As the grandmaster of demonic cultivation, Wei Wuxian roamed the world, hated by millions for committing acts of necromancy. Overthrown by the powerful clans he had attempted to subjugate, Wei Wuxian is supposedly killed by his shidi in order to save the cultivation world.

Restored to life in the body of Mo Xuanyu, the local cut-sleeve lunatic, in order to exact revenge on his abusive relatives, Wei Wuxian quickly finds himself spiralling back into his old life when he’s taken away by the cold-hearted, stern, and ultimately quite boring Lan Wangji – who might be harbouring warmer feelings than contempt. Perhaps of the…romantic kind?

But despite his new beginning, Wei Wuxian begins to unravel a decade and a half long mystery that is set to undo the very fabric of the cultivation world as they know it.

A mysterious, action-packed thriller of a ride, this is a journey you won’t want to miss!

This is the first English Translated Chinese novel I read and also the best one. So I think I owe it a review.

I read this novel after watching The Untamed. I have to commend the series for giving justice to the book. The actors are both awesome and they were able to give justice to the characters and also they were able to deliver the feel of having unambiguous relationship pushing the limits of the Chinese censorhip. I came here to find out their real relationship without the any censorship... more>> and I didn't get disappointed.

The plot:

It is really thick. It leaves you the question of what is right and what is wrong?Who is right and who is wrong? Does the intention justify the means? Can we forgive and forget and move forward after all that's been said and done? Is the unorthodox way wrong just because because everyone thinks it is wrong? It is all about family, friendship, envy, hatred, greed of power, trust, love, and loyalty. And how gossip and malicious intent can ruin a person.

Characters

Wei Ying - is an amazing MC with a strong sense of right and wrong. He got principles and do everything to fight for what he thinks is right. He will sacrifice his status and comfortable life to fight for justice. But he's not perfect. He made mistakes and paid heavily for it too. In the end, I'm just happy he was able to settle down and live happily with his lifetime partner.

Lan Zhan- is the best ML. I can only imagine the pain he went through waiting for 13 years searching but not finding. After rereading this book I can feel how much happiness he feels when he heard the flute playing his composition. The moment he locked eyes with Wei Ying, I can feel his longing. All the small and big things he did for Wei Ying when he returned. Tolerating Wei Ying's craziness and shamelessness. Fighting side by side with him against everyone. Sticking by his side in despite of everything. I can feel how much he regretted not being with Wei Ying on his toughest time and not being able to save him. My heart breaks for him.

Jiang Chen- I got mixed feelings for him. Sometimes I like him but sometimes I hate him. His jealousy and envy get the better of him. Sometimes I just pity him. But I cannot blame him. Being continuously compared to someone and comes out falling short all the time can really cause inferiority complex. Plus his pride and responsibilities as a sect leader is at stake too. I can say that he is a complex character.

Jiang Li- is the best sister ever. I think it would be disrespectful not to mention this so good hearted character. She is like a soft hearted and kind. Everything about her is good. Her death is the most heartbreaking.

Other characters:

Almost every single character was fleshed out in this book. They have amazing background stories. There are reasons behind everything they do and their characters are solid and well-developed. Very few cannon fodders.

The Love Story

It is well developed. It is indeed slow burn but it is so worth it. The start doesn't show the deep feelings of the two characters. It slowly unfolds. You can see how the MC invaded the ML's quiet world leaving him no choice but to look at him. MC falling in love with the ML is also so wonderful to watch. He fell inl slowly but irrevocably. Their journey to their happy ending is really rough. It is so beautiful. In the end, I just want to say give Lan Zhan his Wei Ying he deserves him. And Wei Ying needs to be happy too. He had done enough for everyone.

What I had difficulty with:

The only thing I had problems with are the names. It can really be overwhelming. Besides the fact that there are many characters, each character can also have up to three names. I suggest you write a character relationship diagram and write all the names of each characters there. It will also help to watch the TV series so you can put faces on the names of the characters. Besides the actors are all good looking and their looks and characters coincides with the way they were portrayed in the books.

I know my review is very long. I want to justify my five star rating. <<less

Honestly, I have always ignored bl novels until I gave a shot at MDZS and I gotta say I fell into a deep ditch and I don't want to crawl out ever.

