Amamiya Hiroto is unlucky. His life consisted of misfortune after misfortune, culminating in an unlucky death during an incident on a school boat trip, trying to save a girl he barely knew. After death, he met a god of reincarnation who requested that the hundred or so dead passengers—one of them being the girl he tried in vain to save—be reincarnated into another world.

Yet a series of unfortunate events forced Hiroto to reincarnate with even less luck than before, starting with nothing but a tremendous amount of Mana. His second life, far worse than his first, came to a cruel end.

However, upon meeting the god a second time, he was informed that there would be yet another reincarnation—one that had already been set in motion and could not be stopped. Not wanting Hiroto to live long, the god cursed him before he was reborn in the hopes that he would either die quickly or commit su*cide.

Hiroto was reborn once more as a half-Vampire, half-Dark Elf. A Dhampir. Not wanting a fourth life, he is determined to live this third life with the only things remaining from his previous lives—death-attribute magic and his enormous Mana pool.

Death Mage as a story is backed up by its plentiful world building and characters that brought life to what could've been a common web novel. Our protagonist Hiroto, who later becomes Vandeliu, suffers from a sufficiently realistic abusive childhood who dies on a school trip along with 100 others. They get reincarnated by one of the many gods to appear in this story and is extremely unlucky when he his place got taken by another under the same name. And subsequently suffers from this God as his reincarnated life... more>> ends in suffering from his own classmates, which leads to a revenge sake plea to the same God as he reincarnates again in to the world that will feature predominantly in the story.

Firsty, despite appearances this story isn't a revenge seeking plot. But one that gets amplified by the occasional revenge seeking intention, Vandeliu prime motive is to resurrect his dead mother which indeed does happen and at a time where another plot focused element is happening.

Op main character is op and despite that in this story his methods don't always work and he's an unlucky fellow to begin with. The story doesn't hide this fact and is almost upfront about, in a way it's refreshing as the story works with it as an element that it doesn't forget as situations are always escalating and consequences do happen. His powers are explained and his methods for coming up with solutions with his powers make sense which his prior life.

Gods act the way they do much like the Greek pantheon, and self- fullfiment prophecy. The story doesn't let go of the fact that Gods, are not human, they do not understand desires, emotions, and life, the same way. The story hammers in that Gods, are not human.

Anyway, outside of making this way longer than anyone is going to read. Death Mage is well deserved to have some time to check it out with a great translation and formatting and has side stories that add to the characters and worlds that break up the story as it goes on. With minor time skips that feel natural to just fly bye. <<less

Edit: I see a lot of reviews that seem to be based on the beginning and some that could be described with "wait a minute, this story isn't dark at all!" and that there isn't much depth in character relationships or the action. It's pretty much all true.

I avoided this novel for a while because it seemed to be depressing, but it's not at all. Although there's tragedy and that kind of thing, there is always hope and fun times to be had. Spoiler example: ... more>>
Spoiler

There are some secondary characters that were r*ped by monsters before the MC saves them, but instead of losing hope MC accompanies them through the pregnancy and because of MC's special abilities, the monster babies are born more human-like and grow up to be friendly characters that are civilized and never r*pe anyone.

[collapse]

Anyway, I recommend it very much, my main dislike is that translation speed dropped around c170 and I want to read more.

Now, to talk about things I dislike in the novel:

The beginning, it's really frustrating. It just seems to be bad things happening to MC so that he can start his third life with the mindset the author wants or something. The frustrating feeling only goes away when MC starts travelling, if the author didn't write well I might have dropped this novel early on.

Rape, what's the deal with japanese and r*pe? I'm not saying the medieval fantasy world shouldn't have r*pe at all, but it definitely didn't need so much emphasis so that some monsters have r*pe as their main form of reproduction. I can only be happy that important characters don't get r*ped.

Harem, it's not that bad in this novel because there is a reason it happens, but this problem goes together with the next:

Too many characters, I love them all but I hate forgetting them. Author should have made their names more iconic or something, what bothers me the most is that a character named Orkus is not a orc, excuse me what the f**k.

Gods, they don't act god-like at all. They can't even send messages to people properly, it stinks of author wanting there to be gods but not realizing that if gods had too much freedom it would get in the way of the story.

