The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage

Shen Miao, the Di daughter of a military family, was pure, quiet, gentle, and gracious. Because of her foolish love for Prince Ding, she forced her way into becoming his wife.

After six years of assisting her husband, she finally became the mother of the world: The Empress.

She had stayed with him during the fight for dominion over the empire and during the efforts to expand its territory. She even went so far as to put herself in danger and be taken hostage by a neighboring empire. In spite of this, when she returned to the Imperial Palace five years later, she no longer had a place in the Imperial Harem.

That beautiful woman he kept in his embrace gave her a bright, stunning smile and told her, “Older Sister, the country has settled down. It is time for you to step back as well.”

Her daughter died tragically and her son the Crown Prince was deposed. No one in her Shen family, who had been completely loyal to the Emperor, were spared. With arrival of a new reign, everything was overturned!

Shen Miao never thought that all of the perils they encountered as husband and wife, all of the assistance they gave each other mutually, were nothing but a joke in his eyes!

He told her, “Because you have been with this Emperor for more than two decades, this Emperor will allow you to keep an intact corpse. You should be grateful for this kindness.”

Beneath a meter of white silk, Shen Miao established a malicious oath: Once the day of reckoning arrives, every single one of you will die!

Once reborn, she returns to the year when she was only fourteen years old, a time when tragedy has not yet befallen, when her family still lived, and when she was still the pure, quiet, gentle, and gracious Di daughter of a military family.

Close relatives conceal evil intentions, her cousins are vicious and merciless, the new concubine is like tiger watching its prey and that s*um wants the previous life’s events to be repeated?

Her family must be protected, the great enmity must be avenged, and the prize must include the empire’s imperial throne. In this lifetime, let us see who comes out on top!

But that Xie Family’s young marquis, that tyrannical and arrogant spear-wielding young man on horseback, stays stubbornly on her side and proudly declares, “It is merely toppling the Imperial Family. Do not forget, the world belongs to you, and you—you belong to me!”

The Thirteen Capitals of You Zhou: This belongs to you.

The Ding Yuan City in the North Desert: This belongs to you.

The Southern River of Yu Zhou, the Eastern Sea of Ding Xi, the Green Lakes of Lin’an, the Ancient City of Luo Yang: All of these belong to you.

“Xie Jing Xing, if all of this belongs to me, then can you tell me what you want?”

“Alright, I want you.”

Plot: 3/5. The author doesn't tie up very many loose ends and a lot of situations are contrived for better romantic tension. If you're looking for a novel which involves political schemes, it's not that great. This is a romantic novel.

Romance: 4/5 plenty of romantic tension between the MC/ML. A couple of secondary couples get some development.

MC: Likable but not especially impressive. This story is about the MC's personal journey and not that great about worldbuilding. I don't think the 'poisonous/malicious empress' title fits her that well given she's not... more>> really malicious at all.

ML: Likable but 80% of stuff that's important to his personal journey is just a reason for him and the MC to get close to one another. This has to do with the author not tying up loose ends.

General Cast: Doesn't get developed very much, which feeds into why this isn't really a good political novel. Especially the antagonists: they're mostly just selfish and out to get the MC for no real reason, which makes them kind of one-dimensional. The MC's ex and his family should be a lot more impressive than they are, but they pretty much don't put up a great fight. Most of the characters in this novel are a lot dumber than the ones in TPW. A lot of secondary characters don't really get arcs or resolutions.

I'm seeing a lot of comparisons to The Princess Weiyang here. I've listened to the audiobooks for both TPW and this novel. They both have their strengths, but Li Weiyang is definitely more vicious than Shen Miao. TPW is good at schemes, and LWY basically cleans up her own messes while borrowing the power of others or strategizing how to get that power for herself. TPW is better for people who like schemes and don't mind a weak romance, while this novel is more the opposite. There's a lot more chemistry between the MC and ML in this novel even though it's a slow burn.

