also good.

Spoiler

I love the scenes where the ML meets the MC's family. So cute and fluffy. Makes my heart warm. Peppa is really cute too. I wish there were more extras focused on their family. I love them so much.

I probably won't evaluate this novel, because apparently it's not for me. Although I really liked the beginning, there are also a lot of funny moments, and I liked MC very much. But ML disappointed me. He's being too childish and childish. Especially when I found out that MC's love is just a misunderstanding. And in general, there is very little romance. I couldn't finish reading. I got bored after chapter 100. Maybe I'll come back later and finish reading.

Overall a very well-written story with great translation.

The MC & ML are both very OP (and start out that way) so this may not be one for those who likes the “character growth” type. But ngl, this was a very satisfying read.

The world building was done quite well, and the story has an easy readability to it that draws you in. You almost get s**ked in and want to experience their world. It was a bittersweet moment reading the very last chapter.

Highly recommended if you’re in a mood for a... more>> light fluffy story that is decently well written :) <<less
