Childhood, upbringing, family background, social relations, traumatic experiences…

We keep reviewing and seeking out the motives of criminals, exploring the subtlest emotions driving them. It’s not to put ourselves in their shoes and sympathize, or even forgive them; it’s not to find some reasons to exculpate their crimes; it’s not to kneel down before the so-called “complexity of human nature”; nor to introspect social conflicts, much less to alienate ourselves into monsters.

We just want to have a fair trial – for ourselves and for those who still have hope for the world.

One of the superior storylines I've ever known.. As a crime and investigation fan, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. Worth all the time!

The plot is very intricate. Each case is TOTALLY engaging with good number of twists, reasons and thoughts.

Spoiler

They seem like seperate cases at first and are really solved. Or atleast they think they are but all of them are connected by a master thread which is revealed in the last arcs.

[collapse]

It's not at all annoying but rather even brings out your curiosity. Priest did a very good job writing this!

Coming to romance, it's a slow burn but I'm satisfied. There's a great character growth and consistency. Fei du the sexy brained seductive poison, and the husband material cop Luo wenzhou.

Happy ending.

Overall 9/10

Tho I would've loved to see more romantic and adorable moments <<less

This is a fun thriller with good characters and romance, and on top of that, a very nice translation to read.

This is really awesome, I'm crying of happiness 😭 my heart is so full. This story is an easy read, the translators are great (you can choose whoever translated it) and it was really detailed. It's just kinda hard to understand at first and honestly, I only truly understood it near the end. Though I don't know maybe I'm number and the shock factor is not enough for me but this is good! What's only regrettable is that I didn't keep track of the characters and I read it too... more>> fast so I didn't feel most of it. So I suggest you try keeping track of it to not lose your way ah😉 <<less

The extensive cast of characters requires quite a detailed mapping to keep track of who's who and what is related to what. I thoroughly enjoyed mentally mapping out each character's motives and deducing the behind the scenes maneuvering. It's interesting as the story is told largely from the perspective of a detective with occasional 3rd person views from criminals or victims inserted. Ironically, the author does it in such a way that it can mislead readers into making false conjectures. Nevertheless, I relished how well-paced the plot was and when... more>> everything panned out, when collected information drew insane conclusions along. The intricate plotting and gradual unveiling of the MULTIPLE parties behind each case was so compelling and drew me in. I couldn't help but marvel at how all cases in each volume were interconnected to an overarching massive force. It was an intensive read through-and-through; although there's a somber tone that pervades the novel, the main and supporting characters have such lively and hopeful dispositions that alleviated much of the macabre atmosphere when solving cases. <<less

Beautiful story, I really fell in love with many of the characters. The plot was riveting, there were times where I questioned some parts that I thought would become plotholes, but the author was able to wrap everything up really well into a satisfying ending.

At first I thought Tao Ran was the ML which lead to quite a deal of confusion until things cleared up. The romance took up little of the novel but I feel it was for the best or else it would have distracted from the amazing... more>> main story. I'm a sucker for bittersweet love stories with a happy ending, and this had me in tears many times but I loved every bit of it.

I think I would only re-read this after waiting a few years and forgetting most of the novel, you can't know too much of the story or else it wouldn't be enjoyable. The story does give plenty of foreshadowing and hints at the obvious plotholes so you know something else has got to be going on, but not too much that it spoils the fun, being there in the moment and seeing everything fold out and become clear is a great part of what makes this enjoyable. <<less

You can really tell the effort that went into writing this just from the summary. It sounds like the summary is all about pursuing justice and fairness when judging criminals, (MAJOR SPOILER) ... more>>
Spoiler

and seems like it comes from the perspective of the main characters (who are police and seem like they're the ones pursuing justice), but it is actually written from the perspective of one of the villains in the story.

[collapse]
So the summary won't make sense at first, but coming back after binging the novel for 3 days and nights straight, and rereading the summary afterwards just made me go wow. Also why I wanted to write this review and share my findings haha

Apart from that, I really love the way everyone is given a personality, and how everything is intricately interlinked. This isn't a novel you go into if you're just going to lightly skim - what makes it so good is spotting those small details the author blends in, and then realising what actually happened.

Spoiler

There are a few plot twists (perhaps because I didn't have a keen enough eye like our MC and ML does for those deets), and the novel really builds up the overarching conspiracy quite well.

[collapse]

Unlike what some other reviews have said, the MC and ML are indeed OP, but still within reasonable bounds. When you have someone like Fei Du (ML), who has the genetics and has been brought up like he has... I figure you probably either go crazy or become insane (ly cold-blooded and rational). Fei Du has been studying psychology on his own for many years, so it isn't totally unreasonable for him to be able to get a child to talk when others hadn't been able to - sometimes a different person and approach is required. You find out that he's just a figurehead for the company and doesn't really have to be there >_> He also manipulates his way into getting involved for the first two cases, before being formally involved as a related personnel in the investigations (which he also kind of manipulated his way into if you just read the story properly).
Spoiler

The reason he seems so OP when solving the cases is because it just happens to coincide with what he has been investigating on his own and plotting ever since his mother's su*cide and his father's accident, and he understands a lot of what is going on - and is actually a major player behind the scenes.

