The Reader and Protagonist Definitely Have to Be in True Love

Description

An internet troll who wanted attention, the reader criticized his favorite web novel, saying: “The protagonist is dumb and the author is s*upid.”

Author: “…Got it.”

Unfortunately for him, the author actually listened to his (troll) feedback. The formerly lighthearted tale of a cute harem master suddenly became super dark and edgy. The reader could only helplessly look on as the protagonist was ab*sed and betrayed, finally embarking on the road to becoming completely evil. Everything was a mess!

After that the reader transmigrated into a strange world. How come the person in front of him looks like the protagonist (evil undead version)? Just what is going on?!

Note: Du Zhe (读者 meaning Reader) and Du Ze (杜泽 the character’s name) sound almost the same

One of the best danmei/bl story I've ever read. And I've read a whole LOT. It's also extremely romantic and I just love the MC & ML.

Spoiler

The ML starts off as very cold and paranoid which is justified seeing as he's been betrayed a lot but when he falls in love with the MC he's very romantic. (Giving him a ring and vowing that he'll destroy whatever/whomever hurts the MC, even himself.) The MC is great too, he never annoyed me which is a first since usually a BL/heroine will usually have traits that can get me irritated. (Childishness and being dumb etc.) I'm kinda obsessed with this story.

I don't understand how such garbage is being given 5 stars. After 20 chapters, there's absolutely no story! The author is only interested in spewing illegible information which is totally useless. There's paragraphs and paragraphs of unwanted stuff that it's giving a headache. But the main actions which should be in detail are actually getting over in one sentence? Half the time you don't even know something happened!!! The beginning seemed like there will be some great sh*t coming up. But the ML just turned out to be some horned... more>> teenager. It's nonsense. <<less

I dropped it.

bc WTF. This novel is so.. Dark. In an absurd way. And honestly, I didn't like the main duo, they are so.. Ew.

but I gave 3 stars for 3 reasons:

  • The amazing translation.
  • Old john.
  • Ariel.
    Spoiler

Here is just a sensitive reader's nonsense about her fav characters.. (:

Ariel smiled sweetly, but Du Ze felt a chill in his spine. Ariel is too accepting. She doesn't hate that Xiu destroyed the Elven Forest, doesn't hate Xiu's pollution of the elves, and doesn't hate Xiu's actions that led to her mother's death. The original Ariel could forgive all of this because of her love for Xiu, but this Ariel

The dark elf princess's eyes were filled with longing and she wrote on the branch, unaware of the changes in her personality.

[He is very strong and everyone likes him.]

In his imagination, the brown-haired, golden-eyed elf princess in "Mixed Blood" smiled warmly and softly said to Xiu: [I love you so I will support whatever you do.]

    The contrast seems particularly brutal.

You know that feeling when you feel a character with all your heart? And you understand it well? But you are a s*upid person who can't explain his feelings? Yes, that's exactly me.

After I read the chapters that involved Ariel's story, I cried so much, I cried with all my heart, I couldn't stop thinking about her, she deserved better than this, she deserved a better life. Thinking about her fate is so heartbreaking.

In her life in the original novel, all her heart and feelings were for Xiu, and although she gave him everything she had, he didn't give her anything, he was already blackened and engulfed in darkness. She even sacrificed her soul for him, for the sake of love, as they said. But in my opinion.. This was not because she loved him for who he is, she loved him because she "needed" him.

    She needed someone.

But he wasn't the right one, he didn't put her in his eyes from the beginning, until she had gone.

But in the current life, she had completely gone insane.

She can't be saved anymore. She lost her heart.

In my opinion, It's basically a form of the Stockholm Syndrome. Iykyk.

Even though she is a side character, she had a strong influence on me, more than any other character.

In fact, the MC's silliness is so annoying to me, if the author wrote the story in a better way, In a way that conveys to the reader the deeper plot that the story contains, it would deserve five stars.

Anyway, it wasn't that bad. But If I had a chance to go back in time, I won't choose to read it :)

This book is... fine. Not terrible, but also not terribly enjoyable (although there were enjoyable parts).

The beginning tries way too hard to be comedic and was hard to read because of all the internet/otaku slang. After a few chapters that calmed down a lot, and the story got pretty good for a while. In terms of characterization, I liked that the backstory of the MC ... more>>

developing social phobia due to his experiences when he first developed hearing loss in middle school, and how his social phobia and hearing loss affect the way he perceives the world and interacts with the ML and other characters. However, later on, it stops being interesting and feels like it’s only mentioned again when it’s convenient to the plot. For example, in the first maybe 1/3-1/2 of the book, MC’s hearing aid loses battery in the afternoon/evening so there are a lot of things he misses or can only understand based on watching people’s actions, but later on he can pretty much hear all of the time. The hearing aid is then only mentioned when the MC is noting that he can still hear, therefore it must not be nighttime yet (even though in several previous nights there was no mention of him not being able to hear).

