When he woke up, Wen Chi transmigrated into a book.

In the book, the protagonist accidentally obtained a system, and with the help of the system, he pretended to be sick and escaped his engagement with the disabled Crown Prince. Then, at the peach blossom banquet, he demonstrated his extraordinary talent and attracted the attention of the fourth prince…

Finally, everything went well between the protagonist shou and the fourth prince and they fell in love very deeply. The fourth prince overthrew the rule of the previous emperors and became a model royal husband.

However…….

Wen Chi transmigrated and became the cannon fodder brother of the protagonist shou, and he was the one who was forced to replace the protagonist to marry the disabled Crown Prince.

It was rumored that the disabled Crown Prince was burned by fire five years ago. Not only was his face disfigured, but his legs also ended up being disabled. He lived deep in the Eastern Palace and stayed behind closed doors all year round. He had a very strange temper.

Only Wen Chi knew that the disabled Crown Prince would still become the emperor and became a famous tyrant in history. Unfortunately, he was later killed by the fourth prince for being too cruel. Even the cannon fodder, he was not spared, and he ended up tragically.

On the wedding night, the disabled Crown Prince grabbed Wen Chi’s chin. He sneered: “Here comes another one who wants to step on me to climb up.”

Wen Chi in silent tears: “No, no, no. I’m only sitting around waiting to die.”

The disabled Crown Prince: “???”

I would say that their interation is really interesting and cute in it own twisted way😂 MC always use his mouth like he seeking death. Keep on poking at ML's bottom line everytime to the point that I think if he's really ok in his head...

And ML is absolutely not ok in his head... there must be something wrong in his brain but consider an environment he live and growing up, it's reasonable. I also love how the cold blood tyrant become so childish when stays with ML. It's a... more>> good character development.

Translation is fine and getting better and better with each chapter! Thank you Translator-san!!

There's many plot that still need to be solved so I'm a bit excited to read the conclusion of this story and hope that author-san can clear up every plot he/she plans. <<less

It's not a bad novel. The characterization of a cowardly protagonist and a tyrannic lead was what attracted my attention in the first place.

Wen Chi is not really just pure cowardly, he's just cautious because he thinks he's going to die. He's more afraid of pain compared to the idea of being dead (wow, same dude). Underneath the goody two shoes personality and his rainbow farting, he bears a temper that made him snap back to the lead when push comes to shove. That's realistic, those outbursts comes out when... more>> he's too emotional e.g. He felt too humiliated or he's in danger. Wen Chi's too caught up with the idea of the book tho. He got no attachment with the OG's past relations but the fact that he's waiting for the system and his brother to screw them over just to get implicated with the war between Shi Jin and Shin Ye was - s*upid. Not that I want to do anything either if I was in his place. (We're just both cannon fodders bros and gals.)

Due to his experience in the past, Shi Ye got no care for other people, not even his father- the emperor. Because he's got the capability, he do what he wants. This personality of his made him be reknowned as a tyrant to the public. His attitude and temperament sure is tyrannic but some of his actions was done for his defense. He trusts no one so faced with the rabbit-like acting of Wen Chi- he got curious. The s*upidity and Wen Chi's routine of sucking up to him made him amused and thus, letting him accompany him. At times, he crosses the line when teasing Wen Chi and the result of this is that Wen Chi's not lowering his idea that one move will anger Shi Ye. It does not help that all their interactions, he always highlights his class as a royalty who can take Wen Chi's head off. Lmao, what makes these boys so pitiful is that he's seen as whimsical so Wen Chi do not see any of his advances or acts of jealousy as something that infers romantic feelings to the other. Shi Ye is also oblivious to the change of tides, he thinks Wen Chi is his so that's why hos feelings are just of possession. Maybe it is, the relationship has not yet progressed.

The pacing is so slowww, there's still power imbalance in their dynamics that made fear palpable among other things. Is the romance there already? I can see something change what with the jealousy but man, the sudden insert of the fragrant blood that influenced their actions made it kind of meh. We have both couple pair who still haven't seen their attraction to one another- the other was still filled with fright and the remaining one was still stuck in the past. Awkward.

I know, I know I reap what I sow. I read the tags of the story but the story still waned my interest. Maybe in the future I would revisit but for now I'll pause. I want to see other novels first. <<less

I was so hesitant to read this because of some of the reviews but I have to say that I really really enjoyed this. I didn't feel like there was any unnecessary filler tbh, and it didn't feel draggy at all to me. I found the humour really good, it was so hilarious. Even the second-hand embarassment parts were really funny; I honestly didnt mind the MC being very timid and "s*upid" (as some people have commented). His character is more realistic to me tbh, he's not some kind of... more>> peerless beauty who's super intelligent and is talented at everything. He's just an ordinary guy who's understandably terrified of a tyrant and wants to laze around and live a comfortable life lol. He's also so funny, especially when he's "rainbow farting". (His no.1 talent is being able to spout exaggerated nonsense praises to survive lmao)

The romance is soooo cute! I love the idea of big scary tyrant turning soft and gentle for the MC. From the very beginning, it was cute cuz ML loved to tease MC and MC has the cutest reactions bc he's the most timid lil mouse lmao. But the character development is great bc the ML starts becoming more and more gentle and sweet while the MC becomes braver and stands up for himself more.

