After dying in the line of duty, Liang Feng inexplicably transmigrated into the Western Jin Dynasty – that short-lived dynasty that succeeded the chaos of the Three Kingdoms and preceded the reign of the Sixteen Barbarian Kingdoms.

Trapped in a beautiful but fragile body, would he use his looks to fake his way into being a “famous scholar?” Or would he raise an army and plant fields to fight the barbarians for dominance over the Middle Kingdom?

With a young wolfdog in tow, Liang Feng proves that he can do it all!

Having a headache while reading the first half! LolXD The story is written well but I feel frustrated whenever the MC is being taken advantage by all those greedy Sima family!! Fortunately, he met a good advisor hence the story becomes good around 220. I like how the MC's response is realistically written and not the usual perfect MC!

Downside: I can't feel the MC's "aura" as a former policeman. I'm pertaining to his some personality, NOT the skills. Probably due to the constitution of the body and how... more>> he bows to those in power just to survive and keep safe his small territory. It is also heavily focused on war and surviving with a lot of monotonous moments since this is a slice of life in ancient era.

Tip: jot down the names because they are really a lot!! <<less

After reading 'Back to Ming', I had high hopes for this novel because it's rated higher. My conclusion after reading... it's both better and worse than BtM.

The author goes in depth on a number of subjects like religion, warfare, industry, education, politics, philosophy, etc. This makes it both immersive and exciting (like the battles), but also makes it really confusing and drawn out (I skip most of the political parts that doesn't immediately affect the MC and his little corner of the world). This huge world also has too many... more>> named characters to keep track of, so I don't bother remembering all of them.

The fact that the author doesn't shy away from any topic also makes me uncomfortable about their views on certain things. It's especially unrealistic for a man from modern times (and especially for a morally upright police officer), to have adapted and accepted certain highly sensitive issues way too easily:

Spoiler

Forced assimilation, arranged marriages (as in he's comfortable with arranging marriages for his subordinates whether they agree or not), and I was especially turned off when MC talked about g*ooming a teenage girl to suit his preferences, should he decided on a political marriage.

[collapse]

The pace of the romance is also excruciating.

Spoiler

Here, we have the ML actively pining for 200+ chapters and the MC continuously rejecting the ML until the ML's near death experience. (And OF COURSE it would take a near death experience for the MC to have a love epiphany)

It doesn't help that the MC is (was?) a straight man who only did casual relationships back in his original life. The MC's reservations are understandable, but you'll still feel really bad for the selfless and devoted ML.

I prefer the romance development in BtM, where we got the MC and his general mutually agreeing to enter a relationship, with no fuss and no fanfare. Nobody dared to oppose them because a) MC had already become emperor at that point, and b) MC's abilities to rule the country are more important than his personal life. This is something that the people surrounding the MC of this novel struggle to accept, even when the MC already has an heir. It's irritating how they still oppose the relationship after the ML has shown incredible loyalty to the point of volunteering for su*cide missions. They do come around, though... eventually.

(PS: It's subtly implied in the epilogue that Liang Rong didn't fully approved of his father's relationship with the ML? Even after his death? He certainly wasn't as well-liked or revered in history compared to his dad.)

[collapse]

Anyway, my criticisms aside, I'm still rating this 5* because this is a genuine masterpiece of work that shouldn't 'just' be labeled as danmei. <<less

First off, I absolutely loved the historical depth the author incorporated into the story. The tidbits about the Western Jin Dynasty were fascinating, and it's clear that the author did their homework. What really elevated this aspect was the first translator's dedication to explaining and contextualizing these details. Their notes were incredibly helpful for understanding the nuances of the dynasty's culture and customs, which added so much depth to the story. The translation itself was smooth, engaging, and made it easy to enjoy the story while learning something new.

Unfortunately, the... more>> quality of the second translator left a lot to be desired. There were mistakes and inconsistencies everywhere. Names were often mixed up, terms were used incorrectly, and a lot of cultural or historical nuances were lost in the translation. It honestly felt like reading an edited machine translation at times, which was frustrating. But nonetheless, I appreciate the effort into translating the fic.

As for the story itself, the progression is solid, and the pacing keeps things interesting. However, there are some glaring issues with how the author handles information and logistics. For example, it's ridiculous how easily information spreads in this world. Party A could take over County A, and Party B would somehow know about it within two days, as if the author forgot how long communication and travel took in ancient times. Scouts and messengers have their limits, yet this story seems to treat them like magic instant messengers.

