Shen Miao, the Di daughter of a military family, was pure, quiet, gentle, and gracious. Because of her foolish love for Prince Ding, she forced her way into becoming his wife.

After six years of assisting her husband, she finally became the mother of the world: The Empress.

She had stayed with him during the fight for dominion over the empire and during the efforts to expand its territory. She even went so far as to put herself in danger and be taken hostage by a neighboring empire. In spite of this, when she returned to the Imperial Palace five years later, she no longer had a place in the Imperial Harem.

That beautiful woman he kept in his embrace gave her a bright, stunning smile and told her, “Older Sister, the country has settled down. It is time for you to step back as well.”

Her daughter died tragically and her son the Crown Prince was deposed. No one in her Shen family, who had been completely loyal to the Emperor, were spared. With arrival of a new reign, everything was overturned!

Shen Miao never thought that all of the perils they encountered as husband and wife, all of the assistance they gave each other mutually, were nothing but a joke in his eyes!

He told her, “Because you have been with this Emperor for more than two decades, this Emperor will allow you to keep an intact corpse. You should be grateful for this kindness.”

Beneath a meter of white silk, Shen Miao established a malicious oath: Once the day of reckoning arrives, every single one of you will die!

Once reborn, she returns to the year when she was only fourteen years old, a time when tragedy has not yet befallen, when her family still lived, and when she was still the pure, quiet, gentle, and gracious Di daughter of a military family.

Close relatives conceal evil intentions, her cousins are vicious and merciless, the new concubine is like tiger watching its prey and that s*um wants the previous life’s events to be repeated?

Her family must be protected, the great enmity must be avenged, and the prize must include the empire’s imperial throne. In this lifetime, let us see who comes out on top!

But that Xie Family’s young marquis, that tyrannical and arrogant spear-wielding young man on horseback, stays stubbornly on her side and proudly declares, “It is merely toppling the Imperial Family. Do not forget, the world belongs to you, and you—you belong to me!”

The Thirteen Capitals of You Zhou: This belongs to you.

The Ding Yuan City in the North Desert: This belongs to you.

The Southern River of Yu Zhou, the Eastern Sea of Ding Xi, the Green Lakes of Lin’an, the Ancient City of Luo Yang: All of these belong to you.

“Xie Jing Xing, if all of this belongs to me, then can you tell me what you want?”

“Alright, I want you.”

This is one of my favorite novels.

The MC really took advantage of her tragic past life. She is one of my favorite MC of all time because of how she is able to navigate her family and the political climate. She isn't all knowing, she has her flaws, but that's what makes her one of my favorites. I loved the way the story was developed as a whole.

If you are not new to the C-drama world, you will find that this story has everything bad about those dramas. However, if you aren't let me break down what I hated about this book:

  1. Toxic male lead who has to be better than the FL (coz males are always superior to females, right! SARCASM if you didn't get it).
  2. Describe the beauty of the FL and ML way too frequently, even when they are about to DIE. If you didn't want to write about 'a great beauty', just stick to the narrative. But, no! You had to make her look special every single episode. Honestly, if I see 'a matured look and killing intent in a cutesy face', I'd get creeped out. BUT everyone thinks it makes her more attractive for some reason.
  3. EVERYONE in the family (except for the immediate parents and bro) is a bad person. To be honest, I don't know why the irresponsible parents who left her all alone under the care of the relatives and believed their bullsh*t for years are "very kind". Because the reason is 'very believable' like the danger she may have encountered in the war zone, like her mother is not a war general and she can't be raised as a male warrior like her mom (eye roll). Grl I live in a war zone, so you ain't throwin that bs at me.
  4. The author's OBSESSION with s*xual violence. I think this author must have a grudge with females or have a bad kink. I've read a lot of revenge novels and the punishment for female bad guys are pretty similar to what men get. However, here the females are sexually violated into horrific extremes. Even the good females were ra*ed, tortured and blinded etc. And the guy who treats many females (including minors) like this just gets a clean death from a sword. So don't tell me to "don't read if you can't take it BS". Why would all the male villains are just stabbed and beheaded while the females go through pages of se*ual violence????? This is THE reason I'm dropping this novel. I'm out.

