As the grandmaster of demonic cultivation, Wei Wuxian roamed the world, hated by millions for committing acts of necromancy. Overthrown by the powerful clans he had attempted to subjugate, Wei Wuxian is supposedly killed by his shidi in order to save the cultivation world.

Restored to life in the body of Mo Xuanyu, the local cut-sleeve lunatic, in order to exact revenge on his abusive relatives, Wei Wuxian quickly finds himself spiralling back into his old life when he’s taken away by the cold-hearted, stern, and ultimately quite boring Lan Wangji – who might be harbouring warmer feelings than contempt. Perhaps of the…romantic kind?

But despite his new beginning, Wei Wuxian begins to unravel a decade and a half long mystery that is set to undo the very fabric of the cultivation world as they know it.

A mysterious, action-packed thriller of a ride, this is a journey you won’t want to miss!

It started out okay, maybe even great, I love the MC's personality and his relationship with ML. However, the story seems to be lagging a little because of the flashbacks. I wouldn't mind if the flashbacks weren't so long and started feeling like filler chapters as it did not advance the plot. A prequel of MC's past could probably be written from all the flashbacks and it would make a great SEPARATE novel. The novel should revolve more around the present instead of the past (although the flashbacks do play a part in the MC and ML's relationship) and the flashbacks can be shorten to more relevant parts instead of including parts that don't really matter and can be shorten to a paragraph or at least something that does not take up an entire chapter (s).

Maybe I would enjoy this novel more without the flashbacks, but some of the characters anger me so much that frankly, I really can't and don't want to continue reading.

My English is especially bad, but... This novel is so precious, well-written and exciting that I have no choice but to create some sort of small crooked review!

GDC is quite popular in Russian fandom. Starting this piece of mastercraft and realising that amount of chapters translated into Russian is very small, I somehow managed to run here) Then English version, and after all I ended searching through illegal Chinese vers with MTL... It was really fantastic!

First of all, each and every character is designed with utmost care. Ways in... more>> which they act and interact seem more natural than in another novels. Plot is also filled with exquisite planning and logic, pace is nor fast nor too slow. Different secrets popping there and here, dark past and unexpected relations of events are hooking reader's interest from beginning)

But what caused my silly heart to tremble? Of course, it's main love story. While being almost tired from all sorts of cliches which I come across in a pile of BL's, I'm feeling really refreshed by WangXian. There aren't any foolish illogical parts or "chicken blood" actions when main characters lose common sense and behave like sick; all romantic development slowly interweaves with plot. Wei WuXian/Lan WangJi interactions are marked with gentleness, mutual understanding and respect. That's my favorite part in the story, because WangXian are the best example of healthy relationship)

And also I'd like to add few words about scenery. It's really breathtaking! Cultivation world has its own charm and rules, and history of each sect is interesting, especially cultivation methods. For a while I even wanted to transmigrate here, but then I remembered all these zombies, blood and sect disputes... Too dangerous!-_-||

So I definitely recommend this book to all of readers) <<less

So far, this novel is extremely good. The characters are well rounded and seem real rather than just being a 2D gong and shou. The author makes you anticipate what's going to happen and the plot is just... wonderful.

Coupled with the awesome translation work, it's too good to be passed on. The anime is just ?

I like it even more than legendary master's wife and maybe a tad bit more than FoD. Anyways please see read thiss

EDIT: after the initial infatuation, I have deeply thought about the plot of this novel and LMAO. well... ok lots of plot holes everywhere. Really feels like the author just gave up on finishing the novel near the ending, which is a real shame, because there's plot points and details and personalities so carefully and tenderly rendered - that it's like, why not spend more time making it a great story? Jing guang yao's story makes me unsatisfied. Wei wuxian's 3 months in the corpse mountain^TM makes me unsatisfied. Overall,... more>> if I had to rate it again, I'd give it 3 stars.

I LOVE IT!!