Lastly, fights. This novel is good in this issue because it doesn't waste too much time pretending the fights are super interesting (like cultivation novels do), it focuses on the actually interesting parts of fights so I'm just nitpicking, here we go: SKILL-BASED COMBAT IS REALLY BORING. Too many authors seem to have been brainwashed by JRPGs and MMORPGs and forget how boring the fights in those games would be if you tried to write them down. I recommend reading the prologue (just the prologue) of "The Amber Sword" if you completely forgot how a fight should be like, where MC and his enemy are and how far they can reach is the basic of the basics, every attack that connects properly should be substantially effective, grinding away at a enemy's health bar is only exciting in videogames (I'm speaking in absolutes but it's just to make myself clear, for example: grinding the enemy's hp can be exciting in a novel too but it's just much harder to make it so).

Thanks for reading my ramblings. <<less

This is one of good Japan novel that I like. Usually I don't read Jpn novel but Chinese.

Despite all good story building and character and skill explanation.

There's 2 point that I hate so much:

  1. Even Rodoctore have so big power. He always make s*upid mistake. Very2 s*upid, he's a god who don't act like a god but more like a spoiled child that wanna taking revenge.
  2. Too much unintended spoiler. Example
... more>>
Spoiler

After Van discover new item, or something about adventurer. Sometimes there's always talk like this "in future this dish/item will be the most famous item of Talosheim.

When in reality, you will see that Talosheim is in war or targeted by almost all country.

From this alone I can get 2 things

  1. Talosheim will be always strong till the end and not destroyed or moving again
  2. As almost all item is make by van, so it means can will be survive till the end without difficulty
    [collapse]
I wish I can give 5 star, but this 2 point hurt me so much : ((

Well overall this is good novel that enjoyable to read. Easy to disgest and not too much complicated. Not too OP and developing in good way. <<less

Really good so far. MC isn't afraid to get his hands dirty. The strength gap between adventures and monsters is explained really well even if the MC can overcome these gaps in strength.

This novel showed a lot of promise. And, how shoudl I put it... While there a lot of 'Isekai' novels, I really don't know of many good ones.

With a rather interesting premise in the familiar 'isekai' setting, it started great. Add in the fact the world was taken seriously (mostly) and it was at least a half serious novel and I should have been charmed here.

There are however many, many problems. The fact I give it a 3/5 considering the ridiculous numbers of flaw really shows that it also has... more>> a lot of qualities.

I think there are a lot of interesting characters. The world is interesting and developed enough. The global plot direction is decent enough. However, it sometimes makes little sense.

Spoiler

I never understood why Vandalieu tried to become an adventurer and a nobleman. Funnily enough, even others characters have remarked to him how s*upid his objective was (in more respectful terms though).

[collapse]

As for the whole revenge plot that a lot of people have problems about. Well, yes, revenge is strange in this novel, in many ways. The one point that disturbed me the most was

Spoiler

how much he hated Heinz. That's a fine example of 'hating the gun but not hating the one who fired it'.

In the end, sometimes he forgives, sometimes not. It's impossible to predict whether he will forgives someone or not - it totally depends on the author mood and whether if he needs a new forced antagonist for the arc or not.

[collapse]

Also, beware. A lot of food related stuff will happen in the novel. I repeat, A LOT. What is especially strange is :

Spoiler

Of course, on Lambda (a different worlds), japanese ingredients (which are even 'rare' on earth) can be found everywhere.

Of course, japanese cuisine is the supreme one, and is liked by all species existing in all worlds. Be it humans, elves, goblins or even undead!

Of course, nothing is more important than recreating japanese cuisine in another world and all ressource and energy should go into that direction.

And of course, regardless of which world (earth, origin or lambda), the supreme cuisine will be present.

I mean, it's funny that he learnt most of japanese food production method on Origin, only to reproduce them on Lambda.

[collapse]

Well, there are many others problems, but I think I touched on the most important ones.

... Oh wait, there is just a tiny little thing. It's not much of a flaw than a complaint about how little this pretty important detail is almost never mentioned by anyone.

Spoiler

I mean, the MC is basically evil incarnate. He is the kind of guy to kill you and then brainwash your spirit into loving him. Most people surrounding the MC are mind-controlled into worshipping/loving him and that fact is far too easily dismissed in the novel. Add in that he is constantly f*ck*ng up the reincarnation system and risking the destruction of many worlds (thankfully the main 'antagonist' of the novel is here to prevent the MC from accidentally destroying all these worlds) and that he has overall the mentality of a brat, I can't blame some of his enemies thinking the world - nah, the multiverse - would be a much better and safer place without him.

