Kim Dokja does not consider himself the protagonist of his own life. Befitting the name his parents gave him, he is a solitary person whose sole hobby is reading web novels. For over a decade, he has lived vicariously through Yu Junghyeok, the main character of the web novel Three Ways to Survive the Apocalypse (TWSA).

Through Junghyeok, Dokja has experienced secondhand the trials of repeatedly regressing in time, in search of an end to life-threatening “scenarios” that force people to act out narratives for the amusement of god-like “Constellations.”

After reading 3,149 chapters—long after all other readers lost interest—Dokja finally resigns himself to the story ending. However, he receives an enigmatic message from the author, stating that the story will soon be monetized, before his surroundings suddenly go dark.

He swiftly realizes that fiction has become reality and he is now living through TWSA. Although he is the singular omniscient reader of the events yet to come, his success in the scenarios is not guaranteed—but perhaps his advantage will empower him to step into the protagonist role that never suited him before.

almost one year overdue review because I finished it earlier this year

anyway! Well-deserved popularity. Its form of story-telling and the way it unravels the plot is one that is exactly my style. The author is extremely skillful in keeping your intrigue high, because once you start reading a chapter, it's really hard to put down. Wanting to know the answer to "what tf just happened" is enough of a drive to continue reading to the end. It's well worth it anyway because the seemingly convoluted plot and the mystery... more>> are all tied up to deliver an amazing story deserving of a high rating.

aside that, the characters and their relationships were wonderfully written. I see a lot of fiction tend to have a problem with this aspect, some of them not being able to write their exchanges properly, which in turn leads to the the readers not being able to fully connect with the characters. Orv is the opposite. I truly enjoyed the dialogues and their conversations with each other, all of them having a special spot in my heart in the end.

although, I think one of my biggest gripes with orv is the almost-repetitive self-sacrificing nature of the protagonist. I don't think the 'self-sacrificing' trope in general is bad, but when it happens every arc and in every major fight it just loses meaning because it only ends up seeming like some plot device to keep the flow and the story running. This part alone made me lose plenty of my interest when the story was almost arriving at its conclusion.

even so, the good outweighs the bad. All of these aspects combines to form a story that i'd definitely recommend to anyone regardless of whether they've read tons of novels or have never touched a book.

lastly, mdilhsy (man do I love han sooyoung) <<less

💬 "Epic in theory, copy + paste in execution."

Everyone made this sound like the second coming of literature, so I geared up for brilliance... and got a plot loop so repetitive it could be written by an AI stuck in safe mode.

From chapter one, it's:

... more>> MC: "Oh no! A problem! Should I use THAT?"

System: congrats, here's a shiny new skill to fix your exact issue.

MC: "Lucky me! Crisis averted. Level up! On to the next conveniently solved scenario!"

Repeat. Ad nauseam.

It's not tension, it's a glorified tutorial mode. I swear the MC's greatest skill is plot armour with DLC.

Honestly, I'm convinced the raving reviews were written by sugar-high 13-year-olds or someone whose last brain cell is on sabbatical.

Reading a novel where the MC is also reading a novel haha. Fascinating.

This is the first time I felt like 'this novel is gonna be interesting' even though is just started reading it and didn't know what I'm going into. And yes after finishing reading this story this novel has blown my mind away. This is a great novel.

It started out really great and got me hooked. It made me really interested in reading in and haven't had any boring part.

MC is likable having had suffered a lot he deserved... more>> getting a better luck this time around and the novel he is reading helped out a lot. And I thought that's it, it's going to be a predictable novel but no. I'm really amazed how great the author tells the story.

Really great novel I highly recommend it as a first read when you're just starting on reading Korean novels. <<less

This is not for the light of heart. This novel is freaking long. Took me 2 months to finished it. But I am not impressed with the ending. First half of the book is great! Page turner and every page keeps you wanting more. The world building and storytelling is epic. A unique storyline that keeps me wanting more. Although the plots are cliche, it is still good.

Until the part before the ending where it confuses me. I no longer know what is happening. Seems like the author throw some... more>> shits and dazzling to make it more sense, but it's just a fancy plot to make it sure it is still interesting.

What strikes me the most is that the main role of MC is to

Very good, very long novel. I completed the main story but unsure about the extras.

I recall binging the novel when I had a free waking moment. Even then I had to go back several times since I forgot the previous plot mostly due to not knowing any Korean history. The names had no meaning to me... so there was a gap in general knowledge that the author might’ve expected the reader to have. However, the novel was still worth sacrificing my hours of sleep. The author’s creativity shined.