Speaking of logistics, the lack of any sense of scale when it comes to distance and travel is maddening. Armies of thousands supposedly travel hundreds of miles in a day, and they're somehow dragging massive weapons like ballistas and trebuchets along with them. Where are they keeping these massive weapons? How are they transporting them so easily? What kind of super-beasts are pulling this equipment? It's one of those details that pulls you out of the story because it just doesn't make sense, no matter how good the rest of the writing is.

Another thing that stands out (and not in the best way) is how determined the author seems to be to keep the MC in a state of constant physical weakness.
Spoiler

The MC is transmigrated into a body that was wrecked by drug ab*se, and it takes years for him to recover even partially. Just when it seems like he's going to be okay, the author has him poisoned with the same drug again, leaving him in a crippled state. It feels excessive, almost like the author is actively sabotaging their own protagonist

[collapse]

The ML, on the other hand, is... fine. He starts off a bit bland, but he does grow on you as the story progresses. He's not particularly remarkable, but he's solid enough to keep things moving without being outright annoying.

Overall, the fic has a lot of strong points—great historical integration, engaging story progression, and some enjoyable characters. If you can get past the inconsistencies in the second translation and the small details, it's definitely worth giving a shot. <<less

One of the best Chinese Historical Fantasy/BL's in the genre with well-researched details about the Western/Eastern Jin period, Five Barbarian tribes, technology, cultural, religious, and social histories. Yes, there's a lot of suspension of belief in the story in terms of the MC being such a polymath from his prior life as a high-intelligence polymath, but the story doesn't push too far ahead beyond the technical capabilities of the period, i.e. MC doesn't industrialize his nation and create guns, tanks, and airplanes to conquer the world. However, less impressive concepts... more>> like processed gunpowder, telescopes, and hydraulic power were advanced. One of the weird things in ancient Chinese history is that a lot of the inventions or innovations had precursors that just never came under development, either due to changing Emperors or scholarship. The ML was a loyal Wolf-Dog husband and you cannot deny that they were in love, beyond mere lust. The MC and ML understood one another and became a homos*xual couple without either being really a Gong/shou. They also portray something rare in a Chinese story, the MC's host body had a young son before he came into his new body. The son's interaction with his father and his "stepdad" is very interesting, teaching the kid a lot of lessons about how to love one's true partner and fulfill duties to nation and family.

Is there negative aspects? Maybe a little nitpicky stuff about communist class theory and the struggle of "the people" against the aristocracy, but in the end chapter 382-383, the new timeline seems to suggest that the class struggle theory could be disrupted by geography, allowing aristocracy to thrive. Not sure how that would work, but I think most readers may overlook the points as background noise by the author at that point in hte story on her musing. <<less

Here I leave my opinion (with possible spoilers) on various aspects of the story:

The plot:

Warning: lots -AND LOTS- of politics and war.

Spoiler

I am not at all familiar with Chinese history (in fact, almost everything I know about ancient China is almost all from the novels I have read here) so I have to warn for someone who, like me, is not familiar with said story, which the novel is very "heavy" about, has too much Chinese history and technical aspects of it, with historical figures (apparently real from the author's notes, not because I know about it).

Leaving aside my previous warning, but regarding the plot it is basically the growth of a low-ranking noble to an emperor, the interesting thing is that not only importance is given to his knowledge as a person from the "future" (or reborn) but that importance is also given to the historical and religious context in which it is found, without "abruptly" introducing ideals that were very advanced for the time in which this story is set. However, I must mention that the plot does NOT focus solely on our protagonist LF, but also gives a lot of importance to the secondary characters, having entire chapters dedicated to them, I even considered that many of them become co-protagonists, like ZB. Or his main advisors, or as the characters of the Sima clan, or as the Han (LY, LH, etc.), so it will not be a story solely focused on MC and ML.

[collapse]

About the characters:

Spoiler

As I said before (which if you didn't read it I will repeat it) : The story does not focus solely between MC and ML. Secondary characters abound and as I understood many of them actually existed in Chinese history (although possibly their actions deviate compared to real-life history). There are entire chapters that focus on many of those supporting characters, especially those who are the "main enemies" of the story as the story progresses. My opinion about these characters is that they are well structured, you know them better and, even if you don't know Chinese history, you can understand the role they may have played in their time.

