I had a hard time getting through the beginning. It was so annoying and frustrating seeing the way the ML acts. The only thing that kept me going was sthe translators comment that you should at least get through the first 5 to 10% of the novel. Even then, I was waiting for it to get butter. But it just doesn't. The translators notes and people spoilers in the comments got me going so far but now I'm on ch 221 and I read the comments and I'm done. I... more>> can't do this anymore.

The MC and ML don't have a typical romantic relationship. The ML has a whole harem and the MC doesn't have feeling for him so she just watches his harem from the side lines. She doesn't even hesitate to send someone to the MLs bed if if benefits her. Which makes sense ig since she doesn't even like him and just wants to go back home to the present.

If you can handle the ML having his nice big harem and the relationship between the ML and MC which diverges from the typical romance, have fun reading this. I've lost my patience and motivation. <<less

I have a mixed feeling about this novel. Its a good novel. But I reeealllly hate the general (or the marquess.. whatever), ML and even the monk. And poor their son. I regret read this novel hahahahaa... This is the first novel where I didn't even read the extras. Every single one of it (the extras). In truth, everything that happens in the novel doesn't have to happen IF that general didn't choose to side with the 2nd prince. If he choose to be with the prince (i think is... more>> the 3rd prince, I forget) from the MC aunty everything will be okay. Beside, his sister married with MC brother! Which is a cousin from the 3rd prince and then the 3rd prince will become the emperor even not for a long time. What a ST*PID decesion made by the general!!! Because of his bad choice the MC family beheaded, even his brother in law almost beheaded too, while his sister was pregnant!! I HATE that general! And in the end????? The one that became the emperor is the 3rd prince younger brother the 4th prince! Which is still the cousin of the MC and MC brother. So st*pid, really really st*pid general. Because of this MC and ML lost so much. Even their son!!!! I regret reading this novel. <<less

I enjoyed this very much. The romance was slow to pick up but excellent, and the characters are excellent and well-rounded.

10/10 for believable character growth - very often a s*um MMC will turn around so quickly that it's hard to believe, but in this case the change was slow enough to be believable and was handled very well.

Also the extras made me cry. But like, a happy kind of crying.

It's 4.8 stars for me.

I actually really like this one. The only problem is too long. It could be shorter. At one point, I nearly dropped this when it started to feel dragging. If I'm not mistaken, it's when she hid her identity as a man. I ended up continuing because I was already in the middle of the story and too curious about the ending. The author did a good job with a strong start that made me so invested about the ending. Glad I didn't drop this one.... more>> It's a great story overall. I enjoyed the ride!

I've seen low ratings due to the likeability of the characters, and it's true that they are not likeable, especially that ML. He is without doubt one of the scummiest of all main leads I've seen so far. And the FL, despite being the MC, despite how smart and entertaining she is, the FL is also not someone you'll call likeable if you know the real her.

The biggest let down is probably how selfish she is, how she played everyone like instruments, to the extend that her own son's life or death was an afterthought. The novel explains that part of her indifference to other people stemmed from her denial that the world was real, that people around her were real human. She was just a bystander! In fact, even after she realised how real that world to her in actuality, her indifference was only reduced instead of completely diminished. To be fair, in the end the author revealed this story is about a long dream (hence the title!) instead of a transmigration, it's sort of justifiable that none of these people were real. I say sort of, because the dream world started to crack after some years, and this puts the ambiguity back.... so what is real and what is not real? FL was aware of the cracks, but by that time she had become so attached to this dream that she refused to wake up.

Another example of the ruthlessness and cruelty of our FL is how she played the grain market in order to prove to her new master that a country could fall by means of food instead of weapons. Thousands of people, the innocent commoners, died starving from her actions.

If we talk about unlikeable people, let's bring up the second ML. In many novels, second ML are usually portrayed as the kind and ideal heartthrobs. The second ML here, lol, isn't. He served as a comparison tool for the ML, they had different motives behind their betrayals, and it makes scummy ML's motive somehow slightly nobler.

