“I can’t accept this! I can’t! Even as a ghost, I’m going to spend eternity cursing that your relationship will shatter like glass! Break apart like a pair of mandarin ducks that fly away from each other!” With such a persisting obsession, it would be difficult for the vengeful departed spirit to move on.

Ji Man had only read a light novel to pass the time, but she was unexpectedly pulled into a very strange dream. She had become the novel’s most vicious villainess.

The novel rewinds to the beginning. The villainess who had been ordered to commit su*cide reappears on stage and begins to follow the plot as she walks toward the novel’s ending once again, to a courtyard deep inside the marquis’ residence. A female lead that’s like the Holy Mother. Countless cannon fodders. The imperial family’s favor…

Translation: 4.5/5

Plot:5/5

Characters: 5/5

... more>> Existential Crisis: it was all a dream

This is a setup that appeals to me. MC transmigrates as the secondary villain fated to die, but she's practical and clever and improves on the hand she's dealt. She's not ridiculously OP, suffers set backs, makes mistakes, but she learns from them. ML is a d*ck for most of the beginning and middle, but it turns out he's kinda tsundere and stuck in his time period's thought space, but once MC forces him to question his previous behavior, he learns from them. This walked the edge between believable logic, dramatic development, and CP dog food for me. Somewhat puzzled at the ending notes for their oldest child, still within the bounds of the realism of the story I suppose. Anyhow, good read, laughed and sympathized. <<less

This novel is very good. The translation is smooth and very enjoyable. I love to read romance that kinda not realistic and fluffy. But this novel really not that. The portrayal of the ML and MC are really realistic (when you read about all the males in this story, you will really hate them and will eventually says “humps men! They are pigs!” Lol. But it’s also accurate in those time, it’s very normal, and women just don’t have any place in society others than getting married and having... more>> babies and stay quite. So they tend to become psycho in their inner courtyard to obtain “love” from a man. This novel worth the read but be warn the 1st large part of the story will have you cried injustice and wanna kill all those heartless guy. But the reality part most of the cultivation of marriage or to ‘cleaver’ way to obtain affection and good marriage is also true. I love MC character, so realistic in the way of dealing with all these emotion and see the the big picture. (The only life line that keep me cheering for her and kick ML from his high horse) There is a bit of twist at the very end but it’s all depends of how the public interpret form it. Thanks Fuyuneko san for the great translation and notes with details and all those wonderful discussions. Thank you <<less

So, I started reading this afraid of the quantity of chapters. It brought me flashbacks of god awfully long novels that insist in putting some unnecessary plots instead of ending it all cleanly but The Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir surprised me by keeping me interested for 95% of the novel.

Yes, sometimes I just wanted to get to the good stuff but the story has surprisingly a good amount of small details that make it all the more greater. The commentary of the translator also enriched the reading experience by... more>> a lot. And the final 40 or so chapters are all additional stories of side characters.

This novel is down to earth in a way that most aren’t and sometimes I just wanted to stop and go to the happy ending. But like our life, it’s the walk that makes the view worth it.

I do recommend it, but I recommend you to start reading it when you have plenty of time for it. I spent the last two days going to sleep at 3am because I couldn’t put it down! <<less

Love this. It is so different from other transmigration genre. I thought it was a transmigration but the end note from the author was it was a dream after all. The storyline was so beautifully built up. The heartache I had with this story was the ending of the MC eldest son, Haohao. The marquis (ML) was so gullible as to believe the son was the dark Star to the MC and he basically allow the monk to take the son away until his teenage year.

I give up on this novel because it starts to hurts my head. The main problem of this story is the ML that is a playboy, a jerk, insensitive and a scum. MC just want to live as best as she can but since the ML is the worst s*umbag in the world, she always suffered for nothing. Both the ML and MC are quite villainous, but while they're on the same side, they always end up alienating each other.

