This novel is epic, a masterpiece in all senses and that's exactly why I can't read it anymore 😅

It's MC's mission to kill the people he has to kill, and though I was completely aware of it in the beginning, the brutality of reality still crushed in the end.

It turns out that's too much for me, the author is an amazing writer and all of the deads in this novel hurted me deeply.

I don't think that MC is cruel, in fact he might be the most determined and strong protagonist... more>> that I've ever seen. If I was on his shoes, I definitely wouldn't be able to complete such task.

Maybe I just get attached too easily to the characters 😅 nevertheless the writing is deep and the translator (s) did an amazing job, absolutely must read at least once. <<less

Five stars though I'm just two and a half arcs in, just on the strength of the first arc alone, which long enough to be a standalone story, and absolutely tremendous. Very well written, with plenty of unexpected twists and turns, and my sympathy constantly shifting from one character to the other. It reads like pure tragedy, not the sort that tries to make you sad and cry, it's not weepy melodrama, more like a grand bleak story with larger than life characters all fated for doom.

This is QT of... more>> sorts, as the MC moves through endless reincarnation cycles as punishment, and the only way to escape each world is to get the ML to fall in love with him and then kill the ML. Tragedy guaranteed. But it somehow magically stays free of melodrama due to the character of the MC, he's your cold and aloof type, very world weary, but much more interestingly, he is hiding some real rage and revulsion underneath, he seems to find love and his love targets pretty disgusting and pathetic.

He's also quite mysterious, we see his actions but often his thought process is hidden, so I often ended up wondering why he did some things, as they didn't seem to help towards his goal at all, at least not at first glance. He's such a passive character too, he does so little, and I'm never very sure if he has any control of the story, which oddly makes him even more interesting. I can't tell if he's a master manipulator, or he's just trying to survive the situation he's in.

Apart from the MC we get two more, almost always equally prominent characters, who I guess are the ML, often equally as cold and aloof as the MC, and the yandere psycho villain, but their roles often switch, and who is good or evil and who loves whom changes all the time.

Spoiler

My guess would be that one represents the original villain, that tried to force the MC back in his original world and is the reason for the MC's predicament, while the other is some sort of ML love interest from the original world? Good luck to you ML, your MC does not seem one for romance

[collapse]

After the excellent first arc, the second was a bit of a let down, as rather too similar to the first arc and a bit more formulaic.

Spoiler

Both are in a similar pseudohistorical setting, and while in the first arc the MC is a simple and fairly ugly servant, which makes his task to get the emperor to love him all the more challenging, now he's an impossibly beautiful omega-type creature, which is a lot more boring. He also is way too passive in this arc, to the point that he becomes almost a secondary character, and the villain takes centre stage and becomes the most sympathetic one

[collapse]

The third arc is interesting enough up to now, I'm not loving the set up, but I can't predict how the plot will develop which is a good sign. Obviously there's a long way to go to the final arc, and all the original ideas might lead to a cliche conclusion, but at this point this gets a thumbs up for suspense, originality, and some fascinating characters. <<less

Reading this, you will hate the ML and the secondary ML to the core, then feel bad for them and may even grow attached. Rinse and repeat. You may even feel that the MC is cold at times, and forget how much trauma he went through and how badly those MLs treated him in their past lives.

Actually, the truly horrendous one is the secondary ML, who is usually either a crazy rapist or harlot, while main ML is self centred and reticent, at least at the start. I have... more>> to say though, I have mixed feelings about the secondary ML. He's absolutely abhorrent but there are a few instances when he isn't always a psycho where I felt he had more chemistry with the MC. Or at least, it was funny to see MC's interactions with him in those weird peace-filled moments... before the sh*t happens.

Spoiler

In the first realm when 2nd ML reincarnates and you see the good person he would have become if he weren't twisted by events. Also, in the second realm when he acts completely ooc in the ML's body. And in the apocalypse realm when MC started this weird domestic life with the MLs.

[collapse]

I still hate him most of the time though, but I find him entertaining as a character.