I binge read all of it in a week. The pace is good, and and engaging, and you're always kept on your toes by the plot. This is a really good BL novel that can rest on it's plot alone. The romance is a plus, but soon you get really invested in individual characters, and overarching who-dun-it plot. MC is also such an enjoyable character - every scene he's in is just hilarious or turns out the unexpected.

I also love the resolution (or lack thereof) of the overarching plot. There's a lot of questions unanswered, and it just feels so realistic and more interesting than a "THIS IS THE VILLAIN AND HE WAS BAD." Everything was complex in a compelling way and all the villains left me feeling some sort conflicted way.

And I really love the relationship between MC and ML. It takes time to get them together, but it's hilarious and heart-wrenching, and refreshing. <<less

The main reason I stopped at around chapter 20, was partially because how confusing it was. I had to reread a couple of times to actually even understand who was who and what was happening in the Ghost Hand arc. The momentum that kept me reading was the MC, who was, in all, absolutely hilarious. Even though the translator was really good and the MC was considerably charming, by the time the MC started traveling with the Ml, I got tired of trying to decipher the text and got too... more>> impatient to actually be invested in the plot. However, I actually am in the middle of reading the manhua and waiting for the anime to come out. I would recommend it to you if you're patient enough to remember the three names of most of the characters in the novel. <<less

Come onn, this is a classic. I have only love for this novel, and if I gave anything below 5 solid stars, I'd be lying (and my moots would mu*der me in cold blood).

Honestly I don't have the strength to write a full review at the moment, but give it a shot if you like mysterious, cultivation and a proper slow burn (emphasis on the burn).

MC is really shameless and funny. He's also the vigilante type? A good deal of the novel, he refused to bow down to unjust authority,... more>> and takes care of villains by himself.

MC's family problem: why are they always killing off his family? Help meeee I cried mostly due to this.

This was the first danmei I read, it was a couple of years ago when I was into chinese cultivation manhuas and also japanese BL. I stumbled upon the the 魔道祖师 's donghua that had just released season 1 (it seemed perfect for me because it mixed boys love with cultivation). I was so curious about rest of the story that I searched for the novel. It was so good that I bing-read the novel in three days and it surprised me because I never liked reading novels.

My fave MXTX! The best!! Wiki some basics about what cultivation is before you start because the author throws you in. It's a cultivation novel so the assumption is that you know what that is before reading.

LWJ and WWX are my forever babies.

I'm simply in love with this novel.

The characters are so well-written, the world building is perfect for me (not super hyper complex nor blank), the pacing is really nice and even though there are some big flashbacks in the middle of the novel, you never get tired or bored with them.

I'm a person who loves a good mystery/investigation with some action and plot twists and I must say I found all of this here. The way it is mixed with the romance, angst and the plot itself was so natural... more>> and fresh with all of this elements perfectly balanced that I couldn't stop myself from reading one more chapter. The comedy is pure gold. Even with the main propose of the novel not being the comedy, the MC is simply hilarious and captivating. The angst and emotional moments in this story, oh boy, I don't know when was the last time that I cried so much reading a novel before. The wholesome interactions between characters, their promises, their happy times before the disaster, their sacrifices for each other... I cried in the sad moments, happy ones, romantics, in the infuriating ones... I just cried (I'm not a emotional person).

Other thing that I really loved was that everyone is/was wrong at some point. There aren't any saints in this story with complex and flawed characters
Spoiler

Like the Wen sect, they were a super dictatorial and deserved their destiny, but by going by the "eye for an eye" logic afterwards leaded to more disasters like the 3000 deaths caused by wwx on the Nightless City, that, again, leaded to more hate that ended up killing him. Since the start this novel is talking about a never ending cycle of hate that needed to be stopped at once. Everyone was at fault here and I loved how this was portrayed

[collapse]

Finally one of the things that I liked the most. The characters.