This story's plots are weaker than the ones in TPW, and the first portion of the story involves the MC cleaning house, which in these rebirth novels tends to involve really annoying villains, so it takes some time to get good. By the time she gets around to dealing with national politics, she ends up relying a lot on her man rather than dealing with things herself. The ML is so OP he pretty much doesn't need her for political scheming. The latter half of the story is much more about their romance and the MC getting over her issues than about political scheming. However, the author portrays that pretty well.

Compared to TPW, I'd say this novel takes a little more time to get into it, just because the initial chapters are about how the antagonists are overtly annoying/evil and it takes a while until they get what's coming to them. I feel like I had to choke the first several chapters down and honestly it's probably okay to skim/skip the first ~15 chapters after the initial rebirth introduction if you're familiar with how rebirth novels tend to go. The main antagonists are also kind of disappointing compared to TPW in that the MC has designated enemies, but it's not really a novel-length chess match directly between her and them. The ones in TPW put up better fights. <<less

So far this novel is the best revenge transmigration shoujo novel I ever read at NU.

The romance is slow, still just a little less than bit of progress with the male lead in the last chapter. Probably because MC just focusing on her revenge.

Theres almost no filler chapter and no op item for shortcut in this novel.

It have fast pace for storyline.

MC prepare her revenge step by step til her enemies reach the dead end.

Would love to read this to the end. Kudos for the author!

The taste of spice, bitter and sweet is just nice.

Literally the true meaning of 'cunning protagonist', 'power couple', 'revenge', 'ruthless protagonist', 'second chance', and 'slow romance'.

Yes. Slow. Romance.

... more>> But it align nicely with the plot. Everything fits in place and not ML fall in love at first sight with the OP-ness MC that suddenly too OOC and can defy the heaven orders.

No.

She intrigued him and he annoyed (scared sometimes) her.

The love-hate relationship partnership is precious albeit the heart-wrenching-slowest-crawl progress.

The character, side or main, are not 2D and not all of them make appearance just to highlight the protagonist in limelight.

They have their own character, their own plotline, and their own development.

Worth a read. No, worth re-reads. <<less

I just had to write a review.

First of all there are a LOT of the stereotypical rebirth and revenge story and I have read a ton of them so I went into this one without much expectation, just the usual casual cliché to pass time.

I was so so so wrong. This book is so much more than that. What made it exceptional compared to any other rebirth and revenge story I've read before is that this story evokes emotion at a depth that you would not believe. I read this... more>> in English, and had to find the Chinese copy and reread both of them just because it was that good.

The story progresses slow and while I am normally not a patient reader and would like to delve right into the romance part of a story, this one book was the interesting exception for me. First of all it was very well written, the plot and events are advancing at a good pace that keeps you reading and not bored. Nothing is dragged in the story, and the plots and schemes are interesting and doesn't span for like tens of chapters per arc.

*May contain spoiler*

Now the romance part. It was a slow romance, but interestingly it was not the boring frustrating slow romance that leaves you frustrated wondering when it will start. There are plenty of interaction between the MC and ML or some glimpse of the ML even when they are not romancing. It was quite refreshing, they were not the cheesy couple that shows their feelings much, especially the MC.

The MC understandably wants to avoid romance or having feelings at all, and she was never warm nor flirty with the ML. She was consistent with her sharp, cold behavior (unlike the other MCs who are cold but then turned all adorable in front of the ML). The ML did not tame the MC, and the MC never confessed her love to him BUT she did things, her actions shows her care for him. She stood up for him, and without realizing it she had been observing him and in the end she understood him better anyone and she always treated him sincerely.

I would also argue while the ML seemed like a cookie-cutter ML with the charming, cold but sweet attitude, this was not true. ML was not infatuated with her or chased her persistently or turned into a henpecked husband who waits for the MC to command him. ML maintained his character: frivilous, arrogant and apathetic. As the story started he was merely intrigued by the MC so he watched her but he never makes any actual romantic move on her. He sees her indifferently as how his character is depicted, she was interesting but he doesn't mind killing her. As the story goes and he fell in love with her he also maintained his frivolous character. At this point he has deeper interest in her and naturally want to get closer but he does not go out of character. He teases her and just wanted to be more involved with her, he shows his care but he never brings up matter about feelings. He was a contradictory kind of character which the author managed to portray beautifully, which is rare.