, their loyalty, friendship, bickering, ally ship, marriage, everything was great and didn’t feel sudden.

It’s just a shame that we didn’t get enough of it after a certain period of time and that the author did a massive weird rush job at the end, although the first extra and fourth one help ease the rush job a little but not really. There’s also some unanswered questions, like what was xjx searching for? Why was it made such a big deal of to be forgotten afterwards?!

One thing about the TL, it feels more like edited MTL for like the last quarter but is still readable and the TL notes disparaging the ML are off putting. There is absolutely no need for them to be in the middle of the text, if one must say something, it can easily got at the end of chapter in authors notes.

Anyway, you won’t be disappointed in reading this and I hope one day I can own a physical Eng TL copy of this novel. <<less

Don't pay attention to reviews written by people who haven't finished the novel. A lot of problems in the first half are resolved, explained, or addressed in the latter half. I don't usually feel this is the case, but for this novel it's imperative to read the whole thing before forming an opinion.

That said, I understand why some people don't finish it. Personally, I struggled with this novel in the first half because the romance progresses extremely slowly and I found the male lead extremely arrogant, indifferent, and even malicious... more>> to the female lead. I stuck with it for the meticulous revenge plots and I'm so grateful that I did. The romantic pay-off is incredibly sweet. But I still have to emphasize: if you're thinking of picking up the novel because the summary promises a doting love interest, be aware that it only happens in the latter half of the novel. In the first half, the male & female leads are deeply suspicious and even hostile towards each other. It takes a long time before the male lead starts chasing his wife in earnest, but it's absolutely worth the wait.

I will avoid addressing the details of the plot because it would be a total waste to spoil any of its intricate twists and turns. This novel isn't the longest but I did spend some time with it, because every paragraph has to be paid attention to in order to understand what's going on. It's not obtuse but it's also not meant to be skimmed.

To balance praise with criticism: the timeline doesn't match up in a number of places. This is never resolved in any way and I don't know why an entire year can pass without the characters' ages changing. Medical issues are also treated somewhat mystically. More than once, someone goes into a coma and it's treated as an Sleeping Beauty-esque "eternal sleep" instead of certain death via dehydration/starvation, which feels out of place because most of the novel is relatively grounded (besides the usual exaggeration of martial arts, poison abilities, and so on typical to these "historical" setting C-novels). Also if you're looking for any snu snu, look elsewhere. All the scenes are a total black-out. If it weren't for the heavy themes at play, this could pass for a shoujo novel.

Some forewarnings for those interested:

Spoiler

There are a number of scenes of the main character getting black-out drunk and in one scene, the ML does have s*x with the FL after initially saying he won't because she is intoxicated. The FL does not express discomfort with this behavior and it can be argued she indirectly consented beforehand, but take it as you will. On several occasions the ML uses physical force on the FL during an argument to make her stand still and look at him, and the novel does slightly lean into tropes about men being forceful in love toward women.

This novel has graphic depictions of mu*der, r*pe, torture, disfigurement, and emotional/physical/s*xual ab*se. The main character is herself never r*ped but at least one attempt is made. The main character has severe psychological trauma and some chapters will be emotionally trying. It is a HE but there is plenty of angst beforehand.

[collapse]

If you like second chance revenge-romance novels, this one is an absolute must-read. I binge read the whole thing and only wish there was more. It's both cerebral and emotionally compelling. 5/5. <<less

I actually start following the story since it was translated, I got to around 182 when I finally stop and stock chapters. It's only now that I started finishing where I left off.

The plot is good and memorable enough that after 5 years, the story is still fresh in my head. The plot is great and the characters are well-made, it just that it personally became a bit boring in the middle and the ending isn't that satisfying as it felt like a sleeping beauty story when it didn't have... more>> to be, however it's still a greatly recommend romance story.