However, if you keep your mind open, I mean by not trying to like the leads and just follow the story as it flows, then this novel is quite good. It helps that I like funny novels, I laughed a lot reading the FL's antics, her inner thoughts and shamelessness are really entertaining.

I am giving this 5 of 5 not because this is perfect, in fact this is far from perfect, but the story and it's delivery in general is very enjoyable, enough to make up for the less than stellar parts.

There are some boring parts, like how the c*ckroach-like Wen Wan keeps coming back and after the milionth times, I started to feel she is boring. Her tenacity is admirable, she's the kind that won't die even if you spoon-feed her rat poison. There are parts that are too unbelievable, like how easily the FL gained the trust of her new master after the complete fall in the 1st part, and how quickly she returned to being wealthy and influential.

One other interesting thing about the novel is FL's transformation. She was a modern girl with modern ideas and plenty of contempts towards 'the ancients', and she ended up as one of the main players of the 'ancient-style atrocities'. The novel shows the gradual lost of her modern style humanity and civility as she sunk deeper and deeper into the murky politics and survival games. Interestingly, you'll see how the ML transformed the other way around, from a total cold-hearted s*um to a lesser s*um who had accepted some of the modern ideas that FL demanded from him.

I am rambling, because I do like this novel. It worths reading, just don't get attached to the character. There is almost no kind character here.

For some reasons I don't like the extras, but it's necessary to skim through them for some closures. <<less

read this quite a while ago so this is based off of memory but one of my all time favorites based off of that! The author is super hilarious and though the subject matter gets quite serious (as most of these boudoir retribution novels do), the witty one-liners the MC randomly drops absolutely kills me. Not only that, but (i remember) the translation quality (being) wonderful. There's so many beautiful lines that the author drops that I feel like were done justice to by the translators.

Personally, I don't like the novel. I'm going to try to get past the 300 chapter mark when people say it picks up. The ML is completely inept in handling his harem affairs. The second ML is so much better that it is extremely disappointing that they didn't end up together.

The book isn't bad. The translation is pretty good, the story is well done. It's just very depressing and I can't see why it ends up as a romance.

I couldn't stop reading because of all the dog blood. It was infuriating a lot of the time because of the ML, but I couldn't stop. I kept waiting for him to get his comeuppance. Sometimes it was really hard to hang in there. But he's a charming rogue and I couldn't help forgiving him. He knows that the women he loves are schemers and do horrible things, but he loves them anyway. In the case of the MC, he will do anything to protect her. At the end, he... more>> becomes a bit henpecked. You have to read the side stories for that.

If you can't stand the ML anymore, I suggest reading a bit in the beginning. Then skip to around 308 or 310. Part 2 starts shortly after. That's the fluffy love story part and where the ML is put through the wringer.

The harem intrigue and politics are fascinating. Character development is outstanding. The ML is a pragmatic, "end justifies the means" type of person. They're all flawed people. Just some are more horrible than others.

The author originally intended this book to have a bad ending, so there's sad parts. However she decided to go with a happy ending. <<less

I hate this shit.... what is this... how is this acceptable... I had to give good stars or else my comment would be lost in the depths of other bullsh*t positive comments. So the ML... he dont respect women, he dont see women as human beings, they are as trivial as objects in his eyes with a price tag and this includes all women around him.. his wife, his concubines even his sister and mother although their price tag has a higher value so he treats them well.

He does not... more>> like his og wife.... ya'll might say he hasnt beat her which really shouldnt be a valid point, but he is mentally torturing her which is as bad as physical ab*se. He doesnt even know how to ct decent to the women he sleeps with... he only knows how to disrespect them, put them down and mentally torture them. When our MC transmigrated he did notice her change and started liking her a lil cuz she didnt like him... this man is sadomasochistic. And how come no one finds it disturbing how he allows that someone to kill his unborn child of a low status concubine in the beginning of the novel, previously knowing that it was going to happen.

