When he woke up, Wen Chi transmigrated into a book.

In the book, the protagonist accidentally obtained a system, and with the help of the system, he pretended to be sick and escaped his engagement with the disabled Crown Prince. Then, at the peach blossom banquet, he demonstrated his extraordinary talent and attracted the attention of the fourth prince…

Finally, everything went well between the protagonist shou and the fourth prince and they fell in love very deeply. The fourth prince overthrew the rule of the previous emperors and became a model royal husband.

However…….

Wen Chi transmigrated and became the cannon fodder brother of the protagonist shou, and he was the one who was forced to replace the protagonist to marry the disabled Crown Prince.

It was rumored that the disabled Crown Prince was burned by fire five years ago. Not only was his face disfigured, but his legs also ended up being disabled. He lived deep in the Eastern Palace and stayed behind closed doors all year round. He had a very strange temper.

Only Wen Chi knew that the disabled Crown Prince would still become the emperor and became a famous tyrant in history. Unfortunately, he was later killed by the fourth prince for being too cruel. Even the cannon fodder, he was not spared, and he ended up tragically.

On the wedding night, the disabled Crown Prince grabbed Wen Chi’s chin. He sneered: “Here comes another one who wants to step on me to climb up.”

Wen Chi in silent tears: “No, no, no. I’m only sitting around waiting to die.”

The disabled Crown Prince: “???”

I was entertained while reading this but I kinda struggled to finish it. The beginning was promising but the couple's dynamics by the middle frustrated me.

* (SPOILER) Idk why the author at times made their love seem fake or forced. I would have prefered if they just fell in love in a more natural way, without the appearance of the aphrodisiac blood or stone to restrict the MC's movements in order to help or make him stay with the ML. It made me feel that the ML didn't really like... more>> the MC at all, which made the story drag out for me.*

Also the lack of communication between the MC and ML was frustrating, it just felt like they can't communicate like a normal equal couple about important things, there were lots of secrets coming from the ML and the MC was too passive about it for my taste. Overall, I was expecting more true love to develop from this couple but it didn't seem like it.

I did like the plot twist at the end though. It made me cry, not in a sad way but it actually moved me.

* (Spoiler) But then looking back, it made me realize that the ML could have behaved in a sweeter manner to the MC since way before, made me felt like something was missing in their interactions.*

But overall I appreciate that the author tried to make something different with that plot twist, it probably was the main point of this novel, so I give it 3 stars. <<less

Okay... The author writes well. But too bad this one isn't to my liking.

The MC is too timid. Perhaps he have his own reason. And I understand that he just tried to keep his life. It's not so easy to maintain a relationship with someone with such strange temperament that can talk and laugh with you just now but the next second will strangle you to death just because of a small thing. And yeah... strangely enough the crown prince a. k. a our ML has this kind of "behavior".

And... more>> perhaps this "behavior" of his isn't without a reason.

Okay. So, The MC is too timid. Because he is afraid of death. At this point, I can understand but honestly, at the same time, it makes me feel uncomfortable. I dunno why but I just don't like his timidity. I don't feel that he is cute. Not at all. He is not a rabbit. His timidity only makes me cringe... 😓

I tried so hard to persist. I said to myself not to drop this story. But still I can't bring myself to continue. Not because the story itself is not good. But because I don't feel comfortable about MC. And ML. ML makes me think that he is a psychopath... 🙄

The conclusion is... yeah... I dropped this story already... <<less

It's been a long time since I've been so angry while reading.

In short, I believe that the author wrote a lot of unnecessary things that don't add anything to the progression of the story, in addition to leaving a lot of loose ends and some of the ones that were resolved were very rushed, without a good explanation.

The moment I got the angriest was because around chapter 70, I created a hypothesis about what would happen and this hypothesis proved to be correct, but only around chapter 145 onwards. In... more>> other words, my hypothesis was the main plot of the novel... which I already expected in chapter 70... and no, I didn't look at the novel's tags, because if I had, maybe I would have discovered it earlier.

I was upset that this was the main plot, because nothing surprising happened in the meantime, everything was very predictable, the novel is also very long, which also made reading tiring.

