Jiang Zhen crossed into ancient times and became the old bachelor eldest Jiang who was neglected by his whole family in Hexi Village.

He was born into a good family, but the eldest Jiang was busy all year and couldn’t even eat a full meal. His two younger brothers could marry a wife, but he was starved to death… Jiang Zhen felt it was unbearable.

You don’t want to feed me? OK, I will kill the chicken myself.

You don’t even give me a glimpse of food? It doesn’t matter, the door of the granary will be opened as soon as I kick it.

You want to tell me that I am unfilial? Ok, I will immediately take the knife to the village and slash people, and let the yamen officer catch all of us.

Jiang Zhen became a local tyrant in the village. He also saw the “ugly” ger who could not get married in the village.

Future father-in-law: “Jiang Zhen is always wandering around our house. Is he planning to rob our house?”

The future mother-in-law: “What to do? Jinge can’t beat him!”

Zhao Jinge’s face was hot… Dad, the wild rabbit that I brought back today is what he gave…

totally worth it. Usually I tire easily when machine-translating novels but I ended up finishing it before I knew it.

The novel is Fast paced, maybe a bit rushed before the ending as it would have been nice to see a bit more details as it was near the beginning. The world building is complete and immersive, the characters are many and well thought of, the ending doesn't leave openings and it answers all the possible endings beautifully. You can read with a peace of mind.

The MC is a logical person... more>> and his character consistent, my favorite character is the male lead, the manly ger that people used to look down on and fights for his and his husband happiness <<less

Oh I loved this story, I really did. Then the scenes with shen Anxin and I dropped it.

Spoiler

First sentence that said he had been r*ped and I dropped it immediately. Especially cause the author literally rubs it into his face, like what? What do you mean someone says to him "I'll walk you home cause it's easy to get r*ped here" then next sentence tell us he's already been r*ped? Like what a d*ck move to rub it in his face like that! I thought that would be foreshadowing but nope, dudes already been r*ped. I hoped he would get better but unfortunately the reviews say otherwise.

[collapse]

TLDR:

Shen Anxin is the type of character that someone in a QT novel would take over. You know, the one where the MC needs to help them cause the author f*cked em over for no reason? Reading QT books I always thought it unrealistic that someone would actually write a character like that, but nope, this book proved me wrong!

(Mind you I read this book years ago and it still pisses me off to this day) <<less

Didn't know I'd write my second review so soon after my first, but I need to get this off my chest. I'm giving this 2 stars, would've been 1 for how I felt when I dropped it but I raised it since the beginning isn't half-bad.

General Thoughts:

I was having fun... until I wasn't. It starts off appealing—slice of life romance in a small town with little stakes. Even as the setting scaled up to include richer families and bigger profits, I didn't mind it at all since it... more>> was done decently. Though our MC (the gong) had it pretty easy with how he just beat everyone up when there were problems, the simple and quick face-slapping set this novel up to be a light, fluffy read.

Unfortunately, it took everything it was good at (completely subverting tropes by using their opposite, i.e. the ML being a manly ger, the MC being more interested in manly appearances, and the setting being a poor provincial town) and threw it out the window. I dropped this when I did because I was under the impression I could finish it—only 20 more chapters, surely I'm close to the end? Until I realized there's 70 more chapters, at which point I deemed it too annoying to continue. This is one of the first novels I've ever dropped and it's such a shame since I was so invested in the light-hearted, low risk operations of the first half.

Technical Aspects:

Plot - 2/5 The MC achieves his goals too easily, the logistics can barely be called that, and the operation and business lost me when we got to the nonsensical development of my favorite character in the novel (which I will elaborate on later).

The scope starts small and simple, going from beating up his family, to people in the village, to a government official, to people from other villages. Yes, in that order. Honestly, the main reason I dropped this was not because the plot was too cliche, ironically countering the appeal of the novel in the first place, but because my displeasure in witnessing characters and romance far exceeded any curiosity for the upcoming (supposedly racist) arc. I much prefer character interactions, especially those of the leads, so I usually stick around despite a bad plot.

Characters - 1.5/5 Speaking of which, I am extremely disappointed in how shallow the leads and their romance is. As the MC is courting the ML, I kept hoping for better development, but no. Last I checked, the ML only agreed to marry the MC because he thought he had no other option and the MC "treated him well." While that is true, they are sweet together, that's basically it. No gradual build up of feelings, just a jump cut straight to the altar.

Even after they get married and the "domestic fluff arc" begins, it reads to be superficial and bland with how little reciprocation is described. Yes, the MC says he loves ML. But the ML doesn't even understand what he says, presumably due to differing linguistic concepts. Plus, MC only starts courting ML because, oh, he's (ML) my (MC's) type, so I better snatch him up before someone else gets to him! It starts like that, it stays like that. Their emotions lie puddle-deep.

