Tondemo Skill de Isekai Hourou Meshi

I, Mukouda Tsuyoshi, was caught up in a summoning circle into a different world where sword and magical skills are the norm.

However, when the summoners cast ‘Status Appraisal’ on us, the three other people who were summoned with me had [Heroes from Another World] in the occupation box, whereas I was the [Random Guy Caught Up in the Summoning Spell].

As for our ‘Skill Set’, the three Heroes had outrageous sounding skills rolling after their names like [Holy Sword Technique], [Holy Spear Technique] and [Sacred Magic].

In fact, I too have a skill you know? My one skill is called… [Net Super]…

Because it’s clearly not a combat skill, I am automatically treated like garbage.

Furthermore, the King of the country who had summoned us looked really shady.

As a veteran lightnovel reader, I can read the atmosphere well enough to come to the conclusion that ‘This is a bad world to be summoned into’.

Thus, it is decided. No matter what, I must get out of this castle as soon as possible and escape from this rotten country!

Traveling, going on adventures, cooking and eating, THE COMEDY IS THE BEST! The characters are hilarious and the story is amazing and the manga is awesome

(I don't think there's anything wrong with a coward character, it makes it more funny and it's ok to be scared of things you don't know about, it's kind of reassuring. And it's nice that there are no harem)

I don't find this funny... I really don't like this story.

I really don't understand the humor of this author... the notion that an MC needs to be such a cuckold has always rubbed me the wrong way, there is "good person" and then there is "push over s*upid" guess where does the MC falls into?... his "haha funny" bits are repetitive, over and over and over it's the same s*upid little joke...

You're supposed to create an MC that is somewhat relatable, but no one in their right mind would act... more>> the way this MC acts... I don't like to rate works based on feelings that's why the stars I put don't reflect my review, because I know it would be unfair, this is of the few reviews I'll talk about my taste, not only technique from the author...

The author is competent enough, his work haves a very good pacing and world building for a novel of this kind, it's not so much an exposition dump, the world is vast but elusive and blurry because of this, which is fine we can get there later, that's a big part of the charm.

The actions scenes are great!, incredible even, you can clearly see what is happening and the fluidity I can only hope to find on translated works doesn't falter at all.

The dialog and interactions between the characters is very well done, the development of the story haves set up and pay off, although a bit short sighted, it still works (not everyone can write an epic with set up from several chapters behind)

The problem I have with all this, is that it's wasted on a very very very dumb "haha I'm a weak coward" joke... which is the only joke you'll find here, no other jokes are made... self depreciation for me, isn't funny... it's a set up for things to come, 175 chapters and it's still the same joke... character growth? can you eat it?

I don't really mind works without character growth... but I can't for the life of me, enjoy a person like this.

And it's even worse when you know it's a blatant lie from chapter one.

EDIT: I've being reading the Manga, and it's much MUCH better over there... just wanted to leave this note because I was caught up with most of what I wanted to catch up and didn't have anything to read and saw my review and noticed that someone else said that the manga is much better.

He doesn't come off as a whimpy whinny guy, and the character interactions are more fleshed out and there is MORE than one punch line whereas here it seems that the sole focus of the story is "I'm a coward" over there it shows more things much better. <<less

I think people were expecting a lot from the action tag or the premise, but it never said our MC wanted to be strong or has any problems being weak. It's a very chill novel, something you pass the time with but can stop anytime, doesn't hype you too much but it doesn't leave you empty as well. It's a slow plot, not exactly slow life for the MC, but plot-wise there doesn't seem to be much changes. Like I said, it's a simple novel. MC gets ridiculous familiars, stays... more>> normal and himself (so far?), just a typical modern guy with cooking skills. Nothing out of ordinary about him. Every chapter is either his business chores or getting dragged to an adventure with his battle maniacs.

Basically, if you want to read this novel, don't bring in any expectation and you'll enjoy this quite nicely. Just because there's isekai OP novels everywhere doesn't mean each one has to be. This is the break novel you're looking for. And I love it. <<less

I was pretty excited about this series after reading the synopsis, but as people have already stated, it promises a story better than the one presented.

It's very slow paced. I honestly don't have any problems with slow paced stories, but this one is so slow that gets boring. It doesn't help that there are chapters only focused on food. The story simply doesn't progress. You could skip entire chapters and still it wouldn't affect your understanding of the novel three chapters later. Also, there's no world building. If the author... more>> hadn't said that the MC went to another country, you'd think the MC was still in the same place the novel started. There is barely nothing that distinguishes one place from another besides their names.

