BL
“I wasn’t born a lucky person, I’m just too strong.”

On his way home late in the evening, Xiao Li found a letter asking for help and inexplicably came to an unknown place. He had to finish the task given before he could succeed in returning to reality. In the legendary haunted school, Xiao Li looked at his companions’ task of ‘survive until dawn’ and then looked at the tasks displayed in his book:

Tell me your name.

Tell me what you like.

Kiss me.

Xiao Li: ????

He was very confused and then refused.

For me, at first I judged that this novel wasn't that scary when I was reading it. It has an OP MC with an OP ML, cute and funny interactions with the ghosts. But I truly realized how scary and how big of an effect it has on me when I got nightmares for a couple nights in a row while reading it, with one time where I ended up waking up screaming cause something fell in my room and I single-mindedly believed it was a ghost who did it.

At... more>> the first few parts of the story, the MC's luck is so high that you'd think the title is born contradictorily, but as you go on, it's not as evident.

Overall, I love this novel and the translator also did a really good job. As I've said, this is my opinion, if you don't find it good, IDC, to each their own. <<less

It's a funny comedy-horror with a MC that tortures ghosts (when they try to scare him haha). ML is possessive and can be creepy but it's all in his mind and urges. He completely and utterly respects MC and is very very scared of doing something that will scare MC or push him away.

MC only starts being interesting around 50 (?) chapters in, a few arcs in at least. Its only then that he really starts to show how he clears instances without any of ML's help and starts tormenting... more>> all sorts of ghosts. He's incredibly smart and calm, being able to find out the real truth of each instance.

MC's resistance to ML starts getting annoying tho, especially since they only get together (when MC finally accepts him) 200+ chapters in. ML is also basically a furniture for most of the novel, but at least he's around? Hahahahaha <<less

‘I wasn’t born lucky’- what a lie lmao. If any side characters try to pull the stuff that MC does in this novel they’d be 100% dead

I swear I was there for the ghosts the MC had rather than the MC himself bc frankly he was a boring MC to follow. The ghosts at least have something while the MC just??? Goes around and does ‘dAnGErouS’ things that aren’t really dangerous bc he’s lucky that he’s the MC lol.

I get that it’s supposed to be funny and charming or whatever... more>> but it’s really not. It was alright for the first few arcs but got boring fast after you start to realize how if anyone else tried this they’d be dead and how strong the MCs plot armor was. Killing all tension and making every scene just ‘I wonder what DaNGerOus stunts MCs going to pull to impress npcs who will fawn over him’.

the ML is also a creep who crosses off my pet peeve of obsessive, stalkery and annoying ML. He’s just creepy lol <<less

Disclaimer about the translations that will not impact the ratings but has to be said for reader experience;

Spoiler

The translation team refuses to correct the mistakes even when it's been point out by readers (comments pointing out mistakes dates even back to 1yr+). Some of those mistakes interferes with reading experience and it's disappointing to see that they don't care. Especially if you consider there's about 7+ mistakes minimum per chapter. Y'know, at least fix the big ones...

It since has improved a lot over 100chapters down to only a couple.

[collapse]

This, at least for the first 100chapters, is definitely no romance novel. Heck, ML hardly even shows up for the 100chapters and when he does, he's being a creep.

Completely relate to negative comments about ML being a creeper and coming on too strong, which he does.

ML is the stereotypical big wig, the crème de la crème, always there ready to spoil MC. *yawn* No individuality, really. All he's got is obsession for MC and disinterest in the whole world except for MC.

ML is pretentiously keeping the front of a respectful gentleman for MC when he's awake, he would make wild suggestions but still ask if it's okay but goes ahead and does it anyways when MC falls asleep. (What's wrong with you all loving this, srsly??! The main characters just lacks depth all around)

So for ML alone, the story already deserves no more than 2 stars. His behaviour at least for the last 133chapters have not changed for the better.

