Callius von Jervain.

A character who dies no matter what he does. A character who falls into a forced choice route where he can only die, no matter his choices up to that point. However, there is a single route where the character can live and play the game.

And I have to carve out that route somehow.

Because I’ve become Callius von Jervain in the game.

It's extremely ret*rded when you think about the worldbuilding deeply but I'm willing to ignore it just to enjoy the novel for the basic popcorn tier story it is. It doesn't deserve the braincells I need to waste for me to think about it.

The MC is your generic cold and calculating OP MC that somehow pulls something out of his ass when he's about to lose. The story is just the MC trying his hardest to survive because his talent is tr*sh so he needs to grab as many opportunities... more>> he can to grow stronger for future events. The gods in this world is absolutely ridiculous because they represent different types of weapons. No wonder the setting is a medieval shithole.

Translation is pretty good tho.

It's okay but doesn't deserve this high of a rating.

I admit I only read abit and it’s personally not for me, however I still did want to give my 2cents in.

First is the translation, they did an amazing job, but like one reviewer said, they chose a safer generic route instead of stylising (rewriting it to fit English lanuage). So a lot of the descriptions sometimes don’t fit for the concept they’re trying to explain.
Spoiler

”He looked like a weasel, but his swordsmanship was very honest. Just stab and hit. An honest swordsmanship without any finesse.” I think they could’ve switch it to straightforward, honest is just a tad odd in this. Or even just change the meaning all together to fit such as ‘simple’ or ‘rough’.

[collapse]

Overall, it’s not for me but I do think the concept of this story is worth giving it a try. Just take your time reading the first two chapters, it’s abit of an information dump towards the second chapter.

After reading so many novels, Chapter 1 rarely leaves any impression on me now. However, this novel did just that. The plot is very intriguing! The title does make so much sense from the get go. The MC is okay so far, in a sense he's a bit of an a**hole, but an as*hole with bottom line which is just right for these kind of dark novels imo.

Overall, I would highly recommend this novel! If the low chapter amount bothers you, then at least put this in your to read... more>> list. Let's encourage TL-nim to pump more chapters out! <<less

This is a great novels so far but what I want to write about is the tone and world building of the story because I think that's what it gets the most right. A dark story about religious battles a world where people kill each other to turn them into swords. A interesting concept reminiscent of stories like those of the souls games most specifically demons souls and berserk.

The concept of a pilgrims moving from battlefield to battlefield killing each other to forge the greatest sword is an amazing idea... more>> and it fills out the world so much. It creates a desolate feeling to the world. You can tell from this story more than most that this is a dog eat dog world. A hopeless environment that you would never want to be in and this is portrayed by all of the minor characters. The only people who don't see their world as a cruel dark place are the ignorant or strong.

It creates this tone that a lot of isekai stories don't have. It makes it more of a fleshed out world without really having to describe much. It takes a lot more from dark fantasy than the typical videogame fantasy. Just breaking from the mold in an uncommon way.

I want the author to continue reaching into this tone, the story doesn't need to be lighthearted in any way and if the author keeps this going it will be truly great. <<less

It's really hard to rate this novel, because I really liked it at some point, but now it's just...

    • World Building
World building is cool, different religions each worshiping different weapon is an interesting concept. It was definitely something that initially got me into reading this novel.

    • Story
Story is decent, it's basically a race war, but with different weapons instead of skin colors, although it became complete bullsh*t near the end.

    • Characters
They are there, however there isn't much of them, after I came back after dropping it at some point, I couldn't remember who most characters were. It's not that they are all bad, because characters like Mc's teacher, Lutheon and Emily were interesting and I wish there was more of them. If only there was more about Emily and her relationship with MC, instead of MC just visiting her once every 3 years and leaving to who knows where.

Spoiler

Even more so when MC finds out that Emily's mother is alive, at no point in time do we get to see what she thinks about all of this. Why is there no emotional conflict? Why is there no pov change to see what Emily thinks about the fact that: her father, who didn't know Emily even existed for 12 years of Emily's life and when he found out, he just left for another country for another 3 years and then he came back with Emily's supposedly dead mother and left again soon after...