Feru was the reason I started reading this. I like pets. I don't really like Feru. He reminds me of a spoiled child and the MC is the parent who obeys to every wish of his child.

It isn't the greeeeatest novel of all times, but it isn't truly bad. If you have the patience, go for it! <<less

Unless you are really into isekai-food-fantasy, I cannot recommend this novel. Everything - plot, characters, wordbuilding - comes as an afterthought arranged around the premise of the protagonist cooking up Japanese-ish dishes in another world. Said protagonist also worries a lot about danger and revealing his abilities, which becomes quite annoying later on

Spoiler

after he gets a divine blessing that makes him literally immune to any damage, poison and the like. On top of his pets being incomparable powerhouses that can also conjure up impenetrable barriers

[collapse]

It doesn't matter much though, because the plot is meh at best in the first place and every other chapter exclusively focuses on him cooking and feeding others.

The most positive thing I can say about the novel is that the translation quality is solid.

This is a drama-free isekai novel with unoriginal plot and bland characters. Read only if you have nothing else to read, or if you are really into the cooking stuff. <<less

Hello,

Translator here~

I choose this novel for one very good reason: Nothing happens.

... more>> That's right. I like it because Nothing Happens, literally!

No romance, no epic fights, no war, no huge economical changes, no great shifts in power (influenced by the MC, something happened, but it had nothing to do with the MC, not even peripherally).

It's great.

I know that some people will probably hate it, lol, all those one star reviews. However, I personally enjoy the epic nothingness. There's also the leisurely cooking, like, it was all lazy cooking using bullion cubes and instant soup mixes and ginger in tube. Minced ginger in tubes!! Sacrilege! Lol!

Also the title, I can't believe it's called Campfire Cooking of all things because if there's one thing the MC (or author) can't do is proper

barbecuing

...

Ahem, so, yeah. I got all the drama from that. Lol.

Who needs troublesome drama ?

This is what I live for~ <<less

I just came off from skim reading chapter 80... This novel did have other heroes in the beginning right? When will we ever get to having at least 1 or 2 chapters perspectives on them? This novel should honestly have its "action" genre tag removed, as there is hardly any action going on, since the protagonist doesn't do jack sh*t and leaves all the fighting to his minions - to which that usually ends in a matter of a few short sentences.

... You can tell from my reactions above... more>> that this novel isn't a good read at all, at least imho. Unless you're the type of person who loves cooking or love reading about cooking to death in every single chapter, you won't get much excitement reading this novel. Yes, I have watched other slice of life anime such as Natsume Yuujinchou, so I do love my share of slice-of-life from time to time, but even for me this novel is boring as heck. <<less

Food, and getting hungry and an interesting spin on isekais, just like the manga dungeon meshi where the focus is food, and a nice take on repeating plots. I recommend this solely because its different and feels fun despite being a short read

If you like summoned to a different world setting, maybe you will like this, I guess I can compare the story to shield hero-sama, but mellow type story and different kind of skills, I was also imagining that this might be a the different alternate and multiverse of shield hero-sama if you already finish the story of that you would understand it, the story is kind of slice of life, just like satou-san life including his food adventures, and yes the MC is kinda OP but not that totally OP... more>> that he can one punch the monster, one he has is a skill summoning different kind of foods and somehow he attracts OP monster. So if youre interested please do so read this novel I guarantee it that you will like. Also I guess I am a bit of bias about it but I kinda like the manga more because the setup of it is really same with the novel. Hopefully this will continue and will attract more people. <<less

I say this about a lot of LN stories, but this story has potential.

MC is op in the sense that he could break the world's economy, and the giant mythical wolf that follows him is the OP 'power' which also gets him valuable goods that have nothing to do with his own powers.

The writing is better than other stories i've read; I just hope the translator comes back. Will edit for a more detailed review later when more chapters come out, but for now I would recommend this only to... more>> people that are patient enough to wait for more releases. <<less

I'm writing this after reading Chapter 12. Despite the slow pace, the story is really starting to move along. He's gained his first familiar. From the cover art, I can see that he'll encounter probably at least one more. He's dual registering with the merchant guild and the adventurer guild because his pet brings back high-quality prey for him to cook and the leftovers can be sold to the adventurer guild. I think this story has a ton of potential. The translator just announced that they are dropping the series,... more>> though. Guess, this is another could-have-been, unless it's picked up. <<less

I liked the story so far. But I think I'm gonna stop here on chapter 306. It's just starting to turn me off.

I watched the anime but it wasn't enough so I read the manga then read the novel. It's an interesting take on the isekai genre with the MC being an average person and there being no romance or harem tag.

