T*ash of the Count’s Family

When I opened my eyes, I was inside a novel.

[The Birth of a Hero].

[The Birth of a Hero] was a novel focused on the adventures of the main character, Choi Han, a high school boy who was transported to a different dimension from Earth, along with the birth of the numerous heroes of the continent.

I became a part of that novel as the tr*sh of the Count’s family, the family that oversaw the territory where the first village that Choi Han visits is located.

The problem is that Choi Han becomes twisted after that village, and everyone in it, is destroyed by assassins.

The bigger problem is the fact that this s*upid tr*sh who I’ve become doesn’t know about what happened in the village and messes with Choi Han, only to get beaten to a pulp.

“…This is going to be a headache.”

I feel like something serious has happened to me.

But it was worth trying to make this my new life.

I like it because I like misunderstandings between the MC and the rest of the cast. The MC possesses the body of a novel's super minor character (a tr*shy young noble whose only purpose was to get his face caved in by the protag's fist in the beginning of the story) and does his darndest best for that not to happen. It kinda snowballs from there, and his machinations to live that rich slacker NEET lifestyle in the future usually means doing his part in making sure the protag does... more>> what he's supposed to do, only way smarter and earlier, and more smiles of wickedness. Adventure ensues as he tries to move the story forward while making sure that the spotlight is pointed nowhere near him (he fails, repeatedly). Along the way, he meets and gathers the rest of the cast, and tries to get them to follow his plans for a more peaceful future for most of them (via super firepower)

Edit (by Chapter 335)

Any of you watched Dragonball? During the part where the Z-team is losing to Freeza and everyone is hyping for Goku to wake up already, you know that feels? It's been like that for me since we hit Chapter 280. Hype is REAL!

Spoiler

Cale has long been over the part of the novel he knows, and has been making plans and preparing his team and allies to deal with the future battles. He starts operations against the Empire as it begins a war of conquest clandestine-like. Cale's plans goes to shits as the unexpected happen. The news of Cale's death spreads throughout the continent in later chapters and the story isn't close to being finished!?

Pretty amusing novel with a grumpy MC, interesting plotting and I guess a unique way to get into trouble. (Ch.55)

The main issue I see is that his preknowledge of the "main" plot will soon be used up, maybe ~50-100 chapters. At that point I fear the story will go downhill.

Edit: The current story is still intriguing and well written, the feared deterioration didn't happen, it even improved. (Ch.155)

Good transmigration story.

MC is calm, collected and wants to be lazy, but not lazy to the point of doing nothing : he has a plan for that.

Edit : zero romance, for anyone, anywhere. Too dry for my taste, I'm dropping it.

I LOVE THIS NOVEL SO MUCH! what I love the Most about this novel is the found family aspect and NO HAREM/ROMANCE. This novel focuses on bonds formed through friendship and loyalty. At first the novel stats off as a cookie cutter typical reincarnation story but as the story goes on.... oh boy..... It's totally different from what is shown in the first chapter. So anyone who's wanting to read this please give it a try. I feel like nowadays action/fantasy novels are pretty fast paced. Everything happens too quickly... more>> which makes people get used to it. So, when a novel takes it time into developing its world and character people tend to categorize it as 'boring'. People forget that fact and give novels like this a bad review. Anyways this is by far one of my favourite novels out there. <<less

After reading for a while and comparing to other novels I have read, I'd say this one is considered one of the better ones but if you're into fast-paced actions this is not for you.

If I'd have to compare this to famous anime, I'd say this is closer to One Piece in pacing. Feels slow but continuing the world building.

This is my first time writing a review but I have been thinking of writing it after a while.

I haven't read much web novel yet, only one which is Omniscient Reader Viewpoint, which is really good so it set my standards on webnovels

This webnovels caught my attention two years ago, I think.

... more>> It was a bit slow in the beginning, I wasn't exactly too invested in the story at first but after further reading in to the story, I found myself enjoying it more than I expected.

I loves how the author doesn't hit you with the MC backstory right away. The author smoothly fit it right in the story!