Currently on chapter 177. So far this is of my top 3 best "I was reading a novel and I ended up experiencing it." type of trope. Every character was very interesting, I liked how Dokja wasn't a cliche, OP type of MC. The plot had everything. Angst, Comedy, Action, That one pinch of romance to fuel the readers. Every chapter has had me screaming into my pillow in excitement. I don't think there are any plot holes so far. Nice longish chapters, great writing and it also has nice... more>> official art too.

Some people might think this web novel is overrated, but I personally believe it is worth all the hype it gets. (Also coming from someone who doesn't usually like/get into the special ability type of trope.)

If someone were to ask me to recommend them a web novel like orv that's ACTUALLY as good. I wouldn't know what to say because there r very few novels that are on the same level as it. (I know ur thinking "but this plot/trope is actually pretty popular" but my point is, is that 90% of other novels with the same themes usually aren't as good as orv. <<less

Must say, probably one of the most well loved novels I've ever read! I started reading this about 4 years ago, when it was still being translated into English. I loved the premise, the characters, the plot, everything! To new readers, it's definitely very daunting. 1 million+ word count! But though it's very long, I would definitely reccomend it. The translation has easy grammar, though a little wonky. It's full of lore. Just like many Korean webnovels, it is filled with lots of repetitive lore, though it's all very important... more>> and useful through the storylines. Making great use of regression, alternate universes, deities, and most importantly, health. Many characters suffered through the apocolypse, and it gives great insight into many backstories, with people from varying backgrounds. Though I gave it 5 stars, there are some flaws. But all novels have flaws, and you have to learn to embrace them. On a funnier side note, how the hell did Yoo Mia survive??? Like, she was at school? When the apocolypse started, and her only skill is literally eating things. Did she like, step on a roach and live???? Lowkey, this is probably one of the biggest, if not most, prominent plotholes of ORV. But definitely, I loved the lore! Our MC, Kim Dokja, is an everyday worker who is slightly below average. Won't give backstory spoilers, but it is very investing to find out his character and lore!! He is very self sacrificing, so if you like tr*sh of the Count's Family, you will certainly love this! Also, if you look at some other reviews, you might notice people being like "OMG they is so gae", but there's no canon relationship between MC and Joonghyeok! So if you want gae stuff, preferably go to BL novels. However, there are plenty of good fanfiction! Many people say that the tropes used are overused or stolen from multiple novels. I disagree. As a matter of fact, from the many novels that have been allegedly "stolen" from, they started using multiple tropes taken from ORV once it started gaining popularity. On a different topic, there's a lot of girlboss female characters too! <<less

10/10 will cry again (add a tragedy tag please)

Made an account just to combat the low ratings. There's a very good reason why there's a huge difference in the ratings of new readers vs finished readers. A lot of loose ends/"plot holes" that you see earlier on get tied up neatly. And when you reread the series after the ending, it becomes obvious that it was foreshadowing being hidden by the appearance of a plot hole. This also is not a series that you should read casually without thinking... more>> too much about what it's trying to say.

A huge draw is the great character writing/development of not just the male main cast, but of the female main cast and side characters too. (BTW if you're looking for a harem series go somewhere else). The greatest part of this novel is the character writing, actually. Very character driven plot. You don't really realize how much you've come to care about the characters until around the ending, and then the epilogue runs you over like a speeding train.

The second best part is just the metanarrative of what it means to create, to consume, to be in a story. I'll be vague about it at risk of spoiling, but you can see the building blocks of this from the very first chapter.

In short: this isn't your typical male power fantasy knovel with a harem of shallow female characters that exist only to love the MC. This novel has a lot of genuine love and care put into it. It's a love letter to writing. <<less

This novel is a masterpiece.

The characters, the plot, both are truly amazing. The thing I like the most about the novel was the way they portrayed the female characters. Unlike most of the novels where female characters are damsel in distress or an object for sexualization, the female characters were awesome here. In some scenario they even overpowered the male characters.

As for the side characters, although I wanted to read more of their POV I'm glad that they were not just introduced to glorify the MC and actually had their... more>> own storyline.

Spoiler

when the identity of tls123, secretive plotter and oldest dream was revealed, I literally got goosebumps. And the reason behind it was actually so touching yet sad.

The ending was so bittersweet.

When all the companions were ready to go through that hell again for Kim dokja was so heartwarming.

Heh. This is my first time writing a review and itʼs making me excited because I love writing and typing. Yeah, alright, that sounds super random and actually is.

Anyway, the main point. Yes, a review.