The only thing I really liked was MC Wen Chi, because I think he's a character you can identify with, he's normal, he doesn't have superpowers or superintelligence, and I could easily do many of the actions he takes myself.

About the couple Wen Chi and Shi Ye, I like it. Shi Ye is the classic crazy ML, but in relation to the MC he's cute. However, this cuteness takes a while to appear and in the beginning there are several red flags. I also believe that the novel literally forced Wen Chi to be with Shi Ye and if the story hadn't forced it, it's unlikely that Wen Chi would have ended up with Shi Ye (Unlikely, but not impossible), but I didn't like this forcing.

Speaking more clearly and with spoilers relevant to the novel's plot, read at your own risk!

Spoiler

I imagined, around chapter 70, that it was Wen Chi going back to the past, to Shi Ye's childhood, and he was Shi Ye's personal "enemy". But is this the big plot twist of the story? Disappointing.

Even more so because this time travel didn't make any sense. I (and I believe many readers) expected that the reason Wen Chi went to the past was to find a cure for Shi Ye's poison, but he returns to the present with nothing, only the knowledge of Shi Ye's childhood and that Shi Ye had been waiting for him all this time, and the novel ends...

I went to read the extras, only to find out that the poison in Shi Ye's body miraculously disappeared... Seriously?!

It is understood that it was the spiritual stone that cured Shi Ye, but that is also very bad, because the power that we were shown that the stone had was the "System" and if you did what it told you, you would have your wish granted. But, the "System" didn't appear, the poison was cured, so what was the point of Wen Chi going to the past?!

The poison itself also doesn't make sense. Shi Ye's father cared about him when he was a child, but at one point he poisoned Shi Ye with something that has no antidote, but then he needs Shi Ye's blood and that of a child to maybe resurrect the love of his life... So why poison Shi Ye?!

The author also made this child appear twice and then never appeared again.

There are a few more things that I found meaningless or unnecessary, but I've already written too much

3/5 ⭐️ - Utterly disappointed, and very sad. I really tried to push through with it but it just did not work out.

I’m not one to like cowardly MC’s but I totally understand that the MC cries and whatnot because of the ML’s reputation and as a survival skill against him. I was actually babying the MC and really liked him and how he wanted to try to go against Wen Liang’s system, however, I started disliking him as I got to the later two-thirds of the novel and could... more>> not put up with it any longer.

On the other hand, I found myself loving the ML a whole lot, I could see his efforts and his lack of experience as he tries his best behind the scenes for the MC. I love his stubborn and stern personality and how he always pushes his bottom line lower for the MC... he’s also a stinky lovable vinegar jar.

Things I did not like at all (SPOILERS) :

  • Spoiler
    • The development between the MC and ML was great until the MC left to Jinzhou or wherever it was. This and everything afterwards got boring.
    • The MC embarked to Jinzhou to help against the locusts and it was a trip lasting about 3 years, yet it seemed like a very pointless trip as he barely did anything notable.
    • After the MC and ML did the deed, the MC asked about contraceptives to a maid, although some part of him was debating on whether he even wanted a child. And when the ML appears and tells him to take the contraceptive (because now was not the best time to have a child as their lives are in the light while the enemies are in the dark), the MC gets disappointed, pissed, and starts hating the ML, even as ML tries to explain to the MC.
    • ^ What got me even more mad was that he deliberately avoids the ML because of this incident and decides that he wants nothing to do with the ML. The story continues and the only thing he cares about (even after the 2 year timeskip) is divorce! All the small budding affections that I noticed MC was starting to spout from the first 70 or so chapters was shattered just like that!
    • And, despite the ML pushing his bottom line down countless times for the MC, the MC still believes he amounts to nothing. The ML takes his (MC’s) socks off, personally bathes him, rescues him countless times, is always worried about him, feeds him his blood, ruffles his hair, reads his books, etc., which he does for NO ONE, and it equals “I weigh nothing to him”. Even the fact ML had MC learn how to do martial arts so that MC can defend himself when nobody is with him, was that just for display? Ugh.
    [collapse]
It’s absolutely painful to see the ML try so many times to be kind to the MC, or suppress his cruel nature so that he can appeal to the MC, only for the MC to disregard all his good points. The ML grew up in a hostile environment, always fending for himself, doubting his own existence and not having proper guidance on love, yet you can clearly see him trying. He doesn’t say it directly to the MC, but you can see and feel how his actions speak so much more than any words could ever express. I’m utterly disappointed, and my high hopes for this novel were crushed. I really gave it the benefit of the doubt. <<less

I didn't like it. Many annoying cliches. Like talking too much on how good ML or MC look. Or a clueless MC who doesn't know about ML's feelings. One day MC is extremely scared of ML and even takes the initiative and offers to serve him in bed. Another day he is rebellious and rude.

