Childhood, upbringing, family background, social relations, traumatic experiences…

We keep reviewing and seeking out the motives of criminals, exploring the subtlest emotions driving them. It’s not to put ourselves in their shoes and sympathize, or even forgive them; it’s not to find some reasons to exculpate their crimes; it’s not to kneel down before the so-called “complexity of human nature”; nor to introspect social conflicts, much less to alienate ourselves into monsters.

We just want to have a fair trial – for ourselves and for those who still have hope for the world.

Wow, what a plot. It's got so many plot threads and characters that you might get confused but it all makes sense at the end. There's humor amongst all the horrors in the story. Romance is slow burn, which I like. The side characters, even the cat, are likeable and memorable. The translations are A+++... so so professional... the entire story is already translated by E. Danglars so you wouldn't have to wait at a cliffhanger.

Omg what a ride. Pls protect Pres. Fei. He deserves all the hugs in the world. It's a really good read. And alot of good explanations behind why people act the way they do. And how sometimes, a group of victims become an echo chamber of revenge-seeking individuals that has been twisted with malice. I love every second I spent reading the novel. All the footnotes, explanations and nuances are quite well expounded.

I highly recommend this novel. Please read it

I absolutely enjoyed this novel. Let me tell you why... Of course, when you come to read here, most of the time it is to find a nice and relaxing story - not necessarily a simple or always positive, just something to entertain yourself with. As far as romance is concerned, these are mostly light novels, so nobody truly expects something beyond the story itself. In other words, these are mostly single layered novellas with hardly any message other than a romantic feeling. However this novel quite often had some... more>> exquisite sentences or paragraphs, somehow insightful about life and death, human life, society. While the main characters were often so clever, there were a lot of cute moments with the cat, the whole atmosphere of the novel is what kept me reading. The crimes were not too simple and the whole pacing of the story was very elegant. For me the overarching message was something like this:

Spoiler

From one perspective the message is definitely that humans can overcome their circumstances... And I am not talking about material wealth here. I am talking about moral character... the most upright upbringing/ social standing can be just a front and people that seem like despicable swindlers will have the biggest hearts. Many will have pitiful stories, but not many will be able to rise above. Destiny can break people, but it is they themselves who raise their hand to commit a crime... Suffering often tragically explains further suffering, pain and loss may cloud peoples' judgement. It is not easy to do the right thing and it is not easy to reflect and consider. From another perspective, it probably is about trust, considering people deeply... Some will have some dregs of dignity, some will have none, while some shine brightly. Love can absolve and justify things, love can save and soothe.

[collapse]

Read it and make your own judgement... I am curious what others would take away from this novel. For me this story had a lot of taste and after taste. <<less

My God, it is such an intense read! I marathoned this in 2 days!!

Y'know a novel is really good if it can immerse the readers with the emotion in the story! This is one of the few novel that can make me feel the thrills and goosebumps all over from the cases. There are many novels that can make me laugh but rarely there is a novel that can make me pound worryingly at the action part, that can make me curse angrily at a certain villain, that can make... more>> my heart beat rapidly at suspense part like this!!

And the MC-ML pair in this story reminds me of the pair in Earth Is Online because both of this pair a smart & intelligent couples. And I love the ML-Captain Luo as much as I love Major Fu!! He is such an easy-going but reliable, dependable, smart and strong leader and partner!! <<less

The starting works takes a lot of traction, the middle gets better, and the ending is best. As long as you have the attention span to get through at least the first arc, it'll be good XD.

Not for those looking for a light read, or looking to sleep at night...

Very good novel. There is layer upon layer of intrigue. Not for the faint hearted reader. In fact, even though there is a happy ending for the main couple... I still felt gloomy afterwards. Author is creative in portraying the vileness of humans.