Actually Iʼm just reviewing this because I felt way too excited to comment about my mixed feelings of this particular novel. Or online. Or whatever. Technically my opinion is that what others commented always has a slight true of it. Because peopleʼs opinions differ, as much as how cliche that sounds, hoho.

As said, I love typing... more>> and writing. So for those interested in my (super, long-ass) comment, come on and read~~

THE RAMBLES:

You can say Iʼm quite of a thinker. So this type of mysterious, engaging, kind of novel sort of suits me. Although I do like relaxed types too. I did leave this hanging because I was too lazy at that time (early chapters) to follow a long book. Actually, all the time. But I picked it back up.

I said I have mixed feelings because I mostly turned off my emotions in order to not get swept away in the story. If you get it, you get it.

Yeah, but I still like it.

Haih, for an overall, simple review, this novel just clicked with me. Surely everyone understands that, right? No? Welp.

Although sometimes Iʼm too tired to think and didnʼt catch up on certain things. I did have to re-read it again. That sucks because the chapters are long~~

Spoiler

Like the Disconnected Film Theory. To this day, I still have not completely comprehend how does that works. And trust me, I read a lot of nonsense in my life.

[collapse]

By the way, this novel plays a lot with time and world-lines. So, youʼd better understand what that is before you dive in. And please, donʼt bother predicting the outcomes. Youʼll just get a headache (like me, yep), just wait for the plot to unfold~~ Itʼs better that way, it really is. The story is so goddamn long and painfully confusing so youʼd better yeet yourself outta here if you donʼt like 200 chapters and up. I read this in Wattpad and thereʼs like three books so thatʼs about... 600 chapters. A book contains 200 chapters, youʼre welcome.

Some said repetitions were a lot. Like, a lot, lot.

Repeat that a little more and there you have it. The goddamn, scenarios. Read to 20 or more chapters to understand what or how does the scenarios work. *thumbs up*

Yeah it could be boring and such, but again. If itʼs your taste, itʼs yours, really. Not really, but really. If itʼs not then, welp. Sorry for wasting your precious time reading something that you dislike. Hate is such a strong word, donʼt you all think so?

For me, the characters feel alive enough for me to feel them. Ohho, that sounds weird now doesnʼt it? Hehehe.

Spoiler

Yeah, well weʼve got:

I. Kim Dokja. Yes, our self-sacrificing MC. One of the Holy Trinity of Sacrifice. Add Cale and Han Yoojin. There! Itʼs completed! There are some more but they are the famous ones, UwU. *wiggling practically gone eyebrows over here*

Yeah, so he knows of everything. Take that literally. And there is a (not-so) huge plot-twist at the end that most predictors already knew of... Okay, nevermind that.

Yeah, I actually like him. Like, a damn lot. He grew up honestly, if you ask me, lol. The scene that hurted my pride most was when he almost got killed off by our ML himself, dearest Yoo Jonghyuk. Letʼs not dive into every one of them, okay~~ Or this review will never end, I assure you.

II. Yoo Jonghyuk. Your average tsundere, cold, ruthless, killer protagonist. Lived 1865 world-lines using his infamous Stigma «Regression». Well, hello there sir. Ah, so youʼre a gift (tragedy) from a loved one, I see.

Will kill you off if he deems that youʼre a f*cking threat. Haha, quite literally.

III. Han Sooyoung. Our favorite author. Early in the book sheʼs a "copycat". We all know sheʼs not and if she is... then sheʼs literally copying off of herself. This is the character that we all love because sheʼs clever, the back-up plan, and overall saves everyoneʼs asses. We all should thank her. Thank you Han Sooyoung~~

We also have:

IV. Our cute and lovely Shin Yoosung.

V. Another (small) tsundere who loves his life-saver, Lee Gilyoung.

VI. Made of the finest steel only, Lee Hyunseong. Oh, he lost a lot of things.

VVI. Jeong Huiwon. The blade of the group. Or justice. Or whatever. Letʼs clap for her everyone...

Eighth, because I do not know of Roman numbers. Yoo Sangah. Hmm, perhaps the groupʼs morality? Sure, sure. Oh yeah, you could say she has the most potential being the heroine? Second place next to our tsundere protagonist, of course, hehehe. 💅🏻💅🏻💅🏻

Ninth, Lee Jihye! Ah, so sorry I almost forgot my third favorite character. I like her very much. Because she is a hidden card~~

The constellations. Uriel, Abyssal Black-Flame Dragon, Sun Wukong, Persephone, Hades, Dionysus, Surya, Metatron, Gabriel... Woah, didn't think Iʼd remember quite a lot.

Thereʼs also Jang Hayoung, Kyrgios, Is that how you spell his name? Breaking the Sky Sword Saint, Anna Croft.