There's also just the right amount of plot and mystery interspersed throughout all the romance, fluff and humour. So overall, I really liked this! <<less

It's a bit unusual as a CNovel, there are twists and turns, some are very typical in these type of stories but there are some which surprising. Wen Chi is a funny character, he is weak, a coward, with no special talent but not annoying. He is sometimes pretty tough too.

As others also mentioned, it could've been a bit shorter but the length is bearable.

3.8 teetering on a 4.0 for me~

This book carried great momentum, starting straight away when our MC Wen Chi finds himself the transmigrated second Wen son who's involved in a brother-swap scheme to prevent the first son from marrying the tyrant Crown Prince. Immediately, we're carried through palace intrigue, minimal exposition, and a vague looming System that Wen Chi, as a transmigrated cannon fodder character, is actively aware of but cannot control.

There's several interesting points here that engage readers who may be already used to the "transmigrated into the cannon... more>> fodder X whatever" plot, primarily the fact that there's a System that is 100% NOT in WC's court and the mystery that surrounds the cold Crown Prince Shi Ye who's playing 4D chess with WC's ass such that our poor protagonist must resort to tricky and calculating shows of cowardice (that of course, bloom into more authentic confidence and assertiveness later on as genuine feelings develop between the CP).

Here's why I think I'd give this book a re-read:

    • Wen Chi is such a fun character; his inner monologue is logical for a modern man experiencing constant crisis and incredulity with the prince but it's apparent he's got some genuine bravery
      Spoiler

flashback to when he literally stabs SY's uncle to death because he's furious that the man poisoned and crippled SY. Chills.

      [collapse]
that even he himself is not aware of. It's fun to see him fall for SY at a slow-to-medium burn
    • Also this book is Omegaverse with WC being a Ger/omega and oh my god his immediate reaction had me rolling (>w>) and the inevitable "oh no master wen is vomiting in the mornings, whatever could be the matter" scenes were funny lol
    • WC is so quoteable holy sh*t "Is there anything more humiliating in the world than a woman standing naked in front of a man and the man not being moved? There is. That is, a straight man standing fully naked in front of a disfigured disabled man and being driven out by that disabled man mercilessly." Fs in chat for WC lmao
    • Shi Ye is also more interesting than the typical 'disabled tyrant' gong that we usually see in these novels. By the end of the book with all revealed, we are able to actually put clues together (motivating a second read to catch all the crumbs!) and get logic for why SY is the way he is and why he treats WC so.
    • SY is brutal and genuinely terrifying but also. So funny when it comes to WC, like he'll brutally f*ck some NPC up and tell WC who's watching on in horror, "he was like this when I got him :| "
    • Oh also I loved the plot point of the System stone being passed around, it got lost and picked up and really was a great narrative device to push forward action in the beginning
    • Finally, there were some CRAZY PLOT TWISTS that left my jaw agape; everything is logical and definitely not pulled out of the author's ass, but learning that
      Spoiler

Shi Ye's parents were SIBLINGS KAJSDFHKDSADHFASK and also that SY knew to expect WC due to seeing his ghost form in childhood and so he ARRANGED FOR THE BROTHER SWAP MARRIAGE THING TO HAPPEN??????!! HOLY

      [collapse]
    • Overall the book had some plot points and side characters that dropped off or were slightly unfulfilling
      Spoiler

totally thought Ping An and Hua Yin would have a bigger impact in the action displayed; like a lot happened 'off screen'

      [collapse]
but scenes like kidnappings, assassination attempts, palace banquets, etc. Were resolved with some actual effort put in and no certainty that everyone would come out OK, which made me want to read faster to make sure my babies were good <3
    • Extra points for Omegaverse baby, extra points for a loveable fluffy fox character, extra points for WC accidentally gifting his cousin-in-law some ancient d*ldos (~w~) >
Favorite SY quote: "'I didn't cry.' Shi Ye said very calmly, 'It's just tears flowing out of my eyes.'"