Really brilliant. Every character is well thought out and doesn't serve as just props or plot points. Realistic narrative and keeps you engaged. Really loved ML and MC. If you like reading psychological thrillers with romance mixed and not have a plot full of plotholes, definitely go for it. Give it some time, it grows on you

at first kind of struggle reading this cuz I feel something was not right.. and yes, I'm a dumb person, I thought the ML beside fei duo is Tao ran but actually no. It's Luo wenzhou! (So that's why this guy very against TR x FD. XD) I saw some fan art about this and that's why I have some misgivings, I thought Other ML is serious and mature and well... LWZ is not that xD he's shameless, he's loud, he's sometimes made people speechless and want to beat him,... more>> sometimes kind of childish. But He's good police captain, oh and he's perfect match for Fei Duo undoubtedly. Fei Duo is complex chara, maybe his courage is low, but I never yell about him about 'being such a coward' because he has reason (and trauma, though, he himself didn't really realize it), he also very sly and used gentle and soft mask, though that just made people (not girl) want to beat him up. although he can't fight, He also really really smart. So he's NOT useless. Watch their relationship progress from mutual dislike to I tolerate your presence to I care about you (I luv you) The case is fun- no that's a lie, it's thrilling, it made you want to read faster cuz THE MYSTERY! Focus on the case the romance is in between but it made it more sweet, the glimpse of their affection. It's also a pleasant surprise when you thought 'oh no this will be bad' but the author was like 'it's okay! There will no bad things happens (conflict) so I read this all the way without need to recharge with fluff story. Although in their relationship is LWZ who pursue it and he's the one who taking the initiate, it's also gratifying to see Fei Duo open up, because I know that was no easy, anyway good read. <<less

Thank goodness for the cat and his antics! Somehow I missed the pe*ophile tag and wasn't prepared. There are dark themes and the cat gave me a breather. I didn't read it for the BL romance though. It kind of weirds me out that... more>>
Spoiler

the ML first meets the MC on a case when the MC was a kid. I guess true love doesn't recognize age.

[collapse]

Besides the cat, I love how the ML's parents approach the relationship and how they treat the cat.

Spoiler

The mom shaves the cat so that cat has to face the reality that he's big not due to his fluffy fur but because he's overweight... at the same time, they spoil him with imported cat food and snacks!

I love how everything ties together in the end. It's like finally finding out how all the pieces of the puzzle that felt off just fit together.

I love love love the CP's dynamic. I love how Fei Du just doubles down on everything while Luo Wenzhou is firm and self assured, the stability Fei Du needs in his life.

This is very plot-heavy, please mind the tags. And as with Priest novels, romance is not the main focus, although the main couple is pretty romantic in their own quirky way.

5/5

Some books shake up your world. This is one of them ✨

Silent Reading will make you question, wonder, fear, marvel, laugh, cry, dance... Feel a rich plethora of emotions and see the world, your life somewhat differently afterwards - I for one feel more gratitude and compassion than before.

It will show you the many nuances of human nature, across the spectrum, the many paths to ruin and the many towards light.

My words cannot do this book justice - so, I will merely invite anyone who enjoys psychological fiction, crime, mystery,... more>> stories of growth, touching fiction, and slow burn romance, to give this book a try. Try it with patience as it may take time to grasp this world, but once you do, you won't be able to turn back... <<less

On paper, this work would be an utterly perfect read: mystery, slow romance, high tension, enemies to lovers, fantastic writing...!

In reality, I'm damn bored.

The tension the author tries to build between the main pair just does not hit for me at all. It's a cheap trope but I felt way more tension between the love interests and the straight Tao Ran than between Lou Wenzhou and Fei Du and honestly wished Tao Ran had been the MC. '~' The mystery can be riveting and fun at times but is often... more>> just super draggy.

I wish I liked this, but at some point, reading it just became a chore. <<less

My favorite Priest book!

Police history, with a psychological theme and romance.

From the first page everything begins to intertwine, the most macabre and complicated cases seem to have more depth than they appear and soon begins to glimpse a whole conspiracy inside and outside the police, splashing the highest and wealthiest spheres of the country. Our lead police unravel these cases one by one until they can reach the people who pull the strings from the shadows. At the same time, you will be forced to interact with a young acquaintance... more>> from the past, a typical rich child with ego problems.

As time passes, we do not realize the depth of darkness in the city as our protagonists approach. Our policeman will need all his patience and ingenuity because what looked like a spoiled child could be much more complicated.

Our second protagonist will also closely follow the cases that occur in the city although, with other ideas in mind and always trying to stay one step ahead of their own demons.

