I would actually rate this around 4.5.

This is my first time writing a review. I will keep it short and be aware my linguistics skills are not that good.

This novel was fun and I had a blast reading it. I love the interactions between MC and his classmates. It felt neutral and that and his personality is what got me hooked. If you are tired of some cool-blooded, regressed 1 million times, or have some insanely high level of self-control edgy guy, I think you would like this novel. The... more>> MC has a thug-like personality and it's not annoying. The flow of events in this novel is unpredictable (at least to me) and all the girls in mc's harem aren't one who would fall in love with him at first sight. The characters in this novel have decent IQ too.

Although MC did interact with many girls compared to boys, not many of them fell in love with him and instead they have a well-written platonic relationship which I see something most novels don't really focus on. Each classmate is well-written too and has some character development.

I would rate the first part (academy part) 5.0 and the second half 4.0., ofc out of 5.0. The second part is not as bad as it states in some reviews but there are three things that slightly disappoint me.

    1. Repetitive sentences
    2. MC full ability is not shown (I think there will be a sequel)
    3. Spoiler

The fight with Ellen. One word. Pathetic, but can't bring myself to hate it. :D

      [collapse]
I wish there were more side stories and...

Spoiler

the reappearance of long-forgotten characters in the latter half of the story (Like the yoga teacher and the knight that rescued Charlotte). Ludwig deserves better, I really feel bad for him. I also low-key want MC somehow to go back to the academy and enjoy the fun interactions like how it was before. Realising that moment could never come back makes me sad.

[collapse]

Harriet, best girl. No agruments.

Overall, it's not perfect but it's worth a try. I don't think you would regret it. I would reread it in 2 years and maybe make another review. <<less

It was good around the beginning and as it went on the story became a whole lot boring.

The Start was good and the author did a good job with conveying their inner thoughts but after 350+ it takes 2~4 paragraphs of non-stop inner bickering which doesn't have any importance to the plot but only shows that none of the characters like themselves and that they'd rather self-loathe themselves instead of trying to solve problems in smart way.

And halfway on Reinhardt who spoke with action rather then words and had some... more>> brain started to just be dumb and didn't even try to improve his situation, like the story and the character's stagnated.

"If their are big problems that are out of your hands then you've gotta take a step that the problems won't see coming"... this is what I wanted the story to convey but it really just got rotten halfway and it felt like Reinhardt even stopped trying to improve his skills, I mean he got spirit speech a variable that might help him a lot, but 100 chapters passed by he didn't even try to improve that ability or tried to understand it.

Like almost every other KR novels, this one suffers from the horrible novel rotting syndrome. <<less

FINALLY! A LONG SLICE OF LIFE NOVEL!

This was such a fun novel, and I absolutely love how it ended. I think some other characters could've used an epilogue, but I still think it wrapped up when it needed to.

Note to self: Add emotionless girl with a cat to my list of favorite tropes

I want so badly to give this story a 1... and at the same time I want so badly to give it a 5.

My first read-through, not that many chapters had been translated, and I ranked this novel in my top 3 (there was also less available at the time). My second run, I decided that I loved the story so much it was worth the mtl.

Unfortunately, that's where everything went wrong.

This story let me down so much I started to empathize with my father. So much beautiful character and... more>> world building seemingly went out the window and the "academy" novel spent the second half not even at the academy.

Other reviews have touched on why, so I won't waste time... but after a lot of consideration and a third read, I've decided that being able to bring me this much emotional trauma is impressive in its own right. In recognition of that, I split the difference: 5 stars for the first half and 1 for the second = 3.

I still recommend the read if you, like me, turn to literature so that you can feel something inside. Personally, I won't put myself through this again. <<less

Absolutely enjoyed reading this story so much that I created an account to review it due to the disappointment of the story towards the end. The ending/middle end is very frustrating as it completely ruined a good story.

I liked the main plot of the novel until after the Rezaira arc where it the plot gets derailed, the plot becomes forced and rushed to create tragedy for the suffering of Reinhardt. I would have rated it a 4.7 up until the evil spirit arc, changing my rating to 2.4.

