Amamiya Hiroto is unlucky. His life consisted of misfortune after misfortune, culminating in an unlucky death during an incident on a school boat trip, trying to save a girl he barely knew. After death, he met a god of reincarnation who requested that the hundred or so dead passengers—one of them being the girl he tried in vain to save—be reincarnated into another world.

Yet a series of unfortunate events forced Hiroto to reincarnate with even less luck than before, starting with nothing but a tremendous amount of Mana. His second life, far worse than his first, came to a cruel end.

However, upon meeting the god a second time, he was informed that there would be yet another reincarnation—one that had already been set in motion and could not be stopped. Not wanting Hiroto to live long, the god cursed him before he was reborn in the hopes that he would either die quickly or commit su*cide.

Hiroto was reborn once more as a half-Vampire, half-Dark Elf. A Dhampir. Not wanting a fourth life, he is determined to live this third life with the only things remaining from his previous lives—death-attribute magic and his enormous Mana pool.

I had high expetations, as there was several things that makes sense and isn't found in other books, kinda the power of low-level undead. If they are ordinary, with no special caracteristics or a lot of mana, then is only natural that they are weaker than humans. They are just a bit bones without lots of mana or skills.

Since the MC has a lot of mana (tens of thousands the amount of a top class mage), he could just make undead of every damn bone he founds on the ground,... more>> buff them, create some golems that he makes easily to block for them and use the wave tatic like a REAL necromancer to levelup some of his undead, get rid of the weakests and gather more corpses. Or since he got the title of some race king, use the bones of their prey to make undead. But no, he got on his hands 4 very high level corpses (the undead gets stronger if with powerful corpses) and used them to NOTHING, he obey the orders of the race he "rules" like a good child (or good s*ave) and makes sauce with his free time.

Moreover, when after soooooo much trouble he finally gets magic-oriented job, which greatly improves his progress with magic skills, he starts to practice corporal combat. And he even says that he is worried because he is weak and some strong guys might want to kill them. WELL, WHY THE HELL HE IS WEAK? NO IDEA.

The MC isn't a necromancer, he is a kid playing with bones.

He is not a race's king, he helps them with no return and listen wharever they say. They even order him how to take bath, for god's sake.

And finally, his real curse aren't those that some god gave him. It's his s*upidity.

I was in real high expetations for a decent necromancer's story at the beginning. Dammit. <<less

There are people who like it, people who don't. I think it's a good serie and people should try it to see if it suits them or not, rather than not even reading it based on negative reviews.

It starts a bit dark but after it becomes more like a slow pace country/power building serie.

I enjoy the character and I want to see where the story will go. But I can understand that some people would be disappointed with the lack of tension, or rather the absence of "risk" for the... more>> characters. That's the kind of feel-good story where main characters won't die. Or maybe just one if the author wants to be dramatic. It's a bit of a shame, since it reduces the tension but I got attached to all the characters evolving around the hero, so I am fine with it. <<less

I, for one, am enjoying this very much. One of the better isekai stories in my opinion. The writing and translation are good and the story itself is pretty interesting. I'm glad I gave it a try instead of brushing it off because I thought it wouldn't suit my tastes.

If I had to say my problems with it, then maybe that there are too many women characters falling for our shota and it's hard to keep track of them all. Can't decide whether I want the pacing to stay the... more>> same or go faster either, but all in all it's a good novel.

And to people who are complaining about his punishment for the first village and dropped it because of that:

Spoiler

???

Do you want the MC to die??? He's a freaking infant who is greatly hindered by that as*hole god Rodcorte from growing more powerful and basically cursed him with a shitty life of bad luck and misfortune, so much so he'd rather kill himself than live.

Sure, he can slaughter the village. He wanted to too.

But what about after?? What about Priest Gordon and Heinz who are WAY stronger than him right now?? Who are a HUGE threat to his life???

Make a mysterious event happen => have some people investigate but have no clue about what happened = Life is safe for now, revenge carried out

Make mysterious event happen that kills people => have people-- STRONG people, people out of his power league right now-- hunt him down ruthlessly BECAUSE he killed a WHOLE town of people => revenge carried out, but large chance that he'll die and just end up face to face with Rodcorte again.

He had to hide from Gordon for two months living on earthworms and shit, what makes you even remotely think that he can just arrogantly kill as he pleases and get away with it scot free???

Not to mention, the more attention he garners, the higher up the people noticing him will be ranked. He did get noticed by gods further on, but that was when he had already built a base for himself and had made allies. He'd have to face against evil vampires following evil gods who can sic 6000 elite soldiers on them + vampire subordinates with super strength and speed and thousands of years of life and fighting experience while he's not even 1 year old yet, you know?? If you think you could survive that as a baby who just started out in the world less than a year ago, then I'd like to see you try. =_=

No point in carrying out revenge if they'll end up taking you down with them. That's not revenge, that's just s*upid.