[collapse]

Ah, too long. How did I survive... Iʼm just rambling about this novel now. *cries*

Okay, stop. The biggest reason as to why I love it was because it made me ponder certain things about life. Yeah, my all-time favorite books always has this trope, trust me. So, goodbye I guess. I just rambled, literally. Bruh. Swear Iʼm never writing a review again.

I lied. Okay, for real now, goodbye.

-A certain human

[By the way, I added this section later on because—well. Itʼs me.

Anyway, since the story is so goddamn long you began to wonder why you existed, when you finally finished it I guess it gave some sort of satisfaction to me.

Like, itʼs almost like Iʼm in there myself. Donʼt sue me, please, bear with me.

I think that was the only good thing about it having so many chapters. Youʼll feel like, "Ah, it finally ended. I followed them for so long, I canʼt believe it actually ended."

Because every time climaxes happen I always go like, "I wonder how this will end. They suffered so much—blablabla."

And the torture continues again.

Sometimes I wonder have I mingled with it too long it began affecting my mind. It probably did. Now every time I thought of ending Iʼll always be reminded of this. I didnʼt lie this time. What, you thought I canʼt be serious for once? I can, lol. Itʼs just too boring, haha.

Since the plot was so detailed and I actually almost got swept away with it every single time, I guess the author nailed in making it so adventuresque. Since you followed it from the "beginning", it feels like watching a whole goddamn movie. And the MC finally got what he wanted all along. Man, writing this new section made me emotional somehow.

All right, Iʼll see what more can I add to this later on, toodloo.] <<less

Ok, I know this is a popular novel so I don't want to complain to much. I read maybe 20 chapters but dropping it for know. I admit that for a Korean novel, It's well written with lengthy paragraphs, good depictions and the premise of a much wider plot and world building.

But there is just too much interruption in the events by the aliens for my taste. Like every couple of paragraphs and it prevent a smooth story flow.

And there is the main character, a blow ordinary guy with the... more>> only thing he has going for is that he has read the scenario of events before. But somehow when the scenario begins, he is depicted as a smart, scheming, cunning and daring person with knowledge and plan about everything.

I think this story is more suitable for a manga instead of text reading. <<less

I just loved it so much

Summary:

If you like action/science fiction/fantasy novels with hardworking MC, many funny and interesting characters (and their dynamics), plot twists, FEELS, a good amount of crying and angst (so-so), this novel is for you.

... more>> It is very broad, in the sense that the reader gets transported inside and can feel the mood of each chapter. But there are instances where the action o scenery is not enough detailed.

Certainly, there were too many translators changes, and following the thread was sometimes complicated, because there are many concepts and names.

I recommend it a lot, I loved it so so so much, that I am glad I stuck to the end of it, and I want to read it again and again. <<less

I’m trying to continue reading it so we’ll see how it goes but ya only 4... more>> star because the new translator is horrid. Also important note;

There is a beginning in every ending. Everything is connected to each other. This novel pretty much sums that up.

You can see there is a difference in reviews with people who got off the novel early, and people who stuck to the end. It's ironic how this happens in the novel too. Some people will love it, and some wont.

Kim Dokja is the very epitome of every reader (read until the end and you'll know why). You will love his character development. Not only him but also the main character... more>> Yoo Jonghyuk, idc care how anyone else describe it, Dokja and Joohyuks bromance whatever you call it transcends, time, space and dimensions LOL. All the other characters have developments too! There is never a dull moment in this novel and the authors will make your brain fried and watery from the things that happens in the novel.

I am glad to be counted as one of the "readers" who have read this story so it can continue on :) If you're just in the early chapters, dont stop. It will get interesting. If you are deciding whether to read this novel or not, I suggest start it and you're in for a roller coaster ride. <<less

I started off reading the manhwa and I enjoyed the concept not realising what I got into. I'm the type that loses track of everything else when I read a book I really like and this was one of them, this easily jumped to number one on the list of books I've read.

Why would I rank it no 1? I ranked it based on the void it left on me after I finished and I started watching edits on the characters for a week or so...

Sure it has it's flaws... more>> but with how much I enjoyed it, I didn't even notice it until I read peoples criticisms on it.

I really enjoyed how the epilogue was handled, I could see myself in the characters not wanting to let go of the story even though I knew it was coming to an end.

The story has an open ending and a lot of people have mixed feelings on it, yet for me I felt the same until I went back to read the final chapter after I got over the empty feeling I had. I noticed the final few paragraphs and especially the last sentence on the story made me realise that Kim Dokja possibly did have his own happy ending. <<less