Spoiler

What frustrates me the most is that The Elder of Council with all Vampire Council, Harriet, Liana, Airi, and Olivia goes behind Reinhardt's back and transfer the spirits to Ellen. This just doesn't make sense. First: Why would the council trust the word of Antian*s when they know that he is there to cause misfortune for his entertainment, especially Reinhardt's misfortune. I understand that it was the only option they could think of, but this leads to the second point. Second: Why did they not discuss or include Reinhardt about finding a solution to the problem, he is their Demon King; they know that he knows about the future and they know he has been solving a lot of their problems that they caused in the first place. Third: Why would they continue to do actions behind his back for his "benefit" without his consent when they know that everytime this has occurred it has ended poorly and caused many problems.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Such example is listening to Antian*s and using Ashaka to open the gates when Eleris knows that Reinhardt has been trying to prevent that situation which will just cause him misery, and the second

example is when Liana tried to help Reinhardt out by killing all these people creating all those resentment which caused the problem that the author forced in the first place.

[collapse]

Spoiler

This whole subplot is very forced and just shows the powerup bias of Ellen as this also made her stronger (than Reinhardt of course) after having a whole arc of him training his heart and being a master class. I think the author set him up to being too strong as he already could beat Master class with just pure strength and magical output but after the arc he needed to make his "destined" rival be stronger.I understand that the author has already previously introduced the concept of ghost/spirits, the power of resentment for Ellen's diving weapon and how Ellen has been feeling guilty and has been waiting for a chance to help Reinhardt but smashing all that into twist seems wrong and a bad choice of outputting drama and tragedy.

This story just goes downhill after chapter 400. It goes from a slice of life rom com into a depression fest for 200 chapters. I hate what this author does to all the characters and wonder why it has to be this way. Up until the switch from rom com to tragedy, this was my number one favorite novel. Now its one my most hated novels cause of this crappy awkward depression ark thats gone too far. Its not even fun to read anymore, I just get angry. There's a... more>> way to do sad right. Angel Beats, Clannad, AoT, and so many other works have shown me that. This novel does sad horribly wrong. The best part of this novel is the character interactions but after the sad stuff starts theres just a drought of interactions. Its just "hey we're gonna look at how this character is doing during all of this, oh no they're depressed, what a sad world boohoo. How's this character doing, they're also depressed, such a cruel world. How's the FL doing, they're super depressed and we're going to keep talking about how everyone's depressed for 200 chapters." This is a 2.5 cause half the novel is amazing and half the novel is garbage.

The very beginning of the novel I remember being kind of boring but eventually it starts to pick up after a lot of world building and the author starts to get super into the characters. If you stick through a bit of the bad at the beginning this novel starts to be incredibly good. Character interactions are mwah (thats me going mwah like a kiss)

Spoiler

It also ends in an incredibly awkward harem ending which I also hate. Throughout the entire story the author has labeled one character as the main female lead. They got the most character development, and she was the closest to the MC. I was hoping that maybe after this entire debacle the MC and FL will settle down, but noooo we have to have dumb harem ending. Seriously what is it with male protagonists being unable to keep their d*ck in one hole. This harem trope is just getting so out of hand. So many of these authors need to realize that not every female character needs to love the MC. This novel is better than most other novels on this website cause they do a thing called having male characters other than MC and a lot of the female characters don't love the MC. But ending everything with a group marriage feels like the most wimp way to do this. It's like the author is making everyone get married to MC so that he doesn't piss the fanbase off. Harem ends just always feel so awkward. The author supports the harem end by saying that its political and everyone getting married stabilizes the kingdom but I don't believe that sh*t. It feels like a crappy excuse to have a harem ending.

[collapse]

This novel is just so much lost potential. I don't talk about the good parts of this novel much because around 600 chapters I dropped it and picked it up again a year later so I don't have many memories of the good parts. But the first 400 chaps in the academy are just good, I say so much bad about this novel because the first 400 chaps gave me high expectations.