Spoiler

So, what happened is that the MC bought a huge house which was basically a palace. He needed trustworthy people to maintain and guard the house since he's an adventurer and he travels often. Then, it was suggested that he look for s*aves since they can have contracts that are strict on these conditions. So, he went to the s*ave trader.

Up to this point it was ok. As someone from the modern world, the MC was reluctant to have s*aves but he needed them since he had a lot of secrets.

Now what turned me off was when the s*ave trader was asking for his preferences. Basically, the MC wanted girls who would ehem with him. Well, yo. Wtf. I'm disappointed.

Gladly, that didn't happen. But still, this disappointed me enough to stop reading.

To be honest, s*aves are normal in that world so it's understandable that the MC was getting used to the customs. There's also the s*aves tag so I was somewhat expecting it. But really, s*x s*aves? Like bruhhh.

[collapse]

I understand that he's pent up but like why? That was a hella huge turn-off and with the MC's personality, it was a bit OOC. I'm not sure what would happen in the future but this will be the end of the journey for me. I was really dissappointed.

Important words must be said thrice. <<less

An interesting premise completely f*cking ruined by one of the most cowardly male MCs I've read in the past decade, bar none. I'll be the first to admit that I don't like Slice of Life because it's VERY OFTEN written very poorly with little wit or intelligence put into it. And this reads like someone borderline ret*rded wrote it (not slamming the translator; when you get garbage in, you get garbage out). This was a painful read because I liked the premise and it DID actually start off pretty... more>> strong. But like most typical tr*sh JP light/web novels, it very quickly devolves into shit, going nowhere with a character who literally has no brain. Let's get into the biggest issue with this series.

Mukouda is the epitome of everything wrong in Slice of Life stories:

  1. Cowardly to a god damned fault.
  2. No personality to speak of. If he's not talking about food, he's being a little beta bit*h cowering in the corner. There is no in-between. He is this flat as a character. And he never changes.
  3. Doesn't properly use his powers because he's afraid that he'll draw too much attention (this trope, in particular, grates my nerves because they still end up drawing attention no matter what they do, so their complaining only makes things worse for the reader).
This story also suffers from a LOT of Slice of Life issues as well, namely that the whole f*cking world and literally every character within it are one-dimensional. Is it honestly so hard to make a SoL series that doesn't literally go nowhere for hundreds of chapters? FFS, at least have some god damned character development. I don't understand how anyone, especially the Japanese, think that this is entertaining in any way.

Ispheria's review on the conversations is 100% correct and never deviates from this formula. It's boring, trite, and wastes the reader's god damn time with pointless, mindless drivel. I wouldn't be nearly so infuriated with this idiotic series if the descriptions were actually GOOD. Food pr0n descriptions are amazing and would've elevated this to at least a 3 star, even if literally nothing else changed since there would be SOMETHING entertaining to read.

I had a lot of hope for the goddess Ninrir. But when she showed up, she became just as one-dimensional as Mukouda. My sadness was immense, and my day was ruined. This author literally just put simple thought to paper, looked at it, and went, "YES! This is what I want! Absolutely bland characters with no personality whatsoever completely guided by the thought of food!" This series honestly reads like a really badly written fanfic written by a 6 year old (because comparing this to the writings of a 12 year old would be disrespectful to the 12 year old). And even that's pushing it because I've read things written by preschooler nieces and nephews with better thought process than this garbage story. Believe that!

For the people who actually like this garbage: you really need to up your standards. There's far better SoL series out there. This is an affront to the reader's time and mental ability to process thought and reason. I can easily take this premise and, with nothing changed whatsoever, turn it into golden reading without much effort at all. At the very least I would be able to write better food descriptions other than "YUMMY!" <<less

If I was rating the raws I would have given it a 0/5 and probably would have long stopped reading this. The TL has done some serious work here to the point that I'm surprised.

I know most of these authors don't even imagine their work getting translated and read by foreigners and that exactly limits it's worth, that in itself is a massive shackle... all the continuous ramblings on the same thing just spouting delicious, delicious every single line... like are you trying to fit in some word limit per... more>> chapter by adding in those pointless lines... It makes sense that it's a webnovel but it's so horribly unrefined.

The MC is honestly unrelatable and his views on things I hope he keeps it to himself. The s*ave incident and all that sh*t in the raws (I checked it cause the TL commented a bit on it) and I was like bruh... some things are better not said. Also there's a fact that a part of the characters authors make have a tiny bit of themselves here and there and from this my overall impression of the author is really bad (I hope I'm wrong about that).

Other than that... it's mostly about food that from a point I honestly started skipping it (I would only be ever convinced to read it if it were more compressed like in a manga). The exploration wouldn't have happened at all if not for his familiars... The gods were honestly disappointing and not even amused me as a part of comedic relief...