[collapse]

Spineless MCs are a thing, but it's better than idiot MCs who don't think of consequences and do something outrageous to draw dangerous amounts of attention to them when they're severely underpowered and can't contend on the global scale yet. <<less

Death Mage is a story with a dark setting. Van (MC) experienced many tragic events in his lives. This would make the story centered on "REVENGE, but even though Van lived a very harsh life and pursue revenge, he still have the value of being a human. Van pursues revenge not only for his mother but also for his own happiness.

This story is how Van do many things that can be either be judge as evil or good for the sake of the happiness of those around him which for... more>> his own happiness. This makes the novel different from those stories and MC that chose the path of revenge, as those stories only have a worth because on how the enemies met their demise. This one is a story on how Van and others live peacefully in a world where they are different and persecuted, and how they will fight for that goal.

Personally I loved this story, as revenge stories with cruel protagonist are becoming more common. Though it sounds like naive, I like how the characters struggles in walking on their own path in a world that full of despair.

Edit: People who feel dissapointed about how the MC didn't become a madmen and f**king kill all the people related to his target, then THIS NOVEL WILL NOT QUENCH YOUR THIRST FOR REVENGE. In Van's second life, when he became a monster, he didn't attacked unrelated people (experiment subjects). It means that he doesn't have an aggressive nature, which I think he got from his first life from ab*se. HE PRIORITIZE HIS HAPPINESS OVER HIS VENGEANCE. He's not like the people who think "people who ab*se me should be punish by me". When her mother was burned, he's not as s*upid as f**k to kill all the people there just because they discriminate her mother, he's not a kind of MC that thinks "I'm OP and have a cool death powers, let's provoke the adventurers in the town for killing my mama" <<less

To the guy saying that MC is kind, you simply have not read enough. MC literally has maxed out a skill that made him into someone with a f*cked up sense of the world.

On a later chapter, he met one of his mother's killers and guess what the kind MC did? He created a dungeon due to his mental breakdown and it's sole purpose is to kill the guy he met.

MC doesn't hesitate to kill those who poses threat on him. It's unfair that some people judges a novel and they've only read a couple of chapters.

So far, I could say about this novel is very good to read. There are times where the story goes to a dark and tragedy atmosphere occurred to a better place yet with challenges. The World building is explained through development progress that can be understood easily.

The Characters are modest or perhaps unique to a certain degree. But as far, the journey is still long considering that the MC having quite number of objective to achieve, together with his own problem to be solved.

In conclusion, its exciting and fun to... more>> read this novel.

Aside from overabundance of info dumps about food and cooking, the story is actually good. The revenge and betrayal tag doesn't wear off even past the latest chapters (unlike a certain story... Shiel- *cough cough* Hero). Please don't lump this story with that tr*sh. The plot is slow but it certainly is entertaining.

It's been very interesting so far.

At the beginning the MC got hunted by humans so he grew a hate for poeple but he forgot that after a couple of chaps

The cooking parts are just pain in the ass, MC is the mr. Right guy (selfless as hell) that u can find in most of the japanese novels, plot armor thick as a montain, clichè everywhere, the villains are just bad, random abilities sprout everywhere, of course MC has some random bullsh*t like 200 million of mana and 9053 active abilities and the beginning of the varius arc of the story are just painful For example:
Spoiler

the MC has just managed to repel a wave of invaders from his city, so what's the first thinghe does? Obviusly he go to a nearby kingdom to register to an adventurer guild becouse no reason at all and in the meantime he save villages from disease and the monsters while helping them from the oppressing empire. So here we go with an super original adventurer arc-saving villages from monsters forced as hell

Well it was a good web novel so far, if you read the others review but don't know if you should read or not read this:

in the start is really dark but you will understand that it's not about the revenge that Van history is all about, of course he will kill the guys that tortured and killed his mother if he meets them but in the start he make it really clear that he just want to be happy and live in the luxury (eat good stuff and... more>> buy good clothes, not jewel or the likes his luxury is cheap) so he has bad luck so he need to work hard to compensate, that is what is all about, and some people might say that he should kill every one of the city that killed his mother, but he punished them quite a lot, well he did it in a flashy way so it's the opposite of what he should do but no one will connect a baby half vampire-dark elf with what he did you know.... what he did is more secure than a massacre of a whole city. <<less

First of all, this story is great. I mean it has bigger potential. But like many other japanase MC got huge personality problem. He is the biggest hypocrite in this novel and he is naive, very naive, granted he did not have human interaction in his second life, and just horrible family.