MC shows no interest yet ML feverishly pursues without shame. Sexually harassing MC 24/7 when he's trying to do his thing or just trying to be at peace. ML gives him basically 3 options; 1. Love him. 2. Love him more. 3. Love him the most. Wouldn't take no for an answer and would eradicate all chances of having rivals. (Warned MC not to love anybody, gives the scare of their lives if they become too physically intimate with MC)

Author definitely has to be a newbie at attempting themes like puzzle solving because they're coldly singling out the readers on all events. Both readers and side characters clueless to what's going on in the instances while MC is solving everything on his own. The disconnection keeps reoccurring. Horror level is a meh, you can read it just fine in the dark kind of spooky, comedy or no comedy.

Spoiler

Idk why author chose to make MC go Mr. International when all they did was bringing in foreign participants but everything is strictly bound to national stereotypes; chinese NPCs, location and language.

There has even been mistakes of foreigner handing out chinese talismans (translation specific it was a "stack of exorcism paper". Those who are more invested into horror probably know that westerners use more trinkets and blessed items (or directly holy water) than exorcism papers. Weirdly, there has been an exorcist in the first global instance that used holy water, so IDK what prompts author to have a set up with a black dude equipped with "exorcism papers" and not either shaman doctor trinkets or holy water...

Also, author did mention translations for the foreign participants here and there, but seem to neglect that aspect later on and the point of having foreign participants just felt like extra decoration.

Since the entire story evolves more or less only about instances and horror with a kick of comedy, having a global setting yet restricting it only to national spec is nonsensical. They wouldn't even bring you to the other side of the northern hemisphere... lest to say a tropical setting or desert area in the southern hemisphere.... Author has briefly mentioned that one of the passer-by participants had experienced a jungle setting so don't tell me they didn't know. And that was even way before global instances opened up.

All in all, it just falls under what MC is most comfortable with.

Most importantly, the MC lacks character development and the real life is also being heavily disregarded. There was a weird build up in his family relationship but he smoothly exits it without an issue. MC seems fearless of entities and his general characteristics other than withdrawn is lukewarm gentleness towards the ghosts he's keeping.

There's ofc this bs mentality of throwing in mental illnesses that aren't actually mental illnesses into the set up to idk, evoke sympathy for MC?? The socially withdrawn bit, I can get behind, but to bring up occasionally that he's a germaphobe or got OCD is... *sigh* I wish authors could stop doing that. Everybody would wash their hands if it's full of blood and dirt, okay?

[collapse]

The entities and their interactions with MC is probably so far the only saving grace. The comedic part brings a smile to your face and a small chuckle from time to time.

Praying for the rest of the problem to solve itself as the story progresses.

This was a very creative novel. Each instance is solved a bit magically in my opinion, but they're so rich and interesting to read that I don't really mind as much as I usually would.

I love how all the characters and ghosts come together in the end to defend reality - it really ties everything together (though like the solution to the instances, it was resolved a bit too easily based merely on how awesome Sherlock is). The one thing the novel never resolved, which I really wish it would,... more>> is the relationship between Sherlock and his father. I really feel the father could have had a bit of a redemption arc, but that never happened. I also felt a bit sad for the step brother who wanted to get closer to Sherlock, but was always repelled until he could only become' a black fan.

I don't particularly like the relationship between Sherlock and the other main character in this book - it's very obsessive and doesn't seem healthy. However, comments on the translation site made a really good point about how some people have different need in a relationship. If both parties know about and agree to the unhealthy parts of their relationship, it's not really unhealthy for them. A mutually consented kink is safe, a one-sided kink can often be a crime. Also, I personally thought it was badass how Sherlock didn't really need his partner to save the day. He's like a cat - independent and prickly. Maybe that's why he loves them so much. I really hated Sherlock's apathy in the beginning, but I came around to him by the end. He's just apathetic because he's afraid to invest too much of himself into anything, because doing that leaves him open to getting hurt or disappointed. He must also have a very thrill-seeking personality, where it takes a lot to get him excited.