[collapse]

ML I felt was cheated because the author really only writes of him as a main character of a novel (and doesn’t even refer to him by name half the time, just calls him “the main character”). So his personality is pretty flat and uninteresting, even though based on his backstory he could actually have so much potential to be a compelling character.

For the plot, it was fine at the beginning, then got really interesting for a while, but about 2/3 of the way through it got really boring.
Spoiler

After they reached entered the tower that allows you to become a god, it became really formulaic because they were just repeatedly going to the different floors, completing the challenge, going back to the main lobby, and seeing that there was species’s statue added to the display, then repeat. And because the challenges themselves were not super interesting, it was boring and a chore to read through.

[collapse]

The smut parts were also not that interesting. ML was just really forceful and MC just went along with everything. They didn’t really even change positions that much, and somehow everything seemed really... contrived? I got the impression the author is a virg*n lol. Or in other words, it seemed like the author skipped over a lot of parts because they didn’t know quite what would happen there. <<less

Reading this novel after reading a plot heavy novel with complex and well written characters is just like eating a plain stale cracker after having a satisfying meal.

Just so bland, characters felt so two dimensional and their relationship was just plain ass abusive how is this even romantic? The plot had potential tbh. I had high expectations when I saw lots of 5 star reviews, only to then be disappointed by a messy plot and flat characters.

2/5*

Almost finished the novel, but quite disappointed. Main characters are 2-dimensional at best, barely any development. MC is really boring except that he is always described as silly and cute, but that's it. Side characters are 1-dimensional, barely play a role.

Story was very hard to follow as world building was all over the place. Mix of western fantasy, scifi, modern... Makes it messy and my head is dizzy from too many genres and too many fantastical elements. Really don't understand why this story is so popular and one of the... more>> most read BL novels. Overall: 2.5/5. Just... meh.

I got to chapter 10 before losing interest on my first attempt reading. And held on through to chapter 50 with my second attempt before dropping again. I must be missing something for how popular this novel is, but it just could not keep my attention.

The premise had potential with ML being the descendant of all 8 races in the world, where each arc is supposed to see MC accompany ML through each race’s metropolis and resolve a conflict. But the plot lines were superficial. I would... more>> rather there had only been, say, four races. Eight seems too unwieldy, and ML powers through each arc as if marking off a checklist rather than discovering his heritage. Too much telling rather than showing, especially when the MC goes on about how things were in the original book and compares that to the present situation.

The MC is also frustrating to read not just because of his obliviousness towards ML’s affections (Oh yes, it’s a very bro thing for MC to give ML a handjob. That doesn’t mean either ML or himself are bent or interested in each other though!) but also because he claims to want the ML to be a good person and not become blackened like in the original story... but just stands there as ML is wrecking devastation on the world. And the ML is no better, becoming insanely possessive when MC interacts with anyone else.

Finally, the writing is sometimes burdensome to read. Too many references to MC as “some silly, cute person” and ML as the “Moe Lord.” It’s not endearing. There’s probably quite a bit of other internet slang that is difficult to translate out of Chinese. s*um Villain has the same idea where MC is a reader that incited the author to change original ML from a naive protagonist into a blackened stallion but handles the internet lingo and role of MC as a reader much better. <<less

Truth be told, I just found this novel really bland and boring. It has all the cliches, your "sudden transmigration into a book you hate (at the current plot point) ", your "kinda op items from previous world", and "omg ML finds you and falls in love". The world building is kind of awkward, I feel like rather than the MCs traveling the world, its more like they just wander around and the places are created as they go. The mc's thought processes are also kind of redundant and uninteresting... more>> to read. ML is lowkey borderlining creepy atm

theres nothing unique about it overall, but maybe itll improve as it continues (considering the fact that so many ppl like this) ? Im dropping the novel here cause I dont see much potential for future development and I'm not exactly a fan of the writing at the current stage <<less

The ending is amazing. Well, this story is pretty amazing. MC is flawed and no one expects ML to be a good guy anyway.

Spoiler

I just love how guilty the MC is for his role in destroying ml's life. Sure if it's just a character in the book then whatever, right? They're not real. But if you meet that character in real life and realize what they've been through was real for them, then you're just horrified. It reminds me of the movie Stranger than Fiction.