Conclusion: This solely gained 3/5 (+1 for the TL or it would be 2/5 solely based on the story and it's plot and characters) because of the efforts of the amazing TLs to make it even worth reading it. The raw rating is 0/5. <<less

Protagonist has very good ability. Hed probably live a leisure life if he wanted but because he is cowardly and too soft, he becomes a s*ave to gods and his familiars. Like getting forced to do the cooking. Or getting forced to dungeons or forest, I dont see him at all relaxing for even a week and enjoying his money. Or being forced to gift the gods the products of earth. Getting tired of isekais with MC with soft personalities. I like kind MCs but its annoying when they know... more>> theyre being taken advantaged of yet they wont say no to it specially when saying no wont really cause harm. The good part of the MC compared to other isekai japanese MCs are, he doesnt allow himself being taken advantage of of humans and he's a thinker and keeps secrets of his own and knows what could possibly be abnormal to the others. He's even sharp for going to the country of Leonhart where there is no discrimination of species.

Update edit:

Tried reading the MTL. It was hard but I enjoyed the chill and happy moments. But most of the interactions of him and other people in power like dealing with the merchant, guild leaders and also the king is that he's so submissive. I mean he doesnt really get the fact that the mere point of him being the tamer of Fenrir and the *spoiler* dragon is that he is above them in power although not physically and influentially. But he could destroy nations if he wanted too. But he doesnt ab*se that and thats nice. Its angering when he bows to them, he's scared of them, he's nervous of the king as if the king could do something on him. He's too polite. He's too generous if you consider the fact that he has already gifted the royal family several times with loots he got from dungeons. Gifts the nobles the count beauty products. Submits to the merchants to sell more of the beauty products. Guild master scolding him because his large dragon is seen flying at it alarms cities but he doesnt even explain it to them and he doesnt even have a choice. Because the dragon just forces him to it. It makes people in power think of him as meek and easy to bully. And he is. He even got angry at the fenrir and the dragon for being "disrespectful" to the king, wtff. The protagonist doesnt have the balls honestly. He is too weak. He's not even a good businessman. His familiars are the ones ordering him to go to dungeons to hunt. Makes readers think who are the real masters or is he just their feeder. Even the gods are taking advantage of him. Author should give the story a twist for a change. Too much humility is disastrous, just shows how weak minded he is. Get that single ability from him, net supermarket. For sure, only Sui his slime will stick with him til the end. Economies are booming because of him and he doesnt realize it and yet he lets king and nobles talk down on him. He is s*upid and he doesnt know his worth. The worth of his familiars are his worth. He doesnt fully understand that. Because in the end, he is just a food s*ave to them. He got away from the kingdom who summoned him to avoid being mistreated only to be mistreated and worse is he doesnt realize it. He is a natural prey of the bullies. <<less

MC is not OP, but familiar is super OP. He is a coward and I can imagine if this adapted into anime the dialogue will mostly have Kyaaa...!!! Huaaaaa...!!! Save me...!!! (tremble with fear) Despite no real danger approaching.

After 8 volumes of the LN, I (unlike the main character) decided to respect myself and stop accepting tr*sh in my life.

Jokes aside I'd give the LN a 2.5 at best. It was ok the first couple of volumes but it gets so repetitive. I wouldn't mind if the characters were better but they're all just so similar. It's a shame all that potential just gets left there to grow stale. It's all just so lazy. And on that note the author leaves just lists of irrelevant monster materials in. Onestly I think it's an ok cooking novel.

The cooking parts are nice, so I find it an ok relaxing read, but everything else is just disappointing.

It's like if for any good thing there's a bad one and vice-versa.

For example I find the main cast much more interesting that the copy-paste harem team so many isekais have, but at the same time the dialogue is often very repetitive (especially during/after meals) and relationships between the main cast seem to never pregress, with almost no character development. As an example, I would... more>> have found very entrataining to have Feru and Mukouda's relationship become better with time, with Feru starting to respect Mukouda and Mukouda begin to see Feru as more than just the wolf he's stuck with; it almost seems like they just tollerate each other, like they aren't even friends.

Also they didn't make the MC an unbeatable fighting machine, which makes for nice moments in the dungeons, but since his companions are, the interactions with almost everyone are the classic ego-pandering "someone asks for an important favor, the MC solves it very easily, he gets a huge reward and then everyone clapped" sort of thing.

So onestly I think this novel is only an ok read if you want a relaxing cooking story and are fine with bearing through the cliches and boring parts. <<less