Spoiler

It was good, it could of stayed good, but the author just decided that he wants to destroy all the characters' lives. It makes me so mad cause I hate seeing everyone so depressed and it really hurts to read. The depression arc is also super boring cause of just so much repetition of the same stuff. Like each character has whined and cried about their titles and the burdens the world has placed on them that it has gotten so over done. So even if the sad part was interesting in the beginning it was just overdone to the point of boring.

[collapse]

I think that something so many novels fail to accomplish when writing sad stuff is to include things other than sad. You can't just have sadness by itself. Whether it be small moments of happiness, hope, action, plot twists, something else needs to be there. For example, AoT has a very dark and heavy theme but will lighten the mood with idiotic characters, and spice things up with invigorating plot. Clannad makes the sad parts hit incredibly hard by slowly building up to them with happy memories. Angel Beats plays around with sadness and happiness showing that they are 2 sides of the same coin and each can lead to the other. The depression arc of this novel fails to incorporate elements other than sad. There's a constant dark and heavy tone that gets boring and uncomfortable to read very quickly. I'm near the end right now but I don't even wanna finish it. Everything is just so awkward and unfun to read. I just wish the author had decided to do things differently. Maybe in the future he'll write another book and it will be good from beginning to end. I don't want to entirely blame the author though, writing is hard. Writers don't always make the best choices for their works. I hope this book will help the author make better future books.

If you read this novel, read it up until the "Gate Incident" happens and then drop it. Imagine your own ending for the novel where the "Gate Incident" never happened and move on with your day. <<less

TLDR :Amazing novel that you should give a try.

Alright, so where to start.

I guess the elephant in the room : this is not a novel for those who just wants a light reading of an overpowered MC gathering harem members with a side of lot of comedic moments.

... more>> Yes, it does have some of it. Mostly at the first half of the book. And thats the reason some reviewers dislike the book. Because after that... the story really took off.

Yes, the story really changed in tune midpoint. But precisely because of the good, warm and happy parts of the first half that the reader could really, really, care for every single one of the characters.

This is a long book. Its a saga, really. Its like harry potter. Except better. But like harry potter, it started lighthearted. The whole thing takes a more serious tone in the middle. The strength of the first part meant that when I reached the second half, I wanted all of them to survive. I wanted all of them to reach the good ending. And all of it is because the first half was so well crafted.

I won't lie - it took some time. Once the serious part started, it was almost too much. I put the book down for a while. Weeks. But at the same time I could not helped wanting to know what is going to happen. But it was a struggle. But really. why should heroes trying to prevent the end of the world be a light topic?

What made it an even harder read is because this book is ultimately about human connection. The misunderstandings we have with our friends, our family, or enemies and strangers and everyone. And knowing that things happen for a reason, and sometimes those reasons are s*upid reasons, we regret. This book is filled with monologue and discourse of regret. Of logical characters making logical choices knowing that they are the right choices that will put them in the path of regret. It shows the kind of decision making world leaders have to face, when they are faced with the option to do the right thing that could affect a lot of people... negatively.

Honestly, it that paragraph just now is too much for you to read - then this book may not be for you. Because the book has sooooo much more exposition on the topic. Honestly, its not an easy reading, that second half. But its so good. I have liked funny books, light hearted books, harem books, and while this is all of that at times, but I also think that it is at the same level as Dune, the book. Although Dune is about betrayal and conspiracies, while this one is about Conspiracies and Regret.

Its a very very clever book. While I am reading it, I wonder if the author used up all of his ideas in one book. It covered religion, politics, economy, empire building, human relationship, love and hate, and ultimately, hope - the driving force to overcome regret. The hope that it will end well. That it will have a good ending. That it was all worth it.

It was worth it. One of the best book I've ever read. I hope you will find it as entertaining, despairing and hope inducing as I did. <<less

This story was both a nice read but also a bit of an annoying read at some parts. For most of it, it is pretty good with a decent pace and good interactions between characters though there is a lot of "romance" or "rom-com" stuff the MC for some reason is oblivious to all of it even though he's supossedly something like 30-40 when looking at his mental age.