In the end, this was a sweet story about an apathetic thrill-seeker who ends up finding the perfect, obsessive mate he can feel safe opening himself up to. There are definitely plot holes and imperfections in the story and the translation, but it was a great piece of entertainment. <<less

I hate to pile on the bad reviews but the novel really did not spark joy. The ML is indeed a total creep with his constant s*xual remarks that should never be considered harmless especially when he has the ability to mol*st MC on his dreams. If that isn't deterring enough, the overall story... sucks. There was never a danger for the MC and the way the he solves the challenges in his way is obviously a symptom of lazy writing. No real logic in problem-solving, no understandable romance between... more>> the two, just some f*cked up yearning that I'm pretty sure has some lame backstory that would be revealed in the later chapters which I would not bother myself finding out for the sake of preserving my self-respect. <<less

The novel is reaaally good. The MC is so strong and he practically outshines everyone. While the ML is too flirty and they really make a good couple. Although I have complaints like the MC solves the mysteries way too easily as if its he is the God of Mystery, I couldnt really get how he did it with thiny bit of clues and I couldnt find how to connect the clues to the truth. Somehow I feel that the explanation to each truth is somehow lacking a bit. But... more>> nevermind that since I really look forward to his ghost companions. I was really scared especially if I read this at night but somehow when the MC makes contact with the instance ghost and his ghost 'friends' I really laugh hard that I disregard the plot and look forward to his ghostly interactions. All in all its is REAALLY GOOD, I regret that I really disregarded this because of the previous reviews. You lot should try it, its quite interesting. <<less

An exhilarating read. An OP protagonist, obsessive ML, and a cute romance. The MC is pretty messed up, he has unrealistic views on relationships and treats everyone like shit. The ML is like a dog, he does everything for the MC and the MC is literally his only reason for living. But they make an adorable couple once they get together, but I wish we got more dog food scenes. The MC's multiple identities are pretty funny, but the misunderstanding get cleared up quickly. I really like the MC's whole... more>> ghost collection since all of them have their own personalities and their interactions are hilarious, my personal favorite was the pen fairy. The ending was really... cool, albeit a little confusing. I can't think of words to describe it, but it's kind of like the ending of The Earth is Online, Global Entrance Exam, or Solo Leveling. It got kind of boring in the middle, but PULL THROUGH. It's worth it. There are some plot holes, uncompleted parts, and things that don't make any sense, but nevertheless, it's a good read. <<less

I'll say it now that many of the low reviews either call the main character boring or that the romance is nonexistent and to each their own I guess but I truly love this novel! I did not just read this for the BL but mostly for the survival instance storyline and if you're like me and love these types of Horror/survival stories that play kind of like a game instance then you'll love this. The main character may appear boring to some but its mostly because he's just indifferent... more>> and people even complain that he acts in ways that may get other people killed. But this is why he's unique and different. I love this novel so much and I went back and reread from the beginning again while I wait for the last few chapters to be translated because that's just how good it is. The instances are so interesting and each one just makes my mind keep thinking about the truth behind everything.

It's just great so like I said it you're like me and just adore stories like these with a game instance and Horror/survival storyline to it then go ahead and read it. <<less

I love, love, love this story!!

I like how he is so darn unconventional with the ghosts. Sure anyone with a normal self-preservation can never imagine approaching problems like this- but his puzzle solving excitement I suppose trumps a lot of that. He is really a lot like Sherlock in that way- sucky in social interactions, inexplicable in his hunting and weird in his explanations and ultimately comes out as a genius.

The others are not inferior to him, really I am sure they are competent in their own rights- it's just... more>> I think they fall to a bit of fan worship every time- whether they know or not. I don't grudge them that- if I were ever to meet Sherlock- I will hanger on to his every word and every action too!

The ghosts are interesting! And I like how he turns totally inescapable ways to his benefit.

I will deduct 0.01 points though- for the fact that no one really got mad and attack instead of... well, I suppose ghosts are set in their ways and any deviation is gonna trip them up.