He probably doesnt care cuz that concubine is of lower status and she definitely wont have any problems with her husband being ok with their child getting killed right? also I want to punch his face when I learned that he took away MC's baby and brought him in the house as a child of another woman... I mean at this point why is the FL still with him.

also the end hurts me like it never has.... cuz none of the men in this story get punishment for what awful things they did to multiple women and yes all men here are tr*sh and all men here treat women in their life as tr*sh. I cannot fathom why the FL decided to saty with him and fell in love with him... he is a god awful person who in reality can never change.. but here he stops sleeping around with other women just cuz he like the FL and he like the FL just cuz she is different from the other girls.

I hate this ML and he literally deserves gruesome and bone chilling death for what he did to those poor concubines and also some of his children's death and just for existing as well. He does not deserve any happiness he got at the end of this novel.... I hope this is just the FL's toxic ass dog blood dream and I will believe in this for the rest of my life that this was a dream of hers. <<less

One of my favorite chinese novels of all time! I really dont understand why the reviews are on the lower side! For me the pacing is perfect, the story is believable and the very sweet! You have to give this one a try! I read the whole thing at least three times! There are some parts which are a bit sad but still they dont dwell on it too much. Would highly recommend!!

Just finished this novel.. Oh boy so beautiful 😍..

I really hated the Male lead.. He is real real cunning nine tailed fox person but eventually I've fallen for him.. 🥰🥰🥰 The FL is so awesome.. She is really strong and as cunning as ML..

This is my favorite novel after Its better to be empress dowger

Kudos to the translator as for the novel itself...

I can only give 1 star

The novel just doesn’t make any sense to me. It had potential but yikes... it kept going around the same circle. The ML is terrible, I felt irritated reading about his every action, didn’t understand how the FL could stand him.

If I was in her shoes I would taken him out regardless of consequence or better still she should have divorced him and gotten together with the other guy. She might have not been able to... more>> go back but she would still have her dignity.

She would have had a more fulfilling life rather acting as a s*ave and being treated poorly. In short, I had to drop the novel around when she was ordered to take care of the account after narrowing escaping death a second time from the crown prince. I just can’t continue. <<less

First! The translation? Chefs kiss! Absolutely beautiful and so helpful I loved it, the authors writing was also great but......

This story was so bad! At first I was hoping that it would be good and somehow redeem itself and I skipped over a few chapters because I could deal! The MC is so smart and so blinded by love that she “doesnt have” like ok. The ML is so cruel! I can believe that the beginning of the story is about how love isnt everything and seemingly every situation has... more>> to do with love. The SML, I was hoping he was gonna be the one male that didnt treat people like shit, but let me not get into the side story.

Every male sucks and eventually the women just submit to them like love sick fools. <<less

This is such a great novel! It had everything I wanted: a strong and clever female lead, good plot, drama. After I finished this novel, it felt like such a journey. The thing I loved most about this novel is the FL She reminds me of an empress managing the imperial harem. she's clever and strong. The ending is kinda mysterious... But in a good way I guess.

Translator did a great job. I felt like I've grown with the characters. I love this novel so much! 10/10

Not your conventional isekai or love story, but many familiar tropes. A great read for more mature readers and those fans of the historical genre, but definitely not one for those faint at heart. This story gives a realistic view of patriarchal society and harems, rounded out with male chauvinism in all its glory (see ML). A modern women is basically forced to find her way in such a society, and manages to also find true love. This story will make many modern women sad and angry, but if you hold on for the ride you will get your happy ending.

Translation Quality: excellent; Fuyu Neko is right up there with volarenovels and MistyCloud.

I can't give it 5 since he technically still has a harem (one person apart from FL who he doesn't touch) in the end and I detest harems.

I'm so happy I've picked this novel...! I've been binge reading it, it is well written, the flow is pleasant, and the translation is of good quality !

I was discouraged at first by the negative reviews, but I'm grateful I read it nonetheless !

Ofc, ML isn't a blissful typical hero, has to manage a harem, doesn't fall in love immediately with MC... Characters are grey here, no one is absolutely perfect, also the novel is heavy on politics.

Full of drama!! Betrayal!!

The MC was the best protagonist ever! She's not the invincible MC but she's incredibly intelligent and practical about her situation. Not only that she's very aware of the ML's shortcomings. She does not easily fall for him.

