The Reader and Protagonist Definitely Have to Be in True Love

An internet troll who wanted attention, the reader criticized his favorite web novel, saying: “The protagonist is dumb and the author is s*upid.”

Author: “…Got it.”

Unfortunately for him, the author actually listened to his (troll) feedback. The formerly lighthearted tale of a cute harem master suddenly became super dark and edgy. The reader could only helplessly look on as the protagonist was ab*sed and betrayed, finally embarking on the road to becoming completely evil. Everything was a mess!

After that the reader transmigrated into a strange world. How come the person in front of him looks like the protagonist (evil undead version)? Just what is going on?!

Note: Du Zhe (读者 meaning Reader) and Du Ze (杜泽 the character’s name) sound almost the same

MC's very conveniently dead headphones is so annoying plot device. Same for never talking protagonist, almost no interaction because of it. It was boring to read. Dropped.

5 Stars! This novel deserves nothing but stars.

-Characters top notch

-Plot keep me want to read more and more

-Romance beyond Romeo and Juliet level

-The twists and turns, the comedy, the blood thirst, the 8 races, yes yes yes!

Even the transmigration and the intertwined works so well and refreshing so different from other novels of the same genre

And the ending 'MUA' so perfect

You don't read this you're missing out big time. YOU CAN'T COMPLAIN!. Well it's only 90 plus chapters. I WANT MODERN LIFE ARC but it's so perfect I want more.

The manga is amazing and reading the novel was 100% worth it. I wouldn't have been able to survive the cliffhangers. I had a lot of fun reading it, the memes are GOLD haha. I specially loved the Reader lack of expression most of the time

The story, even though it looks like a common isekai at the start it was complex and unique through out the whole story, especially the final chapters.

The characters, trials and strategies, are mind-blowing. 10/10 I could totally read this again and... more>> I would enjoy it every time.

(at the start of the story they mention that the Reader is weak, has myopia and has to use hearing aids because he is almost deaf, and he is perfect that way, I love him so much) <<less

Have to give this story props for creativity. At first, I thought it was just a different version of the usual transmigration story (typically cultivation-based) where the reader transmigrates into the novel to try to help/save the protagonist, who ends up falling in love with him. But the twists and details done here are really something else.

 • The MC is not OP and actually is essentially the same person in the novel as he is in real life. He has relatable real-life characteristics: poor eyesight, hearing aide, facial paralysis, physically weak, only strength is plot knowledge lol.
 • The overall meta theme of the 'story' was interwoven really well. The establishment of 'the rules' and enlightenment of the 'characters'~ *mind blown*
 • The concept of the eight races was super riveting. (*Cough* creativity extends to the bedroom scenes too, so many kinks fulfilled (●´艸`) ヾ)
I loved reading the [black box] and 'The author has something to say:' segments too~

Overall, super interesting, super enjoyable (*coughsuperkinkycough*) ^ ^

Ok so I binged this story and read it as fast as I could because it was too good!!! The main characters are fleshed out and have their own distinct personality and goals, the supporting characters are interesting and charming, the world building is so good I almost wished I was inside it, and the plot wasn't overly complicated but still kept me interested and thinking.

This story is simply amazing, I was completely hooked from beginning to end!!

(As a fun bonus, the sm*t chapters are sooooo good)

Highly recommend... more>> this to everyone who likes fantasy elements, novel transmigration and hot scenes (lol) <<less

I read some negative comments on this one (at goodreads maybe) and was postponing it for a while. But not many completed danmeis were left in my list and I decided to give it a try and... I was not disappointed. Greatly enjoyed reading it. The ending was a little bit fluffy but in overall very fascinating story.

Well... it's a BL novel. Very typical for the genre. Comes with a decent enough plot that has lots of excuses for the papapa to happen.

Spoiler

ML can shapeshift into multiple forms and MC gets dicked by each one of his forms.

[collapse]

ML is the typical seme with possessively r*pey vibes interspersed with just enough sweet vulnerability to make readers go "awwww". MC is pretty interesting. He's the typical passive go-with-the-flow type, with one interesting quirk: he's deaf. It's pretty unusual to see handicapped characters in these kinds of novels, so that was new.