The other problem is the other characters that makes the plots... more>> so complicated and treacherous. Seriously, if this novel were a reality, the world would be destroyed since no one has any real loyalty and backstabbing others. <<less

I can't continue anymore..
Spoiler

.. After all the MC family been beheaded ? So cruel. Yeah she want revenge but why she still looking for the ML.. I don't like the way she accepted ML's suggestion (to be a teacher).. Most of the characters used a lot of cunning ways of achieving something.. Why? Where is the good people. None here. Everyone want "power". I can say you can't trust almost all the characters including supporting ML, they way he blame MC, the reason her families been killed.. At the first place why he suggest the princess to accept 2nd prince proposal. I can see he had hidden agenda. But im not so sure. I can't continue anymore very dissapointed, I hope all this is a dream. Lol. Like the title I guess

the story line is ok. But im very disappointed with the MC. Sigh ~

This is rather particular story that might not suit many people's taste. There are aspects of it that can be pretty divisive or polarising for readers, especially readers from not just a modern culture, but one without the instinctive feel for the cultural context of Ancient Chinese nobility as a setting because studying that isn't part of what they get from school, and the dark-grey-and-light-grey morality of most of the characters.

There are no easy villains or heroes here, just people.

My review's main purpose is to help you decide whether this... more>> story is for you or not. So, here goes:

My rating for this story is somewhat around 3.75 stars, but I thought I'd just round that up to four because I actually enjoyed how human almost everyone in this story is. Yes, everyone, including the cannon fodder characters in the Marquis' harem. Almost all of them, wonder of wonders, get character development or get shown depth that proves they are more than the caricatures or first impressions that the MC (and thus the readers) has of them.

This is my favourite aspect of the story—the humanity. Fuyu Neko's translations are also excellent that it doesn't detracts from reading.

The various villains' intelligence represents a good variation, from the s*upid to the clever. Oh, if anyone complains about how the princes in the story isn't extremely cunning/calculating, well, most historical figures aren't either and they lived, so I think there's nothing off-piste about the depiction.

TL:DR version:

Stay for: The MC fighting back in the early part, and the male lead (ML) experiencing aggravation as he try to subtly (oh these ancient people) tell her he favours her and she's important and she just walks away, not getting it. Or, even better, she breaks his pretty daydreams by pointing out the reality of the harem (her life), or his previous treatment of the original Shangyu (didn't he wish she would be less obsessed and be more magnanimous? Why is he complaining about this new-and-improved current her that doesn't really care about getting his favour?) and how even court politics interfere with how freely he can dispense favour and disfavour to his wives and concubines (there are many women he can't just dismiss/divorce because he can't offend their families or backers, for one).

It's great how she watches those inner court conflicts with the enthusiasm of a spectator in a sporting event. She's also straightforward with anyone who likes her who isn't her husband, saying that she can't accept their feelings as a married woman (unlike some other two-bit white lotuses we've all seen in some other stories). She doesn't really feel that much for her husband (for a major chunk of the story) and yet she doesn't toy with them. That's integrity, folks.

Things that might put you off: Ji Man's life sucks at the beginning since the original Nie Shangyu does suck/is a domineering person and a bully who has hurt and harmed a lot of people. Her husband doesn't like her since the marriage was forced on him.

The correlation between the movement in court politics and the balance of favours the Marquis has to keep in the harem is high, so he can't even stop being a political operator in his own home (I bet he'd have grey hairs by the time he's forty). Readers might hate a ML that's constrained by his position as well as personality and would prefer one that is actually powerful enough to afford being honest to the person he likes.

Also, the misunderstandings/gaps in communication that can arise from their differing backgrounds/perspectives can be a bit headache-inducing. And you can't even complain about it since it's very realistic and true to their characters—he's a genuine ancient guy with a harem, after all, even if he keeps them mostly for political reasons.

My pet peeve out of all their perspective gap: in the first half, he keeps feeling that he needs to shelter her like any lady in the boudoir and not tell her about his ploys and machinations. Not that I can blame him most of the time; true to his world, it's probably appropriate with 90% of noble women out there, but it's given a lot more headache and even justified angst to the MC than necessary. Good news: MC in 320-ish chapters onwards starts bludgeoning him on the head with the idea that she doesn't want to be a woman that's just an ornamental vase and she wants the safety of an independent source of power/wealth and she demonstrates her capability in that sense. I predict that they'll meet halfway between their positions as the story unfolds.