One of the things I noticed about Korean novelist and manhwas writers is that they all really likes to foreshadow their stories

I'm not gonna say about what it is but it's surely in this webnovel

Also, not everyone gonna loves this since the MC can be seen as a 'Pushover'

Though if you read it far enough, you will know that he knows what it feels like and relate to many of the characters. As in ab*se, losing a loved one and more.

If someone who is in a situation like you have in the past, you would know that no one will do anything about it except for you because nobody helped you before.

Spoiler

I also loves how likable most of the characters is! Even Lee Soo Hyuk, who rarely came out at first, became one of my top favourites characters!

The author si really amazing at playing with people emotion... Killing him and reviving his is one way to give me a heart attack

Last but not least, I wasn't expecting the story to go this long but I'm looking forward what this unlucky guy will be doing in the future! <<less

a great, light read. I love the dynamics of the characters. I have actually finished this novel years before, but I only reviewed this now because I forgot about the rating function of NU.

good story, though at times, it can be repetitive. it feels like they're throwing problems just for the sake of the plot, but that's how the story progresses, I guess.

it's funny. you'll fall inlove with the characters. I love cale's sacrificial tendencies and recklessness, and his friends' reactions to it. it gets me everytime.

i have no problems... more>> with the story tbh. aside from the fact that I feel like it could be better...? is it just the translation, or the structure is pretty mediocre? nevertheless, it's a good read and I recommend it to people who like found family dynamics and fantasy. no romance, but the characters connection with each other suffices. <<less

This is one of my favorite novels of all time. It was one of the first webnovels I have ever read, and I enjoyed it a lot. Now, after reading a lot more, I see myself loving even more the way this novel is written. The protagonist is just a guy (... more>>

not really just a guy, but you learn that after reading a lot, so the first impression is important

) that wants to live a peaceful life, but the circumstances don't let him. He can ignore others and their suffering, and that's what I love about him. Cale is someone that doesn't know his worth to others, but at the same time is hyperaware of everything.

I really relate to him in the sense that me to I like to think that I know what is going on around me without taking into amount that other people perceive me different that the way I think of myself. He is also loved, loved by everyone because he is him. Most of the people he meets (not everyone) only know him as Cale, and aren't really acquainted with the original, and that makes everything flow more naturally.

Cale is also very greedy but in a good way. He doesn't want money to have more power, he wants money because if he has money he can protect himself and live a lazy life without worrying. Obviously, his dream of a lazy life is very far away, but even so, he keeps believing on it.

Also, I really do believe that the best thing about this novel is the cast, the found family that Cale has build and everyone that is around him and very clearly loves him. <<less

to be honest, I don't really write reviews.

it's because it's time consuming but the amount of negative reviews I see on this novel is a bit too much. Lol

i even registered an account to post this haha 😅

... more>> anyway, there are some who say that there are a lot of "plot holes" and that the MC is lame and not really good but I think you need to really read it before you can say anything.

i have read the whole first half of this novel (book1) and is now on book 2. The "plot holes" are very small and it makes it up as you go along as this is not a simple transmigration. You'd think he just came from modern Korea and then landed inside the novel? It's not that simple. For example he kept on saying he "worked at a company" before transmigrating..

Spoiler

the company is actually a beast/monster extermination organization post apocalypse and not really a "company" as he says. Its more of a group of people that defends the last remaining humans because they don't have any choice.

[collapse]

anyway, this is a great read. I mean it's not perfect obviously haha this is not a neil gaiman novel and really far from it but it is good as it is. <<less

Cale Henituse is one of the most acceptable smart and rational MC I have come across. I don't complain much about the problems of this novel because it has solid plot progression. I really like the preparation part of the war stuffs. The thing I am missing the most is the resonance of the characters. Multiple pov is missing but we do get a more realistic situational report. Also the action scenes are bland compared to other Korean fantasy novels. But the author is writing knowing what generally can happen... more>> in these fight scenarios and that everybody knows it. I actually feel like reading a war report sometimes. It doesn't have any noticeable annoying things in it. I am hoping when the mysteries are solved the story can become a novel where everything makes sense and gives satisfaction reading it. <<less

This is quite a consistent story but if you're hoping for story with lots of Badass moments, Cool moments and Exciting fights then you'll be very disappointed. This story is more like a simple adventure stably progressing without getting too boring nor too exciting.