Favorite WC quote: *accidentally says 'f*ck' because his husband is infuriating* "When Shi Ye saw that he was silent, his eyes became colder and colder. Wen Chi felt the low air pressure emanating from Shi Ye's body. He opened his mouth and said, 'I once read in a wild book, the word f*ck has a beautiful meaning.' 'It means yearning, worship and a form of deepest respect. That is to say, ' Wen Chi lost his mind and said, 'The reason why I said the word 'f*ck' to Your Royal Highness is because I admire Your Royal Highness so much. If His Highness could let me f*ck you once, then I will have no regrets in this life.'" <<less

The translator gave notice that the mpreg trope wouldn't play a major role in this book so I happily dived into it. Up until the mpreg part becomes relevant this is a splendid page-turner. In chapters 81-82 mpreg has been enough that I'm already done. It's not a trope that I particularly like currently and I trusted the trans' notes a bit too much in this case.

Completed the story and I have to say that it is mediocre.

Timid protagonist whom I feel is realistic. He's an otaku (mentioned many times) in modern times who goes back to ancient times where things are so different. Naturally he's going to be scared, cry, and almost faint when he sees blood and death. Getting threatened a lot in the beginning isn't helping and so I think MC's reactions to whatever's happening around is VALID. He does become stronger later on, slowly but surely standing up for himself against... more>> the overbearing but pitiful ML.

Story has a lot of time skips. But its basically about MC transmigrating, meeting the ML and marrying the ML, being forced to obey the plot, and finding out palace intrigues with a dash of time travel and romance.

I found that MC and ML lack time to build a deep relationship despite great chemistry. MC's antics is super funny and when he's with the ML lots of fun scenes are there. But due to the palace intrigues and ML not sharing his problems with MC, MC being far away and literally not taking part in the plot unless necessary... it kinda kills the romance part and makes the story dull imo. Like MC just knows "there's problems in the Capital" but we as readers along with MC don't get much info until much later. To me, the reading experience just isn't captivating enough.

I just know ML sneaks to find MC, MC pines for ML but goddarn what is actually happening in the plot? NOTHING.

I haven't reached the time travel part which I'm guessing will make the story worth it but I'm 100 chapters in a 150 chapter story and I still know fairly nothing much about the drama and it bores me. EDIT: Completed the time travel section and it is sooooo little and not as interesting as I thought it would be.

Antagonists or ori shou are defeated so easily and casually too. I dislike the fact that the story does not elaborate on what's happening. For example in one chapter Concubine Rong is trying to convince Shi Jin to rebel. Next few chapters are about MC being kidnapped by the Hua family and ML saving him. After that we find out Shi Jin is already in prison and about to be exiled. Like what???? It's like finding out Luke Skywalker has plans to destroy the Death Star and next we find out oh, yeap its been destroyed. So many scenes in the novel is like this. It is terrifyingly DULL.

Will not reread despite the excellent translation. Gave a four due to that. <<less

I find that the transmigration plot was not really needed, and it was not even explained. There are too many useless long scenes that bring nothing to the plot, like fighting over not drinking the bitter medecine. And in my opinion the extra chapters sucks. I despise the parent/child competition/jealousy over the attention of the other parent.

What is nice is seeing the MC and ML relationship dynamic change over time, because MC become more assertive instead of staying a meek coward.

the ML was separated from the MC, but how the scene between the two unfolded, what were the actual reasons were not made clear at that point of time so I was left thinking that the MC turned cold/ indifferent really unexpectedly. (Just as unexpectadly the romance came, but oh well...)

Also, the whole system didnt actually make sense.

I don't know why in asian culture (and not only) jealousy of your own child is so prevalent, but personally I dislike it. I don't understand why we have an mpreg setting when the author probably think like that. Plus, how could the author have the ML behave/ have these thoughts after all he 's been through.

First of all I appreciate the translator work. Thank you and hope you continue to share your talents.

Now review:

I just think it's weird we are reading from THIS MC POV, he is realistic, I feel like if a powerless, normal, otaku-type of guy transmigrated this would be it. But he has no qualities of a Main Character, I understand the author wrote a salted fish but he's such a passive character that we don't really also know what happens in the world, he is so lucky to survive.

I don't particularly... more>> hate the ML he's true to his character design but sometimes I need the romance between MC & ML has some kind of respect between partners, during and after the chasing.

BUT BUT WHAT I DO LOVE WHICH CAME LATE is the Palace drama, which was made clear. It really was a complicated family relationship. It was more interesting cause of the conflicting feelings. But it was a small part of the novel.

The big chunk of the novel was the repetitive thing about HOW THE COLD COLD ML TREATS HIS LOVER SPECIAL BUT MC IS SO DUMB TO BELIEVE IT.

