Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint

Kim Dokja does not consider himself the protagonist of his own life. Befitting the name his parents gave him, he is a solitary person whose sole hobby is reading web novels. For over a decade, he has lived vicariously through Yu Junghyeok, the main character of the web novel Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse (TWSA).

Through Junghyeok, Dokja has experienced secondhand the trials of repeatedly regressing in time, in search of an end to life-threatening “scenarios” that force people to act out narratives for the amusement of god-like “Constellations.”

After reading 3,149 chapters—long after all other readers lost interest—Dokja finally resigns himself to the story ending. However, he receives an enigmatic message from the author, stating that the story will soon be monetized, before his surroundings suddenly go dark.

He swiftly realizes that fiction has become reality and he is now living through TWSA. Although he is the singular omniscient reader of the events yet to come, his success in the scenarios is not guaranteed—but perhaps his advantage will empower him to step into the protagonist role that never suited him before.

Author seems to have mastered ass pull justu. The MC knows everything and pulls out he exact stuff to clear the scenario. Author tried to give out more depth to side characters but they read the same. They are the usual template characters. The big bear like naive guy, justice obsessed girl, the beauty, the girl with sword.

It's a beautiful story

I cried nearing the end, and cried even more during the extra stories

everything intertwines beautifully and the character's relationships are very deep.

Kim dokja was everyone's saviour, but he too was saved by everyone

I really want to read about what happens after the last epilogue

I also want to reread the story to pick out the details I love

but I probably will start crying if I read it again so I will wait.

one of the parts I loved:

Spoiler

was that hades and persephone did everything they could to protect him, even at the cost of hades' death. Even though they didn't know each other for that long, their support for dokja was so much.

hades even had a secret stash of coins hidden from persephone to donate to his boy.

he even donated his entire stash oh my god that part was so cute but now it makes me cry

pros

  • super cool set up and beginning
  • plot doesn't slow down, entertaining throughout
  • pretty good humour
  • solid fanbase
eh

  • MC KEEPS FREAKING SACRIFICING HIMSELF
  • a lot of shonen vibes later on (personally didn't really like this ;-;)
cons

  • I get that the point is to find "alternate solutions" to scenarios but some of them later on don't really make sense anymore (more plot armour...)
  • mc's treatment of his group...*
ok so this is probably an unpopular opinion but uhhhh sadly I didn't like this as much as I feel like I should have. I'm still giving this series a 4 though, mainly because I feel like my review of ORV was really biased compared to others, since I read this at the same time I was reading lord of the mysteries and rereading tr*sh of the counts family (too high standards rip). *because of this though (and I apologize in advance), I really couldn't help noticing the differences in attention that cale and dokja gives to their team. ig I just really wished that dokja would genuinely trust and reward his allies
Spoiler

esp Persephone and hades THEY DID SO MUCH

The power system is pretty unique, at least among the things that I've read. Most of it is pretty entertaining, personally I'm not a huge fan of the amount of plot armor though. The biggest issue for me is the paradoxes and things that just don't make sense. If you can get past that kind of thing then I'd say go for it, you'll probably really like it

I cant explain this in words that everyone will understand so I will say this, in my opinion I think the story was really well thought out and it even pulled some of my heart strings as I have cried a number of times to this novel throughout the process of reading it and even many months after I have finish reading it (Im a big crybaby tho so idk if it really means anything but the feels are real with this one). I don't think this novel is for... more>> everyone so If you really want to make sure id say read up till chapter 50 to determine if this novel is for you.

This novel really was what got me into Korean web novels so id say its my favourite. I have never found anything that has made my cry as many times as this story did. I really hope you give this story some love because it really deserves it. Its a master piece and no one can change my mind until otherwise proven wrong. <<less

It's my first time doing a review here, but this story is just so good that I had to do one.

So here it goes.

This is absolutely a very wonderful read. It's lengthy but it doesn't feel dragged and it really makes you jump on your toes because the plot is so wonderfully made. The characters are superb and crafted so well.

