“I can’t accept this! I can’t! Even as a ghost, I’m going to spend eternity cursing that your relationship will shatter like glass! Break apart like a pair of mandarin ducks that fly away from each other!” With such a persisting obsession, it would be difficult for the vengeful departed spirit to move on.

Ji Man had only read a light novel to pass the time, but she was unexpectedly pulled into a very strange dream. She had become the novel’s most vicious villainess.

The novel rewinds to the beginning. The villainess who had been ordered to commit su*cide reappears on stage and begins to follow the plot as she walks toward the novel’s ending once again, to a courtyard deep inside the marquis’ residence. A female lead that’s like the Holy Mother. Countless cannon fodders. The imperial family’s favor…

Let me begin by saying, this is one LONG book. But definitely doesn't disappoint.

For having such a wide variety of characters, the author really does a good job of keeping track of them, and also manages to flesh out their backgrounds and personalities well!

Our MC, Ji Man, is smart, sneaky, independent and totally on a one track mind about going back to the modern world after her transmigration. And honestly, I felt the same. You begin with absolutely detesting the ML (male lead) - who's just as sneaky & clever... more>> as our MC.

Ning Yuxuan is the typical narrow-eyed courtier every Emperor should keep an eye on. His harem politics is in a disarray, he feels as if he knows everything, is manipulative and has a slightly skewed moral compass.

Ji Man, or Nie Sangyu (NSY) whom she transmigrated into, fortunately is the perfect opponent for him. She's sneaky right back, manipulates him according to her convenience and hates him for leaving his first wife (NSY) to marry another woman, so she has no scruples creating problems for him.

However, that's the selling point. I loved how they were both flawed characters, definitely had to undergo lots of personal trials that led to them slowly changing themselves enough to suit each other.

For a story that revolves around romance, Ji Man certainly doesnt feel one lick of it, not until she realises that it has a chance of being reciprocated. That was satisfying, truly. In the cutthroat environment of ancient China, she adapts to it with such alacrity that she ends up being the main influencer of the story.

Ji Man and Ning Yuxuan are equals. More importantly, they start recognising each other as equals, giving each other due respect, and then slowly trust and affection. It takes time, it takes effort (LOTS of it), and takes some major political upheavals and revenge plots before they start depending on each other instead of planning around the other and using the other in their plots.

But it works. Goddamn their story is a GOOD one. And so highly addicting. If you dont end up loving the mess Ji Man is, I'll be surprised.

Spoiler

The best part? Or at least, my most favourite part - is having the ML fall in love with Ji Man, and not the character she transmigrated into!

(I mean, not caring that he's being called a gay man because he wants to spend time with his cross-dressing wife was truly the tipping point xD)

I just read 200 chapters over the weekend. The translation of this is very good and I really appreciate the notes that the translator provided. I'm not familiar with these types of stories/ancient China setting. It's so addictive. It's like reading the "bachelor" for ancient times.

I appreciate that the main character isn't a total idiot and she's also not some genius, but she is smart. She's trying to survive. The harem is so crazy makes me wonder isn't it better to just be a commoner than to live with a... more>> bunch of snakes that would rip you apart as soon as you show some weakness? <<less

CONSIDERATIONS FOR POTENTIAL NEW READERS:

    • The male lead: Honestly I was scared of at the beginning because of all the negative reviews. But now, after reading this myself I can say that most people just choose to hate on him. The author of the novel would give clues about the ML behavior and Fuyu would help giving insight or spoilers in the comments, but stills people (willingly or not) misunderstood what was going on. Sometimes I would question if these people were reading the same novel as me. Sure he isn't without fault, but he is nowhere near what some of this reviews make it seem. Judge for yourself.
    • The Harem tag:
      Spoiler

honestly, the women in his house will start to disappear for this or that reason, so the female lead won't have to share the male lead with all of them. But patience is key this is slow burn.

      [collapse]
    • The story: This novel it's divided into two part. The first one it's the more political one, while the second leans more towards the building the romance. But we can still see the scheming.
    • The characters: What I love and hate of this novel is that you can't fully support or hate any of the characters. Literally all of them make some poor decisions that will affect the way people see them. Even the "bad people" still had someone they love or care about.
    • The screen time between the leads: This isn't the kind of novel when you have to wait an eternity to see them interact between each other. They interact a lot throughout the novel. So you can see how the male lead slowly changes the bias he has against the female lead. From hating her, to trusting her and finally loving her.
    • The translation: WORTH IT! Fuyu did an amazing job with the whole thing. Thank you so much for your time spend translating this amazing novel. I hope to see another work of this author in the future being translated.