The author's depiction of the ML's character and disposition is perfectly fleshed out, especially when his involvement in the past lifetime was revealed. It was in-depth and couldn't help but make you fell in love with the ML (if you haven't already). All in all, he was golden.

5/5 would recommend. Beautifully written, emotionally-evoking tale of two intertwined fate. <<less

This is one of the best novel I have read, especially in comparison to all the other Chinese novels I have read.

It is about reborn FL with a tragic previous life, who changes her life and takes revenge on those who hurt her in her previous life. Setting is similar to ancient China, with minimal supernatural events.

Of course this novel has its bad points too, but which novel can be perfect and suit everyone's taste palette?

So here my opinion:

Good Points:

    • FL is...
        • mature
        • mentally strong
        • competent
        • able to use her foreknowledge correctly (has enough brain cells to use it)
        • no blushing teenager, who immediately changes her personality after meeting the ML
        • with backbone, able to hold on to her goal
    • ML is...
        • smart
        • competent
        • and only loves our FL (
          Spoiler

he had no other woman, both in his previous and new life

          [collapse]
          )
    • Side-characters are mostly 3-dimensional!
    • Spoiler

really satisfying revenge from our FL in the first half of the story

      [collapse]
    • great world building
    • (not included in my rating for this novel) : superb translation by Zazajunnie (if you want to read in dark mode on her website ("ChubbyCheeks"), I recommend to install a browser extension like for example "Dark Reader" or something. For Zooming: every browser should react to the key combination "Ctrl" and "+"/"-")
Bad Points (just some nitpicking) :

    • Even in this novel there is a typical huge ability gap between ML and FL
        • FL is..
            • reborn (meaning she has a lot of foreknowledge, a huge advantage)
            • in her previous life she was not especially smart and quite naive (you could say she has an average IQ)
            • even though she is from a military family and even knowing how dangerous her life is, she never tried to learn even a bit of self-defense
            • she is not really beautiful, Author described her as average in appearance
        • ML is..
            • NOT reborn
            • super intelligent, even much more intelligent and competent than reborn FL
            • super strong in martial-arts
            • SUPER beautiful, face and body, like everything (Author mentions it every time ML appears)
        • Female main antagonist is..
            • NOT reborn
            • super intelligent,
              Spoiler

even more intelligent and competent than reborn FL, even though she is from a simple merchant family

              [collapse]
            • SUPER beautiful
        • Spoiler

          Female cousin of FL is..

            • NOT reborn
            • super intelligent, almost as intelligent and competent as reborn FL, even though she is just a concubine born daughter who stayed hidden in her room all her life
            • quite beautiful
          [collapse]
As you can see FL doesn't seem that special in comparison, I mean who wouldn't be smart and competent after being reborn? Sometimes it seems like Author is trying desperately to make FL not a Mary Sue, but instead makes ML a Gary Sue or other characters. Why is the ML allowed to be perfect but not the FL?

    • There was just one point, where Author did made ML a bit dumb and incompetent for plot use.
      Spoiler

ML is ill and is saved by main female antagonist with antidote. FL just comes back from a wild adventure to get such an antidote for him, but antagonist was quicker. A few gossiper in his mansion tell ML that FL didn't care about him, and went out to an outing for fun. ML believes them, instead of investigating himself. I mean every-time else it seems like ML has his eyes everywhere due to his cronies/secret guards and knows everything, but suddenly he can't find out that FL went out to search for a miracle doctor for him, after sitting depressed on his sick bed for a long time? Where is suddenly his high intelligence and his secret guards?