Besides MC-poo has his own support group.

About the romance thing- I like it. I know people find it stagnant.

But 1. It is not the focus, not really.

2. And I think the ML was scared of rejection- which was easier to take as a inanimate object rather than a person.

They were both shy in their interactions... even it did not seem like that first. But it was cute! <<less

Inoffensive, but boring. There's nothing making me hate the novel, like say the characters being s*upid or the plot being illogical, but it's just really boring.

I really love the little ghosts that the MC has interacted with so far though, so I might end up reading it all the way just to see more of them.

I went into this purely for the comedy, and I got what I wanted! I loved the way the MC handled the "horror" aspects of the story, and as someone who easily gets scared from the horror genre, it was a very nice read! There are some aspects of the ML that are creepy and obsessive, but I think it's handled well alongside the MC. Sure, there are times when the MC may seem "bland", but I simply interpreted it as the MC being emotionally constipated (which actually helps the... more>> comedy aspect). The ending is great, and I enjoyed this read <<less

You should definitely give this a try.

The MC is just awesome, collecting ghosts. The humourous plots made me laugh so much. One my favourites. Just that the ending kind of felt abrupt to me. But the rest makes me Ignore this abruptness.

I stopped reading this several years ago because I was waiting for more chapters to be translated. I had almost forgotten it until recently, so I checked and found that the translator had completed it a while ago.

I remember that before I had been hesitant about finishing reading it because other reviewers said that the ML was a creep who wouldn't take no for an answer when the MC rejected him on many occasions.

I guess this just shows the limitations of how well a reader can judge a character if... more>> you don't read the entire novel. Not to mention, I think it's a logical fallacy to judge the ML by ordinary standards.

  • The ML is not human, and the MC was aware he wasn't human for the entire story. The ML is not only inhuman, but also
    Spoiler

    a god

    [collapse]
, so it's quite normal for his emotions and treatment of a human in a romantic relationship to not abide by ordinary human relationship standards. Judging the ML's character based on human ethics is illogical.
  • The ML never engaged in r*pe or serious dub con. The most he resorted to was a furtive kiss, or "locking up in a little dark room" which was during a dream, and nothing actually happened except the ML watched the MC as he was asleep. That might seem creepy at first, but once you read the whole novel, it doesn't seem that way anymore.
  • The MC craved a type of relationship in which he was loved to the point of adoration, with zero possibility of abandonment. The reason he rejected the ML for a long time was a) the ML appeared in nonhuman form so he was confused how to respond, b) the ML was unreasonable and seemed to have emotional issues, c) the MC was extremely afraid of abandonment due to problems in his childhood with his family. Not to mention, the MC was a very dense person when it comes to emotions, and found it difficult to form or maintain friendships. Maybe that was because his family members had either abandoned (he saw his mother's death as a kind of abandonment, which is normal for people who struggle with grief), manipulated (his dad was controlling/manipulative), or even sought to harm him (his step-mom was outright malicious). Regardless of the reason, the MC was extremely cautious about falling in love, not because he disliked or hated the ML at any point, but because refusal was his self-protection mechanism.
  • The ML lived a completely desolate life without any real positive social interaction until he met the MC, so it's natural for him to have a twisted and clingy mentality since the MC was literally his only light in a life of utter darkness. The fact that he wants to exert control over the MC but knows that would harm him, and chooses to not force the MC to do things he doesn't like, seems to show to me that the ML is actually a very decent guy. Especially if you compare this kind of ML who wants to control the MC but never dares to, to other s*umbag MLs in countless BL stories who never hesitate to r*pe or force their romantic partners just because they have domineering personalities.
I guess if you want to describe the ML, rather than "creepy voyeur", it would be better to say he's "lonely and craving social interactions with innocent and kind humans"... you should watch the Hollywood film City of Angels (the German film Wings of Desire from 1987, has a similar style but much better quality) in order to get that vibe. That's a famous film, where the main character angel can be considered to be a voyeur if you look at him in a negative light, because he loves to watch humans, and desires to have interactions with humans.