And ML, he has an inferiority complex when it comes to MC's capabilities and it's frankly patronizing how the author seems to knock him down constantly. The ML is this "manly" looking shou but he still acts as pathetic as more feminine shous in other such novels. Despite the MC's wholehearted affection, he still gets worried that he'll be cheated on with someone "more beautiful." Come onnnn, I want possessiveness but isn't it clear how much MC likes you? He tries to be helpful, but the author seems misogynistic in that MC keeps treating him "like a man" because he's only useful in physical strength and women can't be? I appreciate the attempt at diversity and subversion of obviously sexist tropes (such as the bottom being feminine all the time and being put on a pedestal for having a face or skin or body "like a woman" because it's appealing to men), but this was done incredibly poorly. It was a superficial attempt at innovation, at best. You'd think, 110 chapters in, that the ML or MC would have some romantic or individual development—nope.

The other characters are so singleminded and one-dimensional, they're not even worth mentioning. Either they praise and follow MC blindly or they hate and fail to oppose MC.

Next, about one of my favorite characters in the novel (Spoilers) :

Spoiler

Shen Anxin—I am so incredibly upset at how his character was treated. He is initially introduced as a mentally strong, physically delicate ger (opposite of ML) who simultaneously opposes and complies to the social standards. He runs a business despite being looked down upon by his competitors but, as he was secretly raised by his mother, he still wishes for a husband to treat him well. 'That's cool, ' I think, 'I wanna see more of that.' He sees how MC treats ML and envies that. 'Understandable.' Then Shen Anxin starts to plot revenge? He even tries to confess to MC because "he's better in every way compared to ML." 'Wtf.' Of course, MC rejected him, but in a really harsh way that I think was unwarranted (though I like his show of loyalty).

His (Shen Anxin's) character becomes increasingly shallow and irritating for no reason at all. It's infuriating. If his personality was set up to be this kind of green tea bit*h who wants to get in the way of married men, I'd forgive and maybe even enjoy him getting face-slapped and rejected so hard. But the r*pe, which is entirely unnecessary and I am still upset about that (¬、¬), and his sudden complete switch in attitude rubs me as the author wanting a "more serious" love rival for ML, maybe to set up some kind of character development. It's bullshit. I'm entirely uncomfortable with r*pe and/or s*xual assault and I abhor any piece of media that inserts it for the sake of a shitty plot point. Such as making a perfectly good character a villain. For what?

The "foreshadowing" the author mentioned to justify said plot point was so amateurish. If things were set up differently, like having a character to contrast Shen Anxin's selfishness and naivety or even Shen Anxin himself being a bit more b*tchy at the start, though it wouldn't validate the whole r*pe plot point, it would at least give him some characterized incentive (that didn't come out of a nonsense unreciprocated romance subplot) to become a minor villain. Instead, because the author wanted to include the very tropes the novel seems to avoid and actively subvert, he turns into wasted potential I'm still upset for. I give this category 1 star for Shen Anxin and 0.5 for the vain effort.

[collapse]

Writing Style (which may have been lost in the TL process) - 3/5 The writing was pretty simple and not very deep. I'm not sure if it's because I'm s*upid or maybe the TLs missed some paragraphs while proofreading (SHOUT OUT TO THE TLS FOR TRANSLATING THIS THANK YOU FOR YOUR WORK!!), but some sentences were really hard to understand. Or maybe I was just sleep deprived. Anyway, if nothing else, the writing was subpar and there were almost no meaningful attempts at subtext. The humor consisted almost purely of face-slapping, which is fine, but also not my type. In this aspect, I can't rate it higher than 3, and it only gets that much due to the efforts of the TL group, which I really appreciate despite being a usually silent reader (〃▽〃)

TLDR; Begins as a cute slice of life, but it drags on to be a nonsense plot with a shallow romance and wasted side characters. Going into this novel, I had the hopes of a relatively short, cute, fluffy novel with children, some struggle, and face-slapping. In the initial half (for around 100 chapters) this novel took those expectations, cradled it like a baby, gave it some kisses and head pats, then chucked it off the roof of a 20 story building. It goes to ruins and very quickly at that. It wasn't that good to begin with, but I was sticking around 'cause I found it all cute. Nevermind.

If you're really interested, read the first 100 chapters and only that. Don't waste your time with the rest. I've heard it gets worse. <<less

Good story. Loved the main couple. Especially when Jiang Zhen told the whip lady

"if he cheated on you, why would you whip the girl? She's not strong enough to pounce on him anyway. It's clear who's fault it is, so whip him all you want instead" 😂😂😂 my favorite part of the novel

I loved that they all got a happy ending. I actually like Gong POV novels more than Shou POV ones. Only if they are done right, of course. This is one such novel and I'm here for it.... more>> The face slapping is very satisfying. Characters are very entertaining. Misunderstandings are cute, instead of being angsty.