Everything about the novel is so well designed that it left me speechless and it's a fact that I read it more than five times already. The romance between the MC and ML was not too much and their history is heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. Same goes for all other supporting characters.

World building was immaculate, so... more>> was the development of the characters. Their good, their bad, their highest spot and rock bottom was all just and accurate. The romance, humor, dark fantasy and family drama actually left me wanting more.

And the ending was too beautiful that I don't have any words to describe the happiness that I felt for Wangxian. After years of seperation and yearning they were together at last.

I have to read the novel two times to fully understand all the characters and their actions in depth. The number of female characters were less but they left quite an impression.

All thanks to the amazing and super awesome author for creating such an amazing work. Not just MDZS but I'm a huge fan of TGCF as well. I'm not from China but as a fellow Asian I gotta salute you. <<less

My favorite author by far. TGCF and MDZS will forever hold a place in my heart. Fair warning, the drawback after finishing this book is intense. You will find yourself mourning for the main leads while also mourning for the supposed to be villains. You will fall in love with everyone and never get over Wangxian. I can't get over this even after a year of reading. Still stuck on it.

Edit: My stars review is a little messed up in this post, but. 4.9 stars. I would give it 5, but the long and sudden flashbacks threw me off a little.

I had been putting off this story for so long. Everyone kept saying it was great, but I never got that hit of, "Oh, I NEED to read this". BOY WAS I WRONG. 3 chapters in, and I got s**ked into the gigantic whirlpool that is Founder of Diabolism. The world building is exquisite, nearly all the major/minor characters have... more>> a complete backstory that makes you just feel for even the DOUCHIEST, I-WANT-TO-TRANSMIGRATE-INTO-THIS-STORY-AND-KILL-THIS-MOTHERF*CKER types of people. ONE WARNING. ⚠️ BE READY FOR A GOOD F*CKING CRY. The tragedy in this story defies all common sense, and it makes of mess of you emotionally. <<less

My First Bl novel. I have read all 3 novels of MXTX and this one So far, is the bestest (because of chemistry between couple). I would love to re-reading the same story from ML (Lan Zhan) point of view.

I freaking love everytime Lan Zhan call "Wei Ying". It just carries so many emotions. The Drama and Donghua did a great job with the voices...... I am so Addicted to it.

It has some plot holes like many other novel. There are also a lot many question left unanswered. I was... more>> really hoping those questions to be clarified or answer but it didn't, but regardless it was great.

Lastly, To Author; what is THE NAME OF THOSE TWO RABBITS. I seriously can't move on from this. Why! Why tease us when you never plan to tell us the name *tch <<less

One of the best novels I have ever Read. This is standard I except from novels. Honestly this deserves the anime and drama which was created based on it.

The characters have so-much depth and not one character that is mentioned has a boring characterization. Each and every character, even the cannon-folders have certain amount of depth to them. The characters are so well-thought out that you can't even hate the villain in the story. They all have reasons for they did.

The plot is well balanced in the mystery, twist, romance... more>> and actions. The novel has certain flow to it, which we can not find in a lot of books. The descriptions are amazing and the whole plot which has shock to it.

100% recommend it. <<less

I cannot begin to describe the wonderfulness that is MDZS. I actually first completed the novel over half a year ago and rn I'm still stuck in the hellhole of a fandom and since then have reread the actual book 3 times plus watched all the adaptations..... so yeah. Should give you a sense of how damn good it is.

For starters, there are literally no flat characters. Even the side characters each their own personality and are very enjoyable to read. No villain is a pure villain, they all have... more>> their own backstories which actually make sense and coincide with their actions. I'm not going to get started with the MCs because a) there are other reviews and b) I won't be able to stop myself from expressing my love which will probably cause this review to turn into an essay.

Another thing is that every single chapter is interesting. There are no sentences or paragraphs there simply to fill the space. The author makes each of her words carry forward the plot, and amusing to read. There has never been a point in the entire novel that I have felt bored. Even the "filler" arc was beautifully executed with its own set of characters and backstories. I'm calling it a filler because it literally has almost nothing to do with the main plot, but honestly the term feels insulting considering the others under its name *coughs NARUTO coughs*

In short, go read it. Please. There's a reason for its high rating. <<less

Loved it. Especially the way the MC and ML slowly fall for each other. Also loved the mystery and suspense. What interested me the most was the romance in the middle of horror though!!!