The ending is well...a good ending for this story. There's really no other ending that could fit in well with this although I might have found it rather... mediocre but... more>> its really good and just makes you realize things. <<less

It's been so long since I've fully immersed myself into a story, and this was it! The story is stunning to what I initially thought it would be - a simple story where a normal dude reads a book, finds out that the book becomes reality, and uses this information to survive. And while that is somewhat true, there is so much more -- mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat, beautifully written characters, and a very, very complicated and interesting story.

One of my favourite parts of... more>> the story was the variety of characters and the camaraderie. It's definitely more of a slow-burn (friendship wise), but that made it all the better. I loved seeing that the main character wasn't necessarily OP either. He has brains and could fight, but there were several other characters who shined as well (even more so in certain cases). The chemistry between some of the characters (the main three stood out most for me), was the best. Unquestionably, tons of characters to root for - with little dichotomies, should I add, something pretty apparent in web novels and manhwas that I utterly despise. The character developments are amazing, and this change was very noticeable at the end. And despite a few characters not having enough screentime, I laughed and cried with each of them.

More than anything, the story is built on such a unique premise: Reading, gods, constellations, stories, characters, and everything in between. I've personally never seen something like this before. I don't want to spoil anything, but it's so intricate and thoughtful, with so many "hints" hidden every so and then. I cried a few times, and it definitely had me thinking after finishing it.

That being said, there are flaws to it - the story becomes quite tedious to read towards the end, rushing a cycle of self-sacrificing and big fights over and over again (story is still interesting, just tired). There are certain parts that I think could've been cut and more every day/relaxing scenes added in. Some characters just deserved more screen-time as well (some downright disappeared for hundreds of chaps), but that was bound to happen with so many characters and timelines. It is worth it though, and the epilogue wraps up the story satisfyingly.

In any case, this is definitely one of my most pleasant reads so far! I mean, who reads 500 chapters for nothing? Recommended, you won't regret reading it! <<less

The plot got too repetitive for my taste and too tiresome to read. The most common situation involved some prediction of the future in which the MC is gonna die. This happens several times during the middle section of the novel. One death prediction after another. Early on, MC gains the ability to come back to life. The consequence of death never seems present. He dies, comes back to life, and dies again. These scenarios occupy so much time yet the end result is always the same.

People who have given this story low ratings have honestly not stuck around to say enough about it, in my opinion. There was a decent balance between relationship/character development and action scenes, and very few dull moments. I really didn't want it to end.

Characters:

I think every character was really well written, with each of them slowly maturing and growing from the things they've been through. Since we see them from the eyes of Kim Dokja, the MC, it's easy to say they exist to make him look better,... more>> but that's honestly not true. I think each one of them had their own traumas, their own motivations to do what they do, and no character is without flaw.

Kim Dokja: The cool-headed man who appears to know everything. That's how he's introduced, at least. Over the course of the novel, you see how he is selfless to the point of neglecting himself, how he can't comprehend that he matters to other people, how much he loves his companions, the sadness and loneliness he feels, and generally how human he is. I love his character.

Yoo Jonghyuk: a complete jerkwad at the beginning of the story, even this man grows. Experiencing pain where he loses the people closest to him time and time again, he acts closed off, but you realize how much he cares for Kim Dokja, and even the other companions, to an extent.

Han Sooyoung: someone who acts standoffish and mean on the outside, but would go to the ends of the earth for her friends. One of the most dynamic characters in this novel.

Plot:

I admit, the plot can be convoluted. However, I think the fact the authors were able to string together mythology from several countries, and literally every fantasy trope known to man into one book and make it work-- well, that's remarkable. Norse mythology, Korean history, Indian stories, dragons, gods- you've got everything. I think they did a great job meshing it all together. Not once did I not enjoy myself.

Relationships:

Tropes: found-family, enemies-to-friends, sacrificial-hero, several others.