Other than that, it follows a pretty straightforward BL-style transmigration plotline... until everything gets incredibly meta. I thought it was fairly creative except for the fact that the author basically ripped off the entire Dungeons and Dragons pantheon. It's so blatant that they straight up copied the names and main traits of the gods. I know D&D has been pretty influential in modern fantasy, but they couldn't have made an attempt to even change the god's names? That's just laziness on another level. <<less

don't read those R rated chapters!!! eee! they hurt, they HURT!!! Don't be tempted!!! trust me!!! The dragon region was a dead killer!! I gave up on it at first but I will continue to read... (sigh..) It was very painful to read!!! Pretty much entirely rapist... Those dam dragons!! I don't know if that was the hardest area or not, if I go any further, will the beast regions be worse?? I don't know if I want to chance it. Everything up to chapter 51 was pure bliss, then straight into 52 was like rubbing a cheese grater against my brain... not sure why the writer changed so much. I ended up feeling like the MC in this novel when he read through the novel at the beginning and the author kept torturing the readers. lol. The translator group name Bursting Chrysanthemums is not for nothing!!!

update: Just skip the dragon section if you don't want to be horribly broken..... (゚Д゚;)...... =͟͟͞͞ =͟͟͞͞ ヘ (´Д`) ノ ... the rest is good so far... o.o

I'm not gonna lie, TRPDHTL is good, if you ignore the not so tiny facts that bugged me.

It all starts when 'some silly cute moe person', diligently following a novel badly named, but holds close to his heart, posts a negative comment beneath the latest update. It is then that the author takes what he says to heart and so a series of torturous events turn the protagonist of the novel in to a vengeance thirst character. After the novel finishes he orders the book, only to find a doujinshi,... more>> and that he'd transmigrated with self-restoring abilities.

That aside, after he successfully gains the protagonists trust (and love) they journey across the continent. Du Ze's disability makes him diverse, as you wouldn't often see that, and proves to be more alluring to the protagonist.

It is quite enjoyable, and a 3 star isn't really low, out of 10 it'd be 6. There were many inconsistencies present, though and one racial insult. For example, of all the races, the only ones with dark skin were the elves. That was what was written in the early chapters, but later on, in the elf country arc, we were led to believe that the elves who had dark skin were dark, and the one with light are good. I can't help but feel that the author could have explored that in a different way. Moreover, the "light" elves turn "dark" and are mortified to find that their skin had turned black and killed themselves out of disgust. Well, the queen did. The message was clear: dark skin was something to be ashamed of. With the white/ black contrast established, I dismissed it as a fluke, that the author couldn't have known. Though I'd be lying if I said that it was alright. That may be the reason I'd dropped it, but I still read on to see the protagonist finally make his feelings known, and to see his other forms.

The translation was perfect, as well as reading the action, until the 20th chapter or so, we get to see the characters visually, what with the manga not translated.

Again, if recommend it for those patient with racial insults and a plot that somehow lags at times. <<less

On a site where the MC is almost always an OP cheat it was nice to see someone like Du Ze, who is not only weak, but also has to use hearing aids. For once though, his deafness isn't used it provoke pity in our minds, it's just a part of who he is.

I'm so glad the translators stuck with this story until the end. It was very good, and I'm very happy that while the MC could be a little silly at times, the author didn't go with the... more>> stereotypical s*upid and naive shou. I wan't forced to grind my teeth even once.

Also, thank you to the translators. <<less

One of the best that I've read. It's pretty satisfying although maybe I'm not really that satisfied with the ending. It's actually the best ending, don't get me wrong but well. The drama ends! Love the story so much I remembered having to read it on the day I'm not supposed to. The yaoi part is, as always, so good I'm drooling from thinking about it!!! XD

Read the title of this story. What do you think of? A love story, right? Despite the heart-pounding action and funny hijinks, The Reader and Protagonist Definitely Have to Be in True Love is essentially a love story. Take out the love story and you would be left with a heartless, soulless creation.

It's not true that the sign of a good BL story is that if you take out the BL, it's still good. If you want to take out the BL, then read a non-BL story. How about this:... more>> the sign of a good horror story is that if you take out the horror, it's still good. ≪--- Nuh uh! Take out the horror from a horror story and all you are left with is "they went camping, nothing happened" since the horror parts are absolutely essential to the story.

Moving on, this is one of the really satisfying BL stories around since it has the following rarely-seen elements, all in one story:

 • humor
 • no "dog blood" cliches like misunderstandings or scheming female villains, etc.
 • a yandere seme who nonetheless never ab*ses the uke
 • lovers who dote on each other
 • uke who is not coerced and falls in love of his own accord
 • likeable ML and MC
 • interesting minor characters
 • true love
 • completely translated
There are many, many BL and non-BL romance stories here where I can't stand either the ML or MC. The Reader and Protagonist Definitely Have to Be in True Love has a silly, cute reader and a truly moe protagonist.

The best part? I really think it's true love. This is a story where I can actually imagine the two of them growing old together and staying together forever.

TL;DR - This is the epic love story of two lovable characters. <<less

My first love. If you are into BL transmigration, this is a must read epic.

**Edited to 3.5 stars in 2023**

This novel is one of my first CN transmigration type, so I gave too generous stars. Could -1 star for characters flaw (ML's Yandere tendency/ MC's dumpness). And maybe -0.5 star for created ML's alternate race purely for writing NC scenes (IMO).