Now, about MC: LF and ML: YY. To begin with, LF is a character that I consider wise, he knows how to listen and act but he also makes his own decisions and most of them for this story are generally beneficial, he seems like a good protagonist to me. Regarding YY, he is his always loyal general, I liked reading about his infatuation with his lord and how it evolved, in turn, whoever reads this should know that LY did NOT have an immediate infatuation, he rejected YY several times until finally "he fell in love" and they finally formed their relationship.

ABOUT THE ROMANCE: There is very little!!!, I am used to stories focused almost solely on the protagonists (with a lot of romance, very fluffy, which is what I like) I have to say that I was dissatisfied, I couldn't give up my bad luck, because despite being such a good story, it took a long time to have a single hint of breaking it, I felt like I was dying but I couldn't stop reading it, really a very good story.

[collapse]

IMPORTANT CHAPTERS FOR ROMANCE: Around chapter 100+ YY realizes his crush on LF -- Around chapter 242 LF discovers that YY is in love with him -- Chapter 275 is THE BIG MOMENT - finally. <<less

Read this novel if you want a kingdom building, political intrigue novel. Romance is fairly light because all the plot and details went into MC's rise to power. The strategies and historical elements truly carried this story for me (though ML is also extremely adorable).

Probably rate this a 4.5/5 because it is pretty long and I had to drag myself through a few parts. I also felt like the MC's past life before reincarnation was used quite often to conveniently explain his various talents and knowledge (but honestly at least... more>> there was an attempt to explain everything).

Really solid read if you like history/politics/military cnovels, author did a fantastic job. <<less

Classic time travel trope where the MC utilizes knowledge from the future, be it paper making, gunpowder, training, religion, food, farming etc. If you love Ancient Chinese history / Kingdom Building and doesn't care about BL I guess this is a nice novel to read. If you can't touch BL you may want to try A Step into the Past or Da Tang Shuang Long Zhuan instead.

MTL AT YOUR OWN RISK

This novel is based on real people and real places, so you should Google all the names and places so you could understand everything better. But with MTL sometimes you will get confused because certain people have several different names.

If you like history, politic and battle tactics this novel will be great for you. But if you come specifically for romance you will be disappointed because its slower than snail. To me the war is interesting enough so it's not a problem. But fear not their... more>> love stay strong for thousand of years.

4.5 Stars

Date Read: 1/6/2024

Personal Enjoyment: 4.8/5

... more>> I enjoyed it very much! Though I dislike war stories, the ones here are reasonably quick and interesting. It is also not depressing so there's that. I also really like how personable the MC is. With more talk of emotions. And I like the romance! It was kind of surprising actually. Compared to the Ming Dynasty, the romance is actually good with emotional growth. The kingdom-building aspect was also very nice.

Short Summary: Basically, it's almost exactly like the Ming Dynasty story but with more vitality and emotionally accessible. With a far better romance. Also an FYI, the story goes until the kingdom is unified and despite the characters talking about them getting older and frailer and dying before the other angstiness, it is not shown on screen. The last extra chapter shows the modern world of that timeline. And the discovery of the MC’s tomb. So it is a slightly melancholic ending but still a happy ending.

Plot: 4.5/5

Very good! It feels tight and pretty complete. Lots of common sense and logic to govern in a time of chaos. Lots of war action and money-making during the first half. There were only a few things that I feel were a missed opportunity like more real scenes with the MC’s original grandfather since he was such a big part of the MC’s life. The other was Luzhu. I feel that how the author ended her character was too abrupt after having her be one of the main side characters at the beginning of the MC’s transmigration. The author kind of married her off, off-screen. We don't even know who the husband is. I feel like we should get a more involved send-off than that.

Writing/Translation: 4.5/5

The translation I read is from Chrysanthemum Garden C1-C138. As usual, it's amazing. Lots of research and footnotes for the complicated ancient Chinese history. The rest I read until C383 from KnoxT. The quality here is slightly less mostly because there are fewer footnotes for all the historical context compared to Chrysanthemum Garden. The feeling I got from the CG translation was a transmigration historical novel while the Knoxt one is a bit more of a transmigration novel lol. But the quality got a lot better over time. The consistency is there and that is good.