      [collapse]
    • Small Plot-hole (unless I overlooked something) :
      Spoiler

ML and his crony went to an antagonist's residence to search for something really important and special, being all secretive and sneaky about it, even FL tries to find it, but after that it was never mentioned again

      [collapse]
    • In the second part of the novel
      Spoiler

(after FL marries ML) I was a bit disappointed that FL leans back and leaves her revenge more for ML to do, after that she never even meets the main male antagonist again (against whom she wanted to take revenge the most).

      [collapse]
So in short: since meeting ML she becomes more and more dependent on him, and rarely does things herself
To sum it all up: Even with my nitpicking, this novel deserves it's 5 Stars for being consistent throughout the story, a likable FL who keeps being mature until the very end and a likeable ML who only has FL in his eyes.

Fantastic, honestly the best "reborn with vengeance" story I have read so far. MC is clever, fair and so well written. I highly appreciate how there was reasoning for her change in behavior, and how her past children and experience as an actual mother was never forgotten by her throughout the story. The political scheming is riveting, the face slapping was hideously satisfying and I adored the banter between ML and MC. The side couples were adorable, and the heart wrenching events never failed to bring tears.

As with all books,... more>> it was fantastic but not flawless. MC's marriage decree was drawn out for too long, and ML's OP-ness was too fanatical at times to the point where he could mu*der extremely high ranking people with little care. Also, the descriptions of ML's beauty, oh man. The author takes any and all chances to tell you, ladies of all ages and sizes, quickly present yourselves for mating. No finer specimen of man has walked the earth, the sun pales in comparison to the ML's beauty, blah blah blah barf. It was to the point where everyone, even the translator and editor, were retching at the amount of descriptions. From his movements to his eyebrows, nothing was let off and "amorous air" has been used so many times it's tattooed onto my brain.

overall, it's a fantastic political scheming rebirth story. MC is satisfying, ML is solid, the setting is satisfying, and the plot is intriguing. Even if my eyes glaze over at the descriptions of ML, with so many 5 star ratings, it's well worth giving it a shot. <<less

I really love the story, the characters, and the twists and turns of the plot.
Spoiler

One would think that's it's the typical reincarnation story, but the details and the deathly maneuverings of the characters are really suspenseful.

This is a real fight to death, exterminate all her enemies. The MC I think would be the king-maker in the story and I really hope she exterminates the whole Imperial line.

I just can't wait to read an update.

I'm enjoying the faceslapping, but I wouldn't say it's super unique. Fun read so far; I can see this getting draggy since there's so many chapters left, but I do want to see how some of the plot threads get resolved! Although I did read some of the reviews here and am not terribly optimistic.

Two points I don't like:

  1. A lot of the downfalls for the various villains involve s*xual violence or humiliation. The author does try to justify it so it's not totally gratuitous, but it's just not that pleasant to read about r*pe (and certainly if that's a trigger for you, do NOT read this - nothing so far has happened on screen, but there's a lot of wallowing in the potential or actual consequences)
  2. The translator/editor clearly don't really like the ML as the vast majority of in text translation notes are ones saying stuff like "barf" after a passage about how handsome the ML is etc. I don't feel any particular way about the ML - he isn't one of my favorites for sure - but I probably would've skimmed over & not super noticed those bits if the translator notes hadn't been there. It's a really disruptive reading experience! Now instead of being like "oh god, not the ML being handsome again", I'm like "oh god, not the translator feeling like they have to insert their opinion here again". Put it in an endnote!

I really don't understand why the rating is so high.

Even for the simplest thing? How could the author really made me believe the father and the brother who is fighting in the border and is going back home at the end of every year doesn't know that people from other branch are purposely bullying and making their daughter/sister s*upid?? They defend the border for so many years and yet they're too s*upid to not plant any spies with what's going on with their daughter or just to know what's going... more>> on in the palace. Their whole family literally lives in the capital??? Why the hell they don't care about any of that?

Not to mention MC's father just let his shu brother's wife to take care of the money he got from his own achievement??? From what I see this is just child neglect and they're all too s*upid to care about anything.

