As the grandmaster of demonic cultivation, Wei Wuxian roamed the world, hated by millions for committing acts of necromancy. Overthrown by the powerful clans he had attempted to subjugate, Wei Wuxian is supposedly killed by his shidi in order to save the cultivation world.

Restored to life in the body of Mo Xuanyu, the local cut-sleeve lunatic, in order to exact revenge on his abusive relatives, Wei Wuxian quickly finds himself spiralling back into his old life when he’s taken away by the cold-hearted, stern, and ultimately quite boring Lan Wangji – who might be harbouring warmer feelings than contempt. Perhaps of the…romantic kind?

But despite his new beginning, Wei Wuxian begins to unravel a decade and a half long mystery that is set to undo the very fabric of the cultivation world as they know it.

A mysterious, action-packed thriller of a ride, this is a journey you won’t want to miss!

Came here to read the novel after watching the drama. And now I get what people meant when they said "You must read the novel to empty the whole story". Me, a hardcore fujoshi cant ask for more. Guys, you must read other two novels by the same author. They were not anything less than this novel. Specially heaven official blessing, each character made by the author left a strong impression to me. Just want to say, no need to hesitate just read it.

Guys any novel you want to recommend... more>> for me. I am reading the old novels I read again and again. Please recommend some good stuffs. <<less

I cried a lot while reading this, sometimes there was smile on my lips but my eyes were full of tears, sometimes my heart started aching with pain. This novel is totally worth it. It may seem like a basic fantasy anime, but it has so much good content plot-wise and visually: the original novel already had an incredible story, with the humor, fantasy, side-romance, wicked people, and ridiculously good plot twists. The novel, it was an emotional whirlpool with everything blended perfectly. Once I started reading, I could not... more>> put this story down. I do have to say that I have a small soft spot for GDC because it was the first story that introduced me to the world of Chinese novels. The plot is rich, intriguing, heart-breaking, all in one. The story is gold. As some one who loves bl, I have no idea how I didn't find this novel earlier, I was on pintrest 4 days back when I saw a pin on GDC and I immediately hoped into the novel and the anime (not sure what anime is called if it is chinese) and not a day in those 4 days that I didn't cry. My eyes are now red and puffy (my mom doesn't get why) and it hurts to look at the screen! <<less

one of the best bl novels ever. There's nothing 'boring' about this novel, no fillers etc. MC and ML are just <3. MC being shameless is my new thing now. Plot is 110/10. No doubts, one of the best bl novels out there.

This is definitely the best book I have ever read in my entire life. I read it after the live adaptation, which i’m glad I did.

where to start? The characters. Exceptional. They have such amazing personality and back story which makes so much sense for every single one of them. Just reading a sentence from a singular character makes you feel the exact emotion intended. It’s a work of art in itself.

I adore the angst. There is a perfect amount of angst, making it such a tragic and heart wrenching... more>> read. However due to this, it makes the end chapters even more stunning and emotional. I cried the second time I read the book and took my time to understand it all.

the plot is perfect. Flashbacks are placed where they should be, where we accurately learn about our MC’s rise, and eventual downfall. We learn about the other MC’s emotions throughout it all. Whilst not said directly, it is heavily implied.

the extra chapters are what I find the best about it all. The chapters gain their own little plots, and we learn even more about the characters. We learn about what each sect is doing after the main story, we learn about how each person is doing after the main story. It is such a fulfilling end, especially the last sentences MXTX wrote about. In my eyes, this book has three main endings. Chapter 113, chapter 126, and a side chapter where it ends in the published version. Each ending is special in its own ways.

MDZS is the best read. It is fully immersive, and is honestly life changing. I am so glad MXTX wrote it in such detail, small details that you’ll realise at the end. More importantly, i’m glad I found it. <<less

i love this novel so much.

this is the novel that got me into xianxia/chinese novels, and honestly no regrets. the story is engaging, and how the author chose to tell the story is very unique! at first it was a little confusing (w/ all the different versions of names, jumps from past to present etc.) but worth sticking to.

what will really get you into mdzs are the characters!!! wei ying is a 12/10 human being and he deserves the world, and luckily lan zhan is there to give it. just..... more>> ugh... <<less

While the mystery sneaks up on you bit by bit, only to unravel in a shivers-worthy reveal, I feel like the novel loses some points when it comes to pacing.

This issue can be seen in MTXT's other novels (SVSSS is full of abrupt timeskips that are incompatible with a work with such a low chapter count/TGCF gets even worse than MDZS with this in that it has an entire volume worthy of flashbacks *twice*), so many would call it an stylistic quirk, but it can really take away the reader's... more>> enjoyment.

I find the MC and ML to be engaging in their dynamics, but not particularly original.

MC's gray morality is appreciated and so is the author not shying away from graphic depictions of gore and body horror.