And what about Emily's mother? What does she thinks? She has no memories before going to empire and now she finds out she has a 15 year old daughter with her country's enemy? Why does this novel always skip all and any emotional conflict with the excuse of: MC has to do the right thing, so now he's going to some random faraway place who knows where...

It really feels like this novel is skipping any emotional conflict and growth for characters. Emily's mother reveal was immediately followed with "3 moths later". Even after they arrived and met Emily, it wasn't even MC who told them they were mother and daughter. It was Mc's father who told them when MC was unconscious so we didn't even get to see it. After that there were a few short conversations about it before it was completely sidelined.

[collapse]

    • Main Character
It feels like he has no reaction to anything, some stuff that that happens should really make him emotional. It just feels like he's edgy for the sake of being edgy. On one side MC feels like he has no character whatsoever and on the other he just seems like bad person.

Spoiler

When he finds out he has a daughter, he just leaves her alone most of the time, he doesn't hug her, doesn't even tell her he cares for her. I understand it's a surprise to find out he suddenly has a kid, but can't he take some time to talk with her? Ask her how she feels? It really made me feel bad for the kid.

[collapse]

    • Romance?
Why is there even a harem if MC is not gonna end up with anyone... Romance in this novel is just straight awful, I think there are like 4 or 5 girls in love with MC and they appear like once every 50 chapters or so and most of the time and don't even have much dialog. So why is this a harem? Why not just concentrate on one FL and really build her character and story well?? Why have those girls be in love with MC, only for MC to reject them, because he's a "cool loner" and a "pilgrim that has to walk alone" and such??? What does that even mean?

    • Conclusion
Overall, this novel started really well. It was interesting at the beginning, but as it kept going I ended up liking it less and less.

There is a particular review here I find fascinating.

I will say that this story is doing what it was designed to do well. It's hitting beats, getting twists, and throwing the reader along the path with a fun pace with frequent diversions and field trips.

This is a theme park ride, and one reader decided to wax poetic about the depths of that experience.

This is an illusion and like all illusions it only shows the truth, that we fear death and that we enjoy the thrill of a cheated experience where... more>> we throw those emotions at ourselves without any of the dangers.

This reader sees the intention of the ride, to thrill entertain and to spark light in dismal places.

The reviewer wanted a philosophical awakening that only comes within the aperture of design and of philosophy.

Create and you will know why things were shed for the creation. Some things are cut for time, other's for the burden of utility to a story.

This one is efficient fun, and a joy. The author didn't succeed for that reviewer, and that's a shame... because I can see the greed in that review. That review shows a mind that has not yet been able to embrace simple joys for a while. In a source they probably only found treasures, they've lost any of the gleam on the plastic looking coin.

In life you find that a break is necessary for you to appreciate the wonder and passions you lost to time. It's not anything to be ashamed of, its simply the way of many things. It's not something I know how it works or why, just that it often does.

Perspectives can shift for a variety of reasons, but time is one that will almost always weather you into a new position of one. If not time, I expect some other force necessary to appease such a reviewer.

Jack I hope your flame warms the world, before it wears you down. You're a good egg. <<less

This is one of those books that I have been following along for years now. So I have a lot of good memories associated with it. Thus my review may be biased.

The book is Korean, so you will have cliches like the MC is so handsome, so elegant and so perfect. That part may irk veteran readers a bit.

Spoiler

My favourite part in this novel was the interaction between the MC and his daughter. It was bittersweet and brought a warm smile to my face. And of course, the first chapter of this book and the whole concept of sword corpses fascinated me.

This novel was the first of its genre among the English translated Korean novels in this site. So I hope some of you can enjoy reading this book as much as I did! Cheers! <<less

The problem with these types of novels is the balance between the author knowing everything and treating everything like a game and creating some sort of tension.