There are no smuts and so far I did not like the romance in the book either, it is not satisfying.

MC is really annoying and there is no reason for ML to actually like him. The... more>> story doesn't give enough reason for ML's love.

Regarding the rest of the plot (excluding romance). So far not the best, but it is not terrible either. <<less

I'm not going to sugarcoat this: The ML is absolutely horrible. Although his backstory is pitiful, he's clearly absolutely clueless about relationships or how he should treat other people.

Honestly he behaves exactly like how I expect actual emperor's to behave - overbearing, disregarding of human lives. He treats MC poorly (even though I'm sure in his mind he thinks he's treating him very well, because he treats people in general even worse), can't take no for an answer, and is VERY pushy and demanding of MC. There's times when it... more>> almost goes to r*pe territory, to be honest. You could say he has a miserable life or considering his backstory it's kind of understandable or whatever but, to be honest, I don't agree at all.

MC has a weird characterization too - I can't tell if he's genuinely feeling desperation because of his current life or if he's acting in front of the emperor in hopes he spares his life. Sometimes he acts smart but then he throws thantrums or is oblivious and dense. A lot of reviews complain only about the MC, but honestly, at least where I left the story, I didn't think he was the biggest issue here. MC has to be on constant guard so the ML doesn't outright kill him for no reason. We kind of know later that ML wouldn't actually kill him (maybe... probably), but still. I see no appeal in this type of relationship where one person is constantly on their toes.

It gets better later on (with MC actually kind of trying to stand up for himself) and ML gets less drastic but I don't see the worth in continuing. You'll enjoy this if you don't mind this type of power imbalance or these types of twisted MLs. The story is very focused on romance, so if you don't vibe with this, the plot or world building doesn't make it worth it to give it a try. <<less

My problems mainly comes from the MC. He is a total push over with almost no backbone and a brain.

Speaking with the ML I can understand his spineless actions, but with other people he also doesnt know what the word "No" means and lets himself be pushed and trampled.

I know his lies to avoid punishment should come over as the comedy part of the story, but in my eyes he is just making my inpression of his IQ drop continously.

I dont have anything against cowards but in novels I do... more>> prefer them more to be more cautious und use his brain too.

I quit. Its just unbearable the more I read. <<less

Spoiler

I wont spoil much but I wish there were more happy days in the end coz damn their experiences are horriying to be in. MC got kidnapped a lot of times by either the prince or just trafficers. ML kept of getting stabbed by swords/ambushed. I told you guys before that he got in coma and just woke up when MC gave birth to a prince. And MC bled to much too. The extra chapters inside the palace aint enough for me. Yes you guys guessed it. They became the monarch. Shin Ye as the emperor, Wen Chi as the Empress. And their 1st prince as the crown prince. His name is Shi Fan. It was revealed in the last chapter and youll see how jealous ML is to this baby lol 😭😭😭 before that, they were 3 years married and got separated because MC wanted to solve the plague. Well, he was told to do so by the emperor before. ML was cowardly because within 2 years of separation he actually visits MC but never shows himself 😅

I know my timeline is all over the place but I only binged read this within 2 days and I still havent move on

Spoiler

Concubine Rong that is the previous emperor's wife became mad or insane and her daughter and son followed suite. They were killed afterwards from execution. This prince kidnapped our MC and put him and tried to kill him via fire. This is where he met this lil kid *wink* that kid is significant afterwards. MC learned the truth about our MLs full family story. Including the frozen corpse of the previous empress which is MLs mother

I just read "Marked by a Tyrant After Transmigrating" before reading this, these two stories have almost the same concept.