This novel is one of the rare ones that executed isekai (reincarnation) very good. I mean beside some occasional redundant tropes and cliches and filler chapters this novel did almost everything great.

First of all, I don't agree with the people who said that MC is a usual revenge isekai protagonist since they only read about 10-20 chapters of the story so you can't really take their word based of that. While yes, he does have mu*derous thoughts to the people that tortured him mentally and physically, he doesn't act rashly... more>> like a ret*rd and tries to mu*der everyone on a rampage and expect plot armor to save him (that's what all those negative reviewers were probably hoping for), but he also doesn't try to forgive them or befriend them. I would say he is indifferent to most of them and tries to stay level-headed the best he can in most situations. (beside the main aggressors which still want to harm him and his people). Also, I find his personality and thought process pretty unique since he has his own set of rules and morals and doesn't give a sh*t about peoples judgment of him that have a different set of morals and traditions which don't agree with his. Though the best thing I find about his personality is that it's CONSISTENT. What I mean by that, is that while his character does grow, it doesn't suddenly and randomly change to according to situations and make him have a moral high-ground. It's extremely rare to find an MC that is consistent with his character be it benevolent, malevolent or indifferent since they usually change when authors need them to, due to plot convenience (and that applies to all eastern novels - CN, KR and JP).

The other thing that is very interesting is the world building. It is very diverse and complex and props to author for making it stick together for so long. Beside the myriad races present in the novel which all have different characteristics and are unique in their own way, he also executed the game part of the novel very well. There were maybe only some minor flaws I found throughout the 170 chapters of the novel in the game system of the world (skills, abilities, weapons, guilds, leveling, stat, special techniques...). I hope this will continue till the end since it's one of the major elements that attracted me to read this novel. Also, I forgot to mention the lore of everything (characters, races, jobs, skill, weapons...) that author takes time to write is also very appreciated since it adds even more diversity and complexity to the novel which makes it even more interesting to read.

The side characters... well... I have mixed feelings about this part. They are developed very well, you can see that author put much of his attention on developing their personalities, emotions, backstories and goals. But the problem is that there are just TOO MUCH of them. I mean, there are at least 20-30+ characters that appear frequently (every other chapter) but I just forget what their role is or mix them up with some other character and that's not to mention other side characters that appear less often...

I can safely recommend this novel to people that want to relax and read an interesting and consistent story (both plot and MC vise). <<less

This is a very good novel and I really enjoy it, the story, world and characters development is great. Also instead of going the emo way that those f*ckheads below wanted, the author chose a different path but still kept the main wishes of Vandalieu, good and logical decision makings by Vandalieu which is really rare for a reincarnated protag but there are also questionable ones but its not that big of a problem.
Spoiler

SPOILERS : Vida is kinda sh*t to me because she doesnt love Vandalieu for what he is but because he has Zakkart's soul fragment, she doesnt deserve Vandalieu's love at all

The reviews under this novel remind me why I made a rule for myself that I should never review any kind of content until seeing a good chunk of it. The amount of people being angry about being "tricked" by the lack of revenge plot (which is freakin there, and it's one of the biggest motivation and character flaw of the MC) while not giving the rest of the work a fair shake is simply depressing. But I am getting ahead of myself.

The premise is as follows: The protagonist, along... more>> with 100 other people from Earth, die at the same time. The god responsible for the system of reincarnation, as part of a plan to develop an "inferior" planet, reincarnates them into a third world to gain experience and acclimate to the idea of magic, so that they can fulfill the job he has for them on their next reincarnation. However, due to said god being incredibly incompetent (plus some other circumstances), our protagonist not only doesn't receive a destiny and a special power like the others, he gets captured by scientists, tortured, turned into a guinea pig, and ultimately killed off by his fellow reincarnators. When he chews out the god for this, he gets offended and, while he cannot stop his next reincarnation (as he already put the gears into motion), he puts three curses onto the protagonist that were supposed to make him commit su*cide out of despair so he would not affect his plans. So, he gets reincarnated as Vandalieu, a dhampir. Before his first birthday, his father is killed by other vampires, while his mother is burned at the stake by religious fanatics, but due to his enormous mana pool (granted to him by the lack of blessings) and a unique form of magic, he survives and escapes into the wilderness, where he stumbles upon a tribe of Ghouls, which sets him off on a path of revenge, conquest and kingdom-building.