Kim Dokja and Yoo Jonghyuk's friendship is incredibly nice. Honestly, the level of care they show to each other the whole story and refuse to acknowledge it is funny. I'll put my favorite moments under spoiler tag:

Spoiler
  • They have a literal story called "Life and Death Companions" connecting them.
  • Jonghyuk travels to another planet to bring Kim Dokja back.
  • Kim Dokja is meant to get killed by the person he loves most: it's shown that person is Yoo Jonghyuk.
  • I'm not 100% sure, but KDJ is the only person YJH verbally acknowledges as a "companion" in ORV. He has other companions, but he doesn't call it out, or single anyone out the way he does KDJ.
  • SPOILERS FOR CH. 188: "If he returned now then Kim Dokja might revive again. However... What if Yoo Jonghyuk went back and there was no Kim Dokja? Or what if Kim Dokja didn’t act like this again? Yoo Jonghyuk was afraid of something for the first time."
[collapse]

If I had to list every moment, we'd be here forever.

I also love Han Sooyoung and Dokja's friendship. This woman has done the utmost for him, despite always saying she finds him annoying. She's brave, witty, and helps him out whenever he needs it. Pretty sure she was also the first person in his company that he cried in front of. They go from enemies to having each other's backs in thick and thin.

Dokja is also really good to the kids, and they adore him. His friendship with just about anybody is a wonderful thing to examine.

Overall, this story left me an emotional wreck, especially the ending. I wish I hadn't been spoiled as a first time reader, but unfortunately I was. Trust me, please avoid spoilers for this one. Every moment is worth it. I love this story more than any other action story/manhwa I've read. <<less

Okay this is getting my blood boiled. The most prevalent theme for the criticism towards this novel is about "Self-insert" which is ridiculous for a criticism. You could practically put self-insert towards a lot of fantasy based shounen series. Sure it's idealistic but a lot of other series is. And besides if you want more realistic based plot stories then why pick fantasy? Why did you not read the plot? You know it's going to be unrealistic.

This novel has it all: an interesting premise, groundbreaking world building, dynamic characters, found family, etc. To all the other reviewers giving it low scores before finishing, try revising once you unlocked the final story. There's a reason for everything, and the paradoxes and explantation enriches the story to it's fullest. This whole story is essentially a love letter to authors and the readers who support them, to a novel's character that could inspire readers and their creators to live, and their beautiful relationship founded upon devotion for one another.

This novel writes characters and lets them grow. You'll find that even if you can't love a character, you'll still end up understanding or sympathizing with them in the least.

ORV is great, it's beautiful and magnificent and it always leaves a heavy feeling in my chest. I've reread this thrice already and with each reread, I learn something new and fall in love all over again. ORV is truly a meta novel, giving the readers various insights all while being an enjoyable read. <<less

Aaaaahhh my f*cking feels. Kim Dokja you bit*h you made me cry so hard. {Me sobbing at ending}

(rant over review now)

So this story can be summed up in a single word - Paradox. I must say that I enjoyed reading this a lot. Especially the final chapters and epilogue made me cry ugly tears.

The only issues with the novel is the lack of development of the side characters. Honestly the only people who are actively involved in the plot are YJH and HS. The other characters are mostly... more>> forgotten. That is unsatisfying since they all have such potential and awesome backstory too but well it is what it is. With a cast this huge there's little you can do to give everyone a spotlight.

Personally I really enjoyed this novel as we see the story unfold and the unexpected suprises make me so so curious that you can't help but want to read till the end as a reader (Dokja) and see our own characters attain the epilogue they chased for so long.

Overall 4/5 stars. Read it. It's great <<less

I'm no where near the finish of this novel but I'm already tempted to drop it because it's feeling so repetitive and all the side characters feel like the same person. They would all do the same thing because of some tragic reason and it's really predictable. it's not groundbreaking or anything.. Especially if you have been reading lots of novel of the same genre before.

MC positioning as the reader of the story might be new, probably, but the execution, the progression aren't that different from your usual 'future knowledge' themed novel.

It becomes a chore to read after 200 ish chapters.

too many 'too cryptic' sentences that doesn't make sense just so that the MC appears to be mysterious and all knowing, and poof, something happens 'but he already expects it or something happens and he didn't expect... more>> it but already have plans in hand because it might happen', there was no hints beforehand and the author just need to attach this pretty much sentence in MC monologue "This is similar with round XX story, so I already prepared this item from round XXX, and this strats from round XXY, and even if it fails I could probably enact plant from round XYZ, I am a ReAdER after all." or something something.