[collapse]

One question I do have is how
Spoiler

the villains have so many firearms... pretty sure you'd need to be authorised and stuff to be able to obtain them in China, but towards the end, there's so many gunfights and explosions going on.

[collapse]

I've never heard of Priest before, but seeing other's high praise of them, and being convinced of their writing abilities after this novel, I will end this review here to check out their other novels. :) <<less

Extremely intricate plot with a vibrant cast.

Main CP is basically Enemies to Lovers. They both learn to understand and then support each other which is always wonderful. They also communicate like the adults they are which is A+. This novel also has the unique set up that both MC and ML already know each other and don't like each other, right from the beginning, until things start changing.

The crimes being solved are very graphic and intricate. I'm honestly not that fond of graphic crime stories but this kept it's... more>> focus on trying to solve the crimes and not just on the gore/violence to shock the audience.

Things in the beginning are not what they seem so like other reviews, I would recommend reading a few chapters before deciding. Not all novels have a good ending but this one ends near perfect. If you love crime and/or mystery+ character development then this novel is a good choice.

People have different tastes, so of course there are going to be dislikes (and that's okay). But there's a difference in just disliking something, criticizing a story because of structure, etc. And then there's straight up not even reading properly, making assumptions and then getting angry because of your own assumptions.

MC has a degree in Psychology. He's written actual books on the subject. And one of the most liked reviews is a complaint about MC correctly psycho-analyzing a child. And he's not helping the police for the lols. There are pretty obvious plot-related reasons. I can't comment on 'MC is too OP' without spoilers, but again there's a difference between being OP and playing to your strengths. <<less

10/10 excellent writing, characters, plot, and romance.

Mo Du is intricate and complex in both its plot line and its characters. Priest will astonish you in how she connects everything together while throwing plot twists your way. I highly recommend taking notes on every character that appears while reading, so that you don't get lost as the cast gets bigger with every case investigated.

The psychological aspect of the novel was the best part of reading. Priest handling of psychology is what makes this novel one of my favorites.

However, even with Mo... more>> Du's convoluted web of a plot, it doesn't stop Priest from adding in comedic aspects throughout the story that will make you laugh, and I just really love that.

The romance has one of the best and most realistic developments I've read. Every moment our two main characters share together will have you at the edge of your seat.

Fei Du: our main character since he's the driving force of the plot, but despite him being the protagonist, the novel is often told from the main lead, Luo Wenzhou's POV. Fei Du is a really enjoyable character. He's incredibly intelligent, confident, shameless, a huge flirt, a playboy, openly bis**ual/pans*xual (his sexuality is just described as "interested in humans") and overall really sexy. He's lived through a traumatic childhood and has hemophobia (a fear of blood). His mother committed su*cide when he was a 14/15-year-old teenager, but for reasons unknown he doesn't believe it to be a su*cide. His father is in a comatose state due to a car accident that happened when Fei Du was eighteen.
Spoiler

When Fei Du found his mother's dead body, she had the song "you raise me up" playing and through the story, Fei Du will have this song be playing on loop. Whether it's on his car radio or his phone ringtone, this is the first indication of his self-destructive tendencies.

[collapse]
Fei Du's past is shrouded in the mystery, and throughout the story you will be unraveling what happened to him.

Luo Wenzhou: our main lead and most of the story will be narrated from his POV. Luo Wenzhou is the captain of the criminal Investigation unit and through the books, he will be investigating a series of inter-connected crimes with his investigation team and Fei Du. He's smart, shameless, can be just as much a flirt as Fei Du if he wants to be, openly gay and confident about it, very much husband material, and overall like Fei Du he is also very sexy. Seven years prior to volume 1, Luo Wenzhou was the one in charge of the investigation on the death of Fei Du's mother and deemed it to be a su*cide, hence Fei Du's animosity towards him in the beginning of the story, as he still doesn't believe his mother's death to be a su*cide. Luo Wenzhou is simultaneously wary of Fei Du and also h**ny for him, he's complicated like that. What really gets to me about Luo Wenzhou is that he has his character development happen seven years prior to the story. The stability in his character throughout the books is pivotal for him to maintain a healthy relationship with Fei Du who has considerably a lot of emotional baggage.

Tao Ran: Luo Wenzhou's best friend since high school and kinda of a guardian to Fei Du. Along with Luo Wenzhou, he was also on the investigation team on the death of Fei Du's mother. He often took care of Fei Du even after the investigation had ended. Both Fei Du and Luo Wenzhou had a crush on him, but gave up relatively quickly in Volume 1 after seeing how straight he was lol. My one complaint in Mo Du is Tao Ran's lack of role in the climax despite the importance his character likely had in Fei Du's life.

Lang Qiao and Xiao Haiyang: part of luo wenzhou's investigation team. Both of them are really cute.