Too many two dimensional characters, the translation is meh, the plot is too draggy, too many repetitions and info dumps, a lot of plot holes, MC looks cool at the start of story but later on it becomes boring. I love drama and second chance trope but this novel really doesn't deserves the hype as the writing is just so bad and the author doesnt know to write a decent pacing. <<less

Dear reader: learn from my bitter experience and do not read this novel when you have a deadline coming up. It is long, and it is full of cliffhangers. Save this one for a long weekend with no other commitments, because it is very, very hard to stop reading midway.

Edit: after 170 chapters or so it became less interesting, but don't worry, 170 chapters is enough for my warning to hold. I am dropping a star, partially for the ML being boring in the first half (he gets better... more>> in the second), but mostly because I am really annoyed that female villains get proper payback but male villains get off super lightly - the pe*ophile who tortures people is simply killed, the evil uncles suffer less than the evil aunts, the male cousin who is a major antagonist just gets executed where his sister literally get tortured until she goes insane, the MAIN ANTAGONIST is killed off screen (super mad about this). Compare to female antagonists getting tortured, humiliated, r*ped, etc before their deaths. <<less

I've read the novel twice! I think there would be no other reincarnation novel in this site which can top this. The following are the reasons why one can reread the story/go back to this after reading others:

1. The MC/FL was consistent throughout the whole story. When she was reborn, she made up her mind to protect her loved ones/family by beating the people who want to harm them (including her) in their game. Which is why I think the romance was "slow". In her second life, when she had... more>> encounters with the ML, both of them at first were cautious of each other. She knows the fate of the ML in her past life but they never have interacted. Which in turn again, makes her be on guard of the ML and although she thought he was interesting, she wanted to make sure that the unknown person that is XJX won't cause her plans to fail, and XJX's actions won't harm her family. All her actions are for the protection and safety of her family that will be seen all throughout the story.

2. The MC can really be seen as someone who underwent rebirth. She never forgot her past life. Everything she did was based on it. She also never forgot about the people she loved whom she'd never see in her second life. For example: from time to time, we'll learn about her past children because she thinks of them, and her plans include avenging their deaths and sufferings, which is why we can sympathize with the children even though they do not exist in the current story line anymore. On my observation, some rebirth stories include female leads that died and had their children suffer a tragic fate too, but none of them had the same emotions as Shen Miao, this story's MC. Other stories will mention that they had children but they would be forgotten in the second life, making the readers also forget about them, and that is not the case in this. :) 3. She always succeeds but she is not a mary sue. On her current life, she can be considered a mary sue as it looked like she has suddenly gained wisdom and some skills overnight. However, as a reader, we'll discover how she was able to become who she currently is from her past life. It is true that she was an "idiot" in the past, but she also improved herself during that time. She can be seen as a person who can always accomplish things if she set her mind to it, however, the circumstances in her past life made her show that side of hers too late. I love how the story narrates the stories/reasons behind her skills and knowledge. For example: Shen Miao learning archery. I won't spoil, but reading how, why, and what led her to learning it was heartbreaking.

4. The story is detailed. Although the author was too detailed with XJX's eyebrows, it was nice reading about how things which can be considered as irrelevant, symbolize status, wisdom, and if it is wearable, the character of the person wearing it.

5. The relationship between SM and XJX. I love how their story progressed. They both respect each other's skills and let the other do their own thing as long as it will not harm theirs. XJX also treats SM as his equal. When their romance bloomed, although he was protective of her, he talks and plans with her. SM also continued taking actions in the later part of the story even without consulting XJX, because she has the ability to think and plan even without him, unlike other protagonists.

6. Reading the cultural differences between the three nations in the story was enjoyable. One can definitely imagine them. The story was able to show the differences between the imperial families, cuisine, clothing, officials, people (including the commoners), wealth, customs, etc., of the three nations.

7. The accuracy of the characterization. For example, the previous lover of SM was characterized as a person who is smart and effectively schemes quietly in the previous lifetime. In the current life, it is still the same. It is still shown that although SM has the advantage of knowing future events, her ex husband can still keep up with her if SM is not careful and thinks at least a step ahead of him. The characters do not suddenly become s*upid.