It didn't reach peak for me, maybe because I already read the manhwa but mainly because despite the consistent progression of the plot... the humor/jokes, situations and interactions are repetitive and being recycled again and again, the characters keep doing what has been done dozen of... more>> times they keep repeating the dialogue that was used dozens of times that there's nothing new anymore.

There are so much 'potential' especially for the characterization of side characters could've been done better but didn't really reach that 'potential'. The example is the 'Chef/Torturer Beacrox' was the character I'm most interested the most at the beginning but sadly author didn't develop him at all aside from his OCD he doesn't have any personality at all, same with Choi Han (Book's Hero), Lock (Werewolf), Rosalyn (Mage). They were one of the key characters yet very underdeveloped, in fact aside from Cale (MC) and Raon (Dragon) the other characters isn't up to par with the ratings of the novel. Then later on the side characters most of the time they are only there to praise of how great of a person the MC is, their personality isn't being shown nor developed anymore and we only get to see them worshipping and glorifying the MC.

Characters only felt nice at the beginning until at some point author stops investing effort on them, I can say that in this novel the 'characters' isn't really the selling point of the story. The main selling point of the story is our MC Cale and his lazy adventure.

🔸🔸🔸

Those aside, the one that annoys me the most was that the lack vocabulary knowledge of translators. The TLs keeps using the word "Flinch" and "Iffy" a lot, a hell lot of it and it makes the story very tedious to read. Imma drop this for now but might pick this up again ~

❗PS: This may not be a story for binge readers. Read it bit by bit and you might enjoy it more. ❗ <<less

My first advice is being prepared for a long ride. (I overlooked the chapter count before starting, so I was not)

I first started this book a little more than a year ago and stopped at ch216 before picking it up again.

As a consequence, I spent quite a long time rereading parts and the wiki to update myself. (I don't regret it. While rereading, I realized I missed some really unexpected foreshadowing along the way, that were almost unnoticeable, plus I got to go through some of my most favorite... more>> parts again)

But in the finish, this book is genuinely good. Quite long and time-consuming, tho. I tried to speed read it in parallel with normal day activities, and it didn't end well. Plus, I'm a slow reader at the core and am super finicky about the details. Not a good equation.

Thus leading to my second advice, Go at your own pace and don't look up the fandom too much, there's quite a lot of chance of you getting spoiled.

The characters get attaching after a while, I'd say the start is quite slow. I really expected the MC to actually GET his slacker life and was religiously reading, waiting for a spark of the light at the end of the tunnel. Surprise, I got fooled. Or should I say scammed ?

Is it a spoiler? I don't know, I just think it would have been helpful if someone just warned me of what I was getting into.

Every arc that start, already sets the premise of the next (or for 100+ chapters later). It is so that you may feel like you don't have a time to rest and pause. The more, you advance in the book, the more character you discover, the more story you uncover, the more character development you get, the more hooked you get. It's like a never ending spiral, you solve one mystery (arc or plot point) and you realize, you have three more to uncover.

Everything has an explanation, a cause, a reason. You lay feel like there are plot holes at the beginning, but trust me, there are NOT. Just keep reading and you'll understand.

I honestly couldn't understand, for a while, how the events and arcs of the story were so well-structured and there were so many of what I thought were plot holes at the time. Jokes on me, these were all well calibrated and aimed guns (Chekhov's) to hit you when you least expected it.

I think it already has been said multiple times, but the MC is NOT a reliable narrator. I easily get swept by the narrator's viewpoint when I read, and there were quite a few things that I thought odd but got cleared up the more I read.

It's not perfect and require a lot of imagination but:

Also, it is hilarious. It is rich in fantasy lore and facts. Found family tropes everywhere. And interesting backstories. The kids are hella cute (no really, the kids are the best).