I wish the MC character growth in living in this world and adapting to his identity and body was highlighted more. <<less

This story was pretty good. If the tags are what you like/are okay with, I'd recommend this novel. There is a small twist in the later half of the novel that I didn't expect but it added onto the enjoyment of the novel for me.
Spoiler

It was when Wen Chi went into the past with the spirit stone. I like how some details from this part of their past connects to their future, such as Shi Ye painting a phoneix that looks like a chicken which was what Wen Chi originally painted, or how A'Gu was adopted by them.

[collapse]

About the MC, Wen Chi:

I like him lol he's a timid type of MC and a softie but changes a bit later. Some ppl might find his character annoying since he does cry quite a bit and his help doesn't always actually turn out helpful, but he's doing his best. I personally like soft/clingy MCs so the Wen Chi as a character is not dislikeable to me.

About the ML, Shi Ye:

I also like him too lol he's the ruthless-to-everyone-but-the-MC type of character. However, the MC doesn't completely understands the MLs sentiments sometimes because the ML is also the cold on the outside but warm on the inside type of person (poor guy went through so much so he isn't very expressive with his emotions lol).

If these types of characters aren't your cup of tea, then you might not enjoy the novel as much.

The story itself wasn't bad. It had some intrigue but mostly focuses on the MC and ML. There are some misunderstandings in their relationship which eventually gets solved (and could've been done sooner if they openly communicated). It isn't unreasonable though, bc like I said, the ML isn't the emotionally expressive type and the story is HE, so you know everything works out in the end. <<less

I’m at chp 52 and currently I’m at a 6/10 (will update rating as I read). I don’t mind the wimpy scared ML. However, what the flip is with the weird first love making scene?!

I’d give it a high rating if the first love scene was better, the interaction between the other characters where more talked on (let’s see better world building), and if the “system” didn’t seemed to be constantly accidentally forgotten about (I feel like it should have been talked more about???). Idk. Will update.

The story is.. Ok. Quite good. I like how the plot progressed, the side character setting and their personality. I really wanted to give it 5* but near the end, I keep getting mad reading abt MC, and how he had no character development at all.

I want to rant so much abt how

Spoiler

The MC was supposed to be a working adult in his og world. Yes I understand he can be a coward when he got thrown into a ancient world and involved in royals and their power struggle. But!!! He and ML has gone through life and death, assasination attempts, kidnapping, power struggle in the court, facing with the harem, learning martial arts etc.. But the MC's personalities feels like declining, from an adult male to a high school girl?! MC kept bickering with ML over unnecessaries matters, he kept ignoring things that is supposed to harm him, (like when he ignored the stone ML gave him when other ppl are willing to die for it, and he kept thinking of helping Wen Liang, even though if Wen Liang protagonist halo shines meaning that he and Shi Ye will die). His antics like he doesnt want to eat med (is it cute in these authors pov, coz ive read a lot cn novels with shou that hated to eat med like they were forcing some death and life situation), how the MC keep act spoiled and fight with the ML.. Tsk.. He has been living in that ancient world for years, and with all the situation he has been, I wanted a character development, but in the end (extra), all I read is a spoiled, girlish, extra coquetish MC who didnt know how to take responsibilities of his own status in the palace.... Wow cant believe I got so mad over a character welp

[collapse]

I didnt like the ML at the beginning, but after I read through all his sob backstory, I can understand why he grew up with that kind of personality.. But the MC, as a modern adult who already in a working society... His personality at the end of the novel lowered my rating of this novel. The plot of the novel is good, but can be better if theres a character development after all what happens..

I especially like the servant girl Ruo Fang, she was supposed to be so much younger than the MC, but her thinking and talk matured with the novel progressing, from a simple and fun girl who only help to make cakes to someone who can analyze why ML do such things for the MC and make MC use his head at needed times.

Complete (100% read) highly recommended! I love characters who are in waaaaay over their heads but try so hard to live a good life QwQ Wen Chi is an amazing character and while he's clearly absolutely lost in the Scheme Sauce; it's genuinely really heartwarming to watch him grow. Also the plots really are well built and the whole cast is really excellently written!

[3.8 rounded it to 4] liked it at first, but felt draggy later on

The novel is worth a read, for those who don't mind some unexplained things and waiting for the truth (slow burn). The author does better in writing and building the plot than the romance. The relationship and emotionality between characters could have been more delved upon more.

It was pretty engaging on the first half of the story (around c1-c90), I really enjoyed the plot, the comedy is well done, despite the characters being questionable sometimes. I liked... more>> the MC and was really looking forward for the truth of everything.

But then on the last half, despite me not minding slow burn usually, it felt draggy, the characters started to feel mundane to me since there is little development to them. At this point, Although I find their interaction very cute, I realized can't say that i've really felt there was truly a deep emotional bond/connection between MC and ML. It feels like they're together because the story is written that way, so I just felt myself losing interest in their relationship and the plot. <<less