8. SM's family's character development especially towards the end. Her family's loyalty will in no doubt, kill them. I won't elaborate this is too long already ?

9. The story of her rebirth and the person who was directly involved with it.

10. The previous life of the ML and FL and the logic behind the ML being relevant to the FL in the second life.

There are still other reasons why one should read this and how one will read this twice or perhaps multiple times. So, if you're planning to read this, then do so because the only downside of this story is being superior to other reincarnation novels in this site which makes reading other of the same theme after hard. <<less

Wonderful rebirth story. Tired of the female MC who gets vengeful, faceslapping left and right and disregarding normal social norms? Then this book is a breath of fresh air.

The MC has just enough reason to hate her relatives, the royals and a whole bunch of other people, but with all that she still recognises her faults and mistakes she made in her past life. Instead of focusing all her energy being rude and searching for faceslapping opportunities, she instead plans ahead for her enemies and mostly her future.

Here there... more>> is no nugget in your heart when she retaliates that says "but these people haven't done anything wrong in this life yet" or "these people may change in this life, don't go looking for trouble" because each person she pays, clearly show their worth (lessness) in her new life. A TRUE COUNTERATTACK!

It is very satisfying.

Secondly, the MC acts her age. She lived for decades in her first life and in her rebirth, her maturity is clear to see.

To follow up, her opposition (the villians) are quite sensible. They think for themselves and skelter to save their hides when in trouble.

But one of the more satisfying facts is that the romance builds slowly. It's not a love at first sight for the dazzling beauty affair. Both characters are smart and sly, they make moves cautiously. So it develops slowly from passing interest to cautiousness to slight warmth towards the other party before we finally watch them fall in love. This pattern is particularly enjoyable for the next reason.

The male lead does not overshadow the MC by taking over her plans, revenge or being overprotective. Now this is a major reason! Other books see the ML as a cheat code, the female protagonist is smart and interesting till she meets the overpowered male lead who takes over, treats her like porcelain, does everything for her.

Faceslapping feels bet when done yourself!

Our MC grows and flourishes side by side with her man.

Now, the cons....

Too many words per chapter!

If you going to try to read this in one go, it's super hard.

Many times the plot is serious or flattering. When it gets filled with some many lines without the comedic flair, it may be a bit too much. I appreciate the writer's perchant for description and good writing skill, with flowing dialogues to support, but many times while I wished it was less. For this reason, minus one star! <<less

One of my most favorite cnovels of all time! Sad that it hasn't been completely translated yet but it is sooooo good that I kept rereading the latter parts even if I have to depend on machine-translated ones only! Ahh~~seriously recommend this! I say they're one of the best love teams of all!

Amazing MC and political intrigue plot. Realistic and mature, the villains have power and aren't s*upid, which just makes the face-slapping that much more addictively satisfying. Side characters are well rounded. The main draw is the MC, though. Her deducting and comedic timing is SO on point!!!

WARNING: after a few chapters you may also find yourself worshiping the Empress in the comments section.

Interactions with ML will make you: tense, smile, and laugh. The romance is a slow build until the second part (after the time skip in c122). The ML... more>> seems like a typical OP character, but there is a lot of build up for his mysterious back story which is intriguing. I very much like that the ML has a healthy respect for the MC and vice versa.

I've read a lot of historical Chinese transmigration stories, and this story is easily one of the best. <<less

I started reading this novel when it had ~45 chapters translated and kept up with it for a couple months. When it got to chapter 66, I stopped. Not because the novel was bad at all- it's one of the BEST f*ckING WEB NOVELS I've read of any genre, and damn near at the top of the list of those rebirth/reincarnation novels (it ties with Unruly Phoenix Xiaoyao for me since that delivers on the comedy). Seriously, though, this novel was so good I had to stop. I must let... more>> it build up chapters or I'll be heartbroken every time I've caught up. I'll probably review when I've finished the series but, for now, I'll give my impression on what makes this so good: the characters.