It's not really fun watching an author being omnisicent and knowing every character inside and out. Once the author treats each character like an NPC, the reader does too, and the writing definitely shows. All of the characters are written so poorly, and Bruns is a perfect example. Bruns tries to trick our MC, and as a result the MC kills his entire gang... more>> and puts Bruns on a leash. The fact that Bruns becomes 100% loyal like a dog from that is insane. Of course there are others, like his instructor and teacher not really feeling like a real character at all, but that is what it is. There's absolutely no investment into the side character development and none of the characters feel like they belong.

Then is the actual fighting. It's a joke since the MC always has some OP ability at hand, and rather there being any actual descriptions of the fight, it's just him blasting the enemy with some OP hidden sword technique or something. Plus, there's the cheat ability of gaining permanent stat increases from swords that apparently no one else can do. All I can say is to stray far from this novel <<less

The novel is about the MC doing a pilgrimage trying to save his dying country. The thing is, the MC is actually one of the writers for the game he isekai'ed in, including the character he possessed.

The novel is overall very well written, especially the battles and interactions. But honestly the novel really starts to get good once he leaves his starting country and starts an actual pilgrimage.

It is very similar to "The tr*sh of the Count Family" with a mix of "The Villain Wants to Live " sprinkle in here and there. Oh and it reminds me of "The Amber Sword" too when it comes to the situation of the politic and the Kingdom the MC is in.

Basically, the MC transmigrated into a world that he helps created and now he is trying his best to survive while also changing the world. The MC is still affected by the original body soul and past who was... more>> a total lunatic as*hole which is in total contrast to how he is originally but not as extreme as "The Villain Wants to Live ".

It has everything that I like from a novel. Politic, life and death battle, romance, family drama, and struggling MC fighting against the world weak to strong from nobody to badass last boss so 9/10. The problem is that the update is super slow, like less than once a week sometimes once a month and idk how good it will be at later chapter so I didn't give it a perfect score yet. <<less

A pretty cliche story of an OP protagonist going into a body of a villain, but the worldbuilding is very interesting.

Enjoyable and somewhat different from the usual fare of KR reincarnation into a game due to the MC actions being under the influence/consequences of what the original character did. It feels like the MC has lived in the world and became part of it compared to other novels where some leads feel somewhat detached from the world they find themselves in.

Meh it's alright. It has a lot of elements I like and does stuff with tropes and such I wish other novels would do. But it also feels like somethings missing at times. For example action scenes or transitions like somethings been skipped over. Overall has boring and some quite entertaining chapters. Not as good as many think but I don't regret reading it. Had some good and funny moments.

First the short review. It is definitely worth reading this novel.

Now to the longer answer. The world building of the novel is pretty interesting and it brings a few fresh ideas and twists. Personally I have to say that I like the characters, but they can be a bit flat at times. This is also true for our main character but nethertheless they have enough character so that they are interesting enough.

Another point on the plus side is the power system of this world. It's unique, but intuitive enough that... more>> you can accept and like it. Another important aspect was the humor. It is pretty dark at times, but this is just the way I love it.

Also the translation is very well done. It gives you a nice flow while you are reading. While I had to read a few descriptions more than once it, it is pleasing all in all.

So if anyone ever reads this comment to this point. Just give it a chance and I think that you will be like me and don't want to stop. <<less

Good novel so far, I like the pacing so far. Dialogue reminds me of Master Hunter K, it's quick and to the point, but still has some character to it. The novel has a lot of potential and I like how slowly they are introducing new powers and elements into the novel, while still keeping it interesting.

I was quite expectant to read this considering all the praise from the reviews and the high ratings but as I've read it, this isn't that special. The setting is the usual fantasy setting but with a little tweaks and the characters aren't that special in my opinion, even the MC. In fact, he even started to annoy me. As others have pointed out, MC is quite a cold and calculating scoundrel but that isn't my gripe about him. It is about him having quite the short temper while purposely... more>> not giving a f*ck about anything that isn't about his survival or strengthening himself. By chapter 20, I've been bored of reading about his monologues that basically focuses about those two things every damn time. I also don't like the fact that MC seems to be ignoring the implications of the previous Callius's misdeeds by saying to himself that it wasn't really him that did it (as if that would be enough to avoid those problems). If it wasn't for a certain revelation from the reviews I would have dropped this by now.