ML is a bit boring, but does his job embodying a righteous cultivator who ends up putting his heart before Sect and Clan rules. I just wish he did something besides say monosyllables and his "silent but violent" jealousy scenes make me uncomfortable. Although this is a step up from the unstable, male yandere ML from SVSSS so maybe I should stop complaining.

About the s*x scenes? Not worthy talking about. As an irl bis*xual man I will overlook the author's bad papapa writing as the ignorance coming from a lack of experience. Also: Poor Bichen.

All in all 4/5 stars. Plot and horror elements writing are obviously MTXT's strong suits and the novel stands on its own even without the romance, which is not something you can say about most danmei novels. <<less

I got into the MDSZ fandom by first watching The Untamed. That was possibly the best decision of my life despite one little thing: I don't like the Untamed. Still don't. Yet it was the best decision of my life because one f*cking scene in the drama made me think: if a show I do not like can make me CRY (and I don't just cry because of nothing), then there's something to this plot. ... more>>
Spoiler

It was the scene where Wen Ning made JC pull out Suibian.

[collapse]

I did not like the drama adaptation because I thought Yin Iron was dumb and the whole quest a fool's quest (don't attack me) yet I watched to the end just because the beginning scene was good. And the story stuck to me like glue until I went and read the manga. And then I needed more and I went and read this. By then I already knew I liked the story, after reading this I realized how ignorant I was. This book's plot was so good that it transcended adaptations. Furthermore the stuff I didn't like in the drama Isn't in the book HA. Basically I fell in love with the real plot, characters, and the romance. Fun fact: prior to this book, I have never been into BL. Sure I've read some here and there, but I was not a fan of those stories. I'm not really a fan of romance for romance, and MDSZ isn't one of those. It's a mix of genres and a mini world. It's pretty epic.

I like this book because of the relationships more so than the romance. It covers: half-brothers, real brothers, adopted brothers, sworn brothers, disowned brothers, and the Best Sisters. Every relationship is layered and changes because of the events that happen. To be honest I was not a fan of the ending in the temple, but I overlook little things for the sake of my obsession with the other bits.
Spoiler

JGY beating JC in any way is laughable. If WWX can kill 3000 and be forgiven, a certain Nie's actions are very in the right

[collapse]
I grew attached to the characters so any bits I don't like? Sucks for me.

This story is unlike any I have read before, and I think MXTX's characterization of WWX was kind of genius. The donghua is my favorite because while the translations are excellent, it's not the original. I speak chinese but am a pathetic reader. The book is more nuanced and detailed, but LWJ's words sound too clipped in translation while in Chinese, he sounds extremely eloquent in the donghua. And I am all about the characters. Furthermore fight scenes are almost always better visually. Even the audio drama does more justice to LWJ in my opinion.

I'm bringing up all these adaptations up because if you don't want to read it, have read it and wasn't a huge fan, loved the novel, etc etc but haven't tried other adaptations... try them. The story at its base is amazingly well thought out. If you don't understand it through one medium try it in another. Don't miss out on any content of MDSZ. It's food for thought and tears. It's so so good. I can watch it more than once, I can read it more than once. I almost missed out because of my personal Opinions on the drama. MDSZ has been the only fandom I've thought about in 3 months.

Last thing: if you don't like flashbacks much, uh closest thing is the drama? it's like a solid chunk of past and a solid chunk of future. Anime is also more chunky with flashbacks. The audio drama and manga and novel are flashbacky. I recommend the donghua to english readers because the vibe and world building is easier to grasp visually. Whatever the case, MDSZ is worth your time. Absorb it through whatever medium you want to. It's a beautiful story. <<less

Wei WuXian is dead. But even death doesn't give him peace.

Hailed as the most powerful and renowned demonic cultivator, his spirit is called back by a particularly desperate Mo XuanYu, who sacrifices his body in exchange for revenge against the family that ab*ses him.

Different face, different name, but even so Wei WuXian is a genius and his talents slowly bring him to the spotlight of two people he would never want to meet again - his sworn brother Jiang Cheng who led the battle to kill him, and his old... more>> rival Lan WangJi who surprisingly doesn't resent him as much as he assumed.

I loved the entire mystery that tied this story together - the plot slowly picking up clues and piecing together a terrible truth. And as each small battle Wei WuXuian encounters, his talent and skill come into play, working seamlessly with that of his partner Lan WangJi.

Honestly, their slowly developing relationship was a wonder to read, and every flashback that helped flesh out WuXian's character and his relationships with his friends was brilliantly done.

Mostly, it was the wonder of reading such flawed and realistic characters, with strengths and weaknesses and traits that made them simply human - their choices and the consequences that follow, how picking between what is right and what is easy is not always simple - it just shows humanity at it's best.

And for that, I shall forever cherish this story. <<less

Excellent translation really does give justice to an author's work.

The story moves not just with the main characters but also with the other characters in the story. It showcase how each one of them, and their actions are closely tied on all of their fate.

I only have one regret in this story:

Spoiler

I refuse to see Jiang Cheng being a single dog at the end of the story! Give this man a loving wife!!!