The ML is very sweet and loving, just the right guy to heal the pain in MC's heart. The only complain I have is that they didn't give a bonus chapter of ML chasing our prior-rebirth MC who is madly in love with another guy, that would have been a great chapter to read.

Our MC is very scheming and smart after rebirth, yet foolish after drunk. I also like the touch of going mad upon being confronted by the female that really ruined her previous life.

There are also other love stories sprinkled in the story but was personally not that invested on them. I find MC's cousin too annoying for my liking, too irrelevant and bland in regards to MC's brother and friend, then personally do not like the ML's emperor brother to like that romance part.

This spoiler is r18+, please if you are below 18 or doesn't want any very le*d comment- just don't click this spoiler below.

Spoiler

I'm sorry but HOW COULD YOU SAY YOU LOVE SOMEONE YET MANAGE TO DO NIGHTLY DUTY WITH OTHERS AND EVEN GET ONE PREGNANT? Like, I don't know if the author is aware but you need that thing to stand up to even begin the act and unless you have a very weird kink, I refuse to believe you can make it stand up for others yet claim they devotedly love another. Tho, yeah they are pitiful but hey that's the consequence of their action.

[collapse]

I actually felt more invested and PITY on one of the Shen Household than the rest of the side-main romance stories.

Spoiler

I forgot which household, the 3rd? the one who doesn't have any concubine and only have 1 child. As been numerous stated in the story, it's rare for a man to have no concubine, in that aspect I respect that villain guy and thus felt a bit sad upon being scheme for their love to break apart. Tho it's understandable since that guy's wife set that trap for MC's dad and thus deserve whatever trap she was planning. However, it just feel too rush and incoherent in my opinion to suddenly claim that they never love each other and it was merely a give and take. If the guy really wanted a son, why wait for more than 10 years? Why not mention it during those years? As mentioned, it's normal to have concubines and thus it would be easy for the guy to shove it to his wife during those times. It's not like wife's family is big, and since it's not love then... why? I might be forgetting details hence why, but if it's really this case then all I can say is how sad their life is.

Like that wife could easily be the next rebirth person of a foolish wife believing his husband and schemed for him and her child not realizing how little she was actually valued and thus given opportunity to redo and fix her mistakes. Then again almost everyone had this potential, can't help it when the story is about rebirth, okay. You couldn't help but think of the what ifs like if this character rebirthed after and what not.

Actually, I finished reading this two years ago and now finally have the mood to make a review.

At first, I was a bit hesitant because people say something about the translation, but I'm glad I decided to read it anyway. Previously, I didn't read novel. I was more into manga, manhwa, webtoon. This is my very first novel I read. It makes me want to read more novels, especially similar to this genre. I finally know why people enjoy reading novel. This novel is so addicting from start to finish.... more>> The story is amazing. There's so much face-slapping. Overall, it's an exiciting story with satisfying revenge plot, great romance and also unexpectedly, a little bit of tragedy that is really impactful to the plot and my heart as well. I felt satistied and happy when I finished this one.

Thanks to author and translator for bringing such a masterpiece for us to enjoy. <<less

Honestly, I read this almost 3 years ago before writing this review because I found it again the other day and remembered how good it is. The best part about this novel is that the female lead is truly at times "malicious". It's so tiring to read novels where the FL has been scorned and abandoned but does not take the revenge she deserves. Compared to some other novels where the entire thing is just "face slapping" people in the past who had done her wrong, this one actually makes... more>> some sense. The ML and FL don't just immediately fall in love for no reason, there's actually reasoning behind her actions. Their relationship does go a little downhill near the end but it's honestly not bad.

It's pretty fluffy overall and the ending is satisfying enough. <<less

I understand how one can be frustrated by how the ML steals the limelight by being smarter than the MC because we want a badass and intelligent MC, for I, too, feel the same.