The MC (Wei Wuxian), as everyone said in other reviews, is super shameless and a very bright character. He is that kind of character that is always smiling and likes to tease and mess with people around him when he is bored, but can be serious and strategic when facing a dangerous situation. He is intelligent
Spoiler

(well, not when it comes to realizing ML's feelings)

[collapse]
and strong, but not overpower. He can solve a lot of situations alone but he knows the right time to depend on others too and acknowledge that one person can't solve everything by themselves. His self-awareness and maturity (in the present time of the novel) is refreshing.

The side characters are interesting and entertaining, even those that doesn't appear for a long time are memorable enough to be on my favorite characters list. Their dynamics, backstories, goals, and individuality are super well-written. Even the antagonists can be likable because they may be as*holes but they are so interesting and sometimes their dynamics with others are so funny that you like them. There wasn't one single character that was superficial here, some of them might not be THAT complex, but they have their own depth.

The start can be quite confusing and a lot of things and events are mentioned without any explanation in the early chapters, but everything will be slowly revealed as they progress further in the drama. The names were a problem for me as most of them have like 2 or more names/titles, but with time I got used to it as most of the characters have their individuality and relevance in the story (realizing that the first name like in "Lan WangJi" and "Jiang Cheng" the "Lan" and "Jiang" mean their sect really helped me when I started reading this, but if you are still with this same problem try consulting some character list in the internet).

The romantic aspect is somewhat subtle, especially at the start, but it grows as the story progress. It is very well-balanced with the action, angst and the other characters dynamics, so it isn't an overshadowing factor for the story. It is very fluff, wholesome and funny when it happens (OTP for sure), but it isn't reeeeally the focus of the novel, so if you are wanting to read it solely for the main couple, especially if you are not so into investigation or angst, I don't recommend mdzs for you.

The ending satisfied me, but it did seem a little rushed, like the author needed to get rid of some things and just "wow remember that? well it's already solved, don't need to worry about it ;) "
Spoiler

yes, Yin Tiger Tally, I'm talking about you

[collapse]
or the huge revelations that happens at once in a single scene because it needs to be now. I feel like some things could have been revealed sooner so it didn't have to be all thrown at the end all at once. Again, it wasn't bad nor super rushed, but the pace was a little faster than the rest of the novel (and than I like), it didn't really screwed up the ending though, it was just a sudden change of pace that bothered me a little. <<less

MDZS is my first danmei and I will always be thankful to it despite the flaws. I'm fine with the romance here but I think MDZS supporting characters stories are the reason why it stayed in mind rent-free for years. Yunmeng Shuangjie, 3zun (Venerated Triad), Gusu trio and Yi city story. When I first read this, I'm very moved by those stories I mentioned. I even binge read it and once I finished it I feel really empty. I'm so used to other BL where it focus on the romance... more>> only so I really appreciate that the author gave more thought about other characters and platonic relationship as well. That they are there not to only support the main characters but they are there because they have their own story to tell. MDZS have the most interesting complex supporting characters I encountered in danmei.

As for the MC, I do like Wei Wuxian but he can be overwhelming. He made mistakes a lot and quite reckless. He can be annoying because he can come off as arrogant and talkative because of his hero complex but that's exactly why I like him. His flaws is what made me interested in him.
Spoiler

I love that the story is about him accepting his flaws during his Yiling Laozu era and forgiving himself but he didn't regret to stand on the side of justice. Too bad his fans tend to erase what made him a good character and blame Jiang Cheng for everything. Yes, Wei Wuxian practice ghost cultivation but it don't mean his cultivation is never frowned by everyone. Wen Ning the zombie is literally there and don't forget his torture to Wen Chao. He crossed the line, lose control of his power few times and he know it. He's just dismissive about the side effects as his coping mechanism and his goal is still ghost cultivation for good use because he's still at the side of righteousness despite the few morally gray actions he did. But tbh it don't really matter to me whether the public accept him or not, what matters is his heart who know what he is and continue to fight what he believe in. For him, its not about being just righteous. He's just following his heart.