Spoiler

Especially when wwx confesses (that is shouts that he wants to sleep with lwj) when he is literally a hostage in the hands of the enemy who can slice off his neck if he wishes to. He doesn't get the chance too because like everyone else present at the scene, he is so shocked by wwx's confession to lwj that he let's go of him in his shock!!!

[collapse]

Yes, there's pain..... lots of it..... but if you stick out till the end, the satisfaction you get is indescribable. It's like the novel has healed the reader in the process of healing the protagonist.

Spoiler

WWX suffered a lot but never complained once. He always remained smiling no matter what. Despite the injustice done to him, he never held it against the person who wronged him. The only times he actually lost control and went berserk was when his family was harmed. He regretted a lot of things though his reason for doing them in the circumstances were justified.

[collapse]

A must read for those who love horror, suspense, mystery and slow burn romance,

Spoiler

like for real, WWX is the most oblivious person I have ever seen. It took him two lifetimes to figure out that LWJ was in love with him. He's still my favourite character though.

This is the most beautiful thing I've ever read.

I love the author's writing style and the fact that she writes both the normal, reincarnation, and transmigration genres. Every story, no matter which, is a solid 5 stars and there are next to no plot holes, where everything would always have an explanation behind it.

Yes, there are some confusing parts, but I got through.

My biggest mistake might've been reading this as my 2nd cultivation novel because I understood next to nothing. Also, the flashbacks may be a little irritating for those... more>> who're only interested in the romance. However, it's all part of the amazing plot, so bear with it for a little and I'm sure everything will slowly start to unwind! <<less

Best story ever period.

I've never been so invested in all major characters & plot. But I will say that world more building on top of what we got would be great.

After finishing the story and looking back on certain events, my eyes are never dry. I've consumed all forms of this novel adaptation and it never gets old, I just get more emotional as I get to experience all the events again and again with the retrospect knowledge of why a character made the choices they did.

Such a fantastic story... more>> and I hope more people will get to experience why this story is so beloved! <<less

I suggest you guys to read the comic, anime and the live drama named untamed as well. Its that good lol. No wonder its the highest rated yaoi novel here. I love how the author gave backstories on almost all the characters and they’re not just there for the protagonist for a few chapters and be forgotten. You may be confused in the beginning chapters with all the names and flashback happening but the characters and the stories are all linked together and it starts to make sense later.

Update: After reading the story twice (once to figure out the plot, the second to enjoy the characters) and watching the drama (loved the music, visuals, actors and much easier to tell everyone apart and understand the backstory), I'd give the story 5 stars. I'd recommend watching the drama first, as there's a long detective mystery plot to enjoy and it'd make it easier to tell the characters apart in the novel if you'd watched the drama first.

The plot is told largely in long flashbacks, so let me lay it... more>> out chronologically: Wei Wui Xian, the main character, is the beloved child of two cultivators. As a child, he is orphaned and lives on the streets. He is found and taken in by the Jiang Sect where he lives a naughty, relatively carefree life. At age 16, he joins other disciples to study at the Lan Sect, where he meets Lan Wang Ji, the other male lead. Wei Wui Xian is very naughty, smart, and shameless. Lan Wang Ji is icy, controlled, and rule-bound. The two are equally intelligent and skilled in cultivation.

Spoiler

At age 18, Wei Wui Xian stands up to the despotic dominant Wen Sect. Using him as an excuse, the Wen Sect massacres the Jiang Sect and throws Wei Wui Xian into the Burial Mound to die. While the Wen Sect rules the world, Wei Wui Xian returns with amazing necromantic powers and kills the Wen Sect members.

Later, when Wei Wui Xian stands up to the now dominant Jin Sect for their cruel despotic behaviour, he is black-balled and shunned as evil. Soon, the other Sects come to eliminate him too.

13 years later, in Chapter 1, Wei Wui Xian's soul is reborn into the body of another person, and he again walks amongst the cultivators he knew...

As he slowly remembers the past, those closest to him realize his identity and past misunderstandings are fixed. Jiang Cheng realizes his hatred was misplaced. Wei Wui Xian realizes Lan Wang Ji loved him all along. The cultivation world discovers who the real villain is, and Wei Wui Xian clears his name and lives happily ever after.