This ML is like a yandere but not so unreasonable. Yeah, he's possessive but he doesn't want the MC's body only. His path to conquering MC is to first slowly conquer his heart then indulge in some "bonding". Even when ML did harm the MC, he later vowed to destroy anything that would harm MC, including himself.

Overall, an a amazing story. The ending will surprise you guys greatly ;)

I very rarely write reviews, but this novel definitely warrants one. The humor is spot on, the characters have understandable motivations, and the emotions are poignant at the right times. Not to mention the translator is doing an amazing job.

For people who are a little confused about how the timelines work with the real world:

Spoiler

The reader is a fan of the author and will write bad reviews to get attention (essentially). He's pretty adorable when he does this. On the author's latest novel, he writes a review that causes the author to change the plot a lot as compared to his previous novels. The reader has to go somewhere for a while and comes back to find that the author has taken his story in a really dark direction. So the reader knows a lot of the plot and is QQ about it. Then he ends up in the protagonist's/novel's world, near the start of the novel and works hard to help the protagonist

[collapse]

Seriously though, the reader is hilarious and probably one of my favorite main characters yet! <<less

Simply one of the best that BL stories that I've read so far.

The story plot in and of itself is quite unique from the start. While other BL reader-transmigrates-into-mob-character-close-to-the-villain, this one is different in that it skips the reader (Du Ze) into the period where the original novel's protagonist has suffered the worst betrayal... one that he caused. From then on, knowing that he was the cause of the protagonist's suffering, he stuck by his side and devoted himself to the protagonist. In turn, because of this the protagonist became... more>> posessive of him and eventually fell for him.

Although the protagonist, like any other chinese novels, is overbearing and mostly unreasonable, he listens to what Du Ze has to say. He doesn't just discard his thoughts.

The development of the romance between the two flows quite smoothly, and in regards to the plot, I have no qualms over it.

Another good thing about this is the translation quality. The translator does a good, consistent job of updating chapters. The translation itself is really good, and there is nothing I can nitpick about it. The added pictures from the manhwa (manhua? I'm not quite sure which one is the right one...) of the novel is awesome too.

All in all, I give it a good five star rating ^^ <<less

This is a hilarious action/adventure/fantasy/romance story where an Awkward Lead meets an Extra-Awkward Lead. Du Ze, the reader, is a main character I haven't come across in many novels before.

Spoiler

He began losing his hearing as he grew up and hated wearing hearing aides, so he pretended to hear and understand his classmates. When he started wearing them, he realized they had been making fun of him all this time. This turns him into an expressionless and aloof character, who usually keeps his mouth shut. His eyesight is also poor, but he manages that well with glasses.

Considering all of that and the fact that he has no combat ability, he really undervalues himself.

[collapse]

The novel's protagonist, Xiu, was a standard Gary Sue bishie until his undead nature was discovered, and his happy adventure story twisted into one more focused on betrayal and revenge. Since then, he became paranoid and distrustful, choosing to become a cold-hearted warrior to be feared rather than to be loved.

They are both quiet characters who hardly talk and rarely share their secrets or feelings, so the awkwardness overload of two stiff stoic characters is pretty funny. As Du Ze's actions completely alter the storyline of the plot, it's fun to watch him get caught off-guard as events change. As Xiu becomes interested in Du Ze, Du Ze only focuses on trying to build Xiu's harem like the original Xiu had and is completely oblivious to Xiu's feelings. The addition of other characters makes their interactions more refreshing.

One of the biggest things keeping me hooked is...
Spoiler

the mystery of how Du Ze was sent to that world in the first place. It looks like the God of Light and the Gnome God of Forging are both looking for him. Was it their doing, or did the writer actually take part? What do they want with him? Why do some of the other characters feel intimidated by the weakling Du Ze? How does the prophecy Du Ze saw play out? Did he really receive that doujinshi by accident, or did someone send it to him on purpose?

[collapse]

The daily updates and comedy have me looking forward to each new chapter after work.

The main weaknesses of this story are its rough pacing and minimal chemistry between characters. The pace is fast enough to even out the awkward passages of time, but they are still noticeable. The side-characters make Du Ze and Xiu more interesting, but I'm more interested in the developing yandere aspects of Xiu rather than the anticipated romance. <<less

Both the five star reviews and the one star reviews are accurate. The characters can be bland, and the plot odd, and yes, the MC was forced into having s*x. But is that really so odd for many yaoi novels? I don't think so. I practically expected it to happen from the first chapter.

The tags should be accurate now. Just read those and keep them in mind when reading and you will be fine.

I can't say it’s the best novel I’ve read in my life, but it’s so good that I can’t understand why this great story has bad reviews. The story is kind of cliché, but I genuinely enjoyed the way it developed. Even the ML and MC had their own ways of showing how dedicated they were to the relationship. In addition to that, the R18 parts were amazing.

I want to say thank you to the translator for doing such an awesome job with this story.