This to me is the appeal of this novel. MC trying his best to atone for what he believes he's done to the ml. He lets ML get away with using him and being submissive. It doesn't help that mc's deafness is the reason for his trauma and character. So others might feel he's too timid or quiet or boring, without thinking of how his characterization is actually like added with his guilt for his favorite character.

Even if he's not like other mc's, I think it's also important to have variation and diversity in novels. Not every MC needs to be strong and confident and badass, because not all people are like that anyway. People are different and not at all the same, so we should celebrate diversity in reading as well.

Not really that interesting. I read this to pass the time, while I wait for other novels that I'm reading to update. The translation quality is very good, but the story is not that engaging. I guess I just read a lot of novels with this type of setting and I find this one mediocre, not too good, not too bad.

One of two novels that regularly update and one of my favorite novels so far. I just love the story and the characters, especially the baby phoenix chick (I also love Du Ze, Xiu, and old John). It won't be long until this novel ends but I'm so glad that I decided to give this novel a chance. I've read everything since the first chapter was uploaded and I'll continue to do the same with the last chapter

The art and description make this novel seem like casual and silly BL-- but it's actually really good. It has a full-fledged story, and the plot development and action take precedence over any fluff.

Summary:

Du Ze is a black-powder fan -- who writes terrible reviews and hateful comments on his favorite author's writing in order to draw attention to it and increase the novel's popularity. One day, his trolling accidentally goes too far, and the offended author changes his normal "stallion" harem story into a depressing and dark tragedy in which... more>> the hero destroys the world. Before he reaches the end of the novel, the despairing Du Ze is transported into the world of the story and to the hero who has already turned "black."

Writing:

The two main characters, the reader and protagonist, are well-written and believable (despite the ML's protagonist-halo and otherworldly good looks). Their personalities and relationship develop slowly and surely. The dynamic between the stone-faced silly fanboy, Du Ze, and too-beautiful-to-be-true yandere, Xiu, is great fun to read. I particularly like how the author handled Du Ze's slow change in perspective from an outside observer to actually caring about Xiu as a person.

The pacing of the story is also very good, so it's easy to read this story without getting bored. The translation quality is GREAT, with helpful notes, frequent updates, and no difficult Chinese vocabulary to memorize.

The BL is also good. ;)

The minor downsides to this novel are that:

1.) None of the other side characters have major roles or developed personalities. (But really, this novel is only about the two main characters being in their own little world, so it doesn't really bother me.)

2.) It's still a parody of a typical "stallion" novel (you know, the ones where the protagonist has a golden-finger/cheat, rare treasures, god pets, harem, level-defying abilities, etc), so you have to be ok with those sorts of scenarios constantly popping up.

3.) There is an non-consent R-rated scene after Ch.50 that may offend/trigger some people. (Other rotten fujoshi may enjoy it, though... Just thought I'd mention it just to be safe.)

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this series. If you are a fan of stories with fantasy, parody, and the relationship between a dense/cold main character and possessive male lead, you will probably like this. <<less

Really love this manga! Not only is the story excellent, but the translator is the best at pushing out updates. I really love watching the protagonist's obsession and dependence on the Reader grow!

I also would LOVE to have a copy of Du Ze's doujinshi *cough cough* for educational purposes (/*/w/*/)

Whatever is happening here is a mystery. This novel is poorly written. I say, poorly, really poor. It's like writing the idea you had at 3AM without hinch and just published it then this is it. I really like the premise but other than that, it's hard to accept this thing could really be called a novel.

Kept giving this a pass despite it being on a lot of recs lists. I eventually caved and decided to give it a shot anyway.

The beginning is Hella messy. I don't know if it was the translations (which, gigantic kudos to the translators tho) or the actual writing style of the author. I didn't like it and couldn't really get into it. It was interesting enough to make me push through the first 10 chapters, with a healthy amount of breaks in between and lots of work. Basically I just... more>> used this as a way of turning off my brain, without actually resting completely.

Now at chapter 44 and I had to come back here for a bit before I lose my train of thought. At this point, I'd give this a very lukewarm 2stars out of 5. It's not bad. It's not good either. It's not painfully horrible to deserve a 1 star (can barely make me feel anything, even anger). I keep gettinf annoyed with all the ways the author describes the MC and ML, and almost always constantly referring to them by Not Their Name. Just a quirky "Moe Lord" and "cute reader".

The story and writing is pretty juvenile. Again, it's not like there aren't any worse stories out there but I'm just so flipping bored already.

I love me some possessive yandere type ML's. But I actually want my MC to be an active part of the story.

MC here constantly feels like he's just along for the ride. It feels like a friggin You/Reader x ML fic.