The first some 100-200 chapters also feels to me like the author hadn't decided on where to go with the story exactly... more>> like for instance the MC has the ability or talent to potentially gain every single talent in the world which made it seem like he at first was the weakest but had the potential to grow and become the strongest, but nothing ever really comes out of it and he only learns like 1 or 2 abilities while the rest I believe he buys through the system. There is also quite a bit of talk about the MC learning magic early on but because he is demon he can only learn demonic magic so again there is quite a few chapters where the MC mentions how he's gonna learn it from his demonic servants. Again though nothing ever comes out of it and the author never even gives a reason why he decided to not learn demonic magic any more or for as previously mentioned he's not learning other talents/abilities.

So while the as mentioned premise at first seemed to quite a bit about the MC building power and growing super strong the story quite quickly instead starts to focus around the interactions between characters and stuff that mostly happens in or around the school + the fact that the MC is building a harem but in a rom-com fashion where the MC is oblivious to it all. At the same time at first the MC is shown to be in love with his vampire servant but then all of a sudden that no longer matters for again no reason given at all and then way later the author seems to adress it by making up a reason to why they can't become a thing (spoilers).

Spoiler

The vampire servant turns out to be the MC's great-great-great-great-great-grandmother.

[collapse]

Which to me felt kinda forced and like the author was just trying to make up an excuse from nowhere.

Oh and just for the record in this story humans are pretty much always the bad guys/evil side like for real humans are 100% pure evil in this story and for some reason even though their the worlds evil pretty much they act like it's everyone else's fault. (Spoilers on this)

Spoiler

Like the last evil / final boss or whatever is the resentment the dead humans feel against demons and what not cause demons weren't allowed to fight back and kill them so now they hate the world and wanna destroy everything pretty much. Heck even the start of the story is about how the humans invaded the demon world and killed most of them and turned most of the survivors into s*aves while the demons were trying to create a world where humans and demons could live in harmony.

[collapse]

Anyway this is a good read for the most part if you enjoy a sort of fantasy story with a bit of fighting but mostly focuses around the MC and his interactions with other characters in the story. <<less

The story was amazing until it shifted to completely different genre in the middle. It started being about adventure, overcoming challenges, creative problem solving, etc. Then it became a complete romance. All of the events became meaningless as everything became dependent on people’s feelings for each other. The change was not for me.

I dont really read novels as much anymore but when I picked this one up through the manhwa I was shocked at the quality of the work. The character development and interactions throughout the story are insanely good. I think that there was maybe one mini arc that I skimmed through towards the end but after reading the conclusion of that plot point, I went back and reread it. There is honestly nothing about the plot that doesnt make sense or was overdone. A truly brilliant work of fiction.

The reason... more>> Im writing this review is mainly concerned around the 2nd half of the story. I wont say that it is not right to hate the second part of the story as it is at the end of the day your own personal opinion. Around 430ish chapters into the novel, the tone and plot shift from a romantic and slice of life-y story into a full blown tragedy. A lot of the innocence and comfort that readers of the first half get used to are ripped apart forcefully. As you might expect, this mirrors the events of the story. I was worried myself if the author would ruin the novel or half ass the writing in the 2nd half due to some reviews. After having completed the story, I wish to say that in my opinion, those reviews are nonsense. The quality has never dipped once in the second half, all plot points flow together seamlessly, and all character developments that occur make full and complete sense within the confines of the story. Rather the scope and detail of the second half were truly amazing to me, I really appreciated the direction the author took and how convincing it was. The world that the author made, destroyed and remade are beautifully whole. I loved each and every single character in this work from the villains to the heroes. Not one felt out of place or extraneous to me in the slightest.

I dont know if this work is for everyone, but it is definitely among the best works translated here. <<less

Bleh. Another Japanese beta author but who tries to make MC tough but keeping beta ideals. It doesn't work.

Loop/plot holes peppered everywhere.

One of the worst possible characters is a pacifist vampire who defends humans

the humans started the war for a dumb reason. Yet she was happy that the demons lost the war to be ens*aved, tortured, multilated and r*ped. She is unwilling to kill the humans who commit these crimes, yet was willing to kill the MC if he decided to stand up to defend the other demons.