I really liked the comedic aspects of this novel. Most supernatural/ghost stories tend to have a heavy, dark atmosphere, where countless characters die or suffer mind-numbing violence. Instead, the author chose to use irreverent humor to lighten what could otherwise become quite depressing. I feel like the skill required to create truly funny stories is a quality that critics and readers don't appreciate enough. I mean, I know of a few novels which tried desperately to have humorous anecdotes or have characters appear witty, but the result was quite disastrous. <<less

The story is captivating! Although the romance develops slowly, which sometimes tests my patience, it's not a major issue. The main focus of the story is the plot, which is quite refreshing to read.

The main character (MC) is intelligent and overpowered (OP). I'm really fond of his straightforward and humorous personality. The male lead (ML) is also commendable. I've noticed some reviewers criticizing the ML's creepy demeanor, but in my opinion, it's not the worst. I've read many BL stories where the ML has a far more disagreeable personality or... more>> character. For me, his quite a green flag. Yes, the ML can be creepy and cringeworthy at times, and he does certain things to the MC in his dreams, but he never forces the MC. He knows his boundaries and limits, and shows gentleness towards the MC in his human form. Although he can be quite a pe*vert in his 'yellow book' form, I find it acceptable and justifiable. He mentioned that only in his 'yellow book' form can he fully or openly express his feelings towards the MC because he's trying his best to restrain himself in his human form because he doesn't want the MC to dislike him or to stay away from him. Overall, I appreciate his character.

The side characters are not like the typical cliches in Chinese stories where there's really one person who retaliates or harbors hatred towards the MC despite being strangers. They don't do irrational things to harm the MC. Instead, they're nice and their actions are very realistic, reflecting how a person should behave when encountering something or someone new. <<less

An endless flow of really detailed and interesting world-building.

That's my definition of this novel.

The worlds are well crafted, with unexpected details that catch your eye. Some of them have their own rules that make everything more attractive, allowing you to immerse yourself in the reading and easily feel in the mood of some instances. Which, for me, is a great point, since I can hardly ever feel this vibe of terror and mystery in a very obvious way. It always comes through with little intensity for me, which is why... more>> I appreciate it more.

Xiao Li, the MC, is an intelligent person with strange directions of thought, who will leave you surprised at times and unable to figure out what his next action might be. In addition, of course, to being the ultimate boss when it comes to nicknames. There were so many! And the most interesting thing is that I didn't feel lost or confused by any of them! I can remember each one very well without confusing things.

Now the ML – which I honestly can't remember the name of – it's quite... transparent? Like, I got to the point where I thought EVERY guy was ML, EXCEPT the real ML! Just because he didn't give me that vibe. But I'm not going to blame him, after all, it was this dear author who went too deep into the mysteries, terror, the plot of the instances and simply forgot most of the rest. I say most of it because there were times when the rest also seemed to be developing, but it was very shallow and then seemed to be forgotten, so...

Well, even with all that, it's a good read for those who like the genre and don't care so much about romance and couple development.

You'll definitely like it if you come for plot, terror and mystery! <<less

I enjoyed it-- arguments about the MC and ML are interesting to me as they tend to focus on the fact that the ML keeps insisting on romance when the MC shows complete disinterest. Irl that would be stalker behavior, but also irl there's no supernatural yellow book that your stalker has access to to be able to bug you with how much they want to hug and kiss you while you're trying to figure out how to survive the horror story you are currently in.

Spoiler under the cut on... more>> why the MC is showing disinterest:

Spoiler

From the MC on why he's not interested in being in a relationship: "He wanted blatant preferences, he wanted a hug so tight that there were no gaps, he wanted a madness that would make the person run through half the city just for him. Even if he fell into the abyss, there must be someone willing to accompany him and be covered with mud."

He wasn't going to be in a relationship because he couldn't be sure that the other wouldn't leave. If there's no way to be 100% sure, no point in starting the relationship.