But we have to remember that MC only relying on past lives to be able to be that cunning, her advantage is she knowing future happenings, to some extent, and her being able to deal with prince ding and imperial family mainly relying on her understanding of them.

We also have to remember that her schemes arent the... more>> most clever either if all the characters are placed from the same starting point, if she's that clever/cunning she wont die horribly in her first life

But ML is different, with his vast resources ofc he will be more knowledgeable, when in battle the most crucial thing is information. MC get information from her past live, by which in currnt life ofc some things are changed, but ML has vast network of timely information. Aside from information, we have to take into account the subordinates, ML has many trained subordinates, while MC is a 14 y.o girl without real power, it'll be strange if the MC outwit the ML <<less

First of all, @zazajunie translation is not bad despite the abundance of spelling error as I can still somewhat understand the content that are being delivered. No offense but my advice is that if you're translating anything, you should check it somewhere first for any spelling error.

Here are some pros and cons for this novel:

Pros:

  • A not bad drama between MC and the other character.
  • Decent plot in the beginning.
  • Su Min Lang.
Cons:

  • The author did not elaborate most of the plot on the latter part of the novel
  • Spoiler

SM behaved like an idiotic girl when she saw Mei at the Prince Rui residence, although this can be justified by saying that the experience of her past life has scarred her deeply hence the attitude, but in my opinion it should not be too extreme as it was in the novel, at least she should conceal her hatred not blatantly announcing it to the surrounding character.

    [collapse]
  • Spoiler

The herb is wasted on Pei Lang as he literally has no contribution to the story after he is healed. In my opinion, it should be used on Emperor Yong Le as on the later part of the story, the effect that Emperor Yong Le has on the story is bigger than Pei Lang. Well I can guess that the author want to somehow Make XJX the emperor of Great Liang that he/she is willing to sacrifice the two lovebirds. If that were the case, at least do further explanation and elaboration on XJX days as the Emperor but nope! All I can say that Emperor Yong Le and the Empress died for nothing.

    [collapse]
  • The later part of the story seems to be written in a rush to end the story and it's very sloppy.
  • Not enough Su Min Lang content on later part of the novel.
  • Spoiler

There is no confrontation/explanation/elaboration between XJX and Su Min Feng when XJX is attacking Ming Qi. What did Su Min Feng do when he met XJX? Do they fight to the death? Or did they reconcile?

    [collapse]
My final verdict is that this novel is like a chewing gum, very tasty in the beginning but sooner or later it is extremely bland with no flavor at all and you kept chewing for the sake of chewing.

I created an account just to write a review for this novel because this is the first time I've seen a translator almost ruining the novel for me. (눈_눈)

I'm usually not that picky about small grammar or spelling errors or having lots of T/N's but the person who translated this novel did not do it justice. (¬、¬) The amount of grammar and spelling errors were not enough to make the novel incomprehensible, but just enough to get on your nerves. ノಠ_ಠノ

In the first few chapters, I... more>> saw someone ask in the comments if the grammar improves; NO! It's the opposite. The grammar actually isn't bad in the beginning but it steadily gets worse (until the point I have read to).

But the biggest gripe I have is the unprofessional-ness that the translator and editors have shown through the T/N's.

Usually T/N's are notes for the translator, about the TRANSLATION. They are not supposed to be personal commentary channels. I find it tolerable and sometimes even amiable if these types of comments are in moderation. But for this novel's translation, especially because of the critical and sarcastic nature of these comments, they just rubbed me the wrong way. (♯▼皿▼) To the translator (and editor), I would like to say:

'If you do not like the writing style of the author, you are entitled to your own opinion. However, as a translator, it is not your job to add your personal flavour to the book by way of commentary. It would be more economical to invest your time proofreading and editing before publishing.'