STORY

It was interesting,

... more>> The author managed to make me laugh and shed a couple of tears.

I like the story when it starts towards the last moment it makes me curious, it explains all the strange things in the story so you have an "aha" moment

Wen Chi, he is an entertainer in this story... making the story funny and interesting.

Shi Ye at first I felt he lacked a humanity where he often threw something to Zhu eunuch head, please don't be like that he is also human too and very old alredy... but after understand Shi Ye story its normal for him to became like this because of his childhood and inhuman parents.

Personally I feel sorry for the 4th prince Shi Jin, I think he was innocent and just a victim of his mother's incitement...

Wen Liang is also very pitiful, what did he do wrong? running away from an arranged marriage? and it was also planned by Shi Ye too... he just wants to marry a good husband

I think they both deserve a better ending.

The disappointment

I came here to read MPREG hahahah why did the baby only appear at the end of the extra story? the baby was also mentioned only in a few words.... (a couple of text, you don't even know how the baby look like) or probably there is another extra that I don't get free online..

UPDATE 02 April 2023

I accidentally found an extra, even though it's been quite a while but I tried to remember the main story and continued reading this funny and very satisfying extras.

They have a son named Xiao Xia Thian. The problem is they are trying to accept their premature and ugly wrinkled baby who look like monkeys LOL and Shi Ye, who is jealous of his premature son for taking Wen Chi's attention. <<less

This is a heavily spoiled review:

I would have said this novel simply didn't fall into the hands of its rightful audience, but then I read the extras.

It started with an ML who was exactly as promised: a TYRANT. Don't expect him to be a gentleman. He wasn't abusive, but he's not the type you could comfortably chat with either (you could easily die if you're not MC). MC truly struggled a lot in the beginning. However, I felt the transition between emotions and the development into romance was half-smooth,... more>> with a minor hiccup you could easily overlook (probably cuz I stopped thinking too deeply along the way).

Spoiler

For example, MC was ready to leave the palace, but when he couldn't, he suddenly found himself madly in love with ML. I attributed this to dependency and ML's situation (ahem, extra spoiler alert...

|

|

|

ML was dying, and MC couldn't bear to see the once-strong ML suddenly giving up everything and saying goodbye). (Or maybe I just missed something.) But it's still a fact that romance was never forced.

[collapse]

Anyway, it was good till the end, though it felt kinda rushed. You really need to read the extras (1 or 2) to somewhat understand the loose ends

Spoiler

except for that mysterious force that controlled MC a few times, starting when he first met his bio dad and was told to marry ML, which I had to use my rich imagination to believe (somewhat) the stone was truly controlling him so he would marry ML, and stay by his side as an after effect of his future wish to.... (better not spoil what that is)

[collapse]

But then...

Spoiler

I was super happy to see ML excited to see his son every day after court. It felt amazing! After all, I don't like when MLs compete with their children for "mom's" attention. However, in the very next chapter, ML is suddenly dissatisfied with his son and only wants to be with MC, acting like a jealous vinegar jar.

Now, I know I said I don't like that type of ML, but that doesn't mean it's inherently annoying. I already know what they're like, after all. Buuuuut it becomes extra annoying when the author raises my expectations so high with fluffy scenes of ML doting on his son, only to then show ML not paying him any attention anymore and always angry with him whenever MC is looking at him.

Yeah, ML still spoils him by getting him anything he wants, and maybe he's just frustrated. But as a ruler, as an emperor, you don't bully your subjects just because you had a quarrel with your wife. Acting like a child in front of MC? Fine. Acting like that while doing your job? Not fine.