But still, my biggest turn off for this novel is MC age. He is not even ten year old when he is out adventuring, he still just baby (infant) but with a teenager personality. It's PW all over again.

Overall... more>> it's a good read but beware MC age and inferiority complex because horrible past <<less

Definitely one of the better isekai stories

Now, if you're reading this, you're probably already familiar with isekai tropes (guy died, reincarnated/transported into another world with myriad of blessings and cheat powers, gathers harem, etc, etc)

Now, it's common to give a spin to the initial formula. In this, the guy (Hiroto) due to a mistake reincarnated with only a high amount of mana, but in a ridiculously bad circumstances the gift turned into a curse as he becomes no more than a lab rat. When the second reincarnation happens he... more>> swore revenge to his classmates who killed him in the second life (and has myriad blessings unlike his), and to prevent that happens God actually gave him a curse hoping him to kill himself ASAP.

Form this point, it can easily turns into another isekai

type story where it's basically revenge fantasy (like Nidome no Yuusha or a few others). The first few chapters support this as he is born to a very persecuted race, and bad things happen to him again.

Yet he does not let hatred completely consume him. Eventually, with his death magic power he gathers a collection of vassals and acquaintances of a certain kind (Undeads, mostly). What is most appealing here that makes it better than most is that his vassals, though loyal to him, does not fall into one note characters with typical hero worship isekai stories usually do. At least, not the inner circle. They feel like actual supporting characters and closer to surrogate family, teaching him of the ways of the world, and reprimanding him when he does wrong. When they asked him what does he really want and he answers with "be happy" it struck a chord with me, reminding of the old adage "the best revenge is a life well-lived." He also does not hesitate to tell about his situation (all of it, including the reincarnation thing) that makes their relationships is not one-sided/imbalanced like most other isekai stories

At this point of the review, he's still collecting vassals, so to speak, so the jury's still out on the overall direction of the story, but here's hoping it goes somewhere nice.

Another good point of the series is that it does worldbuilding decently, giving us information step-by-step as it becomes relevant to the story and not with inelegant exposition. It also does not fall into the garbled wall-of-text trap where the "story" is exploring the RPG mechanics of the world step-by-step for thousands of words.

The reason why I did not give it the best score possible is that while it did not do anything bad, it does not particularly do something great either, and still fall to the typical isekai story progression of "things happening" and "going with the flow" (which I guess is kinda inevitable for web-serialized stories), and also some hints of harem (which I do not think as particularly negative because the relationships are much healthier as it's based on trust instead of hero worship)

TL:DR

Recommended, highly so for those who enjoy isekai type stories <<less

Someone else already said this, but this issue is they abandon the character they built up at the start. You get to see all the fuel for revenge and a brutal character, but that goes poof very quickly.

Going through my old bookmarks to back up novels, and I still remembered how unsatisfying this crap was (read years ago).

Imagine slime + mushoku tensei + a goddess with zero believers combined and made into a dark fantasy. I've really been enjoying it quite a lot. It's a revenge story with good world building, politics, cast of characters and even tells multiple stories at the same time that end up converging together. The way that these two stories converge and the conflicts that arise from the two are things that make the story enjoyable for me. Many times I would pause and think about the situation that's happening in the... more>> chapter I'm reading and try to find what the best resolution is. In my opinion, stories that make me WANT to stop and think like that are special in a way.

Regardless, there's a lot to be said about this series so I'll try to condense everything. This story has many gods, multiple worlds, many countries and even more people. There is a massive cast of unique characters. The conflicts and drama that is set up between some of them is great because of the circumstances that the protagonist is under. Yes this is vague, but I don't want to spoil anything. The main character is born as a race that has many prejudices against it and seeing him deal with this and live his life regardless is one of the stories strengths. He's a bit insane but that's why we love him. The best part about this character is that we see him grow up from the very beginning with minimal time-skips. The world building is better than most isekai novels. The magic system is okay but not that interesting. The game-like mechanics are fun at first but become overwhelming and eventually they just become annoying info dumps. However, there are so many chapters and each is so long that these info dumps are a really minor thing in the grand scheme of things. Typical harem collector story but it for some reason has zero romance, no fan service and is forced. This is odd, because it makes me question why the author even adds it to the story at all but happy because I'm interested in the other stuff anyway. It seems its just a dumb gag? There is another one of these dumb gags with idol girls that makes me roll my eyes but whatever. All things considered, I don't have many complaints about this novel.