Long version (spoilered for length) :

Spoiler

First, let's clarify that this is a transmigration story, with our MC Ji Man waking up one morning as Nie Shangyu, main wife of Ning Yuxuan who had just been demoted to a mere concubine due to her outrageous behaviour.

A bad MC can spoil an interesting concept that I'd drop the book on the first few chapters. Ji Man isn't like that. Her fighting spirit is great and her outlook is pragmatic. She really just wants to survive in this new world she's dropped in while cussing the original Sangyu. The story starts with her husband thinking the worst of her and everyone always badmouthing here because, I kid you not, it's entirely justified. That brings us to our second point.

Second, remember the original character whose life she took over? Nie Sangyu? She sucks. Original Nie Sangyu is a bona fide inner court villainess. Nie Shangyu was out of control, domineering, and bullying. She'd tried to ruin another concubine's face. She slashed the budget of other concubine's courtyards.

Sure, she's immature/wasn't raised well since her mother died when she was little, but that's still not an excuse to be a horrible example of what a love-crazed human being could be. She'd ab*sed her power as main wife and ab*sed people with it while the husband was away and busy dealing with politics, relying on her strong family backing (her aunt is an imperial consort) and her mother-in-law's bias for her. Heck, the marriage was practically forced on the Marquis by his mother and the imperial consort because the original Shangyu was so in love/obsessed with him. You can't accuse the other characters of being unreasonable—their wariness is entirely justified. And so is the Marquis' habit of always thinking the worst of all possible actions about her in the first 50-80 chapters or so (at the very least).

So, look, if you can't bear seeing the MC bearing such unjust circumstances for a while, like a twin whose blamed for crap their doppelganger pulled off, yeah, you might need to find another story where the atmosphere of the new life is lighter instead of all these pressures on Ji Man's life. For me, it's still an enjoyable read because the MC really doesn't take those troubles seriously, the main benefit of her modern outlook when facing ancient inner court problems and drama. 'Not my circus, not my monkeys'. Ji Man just considers it as a life someone dumped on her to fix. "You wanna go compete for the Marquis' favour? Go ahead. Not my business. Like I care." That's basically her attitude.

In fact, the point where I identify the most with her is when she can sense some drama brewing or play-acting about to start and she tries to get the best seat to watch with her metaphorical popcorn instead of trying to break the fight up or defuse the tension. Hey, if nobody would appreciate her effort, why the heck should she bother being virtuous? Also, it's not as if she gets a lot of entertainment in this era.

Third, it has to be noted that the ML, the Marquis Ning Yuxuan is a noble with a high position in court and yet not a prince. You may think that this shouldn't really matter that much, right? But no, this is a historical novel with a political bent, so of course it matters. I swear, his court position makes the lives of everyone of note in the Marquis household difficult.

Ning Yuxuan is at that problematic level when you've accumulated enough power that everyone in the fight for the throne is trying to get you into their faction or at least try to prevent the other side from getting you and thus also sabotaging your relationship with them. He's walking the tightrope and juggling knives all the time to look neutral, and as such, even the favours and attention he showers to his wife and concubines are at least considerate of their family background, connections and political backing too (same with his disfavour and why he couldn't divorce the MC easily).

Why does this matter? Look at all the few historical c-novels with the best MLs or decent/not-so-bad MLs. To Be a Virtuous Wife (He Heng), Eight Treasures Trousseau (Yan Jin Qiu), Rebirth of Malicious Empress of Military Lineage (Prince Rui), Chu Wang Fei (the eponymous Chu Wang whose actual name I've forgotten since I didn't read that far). They're all at least Junwang. The only people who can really oppress them is the emperor or more heavily favoured prince. The more the story progresses and we see other perspectives other than Ji Man/Nie Sangyu's, the more we see how much power (or not, really) Yuxuan has. Heck, when he's starting to like her, he can't even show it clearly because it might be taken as proof that the Marquis has finally fallen to the side of the Nie family's faction!

Ji Man is mostly oblivious to all this, which made it more entertaining. Whatever calculations and dilemmas Yuxuan has on showing his feelings for her or faking disregard, she's not even aware of it because she's not even watching his every emotion and mood like practically everyone else in the harem. She probably thought he's just doing the male equivalent of PMS-ing and move on.