And besides, the point which they complained so much about - the long, flowery descriptions of the male lead's handsomeness - was a reason I liked this book more. ( ̄︿ ̄)

I felt the author may have intentionally done this to break gender stereotypes. As it is usually female leads who are praised for their beauty countless times in such arduous descriptions full of overused tropes. But in our society, this is the norm which no one complains about. Thus, I find it even more ironic and hypocritical that the translators and editors complained about this. (¬_¬;)

Not to mention, from a writer's perspective, it is very commendable of the author to portray the male lead's attractiveness in this true-to-life way. Appearance cannot be expressed through a book any other way, thus the author was simply committed to fully expressing the male lead's handsomeness. (๑˘︶˘๑)

Besides the subpar translations, I think this is one of my favourite novels of all time. The female lead is definitely her own woman and is super smart and the male lead is very charming and is very capable of matching her amazing-ness.╰ (*´︶`*) ╯♡

However to someone who is about to read the book, I would warn that the villains present are simply too hateful. They make you boil with anger at their antics and s*upidity. (ʘдʘ╬) Buuut it's all good because the author delivers some very satisfying face slapping. (ღ˘⌣˘ღ) <<less

i've been spending the last 5 days binge reading this and in the beginning, I still had a normal lifestyle. And then afterwards, it progressively got worse as I was reading till 3am every night but still had work the next day, so it was just lack of sleep piling on every day after. Agony. But also I could never learn the previous night's lesson. It was worth it.

but finally, it's over, and I'm very sad about it. It's been awhile where i've felt like this. I absolutely loved this... more>> book to death, and I love both of the FL & ML very much.

there are so many areas where I just want to bookmark to reread often. There are also a lot of times where I am rereading the same sentence multiple times just to savor it. In the eng tl, there's a lot of mistakes, and it got hard sometimes to understand what the translated line was trying to get through, but based on how much I loved the overall style, I was able to get past that hurdle.

i really wish this would be able to have a cdrama adaptation. Would've loved to see all of the scheming and all of the characters brought to life. This story may not be perfect, but it was perfect to me. Full 5 stars. <<less

THIS WAS LEGIT THE MOST AMAZING READ

I'm also kind of sad now because I feel like I'm already ruined for other novels that have the same concept. This was just too amazing. It took me for a crazy ride. So many times I laughed, cried, laughed some more, cursed out the villains, clapped at all the face-slapping, and then ugly cried, then laughed and smiled like a loon. I. Cannot.

I think this is a pretty well written story, but some parts personally doesn't gel with me.

The plot is well planned, unlike many stories where the MC goes oh he/she planned this, thus results just falls into their lap without much effort, the author describes the mc's actions meticulously planned without much glaring holes and plot armor. Character and events are described in great detail, hence side characters are more fleshed out than typical throwaway side cast in other series.

What I'm not a fan of is the use of r*pe... more>> and genocide (of families) as revenge tool, I understand that she had withstood quite a bit of brutality from her time before the time jump but the pre emptive revenge doesn't feel satisfying for me as some of her victims have only wronged her in the past but hasn't done anything major as of her return. (Eg, the eunuch boi who literally just got hired got f-ed by her as in the future (past?) he was made to execute her, she allowed the r*pe and social su*cide of her cousin when all she did up to the point point was to mislead her into being gaudy as a kid).

I'm also not a fan of the authors excessively flowery description of the male love interest, which feels a little like trying to create THE dream bad boi for the MC to tame. The authors meandering language on the story which at times leads to great character and world building is sometimes just extra, such as taking what feels like one whole chapter for 10 minute sequence of a character challenging the MC.

In conclusion, not bad, not my cup of tea. <<less

It feels like I'm going against the grain here, but I didn't love this novel as everyone else seems to.