Pacing: 4.8/5

Very good, no complaints! I only wish there were more extras. I didn't feel bored or that it was rushed or dragged out at any point. Surprisingly since it has so many war scenes and I dislike war stories lol.

Setting/Worldbuilding: 4.1/5

Hmm, while there was so much history and setting in the story, basically 80% of it all isn't explained and you are expected to know. Like the history of all the members of the Sima family, Buddhism, Confucianism, the government of that specific era etc. It wasn't explained in the story. So a lot of these characters aren't introduced like new characters that joined the MC. They are just dropped into the scene as people who are affecting the Mc’s decisions by their actions. There were so many usurpers and rebels, war chiefs and generals from the enemies that just appeared and died from ancient history. So there is that. I feel like it would have been more engaging if I knew all this history. Or if it was explained in the story. But that might have dragged out the story so pros and cons.

Characters: 4.5/5

So much variety. I love the MC. And the ML has an actual character arc lol. Just wish the women had a bigger part of the story than they did.

Romance: 4.3/5

The romance is good! I didn't care for it at the beginning because it was so instant love from the ML’s side. And honestly, it was so one-sided for the majority of the story. And also, the romance isn't even half of the story but like 1/4th of it lol. But the ML’s character growth and the trials and tribulations of love for the poor guy haha. Delicious! When the MC finally wavered, I have fallen in XD. The ML’s jealousy, the insecurity from the different statuses of the MC and ML, and the era of the time all contribute to his feelings, so good! And all the feels when the MC starts thinking about his feelings and that scene when he came back from that almost suicidal war tactic! So good!

This was so good. Even though the translation was off at times and even though I don't know enough about Chinese history to understand a lot of the references. The journey that MC, Liang Feng, went on due to wanting to protect himself and his people was interesting. It was like a loose piece of yarn on a sweater, once you tug on it, it keeps going and going without a good stopping point.

I liked that even until the end when MC acquired the ultimate power, MC did not... more>> lose himself and kept the needs of the common people as his priority. The story is filled with power hungry, greedy people. It makes me kind of sad to realize that these people really existed and the resulting suffering of the common people was a real thing.

The novel is a long read but it was worth it. Also, as for the romance, ML, Yi Yan, shows up early in the plot. However, it took a long while for it to develop since MC was a casanova in his original life... zero interest in the same s*x. The romance is a subplot, their interactions were sweet in a mature way and I didn't get enough. 😅

Overall plot spoiler

Spoiler

MC grows slowly from an insignificant marquess in the north to an emperor. This is due to the conflicts at the time. The royal princes were conniving against each other and the nomadic tribes were restless. MC kept having to build up his political influence and military power to ward off troubles from external forces.

ML was saved by MC. ML was about to be sold and MC bought him and gave him his freedom. However, ML vowed to serve MC and became his most powerful general. ML loved MC first but didn't think he was good enough for MC. But MC was poisoned and made a move on ML, which led to MC discovering ML's feelings for him.

Basically a Basara on very serious steroid. And a sprinkle of BL.

I liked the storytelling but eventually I became bored because at first I didn't expect this novel to be THAT detailed. Also, some things about the MC bugged me... I don't have the energy to write this now so maybe later.

Kudos to CG and KnoxT for their translation quality and the massive effort poured into translating this giant, though. I can't imagine the hours they spent on this novel.

Plot: 4.5/5

MC transmigrated to ancient China as a pretty face noble in charge of an area of land and eventually attaining the highest position of the land. He's accompanied by his loyal foreign general who helped him to conquer the lands. In the beginning, he's weak from being poisoned by his cousin. Not much emphasis on his physical weakness.

Overall thoughts:

One of my favourite stories. Ended up finding the original chinese version to read as the translation rate was too slow for me. Worthy to be read again.

Update (Feb 27, 2024)

I just have to come back here to say this. This novel really opened my eyes and mind about what's going on in the world of politics! Ever since I've finished reading it, never a time went by when I didn't relate what's happening in different parts of the world to what's been described here. I could understand the overall situation on the war fronts in different regions, migration crisis, politics and why politicians do what they do and say what they say, the differences in... more>> school of thoughts among the east, the west and the Middle East, and the psychology behind it all... I can go on and on. It's amazing how much one can learn from a seemingly unassuming BL Kingdom building novel that's steeped in knowledge and wisdom. I'm so glad I've chanced upon it. Will be reading it again once I can find the chance. Appreciate the author for writing this gem and the translators for picking this up! Highly recommended!