[collapse]

Lan Wangji as ML is interesting to me in the flashback but I'm sad that the story didn't explore more his character when he get together with Wei Wuxian. Like his opinion in cultivation world?
Spoiler

I don't hate him but I wish the author explore his moral stance more. I wish he speak more and we get more input from him instead of seeing him always protective and agreeing to whatever Wei Wuxian says. But this is my problem with MXTX male leads. They are usually specially made to support only the MC as if they are designed to be just boyfriend material. I prefer pair that coexist and their individuality is not watered down so I want him to be involved. I also wish he talk more to other characters that are not Gusu Lan and not related to Wei Wuxian. Him waiting for Wei Wuxian to return or grieving for a long time is contradicting his righteous nature. I'm not invalidating his grief but why he didn't do anything to find more info about Wei Wuxian's death? Its your crush you know? Just a little investigation is acceptable? Sure, he took care of Lan Sizhui but after that. There's no follow up to his plan. Like dude, you're the righteous person who appeared whenever there's trouble so why are you not stopping someone like Jiang Cheng, Jin Guangyao or Xue Yang? I wish he appeared in the main events and build relationships. Why do you have to wait for Wei Wuxian's return before you figure things out on your own? I really wish he improve his communication skills during Wei Wuxian's absence so at least we see his growth as a person. Do it for love?? Sure, he became more open to his s*xual desire toward Wei Wuxian but that's it. Nothing more. He has so many things to offer in the flashback but I'm sad its not explore. I do like tho when he said Wei Wuxian's choice of cultivation don't matter as long as its out of goodness. I think I will like him more if he has his own story uncovering about Gusu Lan's bad side and will try to change it for future generation. But he don't really do it and only focus in anything related to Wei Wuxian. He's a good love interest but as independent character? I'm afraid no. I might sound harsh and strict to his character but it all come from his lost potential that I wish explored more. On the contrary, I do like his character so I'm very disappointed.

[collapse]

As for WangXian as couple, I really do ship them okay? But the more I dive into it the more I realized their flaws as a couple. Surprisingly, I like them more when they are not together yet and before WWX received Mo Xuanyu's body because you see how different their views are as person and their small gesture of romance because I love the subtleties. I'm just not fond of their so called happy ending.
Spoiler

Wangxian living together in Gusu Lan instead of making a home somewhere on their own and forcing their way to be accepted by Lan Qiren are definitely not happy ending to me. Like people are hard on Jiang Cheng for leading the siege but Lan Qiren also play neutral few times and participated in the siege as well to protect his sect and you're fine with him? It just so awkward why Lan Qiren is okay to be part of Wangxian's life. Gusu Lan sect is not that great just like how other sect have their own bad side as well. I just believe staying in that place is not fit for Wangxian's life.

[collapse]

For me, the message of the story is the true villain is yourself and mob mentality is a scary thing. I just love that Wei Wuxian blame himself not Jiang Cheng for his own death because its true that it got out of his hand. I love that acceptance because he's no longer dismissive of the side effect of his cultivation and him being able to forgive himself for the demise of his shijie even if he's not exactly at fault here but he's very involved. If you look at the story, Wei Wuxian is able to have closure somehow (?) not because he defeated the villain but because of he know what his self wants. He don't wish others to forgive him but to follow his heart whether for justice or for romance. As for the mob mentality, we witness how simple gossips destroyed someone reputation and family. Sure, Jiang Cheng has his faults but it just sad of how things turn out. I wish happiness for the miserable angry gr*pe and his beloved nephew Jin Ling. <<less

As many of us know Mo dao zu shi goes by a few different names and has a few different versions.

The names I know it under are the following:

Mo dao zu shi

... more>> The Untamed

The Grandmaster of demonic cultivation

The Founder of diabolism

What I have read/watched:

C-Drama [Avaible on Youtube]

Spin of movie: Fatal Journey [Youtube]

Spin of movie: The Living Dead

Donghua [Avaible on Youtube]

Comic

Manhua

Novel

Note in the following review I will compare them lightly with one another but I won’t go too far in-depth about every single medium to avoid spoilers unless someone asks me to [I’m only doing the Drama, Donghua, and briefly the Novel].