Luo Yiguo: Luo Wenzhou's cat. This cat has characterization that rivals the cast lol

I highly recommend this novel, especially with the novel translations already being completed. It's already on the page but adding the link to read here again: edanglarstranslations. Com/modu <<less

9.6/10

I love crime thriller series. And this one is particularly the novel that made a big fan of Priest.

Okay, so the first volume, honestly it did feel a little slow to me, it wasn't anything I have not watched or seen, but the first volume was more about forming the base of the whole story and world building.

... more>> The second volume is the one that got me hooked! This case was so interesting and the plot twist was totally unexpected. But what more, I loved the third volume even better.

For me, the story didn't have a low point, the interest I had in this novel just kept rising. Fifth volume has to be my favourite one and I loved the finale of this novel so much ;_;

The entertainment value is 10/10

The ML is my favourite character here! And I know Fei Du as ML is a way too smart, but that's what made him so charming for me. If you have ever watched signal, one of the three main characters, the youngest one is actually the criminal profiler, something Fei Du does too. Age doesn't have anything to do with the intelligence.

Age has something to do with wisdom & experience, and that's what makes Luo Wenzhou, our MC, the team captain. Not just him, even Tao Ran. You'll see how responsible they are, specially LWZ, never for a moment did he make a decision hastily. No matter how bad the situation gets, he always thought about it calmly first and tried to make his juniors feel less nervous too.

My favourite side character from police team has to be Xiao Haiyang. His photographic memory and general problem solving skills! He is amazing. He is as intelligent as Fei Du but in a different way. Lang Qiao stole my heart with her dependency and elder sister image, and Tao Ran's humanity!! Together as a team, these four were perfectly balanced if you see it in this way. You don't become a police officer just by being intelligent, a lot other things count too, together they were the best criminal investigation team.

Rest depends on how you take it. For me this novel has been one of the best crime thriller media I ever consumed!! <<less

MC Fei Du x ML Lou Wenzhou - Better than a 4 but not quite a 5. A crime novel with an interesting backstory where all the pieces fit together nicely. The characters both bad and good seem kind of one dimensional and bland. Each crime arc can get a tad convoluted, which can leave the reader fatigue. This is Priest, so prepare for slow burn and fade to black. Ultimately a HE.

Very good story !

i was hooked by the investigations of each case and by the mystery behind the whole truth. My God, it was terrifying !

The characters are really human-like, no perfection, no Mary-sue... with the same fears and interrogations we all have. I liked the evolution of the relationship from the main couple and their personalities, really life like.

For me one of the best Priest's work (with Imperfection !)

Thanks for the translation !

One of the most amazing books I've ever read. The depth and complexity of the plot, the wonderful characterization of even minor characters, the pacing... An excellent, almost poetic translation by E. Danglars. I will forever wonder to what extent does the current shape of the novel owe to the translator.

OH MY GOOD GOD I LOVE THIS SO MUCH

I'D DIE FOR WENZHOU AND FEI DU

I haven't finished it yet, but the story has been incredible, and I'm just so happy I read this because this really has been a delight, yes the plot is a little difficult to understand sometimes, and yes it's a little complicated, it takes a while to understand completely sometimes, but it's truly a masterpiece, and goodness Fei Du and Luo Wenzhou is just YES help indeed I love them so much I want to sob... more>> and laugh and scream or something, anyways, when my brain decides to actually function I'll try to do a more coherent review I literally just got an account to ramble about how much I love this

LOVE IT!!! Awesome plot and cute ass characters. Seems nice and everything but I really want to cuddle FeiDu so much. I love how his character has so many layers. Like even after LuoWenZhou peels one after another, there's always one more. Complex and interesting plot to keep me super enthu throughout.

I actually read this novel twice already and this is my third time. Reason because this novel is too good and I can't remember the whole plot even after reading it twice (cause it's a little very complicated but... more>> good)

Would definitely read it again after some time thoughhh. And can I just say I really love FeiDu sooooooo much!! <<less

Just logged in to give this top masterpiece 5 stars. Its one of the best priest works I have read. I love her novels they are super interesting, My eyes were glued and I was in anxiety for these past few days due to plot, that's truly interesting. Romance and plot are well balanced. They are going together you dont have to wait for sweet moments, it'll be thrown into your face suddenly. Haha I loved their interactions. Wenzhou is a husband material, he's strong and loves our President fei... more>> to the moon and back. I admire how he is patient towards fei. And Fei du is my Cool Genius baby darling, the way he's portrayed I can imagine a handsome man with long hair wearing glasses oh my God im in love uwuwuwuwu.

And my favourite one is Lou Yigou. This cat breaks and is fierce. I love Their fights hahaha. The Side characters are bunch of cool criminal police officers, sometimes I feel pity the way they work like dogs. The characters are well written, the story is amazing (its super amazing (a little higher) (sorry I running out of words that can describe this masterpiece)

Finished reading volume 2.

Checked all the chapters available, there's a translator who bundle whole novel per volume (5 volumes + epilogue).

Crime psychology novel which engaged readers to think and try solving the cases. It's not hard to read, just the romance was slow 😅.

I've got the complete epub on my reader app, will continue later.