I love the female lead and the female lead only!! I get that this novel is trying to take a more realistic approach, but the fact that the male lead was THE MOST HORRIBLE ONE I'VE EVER ENCOUNTERED remains unchanged. Another commenter here said that if they had hi*ler and the male lead in one room and only two bullets, they would shoot the male lead twice... and well...I couldn't agree more! He is an absolute DISGRACE to humanity and all life itself! I managed to read up to around... more>> 200 before I started skipping chapters and finally dropping! For the life of me I couldn't take it. The only reason why I even read up to that point was the female lead and the amazing translation! <<less

I do agree with a lot of the reviews that go against the ML bc I lost interest the moment Jiman assumed her actual name instead of the original. the ML suddenly fell in love with her and grovel and all that bull-s*** I really cannot see anything redeemable about this ML.. and the way FL handles thing seemed like annoyance to me towards the end of the novel. I personally think that she'd better off with the other second MLs... one of them could be the ML's cousin.... that... more>> guy is 200% better. it all almost felt like the author are shoving their toxic romance into reader's throat and wanted us to think its okay for that to happen. its a no from me. the two stars are for the translator as they did a good job <3 <<less

First time reviewer here.. The story instantly grab my attention and I read this for two days. But then it goes downhill.. MC's character just frustrated me.. and ML.. man oh man... He's cunning, fierce.. and downright as**ole...

Maybe he would redeem himself later on, but as for now, I will put this book on hold and settle down my feeling first. But kudos for the translator, I'm really thankful for their effort to translate this novel. The translation is top-notch. One of my most favorite translator in novelupdates.

This story is an interesting one. It certainly does have elements of romance, but it is very different than the usual sappy webnovel romance where the leads are wholeheartedly and singlemindedly focused on catering to each other and fighting off rivals. Pretty much all of the men in the story view women primarily as tools to use to gather and hold power, and the novel is as much about the political and domestic intrigue as it is a romance. This being said, there is relatively little truly despicable behavior from... more>> any of the characters. There is no "avenge the great injustice done to me" storyline, and no "I'm doing all of this to win ___'s heart" either. The MC fairly realistically (if occasionally foolishly) behaves as one would if thrust into a situation like that. TLDR; the story is really good. There are multiple nuances to nearly every character's behaviors, and it is genuinely difficult at times to understand the reasons for their actions. The plot twists and turns, but in reasonable and (for a fiction) realistic ways. <<less

I absolutely enjoy this novel. It's quite different from all the transmigration novels out there. The main character isn't a mary sue martial artist. She makes mistakes and takes risks. Characters are morally ambiguous and really human. No one is pure or innocent. It's fascinating to see the power play of the characters and how it corrupts them eventually. Not only are the main characters distinct, even the secondary characters are really flushed out and well written. The character doesn't make any heroic attempts to apply modern morality to the... more>> world she's in and that makes a lot of sense even as we read her struggles with how women are treated in Ancient China. I can't wait to read more. If you're looking for flashy romance and handsome princes, this isn't for you. It's a very realistic slow burn and romance is not central to the story. I feel like it's a struggle of conflicting interests and desires. Each character feels so alive and real. Definitely solid character building unlike the other transmigration novel tropes. I absolutely recommend this novel to people who enjoy reading about complex plots and conflicts. The payoff is slow but worth the wait. <<less

in the beginning, I gave this novel a try because of the translator and I always skip any novel with harem or the MC or ML has too many wife or husband... but I just give a try... and did not regret it... its really good novel

But after 20 chapters, I cant stop... it took me 3 days to catch up the translation. The translator did very good job and the author gave me a headache with the plot and believe it or not.. I have became addicted in this... more>> novel... I hate the ML in the beginning but I cant stop to read it as I want to know his reason...

updated : Normally, I will not pick up this type of novel but for this one.. I cant... as the Fuyuneko did very superb jobs... I went along with the story... I reread it again... and it's worth

ok, lets say...

MC is very strong and she does not mind when ML has so many woman and sleep with so many woman as she put herself as spectator and she has not feeling attachment with ML so she even treat ML as trophy that can be reward to another women.. sound not interesting?? No... She knows what she wants and how to position herself in ML harem.. and yes... it is a slow romance but I feel like it more realistic and everything is understandable..