Yeah, that's my primary entertainment value from this. Her fighting to keep her life comfy enough and his mounting aggravation to her lack of giving a $#!^ about his feelings and whether he likes/loves her or not.

Also, if anyone is idealistic enough to think that the marquis can easily resign his court position, dismiss his other wives/concubines and go to the countryside with only the MC to live the rest of their lives there (or something) to avoid politics once he realises how much he likes the MC.... seriously? Have you read enough historical novels? Someone is going to try offing him on the journey to make sure he's out of the way 'permanently'. Or take the opportunity to frame him to get someone else to take him out for them, once more, permanently. And that's not talking about all the people in his clan/extended family he's probably trying to shelter.

Even nobles aren't as free as they seem.

Four, the novel Ji Man had been reading was a romance novel, and thus glosses on many in-world details, and she was more focused on surviving that she didn't have the time to look at the big picture of what's happening at court/in the world in the first half. This meant that she's certainly not omnipotent about the potential shenanigans that can happen. With this comes my fourth warning of this novel; the reversal of fortunes can come so suddenly and of such extremes that the characters are shell-shocked. Readers might rail against more injustice piled upon Ji Man by the world, but such was the way of those days; life sucks and then you die.

Sure, the shifts in the political currents comes over the time span of months, and maybe a year or more, and the author is subtle with the foreshadowing and dropping of clues beforehand (the translator's comments and discussion are also enlightening in this matter), but readers who are like Ji Man/Sangyu and had only been paying attention to the matters of the inner court can get blindsided. Even Ji Man has her obvious blind spots.

Look, I don't blame the ML if he has to play the 'MC has fallen out of favour' card again to save his entire household from some execution-happy prince. Again, there are limits to his power and the ploys he could enact against them. I don't even care if she has anything more than an 'eh, that guy' feeling for him, though considering all the chasing he's doing and the happy-ending trope, the writer seems to ship them.

[collapse]

Again, I don't really pay attention to it. I'm not here for the romance. I'm here for Ji Man fighting tooth and nail against the world, and the Ning Yuxuan getting aggravated to death that the MC is not receptive to his courting, attempts at showing his affections, etc. <<less

Made this account for two reasons: for the story and our translator-nim.

The story, isn't something you'll read in any other

series. It's realistic enough and apparently, the MC, w/c is the FL, is jaded enough to appear real. She's amazing. I love her. Tho I probably the only person here who feel pity towards the ML, NXY. Haha idk, I just feel like his actions are justified. Don't kill me. And as a reader, I can feel the tension between them and I love it. Haha I can feel the... more>> distrust. I can feel the struggle. I can feel the love (lol!). The frustrations! Jiman's doubt, I understand. NXY's love, in his own way, I appreciate. Readers been giving this story a bad review, it's okay. It's probably not their cup of tea. But for me, this is awesome. Even better that DCF. So yeah. Haha

And to you Translator-nim, you are doing a good job. Just want to let you know that you have a supporter in me. And that I truly appreciate all your effort. Keep it up! Will support you all the way. <<less

The story really brings out the life of a harem member. The intrigues and lack of stagnancy of plot really make the story more dynamic. The only downside of the story is the author's forced shipping of the FL and ML. It's so forced that even after all the events happened between it feels they are back to zero again in their relationship. In some instance, ML red-wedding-ed, the FL and after so many chapter if they are back together again. The funny thing is that the author really doesn't... more>> know to much about political intrigue that he's forcing reasons that are very cringing, making FL feeling so tragic.

IMO, I prefer that the author should have given a chance for the FL to find a suitable romance, preferably the Second ML, but the author really want to force the ML/FL ship. I guess my review is a bit biased against the ML but, if you people read the shits that the ML did, you really want punch the GUY.

Heads to the future readers. The ML here is the "WORST ML" the one might read. <<less

It's been a long time since I made a review but I took all the effort to come here again just to leave a review for this novel.

I am giving 5 stars for the awesome translation and effort of the translator but the 3 stars goes to the over all story and ZERO star for the Male Lead.