And I'm not even going to go into how much the author lacks common sense, even though it bleeds through the story. I thought it would get better. It only got worse. A waste and disappointment. <<less

4.5/5 (Rounded up to 5).

I agree with most other reviews. The first 400 chapters of academy life are great. The author does a great job of making relationships between most classmates feel genuine. Personally I still really liked the latter half of the story. The huge shift in tone was really jarring, but it was still enjoyable because the author wrote pretty likable characters that you care about.

Cons : I have 2 major issues with the story.

1. The ratio of girls to guys is really awkward. There's about 10... more>> important women, while there are about 2-3 important guys. Which naturally means most of them are into the MC. It tries to be a harem, but 90% of all romantic moments happen with 1 girl. There's almost no romance (that doesn't involve the MC) happening in a high school setting which makes it feel really unrealistic.

2. The 'cheat' system is poorly written and utilized. It's just a plot device for the author to write the MC into unwinnable situations, then suddenly the MC remembers he has a cheat power. The MC is also really dumb with the use of his powers. He starts with a weak body, demons are naturally good with mana/magic, and magic has been mentioned to be outrageously OP multiple times. So lets choose sword fighting.... like really? <<less

Easily top 3 novels I have read. Really enjoyed the development of all the characters and the tone shift throughout the whole novel. If ya'll are worried about the MC having a weak mental, like all the other characters in this novel, he develops over time so just binge it and enjoy the process. Very character driven story, everything feels natural. Also really enjoyed the epilogues.

This novel is a complete waste of time.

Why? Because the author spends all his time building up a scenario just to difuse the scene with an eagle eye vision. Let me give an example (no spoilers) :

MC finds a friend in great jeopardy and plan to resuce the said person. MC does everything on how to tackle and what not. You read the premise of the situation. And suddenly, you see the aftermath as a third person. All this time you were reading in MC's pov, so you except the... more>> events folding as they go, however, our author just skips the actual tension and gives an eagle eye vision.

Spoiler

This can be seen in the first part of the novel where MC tries to free the demons from the Church. They skip the most important details of the church leaders reaction, MC's plan to teleport location etc.

And then there is Olivia's rescue. That was such a bummer. I dropped immediately after. How could you build up so much to not show a small pov of the opposition. It was very anticlimactic.

It felt like this was the only true happy outcome, like no adversity in the waiting.

[collapse]

Apart from that I hate the hypocrisy of the other characters. It's just not for me. <<less

Starts out good but falls apart nearing the end. The Author clearly has talent in writing and even has decent romance in the novel but eventually, he screws it up so bad that it's unbearable to read in the end.

Overall, the novel was a great read till chapter 600 (or till 400 depending on the person) but the ending felt rushed. I have been genuinely interested in reading a good academy-based novel, but most of them are extremely bad as the idea itself is quite overused and is nothing special.... more>> But this novel fulfilled my wish. It has hands-down the best academy arc of all novels I have ever read. So, it was quite satisfying to read in the first half. If not for academy tag, I wouldn't have read the novel since it has harem (an average one at that, not that any harem is ever any good). Give it a try to see if you like it or not. It may serve as time-pass at the very least.

Some personal issues with the novel
Spoiler

It felt that the Author deliberately ignored some important things which includes the relationships between Reinhardt and the girls. Even after completely reading the novel, I still am not sure about the feelings of Reinhardt himself about whether he loves or even likes for that matter any of the girls in the novel. It feels all the more disappointing considering that the early romance in academy was quite good. It caused an unsatisfactory and sour feeling for me after reading the end of the novel.

Another thing that genuinely annoyed me in the second half of the novel is the ridiculous amount of forced guilt that every character shows in the novel. Frankly, it felt like the novel was completely running on guilt which ruined it for me nearing the end. Not to mention the system, which still remains an enigma till the end of novel. I would have liked some explanation for the system which contributes greatly to overall world-building.

Absolutely one of my favourites. One of the few harems that are actually well done. The plot, growth, characters, etc are fantastic. If there is one thing that lacks is backbone for the MC, he is sometimes a pushover which can be really frustrating. But if you can look over this I really recommend it. :)