Now, while the previous paragraph kinda spoiled the first nine or so chapters, I did so intentionally; for you see, the tone of the first half a dozen chapters and the rest is very, very different. While the first couple of chapters paint a story of revenge against all the cartoonishly evil people who have wronged the protagonist, it is merely a small part of the overall story more focused on kingdom building, intrigue and some slice-of-life. As for claims of the protagonist becoming a typical isekai MC, considering that he is not above cold-blooded torture, and that he is willing to pursue and try to destroy even the souls of people who wronged him, even if those people have actually turned a new leaf and became champions of kindness because of their regrets over what they have done to him, I'd say he is anything but your generic MC.

That said, the story is far from perfect, and while I do think the protagonist's slow descent into being an eldritch horror is well done, and the world with its systems, reincarnations and history is well thought out, the actual writing unfortunately still suffers from isekai-itis. There are several chapters dedicated to bringing modern technology and food into a world in medieval stasis, plus it even uses clichés of the constantly growing unwanted harem of one note characters and the introduction of mayonnaise blowing everyone's minds and making them worship the ground the MC walks on. The villains are also either incredibly incompetent to the point where they pose little threat aside of their obvious power levels, or they are so cartoonisly evil they are impossible to take seriously, the latter of which is something the writer seems to have a problem with, as he tends to make the "bad guys" so over the top it kind of becomes silly. Case in point, later we learn that the protagonist was raised by his cruel uncle... who denied him all kinds of luxuries to the point he freaked out when he bought instant ramen with any sort of special flavors, as those are "luxury". It's kinda hard to take the tragic backstory seriously after bits like that.

Also, while this might sound nitpicky, I consider it a flaw when the reader pretty much has to take notes to remember the names of the hundreds of significant and not so significant side characters, with each arc adding a dozen or so more on top. I have seen so many works do this, to the point where even the originally interesting characters lose all their depth as they get flanderized over time.

That said, while it suffers for such issues, the actual story is surprisingly engaging read, with decent, mostly absurd comedy. In some ways, it remind me of Slime Tensei, except with better power scaling and time-scale but with less memorable side-cast. <<less

I didn't really like this novel but reading all these reviews make me laugh lmao. People are giving these bad ratings because the MC didn't particularly take revenge on the people that killed someone important to him (I dont wanna spoil). There are bunch of edgy people in this comment section, just makes me laugh how much of these guys will become serial killers like wtf why do you want fictional characters to kill so much like fr yall need to stop it.

Never seen a story filled with so much nonsense. Nothing any of the characters do make sense. Plot developments go forward solely based on the fact that all the villains are irrationally and cartoonishly evil or cartoonishly s*upid.

The main antagonist of the story, Rodcorte, despite being some sort of highly technically skilled god in charge of reincarnation, makes a thousand mistakes with the MC. We see later that there clearly is some flexibility with the reincarnation process. However, this cartoonishly s*upid god tortures the MC with a horrible fate for... more>> apparently no f*cking reason. Then, he curses the MC incompetently and hopes he'll commit su*cide in his third life, leading to a series of ridiculous events that make the MC ridiculously OP.

All of the minor, expendable villains seems to do terrible things for no reason other than because they're evil. All of them are constantly plotting to kill and torture people for no reason, all the while monologuing like 2-bit villains about how they're going to do all these terrible things.

The MC is stereotypically autistic, but gains various cheat skills that make people around him like him instinctively. All of his adventures happen between the age of 1-9, allowing the author to have the MC constantly touch various woman while keeping it all PG.

For some reason, there's tons of "slice of life" chapters where the MC re-invents various foods. These chapters add nothing to the story and nothing in terms of character development. You could cut 25% of the story and there'd be no change in plot.

The story is an endless chain of cliches and awfully convenient plot developments. None of the characters are relateable and often do things for absolutely no reason. I've held on for a while hoping the story will get better but it's become clear the author has no idea how to storyboard or write a story with believable characters. Do not recommend. <<less

Really like this, bit to much unnecessary sexy bits.

on the plus side: interesting world, a bit evil/brutal at some times. Lots of funny situations, and the main charters use of his powers.

on the negative side: way to many lazy solutions from the authors side. Weird powers that perfect for a situation and waaaaay to many s*upid demon god powers/parts.