In every version specifically C-Drama and Donghua with the exception of the Novel itself right in this moment, we get the story told in two vastly different ways. The C-Drama of course is limited to the budget they had available besides other factors, but that’s not my focus instead I have to note that the drama played around with the timeline of things mixing them up a bit something no one who just watches the drama will take notice of.

In this drama, we get to see another side of the characters played out by the actors [who are all amazing], and we get to see another side of the Yang sibling's past and another version of Wei Wuxians and Lan Wangji's love story. We also get to see another version of Jin Guangyoa and the Nie brothers, another change being the change with the Wens.

It’s all very emotional and brought over playfully, the change they made from the Donghua to this is astounding even more so since I can imagine that the censorship was very strict, and yet they still got through with a lot of subtle things.

Sidenote: I have heard that they first tried to make a weird love triangle between Wei Wuxian, Wen Qing, and Jiang Cheng but that Chinese fans stopped this from happening, which explains some rather awkward scenes. Really whoever thought this was a great idea clearly never read the original material since it’s based on a BL novel.

2Sidenote: The two movies are also very good, Fatal Journey is about the Nie Brothers and explains something to Nie Huisang, and The Living Dead is about Wen Ning and Lan Shizui very interesting and rather cute movie.

The Donghua is very emotional and in my opinion goes more into the complex side of the past that led to it all, here we also get to see a very different side of character relationships and dynamics. The most interesting change is how they portray Wei Wuxians struggle and suffering it’s also better portrayed due to the ability that they could in fact give him another body unlike in the Drama where they kept it with 1 actor for understandable reasons [Xiao Zhan is amazing], another worthy character portray would be Jiang Cheng, Jin Guangyao, Xiao Xingchen, Song Lan, Xue Yang and the wens. Even the Lan Brothers' complexity is being greatly portrayed.

Overall the Donghua and Drama complement each other in a very great and fascinating way, giving different perspectives towards the characters accentuating different kinds of happenings. I can only recommend watching both.

And lastly the novel, it’s just god damn I have no other words you will get thrown into it all from the beginning as if it would be a new story, not because it’s insanely different storytelling-wise [How it comes from the starting to the end point] no, but the characters? The way they are portrayed? The cruelty, suffering, pain, and overall being explicit make it very different since it’s the original [Just saying Bichen].

Some who have watched only the drama or donghua before might start to hate the character they have fallen in love with after reading the novel or they will love the character even more, all 3 mediums let you meet the characters from new give you changes sometimes subtle and sometimes like a slap to your face.

Note: MXTX seems to love to write CNC [If you don’t know what that is, google it] it’s not shown in the watchable mediums, for obvious reasons but it’s shown in the manhua and very much in the Novel. You can just skip these scenes, which I also did myself since I don’t appreciate reading or seeing CNC at least not how MXTX potrail of it. <<less

I've yet to find someone in the danmei world who writes plots better than MXTX, who consistently keeps it tied in with the CP, has engaging side characters, and gutwrenching twists. From an objective viewpoint, MDZS has the best plot of all her novels. While I personally don't find ML a very interesting character, the rest of the story makes up for him.

I only docked a star because I personally got so invested in the mu*der mystery that the (actually crucially important) flashbacks started to bore me.

Holy freak.

This story legit changed my life (a little).

I watched the TV show first and was SO CONFUSED until the last 5 or so episodes. It was a struggle getting through, but once everything started coming together I was blown away (also it was my first foray into Chinese media and culture, so I was struggling on those foundational aspects).

... more>> I moved onto the book and I haven't left since! The amount of work and forethought that went into this is INSANE. This author is next level. Seriously.

The fact that there is jumping around in the timeline's perspective but it all still slots together beautifully. The emotions and underlying tensions subtly written but still coming alive. The 5023958 unique characters that all have their own personalities (with us witnessing character growth in the dozen or so main ones), none are forgotten, and each play special roles in the plot.

There are themes that make you think. What is righteousness? Loyalty? Fealty and filial piety. Propaganda and controlled information. Challenging one's self and core values against everything you know. The pervasiveness and pureness of love.