ML... I dont like him at all and prefer the 2nd ML but I cant choose... but in the mean time after in the middle of the story...I start to like him (not 100%) and as the author shows the ML POV.. everything he has done... has a reason on it... and I love when he try to figure out what is computer or bulb.. (lucky translator did a handsomely so I can got the meaning of it) <<less

At first I thought it is interesting. But later I was extremely dissapointed.I have never read such illogical, angst fillef disgusting story. Reading it means killing your brain.

The Male lead is most despicable character I have ever read. He tortures MC. He even stole MC s baby and hooks up with even MC's step sister. Male lead is a man who*e and yes I mean in the true sense of the term.

The MC is the most s*upid character I have ever read. She can be compared to ' Doomed to... more>> be a cannon fodder's female lead.

Just donot read unless you want destroy your brain cells.I made this account just to condemn this novel. Words cannot express how disgusting it is. <<less

I am definitely intrigued by this novel. I feel that the characters are played out beautifully. No-one is just genuinely evil or good but a mix of everything based on their decisions and circumstances, and background. In all honesty, I don't mind the male lead, and I really like that Ji Man is flawed and she does make some blunders, that's what people do – make mistakes. Re: male lead, he is a product of his time, and it is a realistic portrayal of a patriarchal society and what is... more>> allowed and expected of him. I know there has been a lot of mud thrown at the male lead and his treatment of Ji Man, but honestly, what would you do in his shoes. This novel raises so many questions for me, namely would the male lead truly love the female lead, Wen Wan and continue to do so in 'real-life'. I am not saying fairy tales do not happen in reality, but honestly, there will be many challenges when two very different personalities, with a vastly different upbringing and social status, are put together. It is only in novels where differences are easily resolved.

Let's face it - most transmigrating novels are genuinely a stretch of imagination where a modern person who most likely won't get a second look suddenly becomes omnipotent and basically god-like. Everything even the most complex of problems is resolved in a number of pages – really?! Suspended disbelief.

For example, Wen Wan is the female lead because the author says so. Her ingénue and naivety may be cute in the novel, but we know in reality it can get you killed or into serious trouble. Then in the typical trope of everybody loves only the female lead. I can never quite stomach where all the male in the novel simple falls for the female lead. Seriously, are the rest of women dead or extinct? Just not plausible.

I really like that with Ji Man's arrival, the storyline starts to change, and in a much more realistic way. I also like the fact that through the trials, JM and NY slowly begin to care and understand each other. I also like the fact that once the male lead realises that he loves JM he doesn't just stop loving the female lead Wen Wan, and he feels responsible for her as well as the rest of the harem. I know a lot of readers do not like the male lead not being 'pure' however, I urge you to see the story through the lens of his time, the society that he lives in, and what is expected of him. That said, it was difficult not to judge the various characters. There are some parts which really chaff at my belief and upbringing, particularly the many wives, but I completely understand that this is the mindset of a 21st-century person living in today's western society, not ancient China.

In life, the relationship does not always have a clear line where it is only in black and white. For example, one of my favourite scenes is the conversation between the male lead and Wen Wan. He basically discloses that he knows what she has done, and yet he still loves her and at least does not discard her despite it. Of course, it goes without saying in some cases it was to his advantage and he benefited it from, but there are many situations he did turn a blind eye from the pain she caused because he did love her (in his own way). I find it fascinating, and even though I don't agree with all the characters' decisions, including Ji Man, it has given me so many insights and food for thought.

Most of all – thank you Fuyu-Neko, for a fantastic job with the translation!! <<less

3.5 Just finished reading the first Arc (second arc review below)

Honestly the story is a little slow in development of the plot, I feel like the entire first arc was just ... more>>
Spoiler

a whole lot of schemeing and drama in the harem. The ML was a sly fox who used people to his advantage. He was the most annoying male lead I have ever read. I really hope in the second arc the MC makes him repent. Onc second he is in love with the white lotus then "Oh.. look another hawt chick... but wait I'm suppose to be in love with Wen Wan but nah she's no longer appealing to me cause she started to seduce other guys and don't love me as much. =_=

[collapse]

On the bright side the translation is done really well and the author did a pretty good job at character development.

Spoiler

Like how all of us can clearly see that the ML is an A**HOLE.

[collapse]
But I do feel that the MC underestimated her enemies a little, I understand that she feels like as a mordern person she has a higher education compared with the ancients. BUT She isn't Over powered at all and unlike many other transmigrational novels I do feel that this is a little more realistic. If you like that kind of character maybe give this a read. But I personally don't like seeing the MC suffer and enjoy seeing others get face slapped.