Spoiler

So despite only being on chapter 25, I decided to skip until the revelation that Emily was actually Callius's daughter to see how he'd react. Fortunately for me, it revealed a side of him other than an MC hell-bent on survival and it was honestly refreshing. In addition, he finally acknowledged that this isn't something he should ignore just because it was the cause of the original Callius's actions and not his. I'm looking forward to how this father-daughter relationship develops since this is incredibly rare unless it is the main focus of a novel.

[collapse]

As for the action, it is nothing remarkable as of now considering that the opponents aren't the type to be the very intimidating villains while what leads up to the fights are nothing special.

Spoiler

One of the fights was against a another sword pilgrim named Esther and the MC had almost died against her. But this fight only started because the original Callius had bullied her so much that she started to hate the MC enough to kill him. In addition, I expect some mid fight power-ups in future fights considering the MC has a skill in which he could grow stronger when he is about to die. In fact, he only won against Esther because of that skill

[collapse]

Honestly there isn't that much to consider remarkable in this novel but it at least had enough interesting things to keep me reading for now.

Edit: Welp, looks like I judged the fights in this novel too early.
Spoiler

As the fights against the orc army was actually amazing.

I like the world a lot. It's very unique, and I want to know more about it. It was enough to make me read the mtl, if that says anything.

It does have its fare share of negatives though. The biggest is probably how the MC will always deus ex machina his way out of critical situations instead of something like outsmarting the enemy or using something to his advantage. His form of deus ex machina doesn't change at all either. Of the last 4 fights where he almost died, 3... more>> out of the 4 was turned around
Spoiler

when he gained sudden enlightenment and unlocked a new move of his sword art.

[collapse]

Spoiler

I wasn't a fan of having a crazed group of lovesick mu*derous women chasing him around as well, but I will give it the benefit of the doubt for now since it was in the mtl. Maybe the translation will make it less painful and completely out of place. I doubt it though.

[collapse]

It's no masterpiece, but it's worth reading if you're looking for a fantasy where you don't need to think too much, while also avoiding the feel of your brain turning into mush. <<less

From the beginning it was a dark story but it wasn't edgy or wanted to that type, so I liked it.

I would have rate it 8/10

But the ending was disappointing for me, the ending let me down maybe because I hate open endings with passion.

Spoiler

specially because there was no closure with Emily, if he at least had closer with his daughter, the ending wont have be disappointing to me.

[collapse]

So I would give this novel 5.5 or 6.2/10 because of ending, if not for ending its 8/10.

As for this site 3.4 (since I can't I give point in nu so generously will I give it 4, but it's not 4/5 for me because of ending)

Overall I would say it's a readable story <<less

Quite the unique novel.

The MC transmigrates into a character, Callius, from a game he wrote the scenario about. The problem is he set up this character as someone who sacrifices himself at some point as per his Noblesse oblige. He set up only one survival route for this character only because of a reason you will find out early in the novel.

The world is quite dependent on gods as a lot of people depend on their 'gifts'. The different gods have different weapons and our protagonist is a pilgrim of... more>> the Church of the Sword God. All gods give their believers the ability to turn corpses of dead humans to their chosen weapon, swords in the case of the god the MC believes in. This was originally done as a noble act of granting the requests of dead people and then sending them back to god, but as time passed people grew obsessed with the power strong swords give. The swords have different grades based on potential, abilities, strength and etc. Depending on the person. A pilgrim is basically a "trainee" who sets off on a journey to find his own sword

The other characters have their own motivations and the novel is rich in terms of interesting character backstories.

As for Callius himself, he is a protagonist I very much enjoy reading about. The person who transmigrated is a calm person, enough he could be called apathetic, but this slowly changes over time as he meets Emily, his supposed younger sister. He is also influenced by the OG Callius who is a womanizer, yet takes nobility more seriously than anyone. Oh, he also has daddy issues, which are quite justified though lol.

Spoiler

So it turns out Emily is actually his daugther he had made when he was 14 (now he is 26 btw). And I cannot stress how quickly she became my favorite character. I can't wait for more awkward yet cute interactions between her and Callius.