I've got to say this is probably my favorite novel of this theme so far. I love the MC, I like that she isn't completely OP and her actions were simply with her character's means (a noble daughter) and sort of with a realistic touch. I like how she successfully schemed to protect herself and family on her own using her own wits without the knowledge of her family, it just made that part where XJX told her parents everything that she did all the more touching for me.

that scheme against that s*um imperial family member was seriously delicious, the way she used others to eliminate her enemy was so well done tbh

[collapse]

SM was the best FL for me, I just love her (i love smart MC's that schemes let others do the work for them and watch the show then reap rewards lol). Also, the author really came through in creating a bond between our leads, SM and XJX had solid moments where you could feel the romance between them churning which made it all the more convincing and moving.

But most of all I liked how solid the plot felt. The storyline flowed well and everything was wrapped up pretty nice, the crucial characters was given their highlights and had a decent character building (for better or worse)

Spoiler

Especially the story behind how the reincarnation happened and how our leads were connected by fate, because that quality was rare to find in other stories with this theme (trust me i've read tons). So that made me love this all the more.

If you're into the reincarnation genre, this is a mustworthy read I tell you. <<less

I really like how our empress deal with her enemies, like she's so damn badass. She's far from those pathetic girls who only know how to spout revenge and just rely on their husband or whatever

She also told her husband about her rebirth though in a form of dream and our jing xing is just so cute when he's on teasing mode

And also that ye mei, she deserves what happened to her. So what if she was tortured to death, who told her to be a scheming bit*h and put our empress shen to a tough situation

Well, that was amazing. I've picked up and dropped this series a couple of times before, thinking it was overhyped, but it really shows its best in the later chapters. There's a bit of a lull halfway through, in the 130-150ish area, and a bit of a genre divergence in 190-210.

The pacing and plot is tight throughout, and what I really like about it is that aside from being reborn, there are zero cheats for Shen Miao. She has no space, no legendary martial arts skills, nothing except bitter lessons... more>> from a previous life. While attracting the attention of the male lead honestly could be considered a cheat, she also attracts the attention of many other powerful men who are very undesirable, making it a two-edged sword.

The other thing I very much enjoyed about this novel was it's clever usage of turning other people's schemes back on themselves. Outside of a few particular cases, Shen Miao tends not to go looking for trouble, and generally doesn't strike unless struck at. She also has a tendency to divert two enemies toward each other, which is both very intelligent and also very enjoyable. It makes a lot of the violence much more ethically palatable when you consider that whatever is happening had been planned for her in the first place.

Although the stakes rise as the story goes on, the main character doesn't get more and more vicious. Instead, she starts losing her taste for gloating over her fallen enemies, becoming tired and jaded of revenge, and eventually is able to put it aside in search of a better future. I enjoy this form of character development much more than unnecessary gore thrown in to keep readers.

Now for the male lead. XJX honestly is a bit of a bore in the early chapters. I want to say the author tried too hard with him early on, trying to paint him as the most perfectly handsome mysterious powerful man (and tiger) evah, I tended to skip over his sections (the translator's reactions to entire paragraphs of nonsensical graceful moonlight descriptions are hilarious though). The romance comes very slow, so he doesn't get character development for a good long time. However, I really began warming to him in the second half of the book, and I'll tell you why.

It's because XJX is that rarest and most mysterious breed of handsome billionaire CEO - a man who sincerely respects the opinions of the female lead. There are bajillions of CNs out there whose "romance" ends up being half r*pe, and it is super disconcerting. Not so here! She gives an opinion, and he thinks it's a good one. He gives an opinion and she agrees. He's attracted to her clever mind, instead of falling in love at first sight. He backs off when she sets boundaries and doesn't push her for s*x. He trusts her to uphold her end of things and they work together like an actual couple! Holy shit! Am I even still reading a Chinese novel?!

Shen Miao (usually drunk) actually ends up being the main initiator of most of the intimate scenes, and I love it. I must have bust a gut laughing on their postponed wedding night.

Last but not least: the translation is readable. While I've got to commend the translation team on completing such a difficult and longish novel, it is a bit hard to get used to the style as it's still very much Chinese grammar. It would be a lot of work, but would definitely benefit from an editor going back over it to rephrase sentences, so that it flowed better in English. <<less