———————————————

The translators did a wonderful job unraveling this gem of a kingdom-building story. I thoroughly enjoyed every chapter filled with details that cannot be ignored. I plan to read it again in the future, as my initial reading felt like a quick skim to "devour" it as soon as possible. Even then it still took many days to complete it!

This novel weaves the romance seamlessly into the complexities of kingdom building. While the main couple's love is a subtle thread, it becomes the backbone of the story. As they work for the dynasty's common people, their reliance on each other adds a refreshing layer to the political narrative. A captivating read that beautifully balances love and power dynamics.

My favourite character is still the MC in every version, be it Zhao Wang Liang Feng, modern Liang Feng, or Xu Feng. He's so cheeky! But as Zhao Wang, his elegance and ethereal looks, in addition to the huge responsibility of building the kingdom to save common people prevented any edge in personality to surface. Only with the ML, his cheekiness as the young modern Liang Feng has the chance to resurface. I'd also love to read the progress of Xu Feng and his pursuit the modern ML... if only the author would indulge in those extra chapters!

Among the antagonists, I felt for Liu Yao and Wang Dao, heroic figures in their own way, while thoroughly enjoying the interactions of the MC with his ministers, officials, and soldiers.

Would love to read other works by this author when they become available! :) <<less

Kingdom building focused- about the tail end of the Jin dynasty as the world falls to chaos. As the author/translators mention, it's literally a transmigrated character's path from low nobility to emperor. If there is a novel I would compare it to... maybe World Online (not BL) or Back to Ming to do Charity (BL). Pacing and focuses are somewhat similar.

Personal rating & comments: 4.7? Loved the novel. Great world building, strong historical depth, well-paced and considered plot. It's been so long since I've read a novel that wasn't super... more>> predictable.

Didn't love the characters- didn't dislike them but I never really liked the ML, nor did I love the pairing. I did enjoy it, but there was something that stopped me from shipping them strongly until much much later, and even then it was more like- "oh they're cute". MC isn't the kind of character I really like, but he's an interesting character, and I enjoyed a lot of his interactions with different people. Read for the kingdom building and the interactions between father-son, lord-official, etc- don't expect too much romance (it really doesn't fit with the way the author approached the story).

Great translators- there's a couple terminology changes when the translator changes, but I didn't find it bothersome. Both translators did an amazing job, and both included a lot of notes for anyone who is interested in the historical background behind real figures and events. <<less

So good. It's sooo realistic like it's my first time reading a novel in the POV of a powerful person where in most novels, the MCs do whatever they want regardless og the consequences or the plot adjusts for them to make them look righteous or whatever but in this novel, the MC has to think of every decisions he makes because it may affect many people's lives. He has to use his brain all the time and not everytime he gets what he wants and he can't predict everything... more>> even though he's so smart. He is the one adjusting to the environment and what's cool about this MC is that he saved many people as possible.

I really like this novel, but while the MTL is readable, I would prefer to wait till the CG TL is done T.T They did very well for this one! It's really a great novel if you're interested in learning a little something something. Most of what happens in the story appears to be consistent with what happened at the time -- though, of course, the appearance of the MC with his golden finger (modern knowledge) shook things up after a while (and it did take a while, because the... more>> MC was really focused more on protecting his people at first and had no true ambition when it came to taken down the throne and becoming emperor).

This novel is a mix of kingdom-building, infrastructure-building, political intrigue, and action. The romance is mostly a side thing, though it's great if you're looking for internal conflicts (the ML's development is really bitter-sweet to watch!! T.T) since the MC starts off as very straight.

I wouldn't recommend this novel if you're not interested in history since there are a lot of chapters spent on recounting history from the views of the people at the time. There's another novel very similar to this one when it comes to style. I think it was called... "Doing Charity in the Ming Dynasty??" only that one was more fast-paced. The two are similar because they're plot-driven. Though I prefer the "Royal Road" more because it spends more time on the MC and ML~ It's also a little bit slower paced -- which is good for someone like me who prefers long novels! If you're the opposite, you can check out the charity in the ming dynasty novel instead!

For now, I won't be writing a full review because not even half was translated and I skimmed through most of the MTL-ed chapters I ended up reading. My opinion of the novel is already pretty high though! I think, if I were to give it a rating, it would be between 4-5 stars! <<less