This novel is one of the best novel here to read let me explain why

First pros

1. Srart as mass produced isekai world then the world buildings start and its great every thing have lore and history and reason not the usual sasuga it fantasy world

2. Very good power limitations there is no relly cheat ability tham make anyone invincible and its hard to lvl skills not as usual novel the MC hold a sword for minute then a message appears you gain maximum sword skill not the always the MC... more>> did it becuse he is special

3. Very deep MC personality I like how he is insane but the same time not crazy ant the more you think about him the more you will feel pity for him
Spoiler

walking around with corpses as his companions and his mother soul

[collapse]

4. The enemies have personality and reasons and ideas for fighting the MC and you cant call the the bad people or at least half of them

Now for cons

Some of the side charters like the ghouls dont have mutch personality

2. There is a lot of talk about food

3. Its start bad like the first reveng wasnt satisfying at all

4.a lot of starngecreatures that become the MC harem I dont know if it the author fetish or that how the story goes becus there is not any s*xual interact with them

(so you will enjoy it very mutch but its kind of story like cigarettes it will be bad at first then you will get addicted for it (slowly)

All in all its great story and greatly recommend it and have amazing translation <<less

The reviews so far for this series... are amusing to say the least. This one is unique in the way it is written. Think along the lines of Japanese novel with the pacing and plot elements of a Xianxia novel. The start in itself, is more or less what you would commonly read in a Xianxian as well. However it still has the base useless details and musings of a Japanese novel, which is great. If you're looking for a strong to weak series, this is not it. If your... more>> looking for complex characters, this has it but it makes you look for them (complex side characters). Haha, well, hmm...

Plenty of good and bad points about the story but it all depends on what you like.

The MC refuses to follow the predetermined life forced upon him by the God of Reincarnation. He goes off to do his own thing for his own happiness. He is extreme at times and a bit of a laid back idiot at others.

... more>> The story definitely sets the MC as OP and the plot armor his thick.

If you enjoy an OP MC that breaks the rules and creates his own little bubble where his friends and family can build their own lives, then this is probably your cup of tea. He is the kind of MC that cannot die unless Divine intervention plays a part. And even then he might survive.

My biggest fault with this story is simple: The MC is about 6 years old and EVERYONE treats him like an Adult. I don't care how much of a genius a kid is, treating a 6-year-old like a Mighty Level Hero capable of battling Gods and taking orders from him is just mad.

Spoiler

"MC I want to have your babies."

MC: I am only 6, come back in 10 years.

"I will wait 10 years, sure!"

"MC, I know I am 200+ years old, but I only look like I am 16. Can you have a baby with me when you are older? And a baby with my daughter too. And my Granddaughter if it isn't too much trouble...?"

MC: I guess, I will decide when I am older. My hormones haven't developed yet so I will decide in 10 years.

"Haha, I look forward to it."

[collapse]

Well, if you ignore some parts of the story, the rest is alright... as long as you like the style anyway.

This series is good and all but many chapters talk about nothing but food... seriously food is fine and all considering its one of the major necessities to live but to talk about nothing but food is like the author just talking about his favorite meals. what is with the japanese and food?

putting aside what I dislike about it I think it has a good premise but the game mechanics really get in the way of a good story. I really hate stories that just try to offer you the... more>> world in a game-like way but fail to deliver any real meaning as to why it's there. This story would be one of my top 10 if it wasn't for the leveling system.

I get that the system does interfere with his ability to "level up" but the story could probably stand alone without the system.

3 stars for a unique story but -1 stars for the game-mechanics and -1 star for rambling on about food for 3 consecutive chapters twice so far.

I should also add that the fights are pretty boring in my opinion as well. <<less

It's worth reading in my opinion.

In the beginning it gives you the understanding to pity the MC because of his misery in his first two lifes. Reaching the third life as Vandalieu he starts rethinking, loving his mother for being so kind to him (he still has traumas from past two lifes). He goes mad though after she gets killed and is even now seeking ways to revive her (which is considered possible with his death attribute magic according to him and everyone he gets related to and considers... more>> family). His madness is the effect of not feeling disturbed to kill and also not afraid of the aftereffect to the body during and after it dies so he is more or less considered "mad" because you normally don't feel nothing at all...

His strife is still tied to the string of reviving his mother as priority number 1 unless circumstances appears where his family's life is threatened. His strength / power is till growing and it's also showing he will meet with Vida and gain a divine protection from her eventually too... so reading this really is interesting and it has only reached like 1/5th of its story so far. (The food making parts is a pain though but informative, sadly they mention only Japanese food and honestly I can't really care about food I haven't tasted on so... maybe you won't either? Well if you look past that everything else is worth while.) <<less