Without a doubt an intriguing story and with a romance of those who you look forward to being together at the same time that you wish that the protagonists can become sincere and become the sustenance of the other. <<less

This novel has me shaken. I finished it today and I'm still reeling. I genuinely don't remember a time when a book left such an impression on me that I wanted to cry by the end, and not because the ending was unhappy, but because it's over and I'm not ready to say goodbye to these characters.

In a fantasy world where police are actually good guys, the ML Luo Wenzhou and his team would've been the best of their kind. Luo Wenzhou is like an imaginary friend you'd create for... more>> yourself in your childhood. He's selfless, funny and caring, he loves his team and his terrible cat, he is genuinely a good person. His team is unquestioningly loyal to him for a very good reason. They remind me of old-school police dramas like Inspector Rex, where the cops were portrayed as paragons of justice who wanted to help people.

The MC Fei Du is also an amazing character. He's just the right combination of cool, intelligent, powerful, traumatized, lovable and vulnerable. He may not be the most realistic, but he's the type of character you want to read about and root for, and also maybe wrap in a blanket and hide from the world forever. The more you learn about him, the more complex and multi-dimensional he gets.

The author took care to develop the side characters as well. By the end of the novel you can't help but love Tao Ran, Lang Qiao and especially Xiao Haiyang, who goes through a tremendous amount of character growth. In general, there are so many characters in this novel, some are monsters, some are tragic, some are tragic monsters and some are irredeemable psychopaths, but none are boring or flat.

The love between Luo Wenzhou and Fei Du is masterfully woven into the plot, balancing out the main story while at the same time remaining at the heart of it. Their relationship dynamic is simply wonderful, it's extremely touching and really shows how powerful love can be. This love changes them both, especially Fei Du, bringing his character arc to its conclusion in the most satisfying way.

The detective plot is a solid 4. It requires some suspension of disbelief, especially by the end where all the cases are coming together into a single thread, but honestly? Who cares! Crime/mystery novels are rarely the most realistic anyway, and this novel's plot is interesting enough to keep you engaged and questioning who the actual villains are and what their motives could be.

I also want to praise the way the author creates the atmosphere. It's done in such a skillful way that you can almost feel what the characters are feeling, which is a very rare find. I will definitely re-read this novel and check out other novels by the author! <<less

Well-written leads, CP chemistry, and exploration of generational ab*se & trauma. Unfortunately Priest's overly ambitious plot suffers from too much "tell and no show" and an overload of characters (QJJ was nowhere near this confusing) which made the last book rather unenjoyable. Overall a 4/5 but the ending is a 3/5 and takes away from the enjoyability of the story.

LOVE IT! Both the novel and Zhoudu, it was so satisfying from the beginning to the ending!! I wish Pipi would write more extras T.T It went up to the top in my novel list and for now it's my favorite priest work. I'm so glad the LA dropped, it made me put the novel I was reading back then on hold and try this, I regret so much for not trying it any sooner. It was written so soo well! And the amount of research and hard work PiPi... more>> spent on this.. I even tried most of those referred works while reading, it helped understand each case better, how the plot flows, etc. Because of that I really took my time to read it compared to other novels, I even kept referring to MTL and got help from a CN friend because some details are not delivered right in fan TL (no offense, I respect and am grateful towards all the translators out there for their hard work and time, I just happened to love this novel a lot so I wanted exact and perfect details and it's also my first time going this far OTL) and Fei Du I love you sm!!!

Romance is slow burn and for some people it may be inadequate, but that's given for this kinda detective, thriller, mystery novel and imo romance is included in the right amount, any more of it would be disturbing. If you are looking for something of heavy romance I suggest you not to try and give low ratings. <<less

A very nice novel. The plot is good and it's like a massive spider web, everyone and everything's connected!

I feel sad for the innocent victims, truly my heart hurts for them and their back stories. I love the interaction between the main couple. It's just that, I feel that FD's character is very OP, you'll know what I mean once you're done reading the story. The also love the side characters, I think they at least were actually part of the story instead of being a "decoration" or suddely forgotten.

It's... more>> worth reading if you love crime stories with a little romance. I love fatty cat the most! Hahaha! <<less