Edit:

thank you K and ExR for your hardwork. Honestly, I sincerely think you guys did great.

I've never read any BL novels, they simply do not appeal to me, and thus went into this one solely for the plot despite my wariness - because the Yiling Patriarch's story captivated me - the antihero-ish of sorts characters aren't ones we come by often and by that I mean the real deal - the kind of heroes who stand by their beliefs even if it means going against what is considered right - so BL or not, I wanted to read it in hopes it would be... more>> a gem. And it truly was - a rare & precious gem.

Wei Ying was all I hoped for and so it broke my heart to see him suffer unfairly and yet despite the pain, I truly love this story.

And in between the pain his antics also made me smile.

Part pain, part happiness.

This is the kind of story that leaves an impact on a person and shall forever remain with you.

Wei Ying is, without a doubt, one of my most beloved characters - he stood by what he believed and did the right thing even when others condemned him for it and claimed he's turned to evil, when they were in fact the ones who did so.

And as you read the novel you don't care whether it's BL or not, it's the story and characters that captivate you and by the end it owns you heart & soul. <<less

I honestly don’t understand all the spectacular ratings for this book. There are moments when it shines, but many parts of the story are confusing. It seems like 2/3 of the story is flashback which isn’t bad in and of itself, but when you are in a major battle scene and the flashback occurs taking multiple chapters to conclude, then it gets monotonous. There were even flashbacks inside flashbacks... Also the names were super confusing since they were all so similar and everyone having multiple names. Then they just started... more>> throwing in characters later in the story as antagonists. The love was sweet but trying to read this novel was a big pain. There are other bl novels with a much better paced storyline. <<less

This is one of the greatest novels I've read.

It's really balanced, the world building and characters are phenomenal. You really feel for the characters and the plot builds up nicely. The back story shows us how everything builds up.

The flashbacks are kind of confusing but aside from that

It's rare to find characters who are made so well and actually are reasonable. I can even feel bad for the villain and it really speaks about society. It really shows the dangers about oppressive societies and the political struggles that people really... more>> do go through. Really shows us the world is shit, gossip sucks, and if you rebel you end up on everyone's block list. It leaves a deep imprint in you.

The main characters are also really interesting. You can see their characteristics take shape and how everything emotionally affects them. Plus its freaking hilarious and has a lot of meaning. Definitely read it, its food for the soul. I'm really picky about my books, but this one really satisfies everything. The pull is really strong and interesting.

Plus you can feel that romantic tension even when they first meet. Props to you author. <<less

I came for BL but stayed for the plot and completely fell in love with the characters (not just the main characters). Im not good at writing reviews but I recommend this 11/10 to everyone. Trust me, you can finish this in quarantine so don't go skimming through the chapters because this is totally worth the read. Btw for someone who's saying this overrated in the comments, you spelled masterpiece wrong.

This was the first novel I read, I really considered for a time my favorite, and then I just realized that it was just hype? I'm not trying to be mean but I feel like sometimes is kind of boring the interactions between the main charecters I feel like they don't get a lot of screen and the novel just focus to much on the plot and other characters without a balance (like her other work Heaven Official's Blessing) , which is fine but not really what I like

My review is a little biased because it encompasses my feelings from watching The Untamed on Netflix. So I watched The Untamed on Netflix first, and then read the novel after. After the novel, I started reading the manhua. The anime version didn’t seem as appealing so I opted out of that.

What I liked about the story in TFoD there were different layers to it. There is action, fantasy, mystery, and romance. I like smut as well, and towards the end and in the extras, there is smut, but it’s... more>> not PWP (plot what plot?) smut.

In terms of the characters, I really liked the MC’s positive yet pragmatic character. He’s not rigid in his beliefs. He’s got that right mix of mischievous with cheer.

For the ML, I liked that he was a righteous character, and there’s something very appealing about having a very black and white righteous must uphold the justice and good type character soften for the MC. Even with his righteous, he always considers the MC’s best interests at heart. In smut related matters, he never forces the MC. He is my favorite ML to date. Loves the MC, doesn’t force him, is a good guy over all, strong physically and mentally, gets along with other people.

TFoD was my first foray into Danmei and Chinese BL. I have read quite a few since then, and TFoD is still my favorite to date. I haven’t found anything that hits the spot quite as well overall as TFoD does in terms story, smut fulfillment, and emotional fulfillment.

In the extras, there is some fantasy/s*x dream related content that people may consider r*pe. I don’t consider it r*pe because it was a dream and stemmed from the MC’s and ML’s fetish. Some couples in real life engage in consensual fantasy play or use toys as such. As long as both parties are willing it’s fine. However, some people might be squirmish still. If you are, I would avoid the incense extra chapters.

I do wish there were more extras with some of the other characters, and it leaves a little feeling of longing to see relationships repaired or mended, but you can’t have everything. Definitely recommend~! <<less