The Male Lead is extremely unlikable. ??? I want to transmigrate myself in the story just to punch his face multiple times and give him all flying kick I could possibly send!!! His... more>> actions are illogical and he is soooooo selfish!!! I am praying that the female lead - Ji Man will not end with him cause she suffered a lot because of him. I just don't know if the author has a hostility with Ji Man but that is what I felt the whole time while reading. So frustrating!

It is a good read, however, prepare that your BP will fluctuate because of the male lead and his jealous harem. <<less

if you enjoy political intrigus. Its a very good drama. (Not suitable for romantic ppl) I get the feeling MC will succed in getting a divorce and become free. But she wont be able to go back to modern times due to the unfulfilled wish. It was impossinle to begin with since ML would have fallen in love with ji man not not nie sangyu. Nie sangu is not in control of her body.

This doesn't have your atypical mary-sue main character that you end up hating!! Instead they're treated as the antagonist of this story and oh my stars I absolutely love her. She's cool tempered, rational and very lovely to read about because she doesn't do my head in with how she approaches bad situations. And she is so clear-headed its a godsend I swear on my coins under my pillow that my B-rated comment doesn't even show how much this novel is such a gem in a rough from all those... more>> novels with mary-sues suffering from mental ailments.

I'm shipping the MC with the second male lead... Like, god, I hope she won't end up with the so called male lead because that man is childish af when it comes to handling with the women problems. I dont really know what to say I just didn't like it.

I definitely liked the premise and the start of it but I just couldn't make myslef finish it because by the middle of the book I just hated all the characters.

I hated the FL because I didn't feel like she stuck to her values throughout and she kept changing which I geuss isn't bad but like the way it was done she would just make choices that go against what she set out to do initially. Honestly the ML... more>> was such a douche and she just tolerated him and kinda let him creep in to eventually her loving him.

I have never disliked a ML so much gosh. I was honestly okay with him being terrible at first because I hoped there would be aloooot of grovelling and suffering on his end before he is redeemed but that barely happens. I didn't want to feel like I wasted my time reading it and so I read the last 10 chapters and because I still hated the ML I hated the ending.

Spoiler

The fact that he ends up inlove with her fewls so unrealistic to me. The author doesnt sell the fact that they will live together forever and be inlove very well because he'sso terrible to all the women in his harem. Like hes always falling in love with one discarding them, dalling inlove with another etc smh like theres no way they will grow old together if this was a irl story

5/10 this book give me so much mix feelings, the starting was great but I dont like how inconsistent are the characters, FL one moment was written to be aloof and nonchalant next minute she is emotion like girl pick one side either you be badass and kick his ass or be a seductress and woo him all the way.. Her character keep fluatuating in between which is very frustrating. Also I dont understand why FL like ML like dude wasnt keen on giving up his harem.. Like he didnt... more>> even take iniative to get rid of them like he is so EW and also why is the 2nd ML so underwhelming his character has no effect.. BEWARE of SPOILER

Spoiler

I felt like a fool when I read the writer's note at the end of this book. It's like I got invested in this book for nothing. The clue is in the title itself.

Anyway, Ji Man found herself in the body of one of the characters in a book she read. Because she mostly skimmed the book and even forgone the ending, she did not have much information except for the basic outline. That triggered my consciousness because when a book tends to lean toward the boring side, I do the same too.

Nie Sangyu was the abandoned main wife and the body that Ji Man inhibited. To get back to her world, Ji Man has to help Nie Sangyu achieve her one wish. In the book, Nie Sangyu was portrayed as a selfish woman who would do vile things to get the ML. Ji Man got glimpse of Nie Sangyu's life and what turned her into a villain. So, Ji Man got a one-track mind to help Nie Sangyu and at the same time exact revenge.

But, as the story progressed, the writer decided to turn it into a HE. And so, we couldn't have a black-bellied ML anymore. How to turn a black-bellied ML into a hero deserving of praise? By making Ji Man realize she and Nie Sangyu were two different people and what happened to Nie Sangyu shouldn't affected her. All the ML bad deeds were pushed towards someone else; either his other women or anyone as long as it's not the ML.

I almost abandoned this book because for the life of me, it's not romance anymore. It's more like a Stockholm Syndrome. The writer did her best to tie up all loose ends but hey, she's only human.