I personally like the character styles and story, though I am not sure if there was anything on the MC, if anything he already changed from your usual MC into some psycho reader personality on the opening chapter, and stays like that.

--Ch. 358

Updated after reading the whole thing:

Later parts of the novel (400+) ch started to regain its charm, but still a chore to read due to over usage of repeating inner thoughts on every single chapters. It literally is just repetition of MC's self-lamentation, escapism, and dejection presented with different sentences.

The epilogue proven to be more entertaining because
Spoiler

you don't have to hear MC shitty repeating monologue, because dude is basically gone, lol, yeah, maybe until the epilogue end, the implied return.

I'd give 4/5 after the end, seems that I can't change the star.

If going by author's word, this entire sh*t was sweet potato novel, there's barely any cider moments. <<less

Started off good but became kind of mediocre. (The first 200 chapters is the best part of the story.)

Here were My main problems:

  • The MC straight up went from a calculating person who tried to use everything to survive to a normal beta nice-guy. I felt weird because I really did enjoy the MC in the begining. There was also the fact that NONE of the MC's plans ever failed? Because realistically in a world like this you there is always a huge change of you losing everything and your plan failing. But it never felt like that here. The MC and his group basically breezed though everything until the end.
  • The forced drama of "The original protagonist hates the protagonist and tries to kill him but actually loves him" and Yoo Jounghuk (The Orginial Novel Protagonist) in general. Yoo Jounghuk is like that edgy teenager in school that you would be friends with because you felt sorry for him.
  • There are a lot of abnormally forced cliffhangers, where the author leaves out information when it would be naturally revealed. At least create an excuse for the cliffhanger instead of yanking descriptions out from where they should be.
  • The epilouge. Here is where I go into spoliers:
    Spoiler

Basically, at the end if the novel, The main character sacrifices himself for his team mates. I was legitimately surprised at this twist as not a lot of authors are willing to kill-off their main character. The problem I had is that in the epilouge the authors basically made a way to bring him back and that is what the characters are going to do. This personally felt like a slap in the face. Because why kill off your characters if you are going to bring them back? I really liked the ending and the epilogue was straight up the authors retconning the ending which I personally really hated.

    [collapse]
The reason I'm rating this three stars is because I don't believe that this novel deserves a 4.4. It deserves more of a 3.7 in my opinion. This has reread value though, I would rather read this than one of those terrible Chinese novels.

So Basically:

1-200 were definitely the best parts of the novel (at least in my opinion).

201-300 was when I could see a little quality drop but it wasn't that bad.

301-400 were a chore to read, but it was alright, I guess. At this part the novel felt like a slog and the banter isn't all that fun. It was basically Yoo Jounghuk wanting to kill the MC and loving him. Rinse and Repeat.

401-516 was when the novel got interesting enough for me to not drop it, but it wasn't as good as 1-300. The last 10 or so chapters were really good though, the authors really did something unexpected which I found pretty impressive. As not a lot of authors would be willing to do the same thing.

517-551 these were the epilogue chapters, and this was the part of the novel I really hated. It legitimately felt like a slap to the face. It was basically the authors backtracking the ending/basically them reversing the decision that they made at the end of the main story. It really rubbed me the wrong way since I personally really loved the ending to the main story.

There is not a lot translated so far, but this novel looks promising. The plot hook is both cliche and somewhat new at the same time. The usual part about knowledge about the future is improved with the way it is implemented - a novel that the MC has been reading for 10 years and which ended the day before apocalypse. So, he's not a regressor in the strict sense. Protagonist's skills are on par with other people in the beginning. Plus, the knowledge is somewhat limited by source material,... more>> i.e. If a character saves somebody that died in novel he is not able to get new information about them.

The writing is good and translation is nice, so maybe try it and see for yourself. <<less

The plot is extremely well written that I personally called this novel a masterpiece. It’s light, it’s dark, it’s funny but it could also make me cry. Simply amazing.

Ps. If you are put off by the bad reviews, just remember, this novel is so popular its getting an manhwa, anime, and live-action adaptations.