Edit: at ch62 and things are getting pretty epic. I just wish the MC could do something and not just be a constant bystander. The world building is OK I guess. Not very fleshed out but still pretty ok considering the length of this book and the focus on MC and ML.

Edit: finally done. Translators did an amazing job. Enjoyed the NSFW chapters and their efforts to preserve them. Overall story was ok. Maybe just not my cup of tea. I mostly like my MC being proactive in the story lol. MC in this was basically an accessory to the ML despite it being mostly written in MC's POV <<less

this book f*cking SUCKS. and I dont say this only because of the (as discussed in other reviews) frankly horrible s*x scenes and the one Very bad non consensual dragon scene. like yeah that's part of it but if I only talked abt that you might be fooled into thinking this is a good book with bad smut WHICH IT'S NOT.

the pacing in this book is somehow boring and at times too fast. I'm sure that if you sit down and read a couple of chapters per day spacing it... more>> out you won't feel as much of this, but if you do that then you run the risk of getting lost in the many many locations that get very little explanation. half the times I only had a vague tenuous idea of where the characters where and who was hanging out with the MCs (and sure you know what? maybe if I was reading carefully and with a lot of concentration I wouldn't have this problem but if you want me to take out the notes and write in the metaphorical margins for this book you are insane). side characters that appear at the beginning do stick around but they're all mostly boring or have little to no character development aside from one quirky trait (like the f*cking. lesbian in*est demons. what the f*ck was up with that). if you only care about the romance, then yeah this isn't a big issue! if you care about literally anything else then oh man.

also the romance is. its something for sure. I'm not gonna sit here and tell you it's the worst and most toxic horrible thing ever and clutch my pealrs and faint and throw up or something bc it really isn't, it's just... To me it fails on the two levels I find romance interesting: it's not a romance in which I go "aw, I wish I had that" or anything, but it's also not a dark complex relationship that I want to watch because it's so bad. Yeah there's some cute-ish moments, and the ML's possesiveness is definitely toxic and at times dark, but I'd rate it about the same as some random quotev yandere anime boy x reader on those terms. the ML's constantly changing species / shape SHOULD be interesting but instead whenever there was a new form I was like :/ oh boy time to see how they have some s*x moment in this one and then advance the convoluted plot.

as far as the characters go, I do actually like Du Ze. listen, this novel DOES have good things! the doujin being the only item that Du Ze brought and the fact it's indestructible? it's funny (it's sometimes used so often that it feels tiring, but overall it's a funny gag). it has a premise about as good as any transmigration story has, and I really like transmigration stories. Du Ze, for as grating as his slightly repetitive 'haha im a transmigrator so ik what will happen' might be at times, is actually enjoyable, and I did care for him. I think it's awesome that he's a disabled MC and that his disability is treated somewhat realistically (as far as. transmigration danmei novels go), he uses hearing aids, and he DOESN'T GET MAGICALLY CURED which is. Good! Awesome! I did like Du Ze and his feelings, I did think his love for the ML was cute at times! I liked (... most) of his inner monologues and how he interacted with other characters! Too bad he's part of a story that is just not enjoyable to read if you're trying to get more from this book than 'omg hot yandere yaoiz XD'

this book truly, realy does have interesting concepts. a lot of its arcs and settings are genuinely interesting. the blackened ML is an interesting and engaging idea. the side characters, as concepts, seem to be characters you'd want to know more about. It's just too bad that the plot seems to both zoom by and leave you confused as to what is happening and at the same time feel like it's dragging on so slow you're halfway tempted to just skip ahead to the next weirdo s*x scene so at least SOMETHING understandable and easy to read is happening. the side characters just sort of blur into one big confusing mass and the second you go for a few hours not reading this you've probably forgotten most of their names or what they even did.

i'd say 'if you know the possible triggering content (like. yknow. the r*pe scene?) and just want some danmei transmigration fun read this book', but i'd be lying. because its NOT easy fun unless you really want to just plug your eyes and ignore all the worldbuilding and plot and only focus on the central relationship, in which case it's probably easier to go read a fanfic! you're going to WANT to make sense of this book because it has promising elements and then you're just going to have a stressful time trying to keep track of what's going on!! this review isn't me being some Puritan Warrior holding up a cross and going "AH! PROBLEMATIC CONTENT! BAD! CANCEL! 0/10!". it's me telling you I sat down and read all 96 chapters in the span of a few days and came out of it a more confused and probably worse person. I'm not even gonna say "go read X book instead", I'm not here to promote what I like, genuinely please read ANYTHING other than this and I promise you'll probably have a better time <<less