I would highly recommend anyone that enjoys dark fantasy to give this a read. Like I mentioned before, if you enjoyed mushoku tensei, slime or goddess with zero believers then it is absolutely up your alley. I give this novel an 8.5/10 <<less

I'd say that this novel is not good, well I would lie if I said if I said I disliked it all that much too (since I read to the end of human translated part and even read the chatgpt translated version). I am A-ok with power-fantasy type of LN, and some parts of the novel were good (like certain morality related questions to some extent), also characters that are supposed to be infuriating are indeed infuriating (author doesn't overuse this, so you don't get frustrated), some characters have quite... more>> interesting "frame" and backstory (not a lot, but it's something), there is a bit of gore at times (aka author is not that afraid to not mellow certain situations) and that's about it. Author failed to actually show some very important aspects of the story and integrate them into the said story (all you ever get is being told about them), the justifications of actions in some parts are rather subpar, the pacing of the second half of the story is all over the place and it is quite drawn out for no good reason (atleast when compared to the first half), there are quite a few of macguffins in second part of the story and the power balance is very inconsistent (as in some very powerfull enemies get introduced pretty much right after we got told that the priviously seen enemies are the best that they can do at this time, or the spell that is supposed to be "off the charts" by even strongest enemies standarts suddenly gets blocked by some current extra).

All in all i'd say that it was meh, not as bad as some, not as good as some, so if you want some power fantasy to read you can go ahead and do just that (though i'd do that if it got translated fully), also don't expect that much follow up from the first half of the story (aka there will be no suffering for the MC, no grieving, no "survival", no "dark-grim" setting or any of the sort), so if you got lured in by the summary you'll have to reconsider. <<less

I would give this 5 stars. The MC gets so s*upidly powerful that he his allies have to down play his strength because the MC wants to be seen as human. Like his spirit/should is so powerful that it is formless/ incomprehensible but he forces it to look somewhat human. For the folks saying the MC goes soft... How much can you enjoy crushing ants before you get bored? Additionally he gains the power to basically kill souls permanently and had to manage not doing that to enemies that dont... more>> deserve that type of death. Bro at one point part of the MC becomes a literal God to another world while he is just chilling in this world. I've finished the story and it was quite enjoyable. Just on start ignore any and I mean ANY review under ch 100 (negative too, they arent really bright for dropping novel in such early chapters without letting it develop... or maybe lucky that they dropped it so soon before going deeper into swamp called "author's imagination) also first time actually trying to do review so bear with me

spoiler free: Read it if you got homework to school about mentally ill pacients or have interest about them as MC is one of them, otherwise find something else as this went... more>> later on original in wrong way

Pros:
Spoiler

MC is no hero, many reviews say that he is goody two shoes... ye like for 20 chapters until he decides to destroy world, kill gods, brainwash millions of people (not really pro but its here for whole part), MC isn't so obsessed over his human form, I mean usually we get MCs that would even lose half of their power if they could still look like adolescent edgelord (especially in jp novels), the part with growing pains and author actually making children not being able to aquire same stat power as adults was also nice

[collapse]

Cons:
Spoiler

Yeaaa this is gonna take long, MC basically brainwashes all of friendly side characters using his passive "charm" (it's f*cking brainwashing skill worse than in most of hypnotize+r*pe d**jins) and the moment you realise that is the moment where you will have hard time reading without being disgusted with MC calling it "affection", Side characters are bland and uninteresting (yea that's to be expected from brainwashed people), main character himself is disturbing personality wise, author did very well creating mentally unstable, twisted and scary persona... too well, person like MC would in normal world get locked into asylum for eternity and there would be documents about his twisted mind, the plot is just like MC unstable if said with consideration random and chaotic if not

The reviews really are whack so I won't bother hyping it up, I'll just make a few pointers as I've been reading for years and am keeping up as they drop roughly (04/03/22).

The book is pseudo-serious. From the character's perspective, it's not a joke or goof. From the reader's it's hyperbolic at times and full of typical Japanese troupes.

The world building is top knotch. As long as it's been going, I honestly haven't found any holes in the lore and this series is based 95% on its lore and history... more>> and the world the author has built. Actually very interesting/fleshed-out world (s).

All the women are beautiful, most of the men are macho. It might be a harem, but it's not ecchi. The story is based on a child MC, you won't find pervy crap.

The MC does not lose his edge as other reviews would have you believe. He's simply not heartless or angsty. He is kind and loving to those around him and absolutely ruthless towards anybody endangering those he would protect.

Last, I don't believe there is a plot. It seems very much so a story that's meant to be enjoyed without any substantial goal to pursue. MC's goal is to be happy and protect the ones around him. There is no direct aim for that except in small scale goals to help ensure that.

If you're looking for excitement, go elsewhere. If you want an immaculate world to fuel your imagination, you're definitely in the right place. It's not for everyone by any means. <<less