As for the ML at the start he is undoubtedly chauvinistic as he has been taught to see multiple women with a man as normal. He sees that the woman has to adapt and tolerate him being with other women. There's great pleasure in seeing him be surprised at the... more>> MC being so self-reliant.

The side characters are full of life and are very distinctive. You will love them at their best and cry with them when the situation is at it's worst. Even the most daunting villains are pretty pitiful.

There's also huge twists in the plot. This story really never stops surprising you. <<less

Hmmm... I'm a bit conflicted but I decided to skew my rating up higher anyways. I can see why people would dislike this novel because it is very unlike the usual lovey dovey ancient china transmigration tropes. Still, I enjoyed the ride even though I quickly realized I had already read this novel.

Warning to readers or future ones: this is not a fun novel in any way. The characters are all flawed and get very dirty. No one is pure and certainly none of them exhibit the characteristics of very... more>> one dimensional brainless canon fodders (for the most part). They get hotheaded and make s*upid decisions while other times being very cold when they should be overcome with emotions like love. While the characters are all very human, unfortunately none of them are really likeable, even the MC. Zhu Yurun may be a nice cinnamon roll for some but I found her kind of foolish and not my type. Still, it was a very interesting read about the realistic aspects of ancient china.

The realism is particularly what I liked, and genuinely how capable the MC was even though she suffered a lot of setbacks. It's ancient china. It is very unlikely for a harem to not exist, and expecting the male lead to immediately abandon all of his other concubines for love is ridiculous. He was rightfully suspicious when Nie Sangyu first changed and struggled a lot with outer/inner politics. I'm not saying I like the ML, but he's not a complete piece of scum. He was a product of his time which is fair because honestly none of the guys in the story were great at all. They were just raised to be like that. Also, it was interesting that MC actually did get involved with politics and did not just stay fighting other concubines in the backyard. My one problem is how quickly it turned into a romantic story. Suddenly they were just being really nice and trusting with each other, which seems a bit weird considering all the treachery from the past. Also, Sangyu returned to her world but then goes back to ancient china. Since it was done impulsively, I wonder if she regrets it a lot.

It's a very fresh and interesting take on ancient china. It's not a fun read, but it is thought provoking. I read this novel for the plot and the drama filled storyline, but certainly not for the romance. <<less

Where do I even start?

First things first, the translator for this novel is SO GOOD. Much lighter on the Chinese terms which I know some people like. The translator is especially good at reminding readers of characters/plot events which I thought was nice. I will say though, the story had a small-ish amount of characters, especially considering the dozens in other c-novels.

This story was a journey, I binged it in like a day and cried several times and I hardly ever cry. I could've just been overly emotional that day... more>> though, but STILL. Anyway, I rated this five stars just because of my high enjoyment/interest in this story.

There were several certain plot schemes/things that I just didn't enjoy or agree with. Especially concerning the marquis and how he handled their home life, situation, whatever. This story is quite heavy on schemes/political drama and especially conflicts in the 'harem', so if you're not into that...

ML makes me feel complicated, I guess? I do think our ML had development and in the end, deserved FL but that's up to you to decide for yourself. From my mindsets and beliefs now, I feel that he's worthy of her despite being flawed but doesn't that just make them more realistic?

I especially loved/hated the side stories because some made me tear up—which is a testament to the authors/translators skills! To conclude, I recommend!! <<less

This was a journey that I didn't sign up for. I was just searching for some light hearted fluffy transmigration romance novel with overdramatic cliches but this was a slap of reality. It's so well written and true. It's really reality biased. It's undoubtedly a well written and great story. It doesn't have fakeness but very real picture of real ancient china with character that expresses the story really well but that being said I hate ML. I hate that jerk, son of a b****. He is so real and... more>> reasonable that I can't refute his actions but his actions are of a damn jerk, I hate him but the story is so well written. Anyway I have come to conclusion that this is a masterpiece but just not my cup of tea, I just prefer romance novel with fluff and cliches, this is a bit on angsty side. <<less