[collapse]

On the story itself: very fun, I really like every instance. I like the ghosts and the ways that the stories get resolved, the reactions to MC and every name he goes by, and the characters he collects around him are funny to read about. <<less

It takes about 20 to 30 chapters to really get hooked.

The ML is creepy and sets off all sorts of red flags but there is a reason for his behavior and it's too spoilery to mention but it boils down to him not understanding what love is and having to be taught like a child what is and is not acceptable. He still has his jealousy/possessive side but it is controlled.

It takes until the end of the story for them to finally get together but they both needed that time... more>> to grow and understand each other.

It is a lovely, funny, and heart warming story. Best of all your faves don't meet bad ends.

First of all, I think it actually depends with the person's taste if they will enjoy and like this novel.

It wasn't in any way perfect, but it's so worth it. This past few days, I had a hard time finishing most stories that I'm reading. I got bored easily bcs of similar plots and predictable responses of the characters. To be honest, this wasn't the first story that I have read where the MC ab*ses ghost and solve instances in an illogical way. There's "The Earth is Online" and "Global... more>> Examination" as example. And just like those stories, this one made me binge-read for three days. I love it to the point that I know it will be hard to part again with this story. It is the type where you'll feel it's enough, but not at the same time.

Regarding the characters...

Spoiler

The character development of MC was really obvious. He was like a loner at first. Acts alone and keeps his thoughts inside. After meeting one classmate who knows him in reality, an enemy he solved two instances together with, gradually he starts to participate to the group as a team. He shares his thoughts and speculations. Afterwards, he also started leading the others. His emotions became more open. Sometimes he actually looks cute. His emotional struggle with the ML wasn't annoying also. It was like everything just comes naturally for them when it's time.

ML was a bit yandere, possessive, and obsessive, however it was just thoughts. Although I was kind of irked about the tying up MC in the dream without consent, but it was just like two or three times. In the later chapters, he became more restrained with his dirty thoughts and cherishes MC more than himself. He respects and loves the MC too much to hurt him and take away his freedom. He was one of the best ML that I encountered where it feels that they're both equal despite the differences in status. He was supportive and ready to help the MC in anyway possible. Keeping him from harm but also letting him grow on his own. He doesn't intervene to MC's instances but most of the time, he keeps MC safe in and out of the instances (like in the orphanage instance), support him emotionally, and ready to sacrifice for him in any way possible.

Side characters are a bit bland at first. They were like foils to make MC look "great" and "OP", however in the later chapter, although some of them rely on him, they actually do their part. Ye Zeqing for example uses his talent to perceive the emotions of the ghost or sense them. Wang Huai was a leader like person who do his part in protecting his team. And other characters who also speculates and tries to solve the problem.

I also love the ghosts the MC "collected". They were all more or less tsundere. They have a grudge to MC for "abusing" them but also there ready to help him anytime. Also, they love tricking other ghosts into falling into the pit the MC prepared lmao. All of them were actually so cute.

[collapse]

The plot...

Spoiler

As some reviews said, the instances in the early chapters might seem cringe, however as the instances progresses and became harder, it also became more enjoyable. Sometimes, you'll just be like "how?" and "so that's how it is". The MC was both smart and clever. For example, the trick in the rules of the Lingshi Mountain arc, the Scary Stories arc, the Styland arc, the train arc, and many other instances in the later chapters.

[collapse]

Overall the story was fun and enjoyable. Although I have a hard time finishing stories nowadays, I actually finished this one including the extras. <<less

yes there are problems and flaws plotwise and also romance wise (but this I dont really see as much as a problem. In fact if you ignore how they met and a bit of the ml's yandere ish tendencies, their love is actually pretty sweet with how MC gradually comes to fall in love with ml)

but the whole read itself was entertaining and I enjoyed reading it??

also want to mention that though most positive reviews mentioned that theres comedy, for me its only in the middle chapters that there were some funny parts. Not a lot though, but its definitely funny that it will make you laugh <<less