Would read it again, if time permits.

10/10 recommended! 🙌 <<less

The writing style is fairly immature so far - I'm not that far into the story - but I just have to say. It's so refreshing to find a BL story where the 'bottom' actually looks like a man instead of being drastically feminized, especially when it's a 'Ger' story (same applies to ABO 'Omegas'). It's constantly annoying to me when stories emphasize how (stereotypically) feminine and 'beautiful' a male character is, and say that's why they're desirable. If a guy likes men... why would he like the ones that... more>> look like they're women? It takes away all the attractive attributes of a man, and only leaves a vestigial pen*s. It seems to be there for cosmetic purposes. <<less

I really, really liked this story (and still am, waiting for updates). The translation is fantastic and I really appreciate that the author realizes that it takes time for things to happen instead of insta-mogul.

I didn't really pick it up through the NU intro, but the MC is a former soldier who ends up starting a shipping protection agency... which was kind of awesome. He isn't all-knowing. At one point he even bemoans the fact that Baidu isn't available because he needs info re: pregnancy.

I also really, really like the... more>> fact that this is probably one of the more 'women are awesome' BL I've read in a long time. I love Madam Zhou sooooo much. The author doesn't really shy away from more 'real' things but also isn't in any way explicit about it (in one case, I had no idea what the author was eluding to until it came up later). One of the characters, who had been rescued from a pirate village, had previously worked in a brothel. She was able to gain the employment that she wanted to do and decided to start her own household with an adopted child. Me: you go girl!

Madam Liao... er, Wen, is also so completely awesome. I'm always sad that most people don't have the luxury of connections or money to get out of a bad situation, but her scenes were completely bad ass.

There was some surprise anti-Japanese sentiment because... I thought this was an earth adjacent/not really earth world. I mean... gers? I'm always perplexed by some of the cultural decisions in the A/O (ger) literature. Like... if a ger can't produce breast milk, etc... how did nature select them to continue existing? It's like betas who are 70% of the population and can't have children. Me: ?

/segue. This is great, I highly recommend it. <<less

It was good at first, but author was just throwing cannon fodder into the grinder without any restraint over and over, with characters never meeting any real challenge. Main character stopped being likable or relatable soon after ch.60, and became absolutely insufferable after ch110.

Things like this can be nice and fluffy, but this one is not - it is just a cheap power fantasy.

Its good, its like watching day time soap drama, with MC has steady golden finger, a good slice of life reading, and even for me who never like mpreg genre, somehow I still read this until minzhu is born.

About ML inferiority complex is also plausable, I mean dude come on, if you happen to date some popular people, won't you have those insecurity ??? Also in the later chapter isn't it one of the MC subordinate thinks that jinge is more good looking then the MC??

The MC and ML Look... more>> is nothing like those 2HA, MDZS, QJJ, SPL kind of thingy

Dropped this. I pushed myself to read so far cause it has a lot of 5 star reviews. But yeah, not my cup of tea.

Spoiler

First, the MC transmigrates into a a dull situation - mud houses, no plumbing, you know, sucks. And his wife has some serious self esteem issues, like he's always all about how to keep all these skanks off my man - to the point that he locks up some women and gers who were recently rescued from people who ens*aved and r*ped them in the backyard, away from his man. Because he's not just 'ugly' outside, but inside as well.

It supposedly gets worse as the MC becomes a tyrant, so I'm not sticking with it. Not fun world, boring protagonists.

This is the fourth novel I read by this author. I loved all four.

MC is such a vindictive person, and I L-O-V-E revengeful characters. The things he does to the Jiang family are great! If someone slaps him in the face he always hits back! I love him!

ML is so cute~ I get a little uncomfortable with his low self-esteem, but I totally understand why he is that way. He was very wronged because of his masculine appearance. He's handsome, but handsome as a man. However, ML is a Ger,... more>> so he "should" look like a woman.... and ML is taller and more masculine than many men. Because of that, he was always called ugly :' (

I really like his personality at the end of the novel. I love him too!

The romance between ML and MC is so sweet. The two love each other very much. It has a lot of love throughout the novel.

I was very moved by the final chapters

Spoiler

It shows the original Jiang ZhenWei reincarnating in the future. The original Jiang ZhenWei has psychological trauma due to the mistreatment caused by the Jiang family.

The final chapters show how his new life was. He was very loved by his parents, relatives and wife!

I read it crying. I spent the whole novel feeling very sorry for him! Finally, he can be happy and loved.