The romance is slow like even slower than snail pace slow so if you like quick romance and lovey dovey plots this is not going to don't it for you. On the other hand I will keep reading till the end because I do hope that we'll get a gradual change in character from the ML and I love face slapping moments >_<

Edit : So I've finally completed the second Arc

After reading many other transmigration novels I personally feel as though this is very different. Did the ML become better well you can say he gradually started to take notice of the MC. Is he the most loyal ML out there we'll definitely not. In the beginning he put his ambitions first however
Spoiler

that's why I really did enjoy this book because he did not immediately fall for the MC. This is a more realistic take on a transmigration novel. Which I must say I do really enjoy. The ending was a HE but the author left it to our imaginations to complete.

[collapse]

Overall a solid 4.5 stars. Guys this really is a gem but you have got to finish the entire book to discover how well its written. The plot may not be for everyone but it is definitely worth reading. <<less

This is a serious read. Though DSB is a romance story, its fluff is rather bittersweet. I guess not everyone would like it. The author is brave enough to make romance happen between a monogamous modern woman and a polygamous ancient man!

Things to look forward to in this novel:

1. One the best FLs in the CNovel market

... more>> 2. The hateful a** of a ML

3. FL's ingenious ways of fitting in and growing in an ancient setting

4. Side characters who actually enrich plot development

5. Realistic and relatable character conflicts, conversations, thoughts, and reactions

More than FuyuNeko's (TL) superb English translations, you get to enjoy TL's:

1. Insightful ramblings, and

2. Generous dose of spoilers

After reading all 200+ of FuyuNeko's English translated chapters overnight, I finished reading the MTL raws in two days! What could I do? I was hooked! ? <<less

Read 206 chapters in one sitting. Going to take a break.

It's been nonstop harem drama. Romance can be considered nonexistent at this point. Read some spoilers and the book seems to be endless infighting between harem members with royal politics in the background. The good stuff seems to be in the later parts of the second half of the story.

Would recommend for those who like to read about non-O.P. Female leads fighting harem members and for those with a penchant for douch baggy male leads.

I've just finished this book, and wow. Another great one after Virtuous wife, Cannon fodder & Empress with no virtues.

Understand why Fuyuneko decided to translate this and giving readers hints every now and then.

1st. PLEASE don't be turned off by the other reviews of the ML, he doesn't give us a favourable impression 50% of the novel but I can't help but praise his character. A smart, ancient man. He is not a one dimensional character (novels that starts off head over heels with FL/MC etc.) Reading this novel,... more>> I feel like NYX is more of realistic character than the 'perfectly painted' man.

The dude is from an ancient era, yes he will have a harem, yes he will be involved in politics.

  • novels with ML being virg*ns/one love life = perfect picture, makes everything cuter/sweeter I get it, but...
  • novels with characters like NYX = you see him change, evolve and adapt. (Even the MC at the beginning says it'll be hard for him to be a man of one heart). But damn, the man changes when he understands the true feeling of being with someone he truly can't live without.
2nd. He does everything for a reason - he ain't dumb or oblivious to facts - he is just planning (or scheming) for the bigger plans and ignoring small meddlesome troubles. We as readers, won't catch onto this easily because we focus on the journey of our MC - just like the MC herself (she believes most characters are one dimensional). To basically put it without spoiling too much, while we think he's dumb - he's got us wrapped around his fingers from the beginning. The only thing he can't control is MC xD

Two parts of the story shocked me & gave me a bit of chills, I was literally like "Oh my god *raises eyebrows, eyes widen in understanding, mouth open*"

3rd. It is political play and love intrigue - but this helps our ML and MC build their trust and relationship. You will get your share of romance in the end.

4th. Read this with a different expectation - see it as a game you're trying to figure out between the all the characters. I didn't find this book frustrating at all because I sort of went "Ok ML, there are 1000 possibilities to why you did things like this" NYX is an impressive character that I've read because he is a smart man in war and politics, he is not a gambler.

If you're use to reading abstinent ML pouring his heart and soul for a FL from chapter 10 then don't read this. <<less

I love everything in this novel. Gave it a 4 stars (my max score for inc novels) since the translation ain't complete yet.

Female Lead. Very clear headed. Not like those other female lead that is 'lazy' 'casual' 'easy going' but schemes all the way for power and love of ML.