The initial premise is nothing we haven't seen before, but the characters absolutely bring this story to life. May absolute favorites are :

  1. The MC is smart, calculating, and ruthless, but not in an artificial way that we often see where the MC seems borderline psychopathic/autistic with her lack of empathy. She knows who she hates but doesn't feel a need to harm innocent people just to prove her badass-ery. She's also not illogically perfect like a lot of the characters from similar stories and doesn't stumble over (insert helpful plot device here) while wearing plot armor as thick as those cannon fodder antagonists that keep lining up for punishment. Long story... long, she's real- or, at least, as real as you can get in this type of novel.
  2. There are actual female friends. I repeat, there are actual female friends. Do you know what this means? It means not every female hates her unreasonably for attracting the Adonis male lead. Instead, there are girls who realise that there are actually other men in the novel *gasp* *shocked murmuring*. That's right, my friends, this author has deemed it suitable to give girls other than the MC common sense. Never thought I'd see the day.
  3. Even though he's not there, the MC actually has a father who cares about her and, you know, treats her like his offspring instead of an old plow horse.
  4. The male lead is impressive and, despite being a bit snooty, is somehow not an unreasonable d*ck about it. Few of these novels have better ML's (though the one in this story doesn't compare to the male lead of 重生复仇:腹黑嫡女-he was an absolute gem.
That's pretty much it. I'm excited to see the story unfold further. <<less

This is one of my favourite revenge rebirth story. We have a very smart and determined female lead with the only goal to get revenge. As much as she was naive and foolish in the past, as mush as she now does not rush, but meticulously plans and exploits her past knowledge to create an intricate chess game to trap all her past enemies.

We have a likeable male lead with a consistent personality. He does not immediately fall in love with her. He notices her as a capable girl who... more>> ruthlessly deals with the ones who tries to harm her, becoming interested in following her future actions without trying too hard to interfere. Their interactions are realistic as two people who carefully act in front of the other because they don't trust each other.

Finally, we have a well structured plot, although there are standard events such as r*pe and forced marriage, the story's flow is smooth and does not become repetitive or trivial.'

One of the main points of the novel is Shen Miao's independence: she gets intangled in difficult situations but she manages with willpower and wit to handle them and win. She does not need the help of any man. <<less

Though other rebirth novels have other things to recommend them, this was, hands down, the most thoroughly and consistently enjoyable one of the lot. Much less angst, much less tragedy, and it's pretty much smooth sailing for both the MC and her love interest. You never feel for a moment that the world they inhabit is not in the palm of their hand, so that, for both of them, teasing/watching each other becomes the really fun bit in an already plotted world. Extra points for the aspects of her previous... more>> life which are revealed late in the story which she never knew before she died - cute.

Edit. For those looking for a story with more struggle and realism, I would recommend 嫡女重生记, which might just be one of the best rebirth stories I have read so far, but is, unfortunately, yet to be translated. But go ahead and MTL it, it really is worth it. <<less

Unique, thrilling badassery. To put things succinctly, the protagonist was once an ignorant fool. However, after experiencing many wretched pains, physical and emotional alike, that the majority of the world would never experience to such a degree (mentioning the royal betrayal in her past life in the beginning of the story - literally royal), or such contrasting accumulations of experience in their entire lifetimes, the things that happen to her in her second life thus far are menial and very well underneath the point at which her composure would falter.... more>> In other words, she knows that the stuff that gets thrown at her (all those typical villains do is make her look better >:P) in her second life is nothing compared to the events she experienced in the past, so she doesn't feel sh*t. I've read too many soul and mind-swapping novels to count, so I couldn't help but get bored of them. However, despite that this novel has a somewhat similar concept, the fact that she travels back in time and in her own body as a bad ass pulls me into the story. The execution is good enough, I think, because I don't unconsciously focus on it or scrunch my face over errors. So seriously, give it a try. ≫:--) <<less