[collapse]

I still like the story somewhat, so it's not bad overall—just the extras left a bad taste in my mouth. <<less

I agree with the previous comment that said that the MC is annoying, I really regret giving this story a 4 star rating, if it weren't for the MC, I might have given it 5 stars. The plot itself is good, the ML is also very interesting, a typical overbearing president who is indeed scary because he kills people very easily. The MC himself is a coward and a crybaby, but that's not the point I want to talk about. For a person from the 21st century, who has read... more>> the novel story 3 times and he is still useless is too much in my opinion (except when he overcomes the locust plague, in my opinion he is useless at all for the ML and he is more like a burden to the ML in my opinion) I don't want him to be OP but at least try if he really wants to survive, when he knows that the 'system' that helps the OG MC has been released from the OG MC he just stays silent, makes no effort to take back the spirit stone, in my opinion if the MC had taken the stone from General Lin from the beginning there would be no bloodbath in the kingdom. This MC is afraid of death, doesn't like pain, but he is really s*upid (s*upid here I mean he can't analyze the situation from the information he gets from the book and the reality), plus he can't think maturely. I continued reading until I finished it myself because I was curious about the ML, and felt that the ML was the one who got more character development. <<less

This novel is very, very good. First off, it's hilarious. MC's antics with the ML are so funny and they just keep bouncing off each other, with the ML making the MC nervous and therefore making him do ridiculous things to keep his head from flying lol.

The biggest thing I really had the pleasure of reading about was the character development. Neither the MC nor the ML are the people they were at the start of the novel. They both change for the better, and it was really great watching... more>> it unfold.

The plot is fantastic and there's so much intrigue and mystery hovering beyond the typical love story of the main characters. You get to know about the ML's backstory and his history, and the MC doesn't actually stay weak. He gets some strength and power of his own! It's all super interesting. Plus there's a huge plot twist and it's all so satisfying in the end. Nothing is left untouched and unexplained. You'll see. ;) If you're a fan of major character development and can endure cowardly and cold/ruthless characters for a while, I recommend this novel for you! :3 <<less

I have read many stories and it is very rare for me to stop reading in the middle of the story.

But this story is one of them, which I stopped reading around chapter 107... to be honest the story itself isn't too bad, the plot (even though up to chapter 107 there are still lots of things being added without any resolution) can still be said to make sense and be connected to each other other.

What doesn't make sense is just the execution of the relationship between MC and ML...... more>> I understand that the author wanted to make a "cruel ML and naive MC" type story but it was really executed very badly.

Even some braindead stories have more better execution.

Like, I already felt that there were many things that were odd about the author's execution of the MC and ML approach in chapters 70-80, but I persisted and continued reading because I wanted to know the ending, but I really couldn't take it anymore.

There are indeed moments where MC and ML feel close, but in the future they will only lose that feeling and what remains is only awkwardness because the author failed to develop a picture of their relationship. <<less

Let me just say, this is a novel that really draws out the mystery aspect. I think the author did a good job keeping the tension high, but at the same time, the lack of payoffs and the seemingly random settings made me want to stop reading several times (until I eventually gave up XD). It’s not a bad read, I think it’s quite good, and I have every intention to come back and reread it when the TL is further along (a large chunk of why I stopped despite... more>> persisting for so long is that the MTL is not the best. Most of the content is comprehensible, but all the details and subtext are completely lost @.@). So yeah, I thought it would be best to wait.

SUMMARY: The cowardly MC, Wen Chi, transmigrates into a cannon fodder from a novel he had read (surprisingly, this aspect doesn’t play that big a role, it’s just a plot device.) In the novel, he gets married off to the big villain in place of the protagonist shou, and as a result, he ends up with a bad end. Upon transmigrating, the MC does make an attempt to change things once, only to find that he was inexplicably controlled by something. As such, he gives up trying... and just lets himself be married off lolol. The situation at the Crown Prince’s (the ML, Shi Ye) Palace is a bit weird though. Based on outward appearances, the ML is content to treat him as a toy, though he’s a uniquely favored toy (and he’s quite cruel about it too sometimes). However, there’s some secret behind the scenes, and the MC discovers the truth as the story continues.

THOUGHTS: TBH, I don’t dislike the MC’s cowardly nature, cause I thought it was a unique characterization and found it interesting. However, his lack of proactive ness makes me feel really exasperated at times. He’s really just being pushed along by the current of plot little by little. He has no big ambition, and though he does make a few moves that made me believe he had potential, for the most part, he doesn’t do much. In contrast, the ML perhaps does too much XD. He does so many things, but with the mysterious-ness of his background, it can be a bit frustrating to guess his thoughts.

All in all, the characters are a bit iffy for me. Maybe I’ll like them more as the story goes along. But that’ll have to wait for my next reread! <<less