I found myself hard in the characters of this masterpiece. I saw who I want to be and what I fight to not become. My heart ached and wept as I read parts.

The translators at Exiled Rebels Scanlations do such a wonderful job at not only translating, but also providing notes explaining the bits of Chinese culture that don't go over well.

LOVE this book. By far the best that the author has written so far. <<less

I just wanted to drop this review because some might be hesitant to read this novel because of the 95 people who gave this a 1 star vote review.

While this novel is good, it might not be understandable for readers who haven't read other xianxia novels before. (But hey, this is actually my first Xianxia & Danmei I read) so even if you've actually read a handful of Xianxia before, if the novel is confusing to you, it might not be the author's fault because it's fairly... more>> easy to understand the story flow.

It does require you to pay attention to the story flow, you also have to concentrate on understanding the context. BUT HEY! YOU REALLY WON'T REGRET READING THIS NOVEL! IN FACT, THIS NOVEL MIGHT EVEN PLAY A SIGNIFICANT PART IN YOUR LIFE AS IT DID TO MINE 🤣 <<less

I was expecting a lot from this novel and I got all my expections fullfilled. A totally page-turner which makes you yearns for more and more, while making you forget on your chores, hw and responsibilities.

I won't say the summary, only my feelings towards it. I didn't find any plot holes and I dont think if you read this, you'll find any either as you'll be too much absorbed into this novel. I liked the plot which is intriguing and even though at the start I was like why is... more>> he helping them/what does he have to do with it and etc.. I didn't let that go in the way and fully enjoyed. Later I totally forgot what I was making trouble for and even tho at the end I didn't agree why he helped them again, I fully savoured the end. And to not say about the smut🌝.

I liked all characters and they all were 3D, not shallow. Even the villains made me bawle for how touching they were. The MCs were loveable and funny, and wild in the smut. I'll fight anyone who says Jian Cheng is hateful and what not.

He sacrificed himself for MC and also needed to thank him for the golden core, while also getting his family intentionally or not killed by him. Even tho his family would had ended up in war with Wen sect in a way or another, it would had happened later.

[collapse]
And the biggest villain Jun (son of the prostitute) and Yuen Weng (?) (the boy) were atrociouses, I still cried for them. And naturally, I cried for the others as well. The stoy makes you completely obssesed with it.

I totally recommend this story but for example during summer so you don't f*ck up your routine and studies like I did (no regrets tho lmao). Oh, and pay attention to the smut as it makes you longe for more.

Edit: I forgot about the r*pe which was a total turn off but I didn't made it spoil the stars. Shame on you author for this one thing, which was totally uncalled for and unworthy of the novel!! <<less

I will not put a bad rate to this because I feel like I am just not in the good mood to read this and I haven't read that much but i'll still write this because all the other reviews just talk about the good points of this novel and I want to propose another view. I've read a lot of other yaoi light novels, I like them a lot and seing as this is one of the most respect I came to read it.

But I feel like it's just... more>> not my type.

Firstly, I don't really like stories which relies a looot on the past, and seing the others reviews and the lack of goal for the moment, I realize finding the truth about the character past is maybe the biggest point of this novel. Or I don't really want this but I want to concentrate on the present, on the future and not read a novel with 1000 flashbacks.

I mean I like a good past, it's part of a good devlopment, but for the moment this novel clearly lacks a goal, and wondering to help save people or resolving affairs like Detective Conan without a finality in the plot or discovering his past aren't good goals to me.

Moreover ;I prefer more romance oriented yaoi and this novel seems to mainly concentrate on angst, tragedy or also side characters history than the actual relationship between the two main characters (which are very easy to see but doesn't have that much of an alchemy to me for the moment)

Yes this seems to have a comic sense but... I really need a yaoi which concentrate on progressing and not reminiscing again and again.

So I'll read this maybe in a few months / years and i'll see if y opinion change.

PS : I'm french so that's why there may be faults in my review <<less