Try it, you might like it. <<less

Like many people say, it can be really slow paced, and many times it seems like the author kinda lost interest in a plot point and so it seems rushed or unthought out. But honestly it’s really good. I’d say in general you should really read the manhwa first before the novel because despite this being my favorite web novel it’s definitely easy to loose interest during a boring chapter. The manhwa has great art and is pretty good at following the plot. It gets you interested, then I’d recommend... more>> starting the novel from the start cuz a lot of minor details that help build the plot later either are background details in the manhwa or are left out. It’s really good overall though and a major recommendation! <<less

I already read this story 2 years ago, but this is going to be the first time that I will give my review. I like this story, as I kinda relate to the MC about living a slacker dream and to be rich.

I'm already fond of the MC at the beginning, I like how clever and adaptable he is when it comes to situations. I also appreciate the world building of this story and how the characters are introduced. And, I'm also a sucker for 'found family' troupe.

However, the writer... more>> gives all the details that they didn't give the readers the time to comprehend what happened first. I saw a review here, that this story lacks the 'show, don't tell' method in stories; which I agree.

It gives too much information to the point that you won't be filled with curiousity and interest. Because, you could already guess what's going to happen next. Not all chapters, of course. There are still things in the story, that surprises me and made me in awe.

Overall, it's a good story. Kudos to the writer. <<less

One of my first novels. Oh boy this story was amazing for my inexperienced reader self. Of course it isn’t holding up now I reread it but I will say this is a classic novel. Now here is my review without spoiling this story.

Kim rok soo, a ‘typical’ (not at all) Korean who reads a book and ends up in the body of the minor supporting villain of Cale. From this point on he strives not to end up with the same fate that poor old Cale suffered in the... more>> original story ‘The birth of a hero’ with its main character of Choi Han. Just some basic level entry information for most people.

Now where the true outlier in why this story is so exceptional is the adventure the characters go through.

Spoiler

From befriending dragons (a sh*t ton of dragons from raon to the golden one who name is something like eruhab something) to befriending both elves and dark elves to having an obsessive worshipper to maintain good relations with vampires to eventually defeating the mastermind behind arm

I started reading this like 4 times and always dropped it, because the beginning was confusing and a bit boring. Only once I moved past the first 20-something chapters I started to actually like it and now it's my favourite novel. It is far from the best written novel I've read so far (good translations). For the first 100 (or so) chapters the characters have little depth and growth and the world building is a bit superficial. But the more I read the more the author starts to play with... more>> the general clichés of the webnovel fantasy genre.

Now after more than 300 chapters I just love the humour, the characters and the very unique story. <<less

This review will ONLY BE USED PART 1 (776 chaps + Side) as the basis for the review!

-

Story ★★★ - This 3★ refers to the end of Part 1, even though the author did it in an even "organic" way to start Part 2, was it necessary? Depending on how you read about the information to start the wold-building for the second part, it's a waste of time and could even have been "abrupt", the walk to start the part of Hunters and etc... It was great, and it... more>> could having moved the effort to another part that I actually found wanting, which are the characters.

-

Character ★★★ - You who happen to be reading this review and are a fanboy and such, man all the characters are charismatic, no problem so far... BUT! Why this lack of character development? Can you count on your fingers the characters that actually have this, and there are certain moments like @brandonj4564 himself pointed out in his review, that really needed it? In terms of "power development" several have this development, but... Character? Not even the MC himself has the same, you can even use a valid argument that he is already "old" and something like that would hardly happen, but after 700 few chapters and nothing in this matter goes forward, it's boring.

-

Enjoyment ★★★★ - The walk was really great, from the moment of stealing from others to taking it to passing others behind in several possible ways, the characters are not "dumb" on purpose to show how smart the MC is, the fights are good, but it ends up hitting at one point he gives a review about the Character that would be "Sacrifice", which I will refrain from commenting XD.

-

General ★★★☆ - 7/10, my score would be 6/10 if the world-building for PART 2 was too "abrupt" as something similar happened at the end of Second Life Ranker, BUT, as there was some development, however much I think it was unnecessary, it was "acceptable " at most, what really could have been much better would be the character development, that in my humble opinion left A LOT to be desired.

-

If you read this review thank you very much and may God bless you! <<less