She has clear goal: Fulfill the original's wish, survive and go back to the modern world.

And she doesn't deviates to that goal. Everything she did is for that purpose. Although it results to her being detached, that's what I like... more>> more.

Mature atittude. Like one of the reviews says, she isn't like those other FL that is originally 20-40 before rebirth but with a teeny atittude.

What I love the most:

She accepts the ancient life and live with its rules.

Male Lead. Finally a male lead that isn't head-over-heels for the FL.

A MALE LEAD WITH LEGIT ANCIENT TIMES THINKING

Spoiler

Has a lot of concubines, gets them pregnant.

Sees women as tools (I guess it'll change in later chapters)

Power and scheming is everything

[collapse]

I honestly don't get the hate for him. Though his atittude is a douche, his atittude and view is realistically aligned with ancient times.

You want a doting/sweet ML? Nope.

Not love sick!!!!!!!! You can't tell how happy I am that I finally get a ML that isn't love sick with FL.

At this chap, the ML is just interested with FL. Just interested. Still a long way to being in love.

Sees his goal clearly (throne ????)

Characters/ Schemings

I've read some raws and I'd say besides those legit cannon fodders, most characters are smart and calculative.

It's not like those usual novels where only the main characters are smart and everyone else is s*upid.

At some point, FL got calculated too and suffered but that's what make it more of an amazing novel. <<less

Phenomenal story. I actually cried, despite the ending being overall happy. I'm sad it's over, but I'm also sad after reading the author's note for the truth behind the story. She said she originally planned for a tragic ending but made it happy after being influenced by readers. I'm happy with the story, but even writing this review is bringing me to tears as I think about the suffering the two main leads endured to get to this point. The translation is fantastic and I love that the translator has... more>> extra notes at the end of the chapters that get you thinking more deeply about parts you may have missed or motives behind certain character's actions. This story is also hella long so I appreciate the notes that remind us who people are or from where certain scenes are referenced again. I really loved this story even more because of the translation.

I know people have gripes with the ML, but please don't let those reviews turn you away from this story. The translator warns us that for the first half of the novel, the ML shouldn't be seen as a ML. His reasons for doing the things he did become apparent as the story progresses and when he falls for our female lead, he falls hard. It's a slow burning and realistic love. The male lead suffers for his treatment of our female lead and I genuinely believe he's earned his redemption. All the characters are fleshed out with understandable motives, unlike some Chinese novels I've read where it's so confusing how relentlessly ruthless they are against the main characters for just plot. The male lead and female lead are sooo smart. And their adversaries are intelligent too (well most of them lol). And lastly, I love that all the actions made have consequences. The female lead is smart, but she isn't someone who all her plans are infallible and her point of view is extremely limited as a woman living in the courtyard so she sometimes isn't a reliable narrator when it comes to things related to politics/the royal family. <<less

The plot was nice, the FL is good, realistic and there is no OP as is common in transmigration genres, BUT... but the ML is just..I get it it's ancient times but s*um is s*um ancient or modern and this ML is the worst. but then he turns around taking turns sleeping with his concubines not caring about his newly wedded wife and expects her to understand and be magnanimous and when she is he has a cold war before he thinks she doesn't care. And all the wives and concubines when they love him to death he does care at all and find them all annoying and clingy but wants the transmigrated FL because she no longer loves him. Then when they do love him he feels tired and annoyed of their love and expects them to understand but then again feels angry when they do understand because he feels they don't love him and this keeps repeating... what the hell does he want? The ML can get jealous when his wives just speaks with other men constantly feeling they will cheat on him. But if they get jealous then they are narrow minded not virtuous and all that crap.. on top of all that he uses childish tricks like trying to hurt their feelings or sleeping around with other people to gain the fl's love... like even god can't take the ML any longer. At first the FL didn't care at all even though the author tried to shove him down our throats. If she remained indifferent throughout and there was no romance with the ML then it is still a decent story. But later she falls in love with the ml?? Like where did the cool, modern 21st century FL go?? It's like the author tried to whitewash the ML and forcibly tied the romance. It left a really bad taste in my mouth. The translator translated really well but the comments rationalising the ml.... anyway you would have to have a really different mindset to like the ml.. us ordinary people can't. The ML is till date THE worst character I have read or seen in novels or series/movies. I wish I could get back the time I wasted reading this horrible novel...I really don't say this about any novel because I love books but trust me.. this is horrible.😭 <<less