The original Jiang ZhenWei is a character who has suffered a lot. He deserves all the love in the world.

[collapse]

The last arc is a little rushed. All the things happened very fast. But one thing I liked was:

Spoiler

How the MC fights for the rights of women and Gers. He always thinks about building a place where his daughter and ML can live without being intimidated and underestimated.

This is one of my favorite stories in the danmei category. The gong being the MC is like a breath of fresh air. His adventures and struggles in a little different ancient time makes it very enjoyable. I like that he is a decisive and a straightforward person, especially when he was romancing the shou in the first few chapters.

There's only a few of this good gong-is-the-MC novel these days I suggest to give this a try.

The ending will make you feel very satisfied.

MTL'd. It was a good story. The conflicts sort of frustrating because as the reader POV you'd feel that there are more ways to solve the problems but they just don't go the way you want because the characters are, characters, they are confined in the story and have hindsight. And I think it's one of the beauty of this novel. MC is not OP just because he's an 'outsider' of the world.

MC is the gong in this novel and for all his brilliant, he's truly an ordinary man, beside... more>> the fact that he used to be a special force soldier. And therefore somewhat violent. The situation he found himself made him grow to his full potential IMO, and his growth influence the people around him, including ML, his wife.

I love the fact that while Zhao Jinge (ML) is so full of insecurity but he's possessive of Jiang Zhen. And instead of doubting himself and MC, he just goes straight to want to better himself. It saves a lot of unnecessary drama.

All in all, I enjoyed reading this novel very much. <<less

Since there's no summary yet, I was planning to write one after I finished the first chapter, but so far it's just briefly introduced the MC and some setting. All I know so far is that our MC transmigrated into the body of the unlucky/hated eldest son of a wealthy family who starved to death.

The translation quality is good.

At first I let it go as the MC made misogynistic or sexist comments regarding the ger but it is escalating to a level that I no longer support.

The MC says that he likes his ger because it is not "feminine" because according to him a man should not be like that, and I understand that everyone has their inclinations but that does not take away the fact that he throws derogatory comments even at his own partner who in fact manipulates and uses to his liking.

I mean, her husband... more>> has low self-esteem and he doesn't do anything to help him feel good about himself but also takes advantage of that and molds him to his liking, I mean, the ger wants to be pretty, dress like others or imitate a bit of what the other gers do, but since the MC doesn't like that kind of thing, he chooses how he should look and dress because those are your tastes :/ <<less

5/5* - RECOMMEND!

This was such great story!!

MC (seme!) is a special force military guy that transmigrates into body of a poor, tragically ab*sed farmer in historic setting in which there are also gers. ML is a very manly (therefore considered ugly) ger whose family is very poor.

This story is absolutely great! There is no special or magical space abilities nor cultivation kind of interference. LOVED how MC truly had to work super hard to become succesfull. MC is physically very strong and has all the competences and abilities of a... more>> modern special force military. Also, he knows what kind of inventions are possible in the future, but he never knew the real technology. He only knew the direction and vision in his mind. This is something that I liked the most. No cheat system, but actual perseverance and hard work. There were setbacks too, but then MC just changed his plan. So more satisfying!!!

In the end
Spoiler

MC had to flee with his family to a neighboring country where they become the rulers. ML finally had all the freedom to make big changes to society.

[collapse]

Their lives were such a journey!! It took me 3 days to finish the story, slower than usual, because I actually read every sentence. The slice of life was very well paced, not boring at all. In the last quarter of the story I even felt the pacing became too fast.

ML was a wonderful, kind character who becomes very capable as well. Their relationship was truly beautiful because also felt very real and down to earth.

Super addicting farming story with wonderful characters and side characters. The journey was amazing. Love this author a lot. She has written great other stories. One of her specialty is to give her stories all full closure.

In the Extras the original owner who died too tragically had his wonderful story too. The final Extras regarding main cp was so heart warming too. <<less

except he separated from Jiang family and finally go outside the village to do some smol business, then returned to propose to Zhao Jinge. Former 2 can be done in the first few chaps but author decided it is wise to drag it to chap40-ish.

I won't comment much about MC rouge-ish personality cuz what do you expect from a former soldier? Casanova skill? Ew no. I like how straightforward he was tbh.

ML? I would like this story more if he has more spine.

Spoiler

He had the gut to carve out his cinnabar mole tho, prolly that gut used up a lifetime of his courage that he lose his spine

[collapse]

Moreover this story plot in the beginning was, almost similar to My Favourite Manly Husband or is it just me thinks so? Even the name, I thought it was the same novel until I saw the synopsis. So I can't help but make comparisons.

Well anyways imma drop it. It was good to some people but I wouldn't recommend this to those who likes power couple and fast paced story. <<less