Regarding the ML, when he is in power, he keeps people at a length cause he is used to them approaching him all the time, and when he is weak, he does whatever he can to fulfil his aspirations. Thus he is a person who is hard to get close to, yet when he truly loves he does everything for the MC. And in every story's previous lifetime where he ends up with the 2nd ML, compared to the tragic ending with MC, I can't help but feel like they are starcrossed lovers in a true ending which is sadly never a happy ending.

And regarding the MC... whenever you feel that he is cold, just remember he has been living through hell for a thousand years, including the very fresh hell he just went through. And also, there were two parts where what happened in the realm affected him. I don't cry easily yet I teared up. My heart still feels broken.

Spoiler

The apocalypse ending where both MLs died in ways which shocked him. And it felt that he didn't want ML to die for once despite the harsh reality.

And the ML as top scholar realm right after that where he reincarnates again and loses all hope, giving up on the realm completely, and hating what he became and what he has to go through and feeling like he has no one who cares for him. And later on, when the ML comes for him...

[collapse]

Sometimes I hope that he could live happily in the realm with the ML, then I realise the moment he dies of old age or an accident, he will be forced to go to another realm where the ML will not remember him and will contribute to his death again.

Characterizations are really well done. There's backstories to why the MLs are cruel, violent, cold or sick. And I particularly love the psychological breakdown of the characters by the MC, making them go from apathy or hate, to selfish affection and finally, selfless or obsessive love. Each change is vindictive to read, yet tragic and bittersweet when you know how it all will end.

This is a story about the ugly sides of 'love'. How it can distort a person. How it is obsessive and possessive and driven by narcissism, only to plummet and give in wholeheartedly even if the outcome is despair. <<less

Would not recommand. The MC is enjoyable to my tastes meanwhile the ML is absolutely piece of sh*t that force himself again and again on the MC. Overall the story wasn’t that bad but more boring and plain.

In the beginning its very exciting but when the MC return to his original world, it started to become cliche like other same genre novel. I really dislike the helplessness of the MC throughout the novel. He seems strong at one moment then relies on other people the other. The ending really lumped everything together and just serve the conclusion.

This is quite a heavy read compared to other BL QT. The backstory of MC is heart breaking. Every arc will make you have a mixed feeling about the ending but the premise of each arc is interesting. I can't say much about the ML, he's not on my list of fav ML. Momo on the other hand is cutee. About the ending, it's supposed to be satisfying but I just feel bad for both the MC and villain.

In this novel, each character is a morally grey person. The person... more>> you're supposed to like, you can't help but feel disappointed; the person you're supposed to hate, you ended up feeling bad for them. This made us easily sympathize with MC and the author's writing really pulls you into the story. <<less

For now, I dropped it. I didn't even finish the second arc. Gave the first arc a try and feel things out, continued on to second arc with my gut at the knife's end and still I cannot stomach it. My thoughts were turning gray and I simply think the novel is to ab*se the readers. I was not up for it yet. MC was apathetic, inspite his descriptive anger for revenge in a past he continously experienced. To me, with his memories intact at the present, he just doesn't... more>> give the feeling of being a sad, angry and revengeful soul exacting that plus the fact it's to end his endless reincarnation. I don't feel that emotions, except for the first lengthy paragraph that describe it in every arc, overall he's blank and very robotic that his only concern is to break free with no feelings attached. That did not connect well with me, so I had to stop for now. I'll be back when I'm down being a masochist. <<less

Interesting so far. Honestly so far the worlds are interesting and unique in their own ways and..

Spoiler

I do hope that the multiple MLs are one person? Cause the second lead? For the second arc the one that uses the whip grew on me. I hope they are the same person if not it would be sad TT

[collapse]

Also the MC is quite a ruthless person but I mean I can understand his actions. Please do update more! Looking forward to more updates

The life that MC leads in every lifetime left me in despair, I questioned why he din't just kill himself and end his misery. Shouldn't it be easier to let go than hanging on to life that only breaks you every turn? Then I realized killing oneself is against the human survival instinct, which is so primal and dominant in us.

MC goes through hell and back to take his revenge but that revenge instead of satisfying me left me in more despair. My emotions when reading this book are so... more>> intense that Im scared to continue the read. I feel bad for the MLs so much that I have to keep reminding myself the torture and humiliation the MC went through to get us here.

Theme is to make ML love you and kill him. I thought it is going to be romantic but it is anything but that. <<less