The last 13 chapters are extras - sweet epilogues and short flashbacks

[collapse]

Warning: gore. The story detailed fierce corpses (zombies), gory corpses, ghost puppets, ghouls, headless corpses, handless corpses, dismembered corpses, lipless corpses, decomposing corpses, corpses piled in lakes, corpses piled into hills, corpses interred within walls, etc. They really toned down the gore in the drama.

Warning: flashbacks. About half of the book consists of short and long flashbacks as the backstory is slowly revealed.

Warning: names. There are a lot of pinyin names, confusing alias names (as there are titles, courtesy names, and birth names), and similarly named people in each clan, so it took a while to figure out the characters.

The relationship between the Wei Wui Xian and Lan Wang Ji was so, so sweet. They're an unusual couple because they are so evenly matched and their opposite personalities are perfectly suited to each other. The smutty chapters at the end were extremely smutty. Wei Wui Xian and Lan Wang Ji are the cutest couple, especially in the scenes where
Spoiler

Wei Wui Xian is shamelessly and happily teasing Lan Wang Ji into losing control because Wei Wui Xian enjoys angry Lan Wang Ji so much

. After all the backstory angst, it was so wonderful to see them so happy together. By the end of the novel, I was just enjoying their relationship, and had totally forgotten the mystery/corpse/politics/tragedy from the rest of the novel. <<less

I can't stress enough how beautiful this book is, the plot, the characters, the setting are all so well done.

There were times I wished the flashbacks were shorter but actually they are as enjoyable as the main timeline (just much more heartbreaking). Don't let them stop you from reading.

Tip: keep close a character mastersheet because their 2-3 names (birth name, courtesy name, title) are gonna confuse you ?

PS: the donghua (anime) adaption is highly recommended as well! Beautiful art and OST. There are some minor changes of course, as well lot less BL, but still you can't miss it!

PPS: there's also a live action drama called "The Untamed" (you'll fall in love with the actors 100% guaranteed). <<less

One of my very first BL novels, and one of my very first xianxia novels, so it's hard not to feel partial when this story was my gateway to the genre. Even now, I'm hard-pressed to find a BL xianxia story as memorable and impressive as MDZS in its world-building, character development, and subtle foreshadowing.

It’s not a bad novel. In fact, I really liked it. There’s just one thing that made me lose interest. There are plenty of flashbacks/backstories. It isn’t necessarily bad. In fact, it is a good thing on some books. But if you use it to frequently, people just get tired of going back and forth. All I wanted to know was what happened next. But the constant moving isn’t for me.

This is my first review, as the honor is deserved by the first BL and Asian novel I read, and honestly, I am hands down taken by it. I never imagined that a BL could have so much plot and character development.

This story is not only about the slow but beautifully developed relationship of the MC and ML, but about so many other forms of relationship of platonic love, hatred and everything in between.

This story is like a mirror to the society and some individuals. No wonder so many could... more>> empathise themselves with some characters. The characters and their personalities were so vivid and different, it felt as if they were just next to me, as my friends.

This is an emotional rollercoaster, and accompanied by striking characters, no wonder it made me laugh, get angry, go "kyyuuun" with the fluff and indeed has moved me to tears at times.

This story has broken many traditional BL tropes, to a more realistic one. Which was something I NEEDED lol

As for the plot, READ IT! And we can go on talking about it forever. <<less

This was my first BL novel. And the plot is SO GOOD. I love both WWX and LZ. They are so cute and righteous. The way that they solve problems is awesome. The romance is honestly better than some of the shoujo novels I read. I also love the side characters like wen ning and lan sizhui. Almost all of them have their own sad pasts and their characters are so adorable. As the story progress, the characters really develop (unlike some novels).

overall, GO READ THIS NOVEL.....

What can I even say about this novel. It is heart wrenching, moving, adorable, and such a beautiful creation. I love this novel so much I can't even remember how many times I have gone back and reread it while waiting for the translations to update. Honestly never read anything so well written before that has everything that I can wish for. This is marked down as yaoi, but even if you aren't a fan of yaoi; you can still enjoy this novel to it's fullest extent. I love each... more>> and every character. Even the antagonists! They are all beautiful and I hope there would be a physical copy of the book soon. I would like to have one so bad! <<less
